  • The Polish Lavvu (tepee) is a very popular poncho + shelter configuration in the UK and Europe. It's a canvas material, so it's highly breathable and you do not get much condensation which is a big problem with synthetic ponchos and tents.
Pair this up with the 303 waterproofing, and this is an excellent option. You can use it as a poncho, shelter, ground cover, gear cover, collecting water, etc.

These were made in 3 sixes from small to large. Yours is a size small as indicated by the single rivet.
A quality canvas does not need a waterproofing agent if it is properly weathered(seasoned).
This is accomplished by soaking the canvas until well saturated. This will cause the fibers to swell and fill in the micro gaps in much the same manner as wooden planks of a boats hull do or even a wine barrel.
Soak the canvas then let it dry in the sun, then repeat the process several times.
This will preserve the breathability of the material.
The shoulder flaps are supposed to be on the inside otherwise the arm slits will leak water.

      Hello James
Canvas is a bit weighty however the advantage is major durability..
I've never weighed the polish lavuu but I'd guesstimate the weight to be about 4lbs including the poles and stakes.
The lavuu would be best suited for cold weather camping.
      Cheers

One easy modification is to add paracord looks to each of the grommets to give you extra space to use larger pegs. It also allows you to have a small gap around the edge for light and airflow if you want

Concise video not heard of 303 before but it has to be tough for marine use., an easy cheap mod are bungee balls to the base eyelets, stops rot from the ground, gives you extra foot print size and is great for airing, if it’s cold fold/arrange the groundsheet as a bathtub and use your gear to draft proof or alternatively remove bungees. Buttons at the front can be complimented with pop studs also as some folk complain of fiddly buttons. 👍

Does it really make any sense to 'wear' a part of your survival home when a military ,lightweight poncho does the job, and can be used as top-cover for the Lavv in extreme rain conditions ? Just a thought.

Great video my friend. Have had mine for a few years now. Have made a couple of vids with mine too. I used a product over here in the UK called Fabsil. I believe its very similar. I heated it up to just above luke warm and then with a spray gun coated my whole lavvu. It has lasted nearly 2 years without needing atop up. I tried mine both inside out and outside in. It all depends in what level of rain is hitting it. Either way it still works. Thanks for sharing and look forward to seeing more. Have just subbed ya buddy. All the best. Chris EMBA Bushcraft 😁👍

Like water off a ducks back with the 303. I still have 2 canvas tarps I use which were treated with linseed oil and dried. Works well, but time consuming. I have had half shelters on my list for years. That's a good one!

Its inside out. I worked with the polish army and they know this stuff. They used these on basic training right in to the 2000s.
They would get S::t when they made this mistake.
    It's a common mistake though.

  • @johndal7629
    @johndal7629 5 років тому

I would have separated the two ponchos and soaked them over night in that solution in a bucket so to get every inch of this fabric waterproofed throughout inside and outside then let it dry out 100% and a few extra gromets between the existing ones so water will have less of a chance to be blown under the tent in strong winds. I was also thinking if you bought a cheap 3 season tent and by using this solution you could make it 100% waterproof or any tent you buy that is not 100% waterproof..

Great video. I've checked Etsy and nothing came up when I searched for Polish Lavvu, and have only seen 1 or 2 on Ebay and they wanted almost $300 for the 2 shelter halves. Do you know of any other place on earth you can buy one of these without taking a second mortgage on your house to buy? I think it was about a year ago I seen this setup that you could buy online at Coleman's military surplus and it was under $50, they're out of stock now. Should have bought one then, but didn't.

Just keep an eye on Etsy. That's where I found my Polish lavvu set up in 2018. I paid around $40 USD plus about $30 shipping from Holland to Minnesota. The shop on Etsy is natostock. Looks like they got more after I got mine and sold out of them right away. I had good customer service from them.
