About the Itako Gion Festival The Itako Gion Festival is the annual festival of Soga Kumano Shrine, located on Mount Tenno, and is a festival with over 800 years of history and tradition.
It takes place over three days from the first Friday to the Sunday of August every year, starting with the "Mihama-kudari" procession of two portable shrines (commonly known as Tenno-sama and Gongen-sama) on the first day. The middle day is the town parade, and the final day is the return ceremony.
The highlight of this festival is the lion dance in the third block, as well as the 14 or so floats and the Itako Bayashi music performed by the troupe of geisha on the floats. Three of the floats are designated as prefectural cultural properties, and the lion dance and Itako Bayashi music are designated as prefectural intangible cultural properties. The highlight is the "Kyubiki" (curved pull), represented by the "Nonoji mawashi" (nonoji roundabout) and "Sorobiki" (abacus pull), and the sight of the young dancers, floats, and troupe working together as one is a must-see.
Additionally, along the Maekawa River that runs through the city, numerous large flags are erected, creating a unique scene that is not found at festivals in urban areas.
