    Love your vids. I’m currently getting myself ready for my first shift (a 4:30 am start) as a bus driver after finishing driving school. Just watching to get an idea of what today may bring hahaha

    As a busdriver myself I feel your pain. Today I started at 5'o clock in the morning and finished short after midnoon. But it also has adventages like most of the time I can avoid traffic jams. I also do nightshifts and the following is quite rare but it happens sometimes. I am coming home around 6'o clock in the morning and go to sleep. When I wake up I have a day off but the next day I have to start at 6'o clock in the morning. Those are some hard times.

    Shaun, come on. -2C isn't cold. In t'good old days lad, shifts started about 4-30am, you had to hope the RSF (running shift fitter) had got the battery trolley ready to jump you if he hadn't had the early buses running all night to keep them warm and then you had to get to the outer terminal to run back in at 5-15 for the 6am shift workers. And cab heaters? What were those? Lol. Interesting. You have got it so easy.

    • @TheFlatCapBusDriver
      @TheFlatCapBusDriver  5 років тому +1

      Been there done that pal, 3am starts as duty supervisor working at -6/7 at stagecoach and nothing wanting to start haha, some runs we had to run so they put the bus in the heated garage so it would definitely start and run hahah! Cab heaters!! We don’t get them hahah, we get a pipe from the demister! Sometimes it’s decent! Sometimes not so great!
      We do have it s lot easier now compared to the old days but that’s just how technology and equipment has become 🚦🚌👌🏻

    Sorry if it’s a stupid question. If a bus has lost all its air, how do the doors open and close if you needed to? Is it just using your strength to force them? I know obviously it needs air built up to move off but if there was no air in when you first came to the vehicle and the doors are shut.

    • @TheFlatCapBusDriver
      @TheFlatCapBusDriver  5 років тому

      They just push open, they can be a pain to first ‘pop’ but soon as they do then they are just ‘loose’ to open and shut until the air is built back up

    hey.. Im a bus driver in Norwich and like you i can't stand the early shifts and rather work the lates which i have done for 10 years although back in 2012 i did go back on days for a short while. I just wanted to ask what your shift and hour patterns at your depot are... here in Norfolk i notice alot of bus companies now work a 4-day work rota pattern which on one hand is great because you will mostly get off 3 days per week unless with some lines you might do a 6 or even 7 days in a row work directive but means we work a 12 hour day .. which was a shock to me at first coming from Arriva the shires which a maximum would be a spread-over of 10.4 hours but here we work like 6am-6pm or 12noon-midnight which are killers :(
    Many Thanks Carl

      Something from my past.
      I was based at Slatyford depot Newcastle upon Tyne for 38 years.
      Was a conductor for just over a year before going in the driving school.
      On the buses just before deregulation we had managed to get shifts that were not too long and plenty running time on service, a relaxing day on Sundays, whereas just before I left Sundays were the worst shifts to work, very tight running times, on a Sunday morning you were racing round trying to keep on time, even though there was very little traffic on the road and not many passengers to pick up, and I have heard since that it is getting a lot worse for the drivers.
      I was always running late, so one day I was told the depot manager wanted to see me about late running, I thought great, a chance to have my say and I did, the union man came in with me, they told me it was not a discipline and not to worry about it, the truth was I was looking forward to it, the manager asked if I was having problems with the ticket machine, I said I had no problems with it, then he asked me the question why I was always running late, so I told him it was the tight running times that was to blame, then he asked if there was any particular journey that was really bad, so I told him about one journey that was right in the middle of the rush hour, that if you left on time you could guarantee that you would be late before you finished the journey, so he looked at the running board said I was right and that it shouldn't be like that and that was the end of the interview.
