    Greetings Guro Paul, Footwork is essential to overcoming an agressive oponent in my opinion beacuse, when you are mobile and fluent with body motion, you disrupt the flow of their fight game. When you eliminate an oponent's ability to get set, you take them out of their comfort zone; which creates openings for you exploit off of their mistakes. Sincerely, Harun Abdul-Ali CMHA Police Dept. Cleveland, OH.

      +Harun Abdul-Ali Harun, Right on! And I love the fact that you said "create openings" This is exactly what we do in Kali. We don't wait, we make stuff happen! :)

    Footwork is foundational - figuratively and literally! Many times problems with techniques can be traced to bad footwork. One little thing though: your drill is lop-sided. After the leftward traversal, you need to go right using the same footwork pattern so you stay balanced. You might also try switching the stick to the other hand when you do this.

    Is footwork important? Yes. Why? Because footwork is the groundwork that sets up the movement for the rest of the body. Is foot work dominantly important. No. No aspect of train is dominant other than to train for it's own sake. Footwork is important enough that it's worth paying attention to in order to understand it's relationship to the rest of the body's movement or else you can not properly generate speed or power. But to focus on it as a sole technique of it's own is to forget the natural movement of the body as a whole. Now, I'm NOT saying Guru Paul is FOCUSING on footwork, but he is teaching you how to learn the importance of the relationship of how footwork effects the body's movement. But thats' just my opinion.

      Timothy Barfield Totally! Every aspect of training is important for the whole picture. Isolate the components then work on coordinating them to work together. :)

    Your Footwork is the foundation of your every attack when it comes to FMA, It initiates your attack or defense.

    entering at 45 degrees or not, if you advance into distance with your first step and then bringing up the rear foot to the front foot while striking as you are doing, i will time and hit you before your strike has barely begun, the reason is you have gained me the place where i can hit you with just the motion of the hand or hand and body together with your entering into distance then striking making two tempos or slow times with your feet out of what should be done in one tempo or time while i have the quick motion of the hand or hand and body together which is one quick time while slipping a little back. if you dont fly back out of distance the instance i bagin my strike or thrust, you cant avoid being hit while i remain safe.
    food for thought

    Isn't your balance vulnerable at the point where both your feet are together?

    • @kalicenter
      @kalicenter  9 років тому +1

      Bernard Vera No it's not.

    • @Tyler_Lalonde-
      @Tyler_Lalonde- 9 років тому +6

      Yes and no. Some styles think it's bad to move since you can be pushed off balance easier. But it depends on a few things like if your in a ring and wait to see a vulnerable spot in their footwork. But that only works because you wait. But with real combat you don't time to waist and wait for an opening. Also since Paul's attacking he's covered.

      Kali has a unique aspect to their footwork where they emphasize the inbetween movement (the stop in the middle) of the overall of tue step. This for several reasons. One, it emphasizes the importance of moveing the trailing appendage out of the angle of attack as a full sweep hitting nothing but air continues to follow it's path and if you move, but you leg/foot is still in the way. Well, anyone remember Montey P and the holy grail? Yeah, no more leg foot. It also helps the student stay mindfull of moving at angles while steping through. Other arts also use the same movement, especially Karate and other hard Japanese arts. The leg comes forward, passes closely by the ankle and then continues forward. A cresent moon shape. I said two right? Two, it is an essential movement when using takedowns that require passing from the front to the rear or around rather the opponents limbs in order to check the limb. This movement a in training makes this motion muscle memorized so that the movement becomes reflexive. Hope this helps guys. 😄

      Bernard Vera I've had the same issue with Kali footwork, mostly on the basis of the Judo game. The stick or blade changes the game. Bringing your feet together while in a clinch and looking for throws can be a bad thing, but when you're dealing with the ranges and quickness needed with a weapon, bringing your feet together allows a faster change of direction. At least that's my understanding.

      if you don't think you should bring your feet together when you move perhaps you should give up on walking.

    Without the proper foundation a building will not stand for long.

    Do you breathe in the normal way when executing the move, or is it still breathing with the diaphragm through the nose and out through the mouth? I still have the bad habit of holding the breath when doing a move.

    • @kalicenter
      @kalicenter  9 років тому +2

      aerospike00 Breath in through the diaphragm with the nose and exhale through the mouth. There is a specific rhythm that helps move oxygen and then a rhythm to sustain oxygen. Maybe I'll cover this in a video some time. Great question. Not many ask about the breathing and it's very important.
