I saw Medeski Martin & Wood so many times from about 1995-2005. The intensity and adventurousness they brought to every show put you in another dimension. They were too rocking for a lot of jazz fans, and too out there for some of the jam band scene fans. But those of us who liked that overlap got phenomenal concerts every time. We are only getting Medeski on the piano here, but he had a rig including a hammond organ, Wurlitzer, Rhodes, and a clavinet that he would smack like crazy. This was really great to watch someone seeing them for the first time. Well done!

It's fair for Michael to focus on Scofield here since he's a guitar player but it would be sweet to see him react to a MMW song. I saw them once on The Dropper tour and they remain one of the best live shows I've ever seen. I lament not having gone to more of their shows.

John Medeski is in my highest rankings for individual favorite musicians on their instrument alongside John Coltrane, Victor Wooten, and a lesser known drummer Dave LeBleau from The Mercury Program.

This trio has an absolutely incredible catalog and has played with many greats in different genres including jam and rock. Each is master talent no matter what band they play in.

As a complete jazz illiterate, I find Medeski one of the best. I can't understand how he gets it, but he has style and class, even when the setting seems surreal or weird. Take for examplewhat he can do with Ribot in that AMAZING album of cuban-inspired music, or the track "Between two worlds" in John Zorn's Nova Express. I get actual chills every time.

John Medeski and Billy Martin may be the most under-rated funky geniuses of our time. Chris Wood on bass is equally as talented.

I remember MMW doing an all acoustic set at the Roseland back in the day... around Combustication... These guys have a ton of jam band experience, and know how to take a solo "out" and bring it back... The PC set will bring it back right when it starts to feel uncomfortable, but let me tell ya, they can hang in discordant land for a while if they feel like it... They seem to be getting more balanced and mellow over time... Like an old dog is just chill. Scoffield has different tones... sometimes he gets that hollow body super hot, a normal human would just get feedback, but not in his hands. He likes the Mingus "wrong notes right" thing... Like he tries something outside the changes just to see how he recovers... and therin' finds his sound. I love your reaction to this stuff... You are putting yourself outside of your comfort zone to learn something new in front of us... I mean... This is the process... Always make yourself uncomfortable to learn more. There is no place I would rather be... the precipice... the breakthru.. of a wealth of knowledge, beauty and wisdom. Good stuff.😎

F-Diminished WH scale. That is core of the first “outside” lick he plays. This is one of the five principle scales used in jazz (Modes counted as a single scale). They are in order of importance the Major/Minor, Jazz Melodic Minor, Harmonic Minor, Diminished and Whole Tone.
However, there is a whole other way to that helped me understand it much better which is the Barry Harris 6th Diminished Scales which focused on harmony, especially “real jazz” or bop. There are 4 of these 6th Diminished Scales: The Major 6th Dim, Minor 6th Dim, Dominant 6th Dim, and Dom7 Flat-5 6th Diminished. With these you can also play the modes. Chris Pike does videos on this.

Ive had the pleasure of seeing Scofield twice. The second time was with Phil Lesh and Warren Haynes and he absolutely was ripping it up in that context! Hes known as an elite jazzman but he was doing some wild psychedelic stuff that left us scratching our heads at that show. One of the best to ever touch the instrument!

I worked at a restaurant in grade 9, in the late 90s. One of the chefs was a "loser" by reputation, but we b3came good friends. He was a bit older. He turned me on to mm&w, scolfield, modest mouse, pavement, sonic youth. He lent me hundreds of burned discs and I would listen all night long, all weekend long, all week long lol. Man, that was one of the best yrs of my life. That music totally changed me as a person in such a positive way.
Thank you so much Marty. I truly appreciate you sharing these tunes with me.

Sco is a wizard! And king of the guitar face lol. He mixes deep jazz knowledge and chops with a love of blues and funk like no one else. Such a unique sound and player. Though I admit I don't always love his guitar tone, sometimes I wish he'd dispense with the Rat, chorus and AC30s and just use a Fender Super or Twin with a touch of verb. Anyway A Go Go is a brilliant record, I need to check out the new stuff! The whole band is killing it! I usually hear Medeski playing way out on an organ and it's very cool to hear him playing more straight ahead on a piano. Fantastic stuff...
PS that lick at 8:08 is just jaw dropping, damn. And the left hand run at 13:52 is superhuman, Oscar Peterson level shit. Wow....

So.New to subscribing and Live how you approach every analysis. There is a very little known Soul/Funk/Jazz Guitarist that little know of. But I’ve been lucky enough to turn a lot of people on to him (he has sense passed) As a non-guitar player, I need someone like yourself to express your analysis of him. Just how good is he OR not.
His name is Ivan “Boogaloo Joe” Jones. The track is “You’ve got it bad girl”…once you get past the 1st minute or so intro, that’s when Jones the Drummer and Bass Player go on a 7 minute Non-Sop Groovy Burner…you can hear the sweat in the track.
He’s a virtual unknown in the reaction world. I hope you’ll take a listen to it and see if it’s something worth commenting on and maybe exposing to the unaware.
Either way, keep up the good work!

Robert Fripp on David Bowie’s Scary Monster album … Marc Ribot on Tom Waits songs … Sonny Sharrock … Tom Verlaine … Robert Quine… -Lots of guys who go off like that with dirty tones.

a go go was my high school wake up album i can still hear billy martins drum intro a go go and shank, jeep whole album is magic. I thought you had a lot of sounds like john regardless of your statement :) tone to stacatto and legato playing feel wise honestly. He plays so well with billy and I could tell you were a drummer when I first heard you the way you can groove. Glad you're going to see them chris wood has side project with brother thats folk music be right up your alley too. Mr medeski is one of one what a unique musical voice !!!! have a blast I know you will!!
John is unique although I hear pat martino in there which is high praise hes another monster of a man and guage strings gets overplayed a bit but hes another man who bends steel lol ...album "a go go" on a bose box or old bose 901's youre in heaven was that and david grisman quintet 3 disc box set for 1999 :) You'll see true masters billy martin is silk on a kit. Saw MMW dozens of times but with John 3-4 times there was little friction at first because John heard this monster band and used them on a go go but didnt get the cover credits read as John album. Thankfully that got resolved because these 4 are magic since MMW are fluid John could play all day over their sonics.

Ironically, John is 'Jazz' but Medeski, Martin and Wood is not (I know they are, but that's not their crowd). John just likes playing with them. I used to work security at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC and Medeski, Martin and Wood would play there a lot. They were sort of the end of the line going from The Grateful Dead to Phish to Medeski, Martin and Wood. Their shows were wild. I worked many shows where John Scofield played with them. You weren't allowed to smoke tobacco BUT you could smoke all the pot you could handle. Those shows were full of kids (in their 20's) with dreadlocks and Berkenstocks. LOL BUT, back then, Chris Wood was almost always playing a Double Bass, not an electric bass. Also John Medeski was always playing an entire fort of organs, electric pianos and MAYBE a piano. But their album 'Friday Afternoon in the Universe' convinced me that Billy Martin is one of the greatest drummers to ever walk the planet. Also, for Jazz, my cousin (who taught me a lot about playing guitar, played bass for Art Blakey) - it's all about the note you hold and not the notes in between. He taught me that there are no 'wrong notes'. And there are only 7 intervals (there are 12 notes) and they all 'pull' towards the notes of the chord you are playing over. So that 6th is just pulling towards either the Tonic or the Fifth, and so it doesn't matter. You could play a flat 2 if you wanted, so long as you follow it with a hold on the Root, you're gold. That's why people get thrown off the stage at Jazz jam sessions, they're playing out of a textbook and not going as far out of the box as they can.

13:25, they push the pentatonic scale by chromatic steps for a little, and go back after - sometimes several times, sometimes just once. Very "shape driven", even on piano. McCoy Tyner did it a lot, Coltrane, and of course the guitar players, as, this basic pentatonic approach is kinda "low hangin fruit" for us, right? :)

Sco is a beast, along with everyone in this band. 'Why waste time with a bunch of screwdrivers when you can just hit it with a sledgehammer'. LOL, I guess that's along the same lines as 'When all you have is a hammer, everything is a nail.' Your vids are very entertaining even if one is not trying to learn the guitar parts.

The F lick with the 6th interval is an Alt lick for sure. Hit the sharp 9, flat 13 flat 5. Then Chromatic enclose whatever he wants. So everything... Lol

@michael palmisano, you really should check out "Jp soars & the red hots, Bluesfest Eutin, 17.05.2014." where they play a song called Gypsy Woman. Absolutely fantastic minor blues! ❤️
