The song does have a meaning: YYZ are the call signs of Toronto’s Pearson’s airport (their home). So, whenever they saw the tags on their bags saying YYZ, they knew they were finally heading back home to their families. One day, One of them (Neil I believe) heard the Morse code tone in the plane announcing the YYZ airport, he liked the sound of it, and created the into of the song (yes, the intro is Morse code for YYZ).
The crowd was literally singing an instrumental. That says it all about this magical band. BTW, YYZ is the aviation call sign for Toronto airport (Where Rush is from). The rhythm at the beginning is YYZ in Morse code.
Of course, for our good Canadian boys, the title should be pronounced Why Why Zed :) Rush released a lot of great studio albums, and most included at least one instrumental track. From 1974 -2012, they released 19 studio albums, 11 live albums, and 11 compilations. They have the 3rd most consecutive gold or platinum albums, behind The Beatles and The Stones. But they really showed what they could do in live shows. Neil Peart is widely regarded as one of the greatest percussionists of all time (especially by other drummers). When you check out the drum solo recommended elsewhere, you will see that he sometimes used an even bigger setup, but he could hold everyone's attention with just one snare. Alex Lifeson, similarly, was a virtuoso on lead guitar. And Geddy Lee was a phenomenal bassist, who also played keyboards and was lead singer. His vocals had a lot of detractors, but millions of rabid Rush fans would disagree. He could simultaneously sing, play bass, and would play foot pedal synth. I was lucky enough to see them in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa on various tours. Every one was a fantastic show.
His whole stage riser spins. "The Professor", Neil Peart (R.I.P. - we miss you) was the inspiration for millions of drummers around the world (including myself) and is widely considered to be one of the greatest rock drummers of all time.
Hello from Brazil! From Rush I also recommend the official videos for "Tom Sawyer" and "Subdivisions". Also live versions of "Red Barchetta", "Xanadu" and "Freewill" from the album "Exit: Stage Left"! All videos on UA-cam, of course!
I agree this was wild, three next suggestions in this order. You said why did it take so long to get to YYZ, then you'll ask the same when you watch: Neil Peart Drum Solo live in Frankfurt - he'll play the whole kit you just saw Rush - Xanadu, exit stage left live - he actually had more percussion instruments on stage than what you just saw (before electronic drums). Working Man - Time Machine Live. - All out screamer. They modified the beginning to be regee before unleashing the face melt. Then as a bonus, 2 more instrumentals. Via La Strangiato Malignant Narcissism
During the tour, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart played to some of the biggest crowds of the band’s career, including 4️⃣0️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ people at the tour’s final stop in Rio de Janeiro. That concert was released in 2003 as RUSH IN RIO, which was certified gold in the U.S. and Canada.
Now watch Neil Peart's drum solo live in Frankfurt (same tour). Then Working Man, 2112 (it's 21 minutes long, so plan accordingly), Xanadu live (1981 Exit...Stage Left), Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions, and really any other Rush you can. :)
When you said that's a unique drum set; I immediately knew you haven't reacted to Rush Xanadu Exit Stage Left. It's a concert video - you will not regret it.
As previously stated, YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport. The airport broadcasts YYZ in Morse code, and the band was introduced to the rhythm as Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport, and it stuck with them. The start of the song is YYZ in Morse Code.
If you haven’t heard Xanadu, that could be next. It’s their longest intro before the lyrics starts. In their older concerts, Neil had all the drums AND ALL the percussion too. Chimes, bells, blocks, triangle...
This is amazing , thank you and the one person ( or more ) who recommend this. "New" to me , loved it! Pure and basic talent and instruments. And saying this I realize I am not doing it justice by just that. Read the other comments and found a lot of information about them. Thank you all. Keep this up HxC , really enjoy your sincere reactions. And also the facial expressions , those in combination with what you are saying are a genuine combination.
Neil Peart R.I.P. the finest drummer of his prog/experimental genre in history, though he could give Buddy Rich a run for his money. And more than just a drummer, a lyricist composer and percussionist. Coincidentally Pau from The Warnings favourite drummer 👌
@@chriswood1054 There's a lot of talent out there. But the current music scene is all about vocals, so artists focus on vocal performance rather than musicianship. That's a failure of the consumer, not the talent.
Rush filled socker stadium's in south American by themselves, been a Rush fan since 1978 . I've watched Geddy Lee play bass ,synth pedals & sing at the same time.
Edwin Mercer, I appreciate you and your support. I am so happy enjoyed the video and the music. And yes please send me those requests through one of the links in the videos description box. And this is new age modern, back in the 70s before electronic percussion he had real percussion, chimes , bells wood blocks ,triangles, this song was one of the top guitar heroes songs
Believe it or not, Neil's drumset has actually been larger than this! You should watch the video of Rush's song "Xanadu", from the live 1981 concert film called "Exit, Stage Left"!! The music they were doing in the late 1970's, when the song was written (1977), was very progressive and orchestral. So Neil had tubular bells, wind chimes, Glockenspiel, Wood Blocks, triangles, xylophone, tuned cowbell tree, a Gong Drum (used to have an actual Gong cymbal, back in 1978-1979), and THEN he had all the rest of his huge drum kit, with assorted cymbals!! You have to see that performance to understand how amazing Rush is/was!!
Welcome to the RUSH rabbit hole! You have over 40 years of progressive rock to explore. There are IMO 3 Live staple video's, Neil Peart's Drum Solo - Live in Frankfurt, Xanadu - Live Exit... Stage Left, Working Man - Live in Cleveland. Check out the video for Headlong Flight. A few songs to consider, Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, Witch Hunt, Nobody's Hero, Manhattan Project, plus many, many more... It's a deep hole you are entering but you will not be disappointed! Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦
"La Villa Strangiato" if you want a Rush instrumental that lasts a good bit longer. Not better, just different. The official video is pretty awesome too.
I know the Rush purists will disagree, but check out the official Tom Sawyer video. It has some terrific drum work, and it showcases each of them and really clearly shows Geddy Lee’s talent as lead singer, bassist and keyboard player in one song. You likely have heard the song and didn’t know it was them-but it’s a great intro to the genius that is Rush. 3 guys making some of the most perfect music ever played, with lyrics that are among the most intelligent ever written. And Neil Peart on drums has often been described as “your favorite drummer’s favorite drummer”. Enjoy the Rush Rabbit Hole-I envy all that you get to discover for the first time.
If you want to see an amazing drum solo. Watch Neal Peart (the professor) drum solo in Frankfurt, Germany. Rush is another iconic Canadian band . This is an instrumental, try some of their vocal ones. Maybe start with “Tom Sawyer” and “ Spirit of Radio “.
🙋🏿♀️ Obviously your next Rush video has to be 🥁 Neil Peart Drum Solo (Live in Frankfurt). 😁 Mostly cause I want to see 🤯 your head explode. BTW: YYZ is the code for Toronto Airport and the intro is YYZ in Morse Code. 🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
Quick tip, when looking for live performances, if you see Rio (Brazil) or River Plate (Argentina), you will see the most enthusiastic crowds ever. Regarding Rush. To me their best live performance, where you can see their virtuosity at the top of their game is the one below. "Working Man" by Rush (Time Machine Tour: Live In Cleveland) [OFFICIAL] ua-cam.com/video/sI5VuBzo-Qc/v-deo.html Also I would recommend to rent the movie Rush:Beyond The Lighted Stage, one of the best documentary about a band ever and especially learning about the drummer Neil Peart's life, which is unbelievable.

Sounds like you need to do a Neil Peart solo. Pick any of them, it will be close to perfection. If you want to listen to another instrwntal masterpiece, La Villa Strangiato. There are several though. I say La Villa Strangiato because it is straight EPIC. As far as songs, there's 19 albums and a whole lot of kick ass music.
Who needs lyrics when the crowd is singing to an instrumental 🤷♂️ This instrumental is just a warm up. You should check out La Villa Strangiato from these guys. It's incredible! Take care ✌
When tens of thousands of people are singing to an instrumental, you know it’s something special. Great job.
I guess its time for you to see The Professor use all of his drums...

Holy crap!! This is a strong intro!! This is definitely a hype song!! Soo good!! 😁
This is not an intro, it's actually the YYZ song but there is a video called "rush best intro ever" you should check out here on YT.
"O Baterista" from this same concert is an AMAZING drum solo. It will melt your brain. I guarantee it.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
« An hour and a half? »
No no, Rush used to do 3 hrs (yes yes, 3) shows in their later years!
It's RUSH. This is what is missing from modern music, the mastery of the instrument.
I recommend Polyphia. Kids will be just fine.
Well.. that. And actual talent.

Nice Brother, I am and always have been a huge Rush fan as they use to play our gym at school before they got big. I was born and raised in Toronto.
YYZ is the code for Toronto International Airport. Every time you fly there, your bags are tagged YYZ.
How many times in your life have you seen a concert crowd singing along with an instrumental?
Other good instrumentals from Rush: "La Villa Strangiato", "The Main Monkey Business", "Malignant Narcissism", "Leave that Thing Alone"....
Lyrics supplied by Rio, in Portuguese!!!! Check out Prof. Peart's drum solo Live in Frankfurt!! 🔥 💣 💥
The drummer stands up and the drum kit rotates around him bringing the drums that he will use in front of him. Peace.
