Interestingly enough, we had a tech school instructor tell us almost this exact thing 18 years ago. He had been stationed at Howard AB in Panama and this was something that the Jungle Warfare school put out!
Its poncho over everything for me. Keeps everything nice and dry, just gotta be mindful of internal moisture fogging stuff up. If I've got time to dig into my ruck I got time to move a poncho. If rounds are flying than staying dry isn't even on my mind. Also the poncho flipped to the side and back looks LotT Dunedain Ranger stoic AF. 😁
Do you think gortex ponchos could remedy the moisture? If they make one in in gortex, as it has tiny holes just big enough to let vapor through but not liquid water.
@@chupachuuups706 Goretex doesn't work when it's actually wet. You'd be better off wearing a poncho with vents, but that could make it less useful as a tarp and increase cost(less than goretex, but still).
Very cool idea. With my belt kit I usually just went rifle outside poncho and the lower mag pouches are pretty easy to access under the bottom. However anyone other setup I think this is the way to go especially to conceal your weapon and gear similar to the early troops in Afghanistan
Deluth Trading DOTF pants have worked well for me in the general day to day wet PNW, and in the wet and mossy Gifford Pinchot. Dry on the move. When it gets below 45, I break out the Beyond Clothing L5 softshell pants. 🎶“Meet me down by the railroad track, track.”🎶
Nice vid. All hail the military poncho! Even hunting in an M81 USGI poncho, I run it over top of everything like this. Sadly, these ponchos are getting harder to find in surplus stores around me and the knock-offs just aren't as good. Tragic.
Look up "ORC Industries poncho." They are supposed to be the official mil supplier of ponchos and are reasonably priced. In 2024, I think they have options at the $40 mark.
I've had the same thoughts on ponchos. I'm starting to think less is more, tech and the rest of the stuff, rather go old school. Leave some of the tech behind if the big guys are trying to find you they're going to do it, they have all the goodies tech stuff. lol
One point to note (I’m very interested to hear if you have a good way to counter this) is that I have run a rifle under my poncho in wet weather and when i pull my rifle out my optic is completely fogged over. This is another in the list of items that have recently been turning me toward iron sights because of the extreme simplicity and versatility of irons.
This is what I use to help that issue. amzn.to/45ogeI2 Magnified Optics will almost always out preform irons. (At least that's what I have found out throughout my military Career) Your mileage may very.
@@mikejeffsteel I'm assuming if I'm letting the can cool off, the conflict has subsided. So, I don't think anyone other than me an my group would be there to see it
It melts a giant hole in the poncho. I have firsthand experience. Same with a hot muzzle. You have to remember to keep it off the poncho even when outside.
Bit weird to do with a waterproof nylon poncho, but if you changed the cut of the poncho to be more similar to an old school right side opening cloak flipping the poncho open might become a bit more elegant. You (hopefully) shouldn't get that pile up on your right shoulder, giving you a clear shoulder for shouldering your rifle. This is essentially medieval sword drawing tech. Cutting a right side arm slit would however compromise it's utility as a backup shelter.
For all it's perks and versatility, the poncho has one major drawback, if it's raining, and your humping up a mountain, your getting wet regardless, just not with rain water. You can fling it open to vent, but really your choices are, wet from rain, or wet from sweat. Personal preference maybe.
I'm curious to know if the poncho is: 1). Produced in OCP, and 2). Still issued to Marines/Army servicemen as standard equipment? I know that the ECWCS gear has become more and more available to the Army, but the poncho (and liner) just seem(s) like it(they) are just versatile enough pieces of individual gear that they should still round out part of a servicemen's basic equipment issue.
Yes, they have them in OCP/Multicam. The issue part is hit or miss some units still issue then and others do not. I have been issued a poncho liner at every unit except for one so far. As for the poncho I've had only 2 units that issued the poncho. I Have always been issued level 6 or Gortex top and bottom. OCP poncho amzn.to/3ROemnM
The shell should keep a lot of rain out of the inside of the helmet. You could put a hood up around it, although it's not very practical. Realistically, there is no good method.
I started running a trex arms quad flap which I am really digging. Added a canteen and tq to my left side and a small gp on right side. Thoughts for the gp was any overflow and a rite in rain pad, pen and boo-boo kit. I’m torn if I add a mini dangler for an ifak. Do you find the danglers get in the way or no?
Here is the one I typically use and is featured in this video. It is from helicon tex. They are often expensive of out of stock but today looks like they have it for a good price l. amzn.to/48Gv52l
Why not wear a cloak? Has the same function but is open in the middle. With modern technology it could even have a system to keep it closed but can be easily open.
Keeping the gun and gear on the inside protects them from the elements. I wouldn't want my rifle and optics rained on for hours if it wasn't somehow necessary.

i mean if u ever wear it. what else can u do ? thats absolut basic isnt it ? Sling and weapon on top? doesnt make sense to get stuck. Nice that u show us but idk its obvious isnt it ?
Why not just run both your gear and rifle outside the poncho? Yeah it'll all get wet, I get that, but essentials can be made warerproof/resistant, and you don't have to expose your clothing/inside of thr poncho to the rain

I live in the Caribbean, all year round tropical weather, avg temp 85 and alot of rain. The poncho is the best solution for this region.

I've been considering the poncho for awhile now. You're just a dude who doesn't wanna be soaked. Not overly suspicious

A poncho is the only rain gear I need.

@@PreparedAirman Interesting regarding the "by the unit" issue policy. Thanks for the information.
Current issue OCP/Scorpion poncho is quite pricey and hard to get at surplus store for now. I've seen one on ebay for about $150 or so.

About what we did in the 80s before Gortex was really a thing. I still have my poncho, but someone stole my wooby.
