Esmé Patterson: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Bob Boilen | February 10, 2017 - There's a vibrance to the current music of Esmé Patterson that I wasn't expecting, having listened to her previous band Paper Bird. Gone are the banjos and remnants of folk music, and in their place are electric guitars - sometimes fierce and, here at the Tiny Desk, somewhat understated. She's a relative newcomer to the guitar, making it part of her songwriting only since leaving Paper Bird. But all of this instrumentation is meant to be supportive, not center-stage. At the heart of these songs, from her album We Were Wild, is a reach for independence:
I can't sit still 'cause I'm no mountain
I can't sit so still 'cause I'm no mountain
I can't sit still forever, I'm no mountain
I'm human, I'm human
If there's a thread that ties Patterson's songs together, it's discovering who you are and standing strong. She's doing that well - with a powerful and sensitive band that's got her back.
We Were Wild is available now:

God bless the day I found this channel.
thats today for me :D
Lau Va amen to that
Lau Va same praise to the Good Lord. This is a good place.
there are around 20 very similar channels in quality and variety, i should share some of my favourites, will do when i have time :)
Amen to that sister. Most videos, i just click loop and repeat endlessly.
That bassist looks like he should be drinking a beer and piloting a fishing vessel off the coast of New England. 10/10 Would bang.
And then one day he would say, "we're gonna need a bigger boat."
And he also pretty much makes the whole band.
Jamie Knowles a lot of us bass players look like New England's finest deep sea fishermen.
andramoie thanks!!!
and he is playing lefty upside down bass!
Her voice is immediately captivating.
Ian i liked her better with her other hair style
Yeah...it really changed how her voice sounds.....
Sean Rook lol there's a distinct change in her music I think all woman musicians should cut there hair when they want a new style of music. She's great I didn't like this the first time I heard it. But I really like it now.
The preceding comment says far more about the poster than it does about the guy on drums. Drummer seems like a good dude, I'd have a beer with him.
christine9090 what a bizarre, violent comment. People (myself included) watch tiny desk to enjoy music being made, so if you don't enjoy this video, a different one is just a simple click away. No need for the weird aggro commentary.
I want the squeak at 2:06 to be my ringtone. I might even take my phone off silent for that.
Sean Rook ME😂
Sean Rook trippppped me out and I'm tryna do it and drivin my ppl insane last 3 minutes😆🌟
Sean Rook giggled myself into a coughing fit.
From the first "I can't keep running, i'm no river" I melted. I love this!
Yesss, i've been waiting for her appearance on tiny desk since i've discovered her playing beside Shakey Graves 2 years ago. (:
Just left a comment about this👊! Do you know their song "Dearly Departed"? It's a great story song.
a courageous performance from the always sparkling Esme! Makes wildflowers blossom in my heart!
That bass! And upside down as well. Awesome sound.
Thanks! I taught myself on a regular old right handed guitar and never got a left handed one. Then moved to bass.
Monster bass player. Love it
THANKS!!!
Her guitar tone is so perfect, and that bass player is insane aaaaahhhhhh
There's something about her voice that I'm hearing a lot of these days from girl singers, like Margaret Glaspy who you had on recently.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just a trend towards that particular quality that I've started noticing.
Very true. It's that Sharon van Etten/ Alvvays kinda voice. (give them a listen if you liked this tdc ;) )
I love Sharon's voice.
I agree but no complaints! I adore it!
Margaret Glaspy is great too. I know what you mean btw
MidtownSkyport there's a hint of the great Natalie Merchant from back in the day 10k Maniacs
Captivating. I don't know if it's the vocals that snare or the smile and the eyes that hold me there. But, I wait, gladly.
THE Bass has so much soul,,, Thank You, x
I don’t know how I got here but I’m glad I did! Pure talent. I’ve never heard of her before but I’m excited to hear new music.
Amo vc cantando!!!
Meu Filho Junior me apresentou vc cantando.
Amei!!!?
E hoje ficou só lembranças.
Ouço vc Esmé para te lo de volta bem próximo,,
Ainda que seja por algum tempo.
Gratidão ❤
So much emotion went into every second of this performance. Truly captivating
One of my favorite tiny desks. I listen to this way too much. I'm sure my dog hates these three songs. "AGAIN?!? Maaaaaaaan...."
She does some music with shakey graves, if you havent listened to his tiny desk give it a listen, im in the same boat with that recording, i listen to it like 3 times a week.
This version of No River is just sooo pleasant. Love Esme!

I fell head over heels in love at 2:05
Can't stop playing these songs. They make me feel good.

Her smile! She's obviously loving what she's doing, that makes me love what she's doing. Thanks as always TDC. :)
WHo is this left handed beast in the rhythm section. stole the show.
Its kind of bizarre the fact that all music i listened to through the last two months was exclusively tiny desk concerts. I wanna hug you all for offering us the opportunity to meet all these wonderfully talented artists! Special thanks to tank and the bangas for making my days more soulful

_Gone are the banjos and remnants of folk music, and in their place are electric guitars_
"Judas!"
Why you bringing Bob Dylan into this?
At 5:11 I got intense Bob Dylan vibes vocally and it soaked my heart in pleasure
this was so beautiful and relaxing and just the perfect music for editing photos.
She touched my heart. Thank you Ms Patterson... Your Bass guy plays it upside down, very cool.... Thanks again Tiny Desk!!
Tiny Desk always introduces me to great bands. Yall should get Homeshake on!
First time hearing her, and may all the Music Gods be in her favor when making music. I am instantly hooked.

Just discover Esmé weeks ago on Spotify and what a great surprise to see she here tough! I'm adicted to his album "we were Wild", can't stop hear.

Sweet voice, great band. NPR is a treasure chest full of great music in a world dominated by mainstream pop.
Love it. No river is such a great track and I actually prefer this recording better than the original. Another great recording from tiny desk!
Both her and her voice are gorgeous. She makes this stuff look easy.
Not living under a "Rock" anymore - Love this sound...
I feel like I need this right now. Thanks Tiny Desk for soothing me once again. I wonder how I've never heard her before. Will definitely look more into her stuff.

This channel is pure Love!
Thank you so much for inviting awesome artists in a familliar place. I used to know just remixes of The xx or Daughter. To see them live performing made a dream come true.
So many more artists I didn't know, but have more talent and abilities than most of the charthits.
