  • I go over common CVT issues that give the Continuously Variable Transmission a bad reputation. Because CVTs have become so common it is important to understand them so that we can have a better experience with them. Everything I go over is about CVTs in general, not a particular one.

    Thanks for dropping by! I know I have a lot of subscribers who own the WRX with the CVT and I want to be clear this video is not about that car, but CVTs in general. I actually think that Subaru did a great job in the execution of that CVT.

    Thank you Boost for all your videos 😊. Actually you helped me with these correct a problem that was induced by my dealer when he replaced my cvtf on a 2015 wrx. Bought the Bluetooth dongle and scanned the error P0841 and learned later on that the cvtf level was much lower than what it should be. Went to the dealer, and did the repair myself in his workshop by refilling with the appropriate high torque cvtf type, quantity and cvt learning procedure and ended up correcting my cvt operation up to par. The only issue that i still have to resolve is that during a hot weather, when pushing the car, it does not want to go at some range of the pedal. When weather cools down, problem disappears. Am suspecting the secondary pressure sensor or an electrical cvt harness being affected by the hot temp weather / metal expansion / bad connectivity ?! Unfortunately my dealer does not have the intended guru and I wish Subi would have a technical support web portal for the enthusiasts. Any thoughts?

    The most people I know that hates the WRX CVT are the FB groups Keyboard Gangsters who drives a stick shift. Very toxic subaru community. You cant go wrong with CVT or Manual Subaru based on my experience.

    I got a CVT in my 2018 Civic Hatch Sport. It’s a great transmission, responsive, feels nice to drive and doesn’t do annoying CVT things like others. It feels very similar a regular auto MOST of the time. I drive semi hard so I got the turbo engine with the stronger CVT in their so I don’t have to worry about screwing it up. I guess my next car will be an SI.

    New CVT owner here... Went from 2016 6spd WRX (yeah, I know... Why??!!) to a 2021 Ascent... Much smoother and better ride, especially in stop and go traffic (which I some how always end up in) and far better for the family...

      I went from 17 WRX CVT to 19 Ascent and also bought a 20 STI.

    If you get a car with a cvt your only safe bet is Asin Toyota Cvts.

    In my opinion the new civics specifically 2019+ have great CVT options I have one and it’s good I haven’t seen issues and I drive it foot to the floor everyday for the last 25k miles only issue I had was basically transmission fluid but that is recommended to be changed between 20k-30k so that is basically normal

      Wow, a fluid change every three years. How much will it cost? I guess it isn't so bad as VW specs a DSG fluid change every 40k miles.
      But much like brake fluid (changed every 2 yrs), how many ppl are going to forget and not change it or put it off for a year or three...

    I've had no issues with my 18 cvt as of yet knock on wood. I do take good care of it though. I do miss my manual but my knees are just too bad for it now. I can say though avoid Mitsubishi and older Nissan cvts like the plague. My mother is having issues with the cvt in her outlander sport right now and its been replaced once at 30k miles not good.

    Does driving in manual on intelligent mode in the CVT burn more gas in your experience? It's fun to drive like this sometimes but I was wondering if it was burning more gas.

    I own a ‘19 CVT WRX and I honestly don’t mind it at all mainly because I can’t drive stick yet (but I do want to learn) but also I wanted to have a somewhat fun daily driver and it does all of that. This is not me saying the CVT is better than a manual as it does have its inherent problems as you mentioned but it’s not completely horrible either as some ppl make it out which is something you also said. If you prefer manual there’s no need for you to disrespect other ppl if that’s something you prefer. Plus I’m the one spending the money on it, not you, so keep it to yourself and mind your business lol. But in all if you take care of it and don’t do anything foolish, you’ll be fine.
    Btw Boost thank you for your input and experience with your CVT WRX. I was watching your videos when I was doing research on my current car.

      Right on, I'm not the kind of person to knock anyone on what they choose to do with their money. I have my opinions, like anyone else, but I'd rather try to help you get the most of what you have than try to beat you down. We're all enthusiasts.

    CVT cost is a struggle for me too as they always said - and it plays out - Honda, Toyota CVT but their Acura, Lexus counterparts are always gears - but I think cheaper relates to the engineering and tuning - CVT can cover a lot of poor or incomplete matching up of components. Maybe cost is storing or updating the extra UNITS they have to stock for down the road. I only know Chrylser used CVT (Nissan supplied) and magazing and OTHER CAR MANUFACTURERS just put them through the ringer on the shortcomings .. Chrysler put it in their engineering binder to never .. ever .. to use a CVT going forward .. and they kept to it .. BUT all those who just beat them up are now using CVT in their mainline mass produced lines. I have my first iVT and time will tell, but "steady" seems to be the catch phrase at lower speed in particular .. brand new when I was figuring it out .. it did the "tug tug tug" feel a couple times but I think my power was too low for it to decide to get going. I got the 8/160 warranty as the 5/100 - there is a lot missing from coverage in it, so I did not want that upsetting discussion about "why is that considered wear and tear and not a early failure based on the warranty hinting it should go longer than what it did ($900 part charge on my 05 Neon's alternator was that one).

    I just had my entire CVT transmission replaced in my 2016 Forester 2.5i after 95k miles. I was hearing a droning noise when going slow speeds and slowing to a stop. Replaced under warranty. I'm hoping the new tranny can go another 95k miles. Are you planning on keeping the WRX CVT for the long run?

    Would like to have heard something on maintenance. Subaru says "lifetime," but we know that's not good for the transmission. No fluid is lifetime. Your thoughts?

      He has mentioned that in one of his older video’s, he doesn’t agree with Subaru saying that the fluid is “lifetime”

      Indeed. CVTF should be replaced cause of the normal metal mechanical tear and wear, where Particles are released in the slurry. Though fine particles are cought by the Cvtf filter and larger ones by the cvtf strainer, I am suspecting that some will affect the oil pressure sensors operations or impact the oil pressure levels in the valve body different labyrinth due to viscosity changes by the particules. From my experience - driving a daily wrx cvt for the past 8 years, I would recommend replacing the CVTF, (considering driving style, severe weather temperature changes, etc.) at 120,000 Km or 75,000 miles to be on the safe side. However, the replacement of the cvtf has to be done well, making sure the right quantity is put back in. Not getting this right will trigger the error code P0841. This said, I really enjoy my 2015 cvt wrx and am planning to drive it for another 10 years, by maintaining it well. So far cost of maintenance for the past 8 years, is an average of 800$ per year. Last, and since the topic of this video is about wrx cvt issue, my only issue is that during a hot temp weather when pushing the car, seems that it won't wanna go at some range. But when weather is cool, problem disappears. I am suspecting the cvt secondary pressure sensor or an electrical harness. Any thoughts? Thank you

    Dead on tutorial. I drive stick. I'm Iucky to even find a stick and one with minimal rev lag. I will never purchase a car with a CVT.

    Is it possible to swap the cvt transmission for a 6 speed or even dual clutch trans? I would to see your thoughts on this

      Well, vehicle dependent, possible sure, but probably not economically feasible. So much is needed to pull that off. The CVT is actually more expensive than the manual (at least in the WRX) so it makes no sense right off the bat. The cost would be probably a third of the car new, so yeah, unless you're doing the work yourself probably not a good idea.

    2016 Maxima with 44k miles and no issues. Do the maintenance and change your fluid every 30k. Have fun driving the car just don’t go racing everybody thats comes up on a red light.

    I have a 2016 Corolla with a cvt and I get that drone sound when I accelerate. I guess a fluid change wouldn't help any? I'll just have to spend $6000 to replace the cvt huh?

    Is Nissan CVT better than before now? I am planning to buy a late model (2019/2021) Nissan Versa or Sentra or Altima.

      I'm sure they are getting better, but issues covered by the extended warranty go all the way to 2020 (maybe even 2021) so I would do a lot of research before taking that dive.

      Nissan literally makes the worst CVT. They are the reason why CVT is hated.

    If it's a simple transmission with few moving parts, why is it a $7k replacement? CVTs work great in ATVs, scooters, and snow machines...but in cars it isn't the most ideal location. The engine noise and the way the power is applied/delivered. In lighter vehicles or ones that have space and weight concerns (see vehicles listed above), the CVT works great.
    Granted, EVs don't have gears/transmissions, but the acceleration is nearly instantaneous whereas the CVT has a significant delay.

    The CVT is good from a fuel economy standpoint, the pulley can get a high gear ratio that gear style trans unable to. the weakness of CVT is the belt drive. You absolutely have to treat the CVT right. the most harmful thing you could do to a CVT is lanuching the car from a dead stop or full throttle at crawing speed. whenever the belt slip on the tapper pulley, your CVT is f@@ked.

    CVTs aren't bad... but a WRX is a bad choice for them because people want to push power on them... which is exactly what you don't want to do with a CVT. Yes, you can hold some power, but given that it's just as expensive to replace the stupid thing as swap out most of the drive train from the engine to the wheels with the STI drivetrain.... better to go with the latter and make fun of the STI owners as you'd now be driving the STI they should have had =P

    I wonder if Subaru's close proximity to Toyota pushed them in the direction of the CVTs. It's almost unheard of to have a REAL sports car with one in it. Also, Kia decided to circumvent the CVT nonsense and go with a DCT across all platforms. Wish subaru would've done the same

      Subaru has been using CVTs long before Toyota bought a 20% stake in the company. Subaru is pretty much an independent company. Toyota doesn’t even use CVT in anything larger than a 2.0 engine (Corolla).

      Kia and Hyundai use CVT as well. They call it “IVT”. And DCT has its fair share of problems.

    Not everyone wants a CVT to save money; I am ready to lose money to have & keep my CVT, because how it works is awesome. Also, I drove a Ford Taurus, which has a regular auto transmission, and still it has system protection to prevent harsh launch from 0km otherwise gears will wear out very quickly if not break. So that “sluggish” launch is meant to protect transmission and other gears rather than keep low mileage. Notice that SUBARUS are AWD and that means there are gears everywhere around the power train, which is why there is a protective prudent launch in auto transmission. Also new regular auto transmissions are no longer steel, but rather fiberglass that doesn’t erode, but actually breaks. And you will not know when they will break. I think you are one of those trashing CVTs for superficial & financial reasons.

    The life expectancy of a 6-speed automatic transmission is double that of a CVT... 200,000 miles to 100,000 miles.
