For several years, I drove from California to Montana along the Columbia river. The summer and the winter and the spring in the fall, the changing scenery just warms the heart. I remember going to one of the waterfalls and looking up as a train passed by underneath a bridge. Such an experience.
A beautiful video and area for train watching. My parents used to live in Washougal, WA, which is at the western entrance to the Columbia River Gorge. I remember hearing the train horns of the BN (pre merger) echo through the night. Awesome! Thanks for the video.
Railfan Dan, if there was such a thing as the DMA's, I would certainly nominate you for the Drone Master Award!🏆 The Cascade Locks with its lush forested mountains is my favorite part of the Columbia River. If only I had an RV! I am so glad that the damage from the rampant fires from a few years ago doesn't show. BTW: A 6 day cruise on the American Jazz starts around $6k! An outboard would be more along my budget. 😂 I ❤the PNW and its overcast skies!☁️🌧☁️ 👉Thanks for sharing these beautiful blessings, Dan!☝️😁
Well thanks Steve you're too kind! Yes luckily that big fire didn't affect this small section of the Gorge. I saw that price for American Jazz. Wow! Glad you are enjoying!
What a awesome freight trains 🚆 video 📹 this was, mega great captures of different types of freight and the scenery along with the great drone footage brilliant 👏 😀 👍 👌 great viewing 👏👍👍👌👌
Love this video. It's what I needed to see tonight after a rough day. It reminds me of an old PBS video series called Over America (later they named it "Over California", "Over Hawaii", "Over Alaska", etc) where they did similar video shots like these over beautiful, popular spots of our great nation.
Everyday I eagerly anticipate your next video. So today was a good day. Thank you. Your videos, are my absolute favorite. Can't get enough of them. Quick edit. The riverboats were awesome, love the variety.
Another homerun video, Dan! This really is a sweet location. I'd love to visit that area someday. And a plus for the boat footage too! I love watching towboats going through the lock at Keokuk, Iowa on the Mississippi River. There is a live stream camera there. A neat fact about that sternwheeler in this video, is that it is a legitimate sternwheeler. That big paddlewheel on the rear is actually powering that boat, which is rare today. Most sternwheelers you will see have a propeller underneath and the sternwheel is just a nostalgic fake. You can see that this one is really churning the water and moving that boat very well. Nicely done, buddy! 🤠👍
That's Scotty! Oh very cool. Wow neat I didn't know many sternwheelers today weren't actually powered by the paddles so that is super neat that this one is a true sternwheeler. Glad you enjoyed my friend!
Another nice one Dan. Hard to go wrong with a busy river and two railroads. I did miss the trackside shots. Always nice to have some up close and personal action as well as aerial.
Nice pleasant enjoyable presentation. Your filming of The Bridge of the Gods was a memory shaker for me though of the unfortunate recent Baltimore Francis Scott Bridge collapse when the Dali hit the supporting abutment and dropped the entire structure in the harbor. Very similar design style. The river cruiser was a bonus, all U needed was a plane flying by in the shot and you had the 4 types of basic transportation in that view!! As always, another enjoyable Railfan Dan quality work!! Thanks.
What makes your video's so outstanding is the care with which you produce them. I love the little bits of info you give us on special features in your video's and I much enjoyed seeing the boats. It's a nice little bit of diversity. Your speaking voice is also very easy to listen too and your very articulate. The trains and scenery are the best ever. No one else does anything like this that I've seen. Hope I'm not making your head swell, LOL. But I speak the truth.
I'll never get enough of the Gorge. That place has some of the best everything in it! The trains, the boats, the spectacular views, and the scenic Highway 14. What a perfect place to film; honestly I wish you would film there more often if possible! The entire time you would pan out, I would focus my attention on the other side of the river in hopes to see a train passing there too, but I guess the timing wasn't best sadly. Either way, sick video! Keep it up!!!
Thanks Mike! I do think it's pretty great but (maybe this is weird) it's so overdone by so many railfans that it gives me not quite as much desire to visit because of that. MRL was the same for me when I visited. I had just seen so much from so many on the MRL that I didn't have such a desire to visit but I had to go once it was announced that their lease was ending. I had hoped to get two trains at once in this video but no dice!
Hope to catch up with you one day. I am moving back to Oregon this week. Us railfans need to share stories one day. Yes it feels great coming home after 21 years of bring away.
Your May 2024 weekend at Cascade Locks, Oregon proved to be a splendid railfan weekend, Dan! I enjoyed watching the trains on the Union Pacific tracks and the BSF tracks. The boats on the Columbia River were a bonus. (Posted on 12 October 2024 at 1532 CDT.)
This is an amazing location with a typical small town, a mighty river and a neat bridge. The cruise ship was a lucky catch. I'm sure the passengers loves every minute of the journey, because the scenery is beautiful everywhere. The action on both sides is great. Lots of variety in locomotives and rolling stock. The weather was perfect and you footage came out very nice Dan. Another high quality update, thanks for the Saturday afternoon entertainment.
I really enjoy your PNW videos. As you may remember I'm from Washington. I often visit Multnomah Falls where the rail tracks cross over the foot path. Quite exciting when a train passes over.
What Dan has failed to mention is the Docks that are next to the river ..Those are Native American Fishing Platforms. Up by John day dam on the Washington Side is my family's fishing platforms. (Yakama) Another AMAZING ride Dan !!
Once again you made my Saturday. Your variety of drone angles is impressive. I’m thinking your shots of the BNSF trains were actually being flown from the Oregon side? Catching the cruise ship and stern wheeler was fun. Good job on “CPKC”-lol.
Hey, you're not SHIPFAN DAN, you're RAILFAN DAN! Listen, my wife and I stayed at that hotel on our wedding night. As well as our 1-year anniversary. They give you earplugs there! Just in case.
@@michaelberger8137 Yes we did! Not bad at all for free breakfast. We like to try and stay there for vacation at least once a year. I didn't say in the video but I was actually flying the drone from the balcony for everything in this.
@@TheRailfanDan Okay, the relatively basic controller. There's another one that costs around a thousand dollars with a brighter screen and about twice the control range. I've been contemplating one but so far I have had excellent results with RC1 or whatever it is called. Beyond about 300 meters I cannot see the drone anyway (strobe lights attached increase the range of visibility and oriented strobe lights help determine orientation of the drone at a distance).
@@thomasmaughan4798 Oh yeah I don't think that controller is worth the money. The biggest benefit of that is the HDMI port so you can connect to an external display while flying which could be beneficial for commercial use or film sets.
@@TheRailfanDan I very nearly bought one of these for that exact reason the HDMI port. I was going to set it up so Boy Scouts could watch a large screen TV while I flew the drone over the activities. With my Phantom drone I used little parabolic reflectors on the antennas and they doubled the range and also shielded the antennas from nearby off-axis interference. However, the performance of the RC1 controller and Mavic 3 is superior in every way to the Phantom and the cameras dramatically superior. I could certainly use the brighter screen at times.
I live near this area and love it. Wonderful music and videos. The computer voice narration really takes away from the entire production, though. Very irritating to listen to.
This train adventure is mighty adorable. Thank you for sharing

Oh yes! I think the Spring and the Fall are the best times to visit. My opinion.

The video seems pretty dark. But nice vid anywsy.
Everything was so dark, though.

Where do you get the music for your videos?
A website called Artlist.io
On these shots of the boats indecently is interesting, do you get any kind of feed back by showing these shots?
Feedback how? Here in the comments? I've only heard positive about the addition of the boats so far.
What controller do you use?
The RC controller with the built in screen for both the Mavic 3 and Air 3.
