    Kitesurfing is all about finding that perfect, fleeting harmony between rider and nature. To push your limits further, tech tools like the Woo and Surfr offer valuable feedback and performance analysis. But in the battle for the best kitesurfing tracker, which device comes out on top? To help you pick, we've tested these rivals in a head-to-head battle covering session features, app experience, brand/community and accuracy/consistency.
    At SpaceX, we've been grappling with the question of which brand we prefer ever since Surfr came into existence. After spending several months in Cape Town, we decided to take matters into our own hands and determine which brand truly reigns supreme. Thanks to Surfr Pro accounts, we were able to measure altitude on our Apple Watches, and with the help of Woo, we obtained multiple devices to test the two brands against each other. In order to conduct a fair test, we were riding with two instruments from each brand simultaneously. Two Woo’s were mounted on the board while two Apple Watches were worn on the same arm. After numerous jumps, we arrived at a surprising result. Curious about our findings? Dive into the blog or watch the video to find out!
    Thanks to Woo and Surfr for providing us with their products to give us the ability to test them.
    Disclaimer: We, at SpaceX Kitesurfing, have conducted an independent research on WOO versus Surfr. We have informed both parties about this. WOO provided us with a WOO 4.0 and WOO Pro subscriptions, while Surfr provided us with Surfr Pro subscriptions and provided a videographer for accurate measurements. Our hours are unpaid, and this is our opinion.

    Woo outlier jumps ruin leaderboards, i think that is a big issue. Surfr has no extreme outliers, so you know you have a fair and realistic leaderboard.

    • @Jakkillah
      @Jakkillah 4 місяці тому

      Not true, ppl still get outlier big jumps on Surfr. I see that almost every day. I keep using both, deleting on Surfr if I get some nonsense. I feel like woo has gotten better in eliminating these a bit more. Surfr just gives you the option to delete the suspicious jump, but nobody does it really.

    • @tothgele
      @tothgele 4 місяці тому

      @@Jakkillah interesting, obviously what you just said does not mach with SpaceX’s test (to be fair they only did a handful of jumps) but my personal experience says otherwise too. I have over 7000 jumps recorded on surfr, of which i’d say only 5 are outliers (by 2-3 meters over reality).
      I’m not saying that there are no outliers on surfr, as you said there clearly are, but not nearly as much as on Woo. Achieving 100% consistency for EVERY SINGLE JUMP is pretty much impossible with today’s technology. But even then, Surfr is way ahead in fairness compared to Woo. I believe inconsistencies are caused by different devices and bad calibration, I am using the Apple Watch which is the device Surfr was developed on first, therefore is expected to be the most accurate and consistent. With this being said, at least there is an option to remove outlier(suspicious) jumps on Surfr. (I talked to a dev, they sometimes remove outliers FOR YOU if it interferes with the top of the leaderboard.) I get that most people don’t remove suspicious jumps for higher ranking, but that is the community’s fault for not being honest, not Surfr’s. The idea is there.

      @@tothgele ok, I just wanted to point out that such things happen on both platforms. My friend had an easy session last week with some maybe max 13m jumps and suddenly there was a 26m. Many more examples. But you are right these are not that common whereas on woo they are a bit more common. Many people think thanks to WOO though that they are better than they actually are. :) to end this, thanks to the spacex boys for the comparison.

    Would be really interesting, to see the comparison between different devices on surfr, as they all have different sensors it seems that woo should be more consistent here. Test of that would be great. Comparing, apple watch to Garmin, but even different phones like Android vs Apple.

    Thats a great video, thx for the work guys. Ill definitely go for surfr now. Please note that surfr just added an indicative height capability now, which allows you to go on the water just with your watch (garmin apple or wearos I believe) ; and I like that idea because taking my professional phone on the water would probably not be appreciated by my boss😂.
    Note that this indicative height is then post processed in the cloud to give you the real one, when you are home.
    Next video idea:
    Compare surf indicative and real. Recompare woo with more datapoints ! 2jumps is not enough but the methodology was very good and "quite cool" 😊

    Love the video. I have q woo and have also used the surfer app...but not with a board mount. Just a few notes. 1. The board mount for the surfer app looks great but it now adds the cost of a phone to the cost of a board if you lose your board. Rare but it happens. 2. User error but I forgot to close my waterproof phone case once. Luckily my phone survived. 3. You mounted your woos incorrectly and also what you do with your legs is going to matter for any board mounted device. Overall super interesting/great video. I use the woo more due to the community but...that looks like it is Changing

    Great test and good ideas to get accurate measurements. It would be cool to have someone from the technical side for an interview or explanation of some key points for the next video. The big issue is no with the device, but with the point of measurement and the analysation of the data. The sensor on the board has two main components, one gyro for orientation in space and one accelerometer for accelerations in space. It generates data points in quantified time intervals. Break down a jump into very small time intervals and you will see various sources of acceleration especially at the start or when woosting, which makes measurements inaccurate. The take-off for example when you are on the edge at maybe 80° towards the water, kicking off the water swinging the board behind you to maybe -60° in a miniscule amount of time while starting to travel sidewards and upwards. After that you -60° you raise your board in an additionally upwards accelerating movement towards the sky to 180°.
    Using the board is just a bad position for accurate measurements. Surfr did the rigth step to move the point of measurement towards the chest with the pouch or the wrist, which stays quite stable.

    Very interesting but a few points seem to be missing for a complete comparison:
    1- Woo is board mounted, so jump height is dependent on leg and body positions which can easily account for 1-2m variations compared with a wrist mounted sensor. A better comparison would have been between Woo and the Board mount version of surfr.
    2- You only tested consistency with Apple watches. A cross brand comparison (apple, android, Garmin) would have been fairer.
    3- You forgot to mention availability. Surfr. isnt quite available on Garmin (yet). It's only beta and for a few models.
    It would be great if you could do a follow up Surfr to Surfr comparing watches of different brands between them and vs board mount with Apple vs a couple of decent android phones.

      @spacexkitesurfing3634  4 місяці тому

      Hi David!
      1. We've tested in our jumps by either putting the watch up or kicking the board up and in both scenario's the Woo was measuring higher. Both devices also measure from the point they are attached to. The wrist for Surfr is the 0m point and the board for Woo is the 0m point.
      2. Agreed, We still want to review board mount to board mount for Surfr and Woo to measure that so that will still come. We chose to use both the watches in the consistency test because we think that using the watch is the best way to use Surfr.
      3. We also will try and test the Surfr across watch devices as soon as we get our hands on different models. Testing a Samsung vs Apple watch should be interesting. Still we now compares two of the same devices (apple watch ultra) and the two woo devices are also the same.

    Great video. I have been using a Woo 3.0 and more recently 4.0 for a while but then an erroneous jump data that was 4 metres higher than all the others I recorded that day has made me realise the inaccuracies (there's no way I jumped as high as it claims) and it also spoilt the feeling of accurately tracking progression as it set my new "PB record".
    Can I ask how you are storing your gopro camera when you are riding but not recording with it?

    Good work! Real clear findings. Hopefully if Woo make some changes to their algorithm to increase the accuracy, they'll pay for your trip to Capetown for you to repeat your tests 😁. Did you find any variations in height when performing board tricks? I tested a different watch based height system and things like one footers changed the height noticeably. The suggestion was to wear the device clipped to the harness to avoid this although that meant reading it wasn't so consistent. Did you notice similar issues with wrist worn devices? Might only be a problem below 10m though?

    Thanks for the tests, very interesting. I'm a beginner still and can only jump about ~4m high, so I can still roughly validate what surfr tells me while riding myself. And I've recently noticed inconsistencies, so after the session, I threw my phone into the air and listened. I also asked my kitebuddies at the beach, how high my throw was to reduce the guesstimation error a little bit and it was quite clear, surfr was completely wrong. For example I threw my phone ~3m high -> 6m jump, 6secs airtime...what? And then some tries around 5-6m high, one of which was estimated by surfr as 13.1m, which it quite clearly wasn't (would not throw my phone that high, even if I could).
    Maybe my phone (old Pixel 4) is damaged or something, but don't blindly trust even surfrs measurements. Still a good app that I like a lot though.

    Hey guys, really nice video and good testing but I think you missed one point that may have changed some results. You only tested the devices in conditions where you have big kickers but a lot of big air kiters kite 90% in flat water spots. There is a chance that the results regarding accuracy and which device measures higher in general change when you jump from flat water. So maybe make another test with only flat water and then take the average of both conditions to have a more meaningful result.

    Interesting vid and well done vid thanks👍Although it is not really a accurate vid if you are going to keep your legs down with the Woo everyone that Woosts dose it Even a lot of the pros i have seen chuck a tabletop on every jump which is going to add to the result on the Woo? Surfr stops that unless you ride with a board mount i guess but no one i ride with does that anyway it’s really considered bad form and desperate table-toping around where I kite, also Woo tends not to recognise a lot more jumps than the Surfr in my experience ie double lift or jumps that you dont accelerate on take off as much

    Thank you for sharing your feedback on the test. I agree with three of the points raised but not with the final one. I have been using both Woo and the Surfr App for two years, with the Surfr App also being used on my Apple Watch for the past year. Your comparison solely based on the Surfr App's performance on the Apple Watch does not seem valid to me. Different watches yield different results. I have used the Surfr App on a Garmin watch as well as in conjunction with the Apple Watch, and I noticed a significant difference in height measurements. In particular, measuring inverted jumps with the Surfr App has been problematic, often resulting in inaccurate readings. For world record comparisons, Woo is the only reliable measure in my opinion. I've had the Woo 4.0 for four months now without any issues; its wireless charging feature works excellently. My previous Woo device was replaced twice and broke after three months of intensive use. While I appreciate both systems, I personally favor Woo for its greater accuracy, thanks to its sensors, and its fairness.
    You claim your test is independent, but I noticed that the Surfr App is listed as a partner on your website, and you collaborate with them. This casts doubt on the expected impartiality of your test results.
    Our partnership
    At Spacex Kitesurfing, our partnership with the SURFR app goes beyond mere usage-we collaborate to drive innovation.
    Beyond competitions, SURFR empowers individual kitesurfers within our team. It allows us to track and celebrate personal progress, creating friendly battles and inspiring each other to reach new heights-quite literally! It's not just about competing; it's about self-improvement and pushing boundaries.
    During our hosted competitions, SURFR’s impact extends to our live streams. By integrating SURFR scores into our broadcasts, we offer spectators a front-row seat to the adrenaline-pumping action. Audiences witness the jumps and heights in real-time, enhancing the excitement and connection to the sport.

      Greater accuracy on the Woo? 😂 Please check all the "30+" footages from the Woo leaderboard and tell me if one of them managed to achieve this result WITHOUT the leg kick. I'm 100% convinced you can't find any. Woo leaderboard is full of outliers, inaccurate readings, people go out with as many as 5 Woo's not to miss any jumps and then upload the session with the highest reading, because this one is, of course, the most accurate.

    very nice testing but you made one major mistake... if the WOO isn´t mounted 100% in the center of the board (see instructions in manual) it wont give you correct numbers. thats why many measurements of WOO are so different. i got my WOO in the center... the WOO 3 as well as the WOO 4, both are very close to the surfr app (on mobile phone)... very often the WOO´s shows less hight than surfr... so i am very positive it´s all about the correct mounting of the WOO. therefore the surfr app is for sure the better thing and it won´t let people cheat on hight tue "optimized" mounting on boards. i tested it a lot now. today it was 17,0m on WOO 4 and 17,8 on surfr (iphone freshly calibratred)... past sessions mostly been higher on surfr too.

    One of the biggest problems with Woo are the jumps where the legs are pulled up. These are all far from reality (in my opinion +25% and more).
    I would be interested in a comparison of simple jumps vs. the „cloud stamp technique“.

    • @LenoBrahm-ng3ss
      @LenoBrahm-ng3ss 4 місяці тому

      In my opinion, even all jumps over 20m are far from reality, as the algorithm at Woo calculates the acceleration twice (see old interview with Woo CEO) and thus the measurement errors are caused by the legs being pulled up.
      In my opinion, Woo as a company has a real problem here that it can only solve with difficulty or not at all.

      So basically you confirm that the current Woo leaderboard makes no sense at all as most of these riders mount multiple devices are all over their boards, correct? Next to that, which Woo then shows the correct value? The one with the highest reading, or how does that work?

    • @xxdeniskaxx
      @xxdeniskaxx 3 місяці тому +2

      @@MHLmerrel 2 different problems: people not able to follow simple instructions or wanting to cheat - you can't prevent it from any device.. my point is that if you want to claim that a device is not accurate, you should at least adhere to mounting instructions... They imply that surfr with multiple mount options, tens of hw variations is more accurate than than woo with just one HW spec and one exact mounting point.. I sincerely doubt that.. it's just common sense. what I want to see how that apple watch on left hand compares to cheap adroid watch on right hand and to iphone on the chest and to android phone on the board.. willing to bet they'll get all sorts of random garbage as the results. a friend of mine uses surfr with a phone on the chest.. it skips half of the jumps under 5m.. and then tends to normalize all higher jumps regardless of the actual height...

    • @MHLmerrel
      @MHLmerrel 3 місяці тому +2

      @@xxdeniskaxx , apparently the hardware and the algorithm of one of these apps if far more reliable, I've tested both Surfr and Woo for like 50 sessions and came to the exact same conclusion as these guys. If your algorithm is not doing what it's supposed to be doing and it's allowing people to cheat you should fix it. Sticking with it will eventually work against you. The latest video on Instagram which was uploaded today shows exactly what's wrong with Woo, their algorithm and their leaderboard. We can say these World Records are made out of thin air as all of these big riders "cheat", and Woo allows them by not removing all their jumps. Absolutely ridiculous.

    HOWEVER. woo mount points are very specific and are not adhered to in the video with two mounts at each end of the board handle .. MEANWHIILE surfr on a wrist IS STILL ON THAT WRIST, it’s NO DUH that surfr in this way is “more accurate” and surfr on wrist next to surfr on wrist tracks closely
    - add to this very little jump data and you don’t actually have a complete data set
    note too, that the two woo sessions track IN LINE meaning their jump arcs are STILL relative to one another - this is important as it highlights once more that mount point on the board is to be adhered to if you’re looking to make woo to woo comparisons

    We did a lot of comparing with Woo en surfr. Surfr isn’t so friendly for starters. It never measures jumps under 2m and still misses a lot of jumps.. the difference of number of jumps is sometimes more than 10%. Even if we let out al the jumps under 3m.
    Also the height of jumps is questionable. I think the woo is reliable till 15m. above is maybe the surfr better but I never jump so high.
    The board kicking in the air is also a big difference. We think it’s a difference of at least 2 meters.
    I rather kite with the woo because you can kite and without a watch you can just see at the end how high it was. It’s making me nervous to see each jump. And the surfr was making me irritated because it didn’t measured some high (for me) jumps.
    Good luck with comparing and above all, stay safe and make fun on the water 🤙
