Space Mountain (Broken Down) With the Lights On

- For the first time ever, I was on Space Mountain when it broke down (at Disneyland in California). I had been waiting for this moment for years. Funniest part is at the beginning where everyone "OOOOOOOH"s at the lights coming up. We sat for a bit until the cast members manually launched our rocket, then we got to ride the remaining bit of coaster with the lights on.

Here's an old Space Mountain story for anyone who cares...I'm now a recently retired multi degreed Engineer with Lockheed Martin here in Orlando, but back in H.S. in '74/'75 I worked out at Magic Kingdom in custodial...anyway Space Mountain hadn't yet opened to the public but the engineers were testing it and there were times during our lunches that we could go ride it...and what is amazing is they had the speed at 55 mph during those tests (I understand the engineers tested it without live occupants at up to 62 mph), and also it was pitch black (these days the lights are marginally turned up so you can see some of the overhead beams, as a deterrent to standing up). As I understand it, the opening speed in '76 was 42 mph and has been lowered several times over the years...I believe it stands at about 28 mph now...so next time you ride it, try to imagine it at almost twice its speed, it was a hell of a ride, you came off thinking DAMN I SURVIVED...now let's do it again!!!
Steve Fowler That's so awesome. Thanks for sharing:)
@starlight...glad you enjoyed it...btw you peg the cute meter...
Steve Fowler dude I can only imagine it being TWICE as more jerky. But god that must of been fun as hell
This is what comments sections are for! :) Cool story!
that is hella scary to think about lol I have such a love/hate relationship with Space Mountain. I'm always afraid something is gonna come flying into my face T.T
I love how everyone went like "aaawwww!" And gasped so synchronized that it was almost as if they saw something of godly beauty XD haha
Reminds me of when I saw a trailer in the theater for the last "Expendables" movie. When Chuck Norris walked on screen the entire audience went "Ooooooh!" (True story bro)
Chuck Norris is not walking on stage. The stage, the theater, and the Earth below move together under the feet of Chuck Norris.
The engineering behind this ride is Insane
Fun fact that I learned that blew my mind is that there are 12 cars on the track at the same time! All continuously.
they are all on points in the ride where they can be stopped and shouldn't be able to collide into one another, or at least that's how the engineering works out. These guys know their stuff.
OMG! That sounds dangerous. Lol. :)
Interestingly enough, I saw an interview with one of Space Mountain's engineers, and he said on camera he wouldn't want to ride the thing. It seems a common sentiment among engineers; my uncle welds airplanes, and he doesn't like riding them either. When I asked him, he said anything weighing over 735,000 pounds was never meant to be in the air!
Compare the engineering on these rides to the ones done in some European countries, and yes, the engineering is superb.
Who knew that lights could turn on in space?!?!?!!!
lol
Richard Mays what god?
Lol
Ohh my, The earth must be flat!
You have seen stars, right?
When I first rode space mountain, I felt like I was going to hit my head on something. Now seeing the video with the lights on, makes me realize that the beams are so low!
Went on it in October of 2015 and didn't put my hands up because I thought they might hit something
+TuneBoy it's made so you can't touch anything though, it's just a feeling
Same I literally felt the need to duck my head.
+marls4life yeah there's always one beam I can kind of see that goes right next to me.
Me too! I told my husband that--I know it most likely wouldn't happen but I couldn't shake the feeling when I was on that ride!
Hell if they just left the lights on, they could EASILY sell this is a Return of the Jedi ride; it looks like the Death Star II in there!
good thing they have that star wars theme now lol
Hey if they ever decide to change space mountain, now they know what to use the old track for XD
They Renamed It Hyperspace Mountain For The Force Awakens Movie
Hyperspace Mountain felt faster than Space Mountain for some reason.
ShaqtinAFoolMVP They may have changed the speed slightly, when the ride first opened it was much faster so I would expect they could have tweaked it.
As interesting as it is to see SM lit up, it's even more interesting to see the professionalism of the CMs moving along the route and doing their thing. This is an excellent demonstration of why people feel so safe in Disney parks. The stuck guests, after an initial surprised "oooh," just looked around calmly with obvious interest and exchanged pleasantries with each other and the CMs who checked on their welfare before releasing each train. Nobody freaked out, nobody raised hell (as we all too often see on YT vids when things go wrong elsewhere). It was all quite good-natured. Not only is this exactly how you should run a theme park, it's exactly how you should act in one. Thanks, Briberry, for restoring some measure of my faith in humanity!
this was 9 years ago tho 🙃 apparently that's changed.
@@mayganphynix8267 The Current Year insanity is mainly confined to the C-suites in Commiefornia. I imagine that the park attractions, when they're actually working, are as safe as ever.
I rode Space Mountain at Disney World the day it opened in 1975. Stood in line for hours, but, managed to be the 25th rider on the first day. People don't realize, but, the ride has actually been slowed down over the years. It used too be much faster.
Diffrent trains lots of retracks
Ur old
I agree the one in FL was faster, it's actually had some neg G on the large drop. It's gone now. Must have trimmed it out. I don't know why with the insane neg G u get on modern coasters, this was the part we all waited for, and when I was younger, the part I most feared!
It went from being an average of 62 mph to 25mph
More train, more capacity, and safer is priority.
Getting to be on Space Mountain when it breaks down = Literally the best thing ever
This is my favorite ride that is so cool
It happened the SECOND time I ever rode on it. That was cool to see, but I was also grateful it wasn't my first ever experience on the ride as it would've ruined it for me.
explosivecookiez Keith you’re a pilot, you don’t need to go to DisneyLand to ride a spaceship when you have your own right here:)
I would still never raise my arms even then knowing how high the rails and beams were above me.
Ronny Franklin SAME
Ronny Franklin yea I know right
Ronny Franklin Yup fucking scared to death because of it.
Ronny Franklin I think someone died because they had their hands up before.
alot of thick steel pylons on that ride...
You said "Thank you"... That's so sweet! :)
That lady pushes the cars like a boss around 2:55
I work there and at Astro Orbiter and someone told me the same thing too lol
@@TrooperF There is no assist, the cars are unpowered. Still the friction is very low.
@@danielrose1392 No in the brake parte there are also motor driven wheels
WOW! That ride looks so BORING with the lights on. It's amazing what sensory depravation and imagination can do.
The only ride at Disneyland that I had break down when I was riding it was Splash Mountain. My brothers and I had gone on it and it stuck at some point for about 20 minutes or so (estimating). It was right before the beehive area and as my brother put it, "We sat there staring at a bear's ass for a while." Worst part was: we didn't get to go on the ride again with no wait.
I got to see what the buzz lightyear one looks like and actually got to walk through it, it was very cool the amount of engineering and how different it looks with the lights off
Yes the charm of space mountain is that it’s in the dark.
It's funny, in the light, Space Mountain looks like almost any other ride in an amusement park!
I love that you were all "thank you" and nice to the workers you're like a perfect guest
I love this. This is one of THE most unique things that can happen at Disneyland. It's a special thing all on its own, and I would be ecstatic if I was on the ride when this happened.
There should be a recurring event (like 4-5 days throughout the year) where there will be guided tours through the rollercoasters, and in between the tour it can be ridden with lights on.
Love this, we can't wait to come back and ride
Where are your likes after 6 years?!!?!???!?
This happened to us once. They asked everyone if they want to ride back or walk out. My friend said walk out because he wanted to see behind the scenes. Oh man did he. He recorded the entire walk and filmed what only employees get to see. We uploaded it to UA-cam but Disney asked us to take it down because it ruins the magic.
I love how patient and happy everyone is.
I've seen many of these videos and it's so amusing to see people being amazed by the whole structure. I haven't ever seen it with my own eyes, and it really is cool, it's just not many people realize how small the roller coaster structure is.
I dont know why I love this so much! I've seen over and over! I know I've seen this more than 100 times. Its still exciting to me!
I never put my hands up because of things like those beams that could easily rip my arms off
there is clearance for you arms
Gabzo Avro idk man. Have you ever ride that train roller coaster at Disney world? It feels very close to my head when we go in the tunnels.
ItsOrval Yea I always feel the same.
ItsOrval yes I know I've ridden many coasters around the world. It still has to have clearance because if not it can be super dangerous. Before the ride is started they have dummies that checked for clearance on all sides (non humans)
ItsOrval do you think they would have built it like that if they didn't know that?
I love everyone's reaction when the lights come on.
A very interesting look into the safety features of the ride. This happens when the computer suspects a stuck car or a sensor malfunction, or during a power outage. They only run as many cars as they have braking stations, so everything can stop if need be.
This breakdown was caused because the station backed up, which in roller coaster terms is called a cascade.
Back before 2019 if the trains backed up to block section 13 which was three blocks away from the unloading station the ride would shut down as a safety feature. It was very common before they upgraded their systems, now it doesn't happen as often.
@@Faithinator133 interesting, although I believe you are talking about the WDW version, as the DLR version got it’s software updated in 2005.
Oldest ride longest line...Wooooooooooo
Its not the oldest ride. This ride opened in 78, and there were many rides before that. Such as the Matterhorn, for starters.
Michael Ferro If Ric Flair says Space Mountain it is then it is (even if it isn't)
Sorry, didn't catch the Flair reference at first.
to be the man, you got to beat the man! wooooooooooo
Michael Ferro It's OK 👍.
*sees how close the tracks look to eachother*
why i never raise my hands on that ride.
CiEL Dusk yeah you may have your hand flying off
Blizzard Sklit Blue xXx Yup. I like my hands to much. I see other people do it though X'D I'm like "You are either a tourist or crazy."
All of the stairways make it look so trippy.
I love everyone's reaction when the lights came on!
the cars are really different from the florida ones...
Yah but I think the vehicles at this Disneyland is waayy better than the one at Florida. They have a very cool/neat design.
Daniel Diaz yeah and the ones at wdw only seat 6 people per car and theyre single seated.
apple_white_official It's better in the California one. The Matterhorn has the same style as Space Mountain in Florida though. I'm closer to Florida so I won't be going to the DisneyLand anytime soon. That will probably be the only time I'll ever be able to go unless I get rich or something :(
jinxlynx ive never been to California :( but ive been to wdw 6 times so i pretty much know my way around lol
It's sorta different. I know WDW by heart. I've been going every year since I was a few months old xD It feels like home there. When I went to DL it didn't feel as much at home.
Ever since I was a kid, i had an idea that it was very closed in and clustered inside. Now I see what it looks like with the lights on and it looks like the Enginering section from the new Star Trek Enterprise
I love how professional and calm the Cast Members are during this whole thing! This is why Disney is the best!
So did she tried again? Or she's good? I need to know
I know right
**is a cast member assigned to space mountain**
**ride breaks down**
"my tug of war days in middle school have finally become useful"
big idiot energy you’re the second person here to have Keith as a picture XD
Wait, so your not really flying?....Lame
Justi fied 😂
Justi fied you're lame
I appreciate the feedback, I'll make note of that.
Thinking Gary M has a little difficulty understanding a joke.
Justi fied hahaha good one!
Thanks for sharing this. It was truly amazing to see and good to know just how safe the rides really are! I came here from another video talking about all the breaking section on this ride and all the safety features.
1986, I was a teenager who lived near Disneyland. Some friends and I decided to go early one morning mid-week. We boarded Space Mountain and as we whipped around a curb, my eyeglasses flew off my head! I was very near-sighted so my friends had to lead me around by the arm for the rest of the day. I reported the loss of my glasses and they were mailed back in fine shape a week later. Still love that ride!
The main reason I go to Disneyland all the way from Australia is to go on Space Mountain! I had to wait in line for nearly 2 hours...but well worth it!
I remember seeing this when I was a kid, the car my mom and I were in got stuck on its side for a long while. I remember looking around in Awe seeing the skeletal structure of the ride while the music was stuck on repeat haha.
That is stunning! The architecture is gorgeous!
It was really cool seeing the teamwork involved in getting all the carts to the bottom. These people obviously know and care about what they're doing.
Well?! Did she want to try again?! Or is she good?!!!?
We went again. :)
WooHoo!
briberry I love that ride
That's cool I've always wounder what it looked like lit up.
Funny because it looks all new now, before the renovation you wouldn't want to ride it if you saw it with the lights on...=/ It's exactly the same design as it was before but different music.
cool! I haven't seen these tracks since back in 2004 when we were building them in the shop.
I was working for Amec Dynamic Structures back then and this was one of the several jobs for Disney Imagineering that we had done!
Something similar happened to me while I was on the Rockin' Roller Coaster in Florida and it was the best time of my life. I had always wanted that to happen to me. We even clapped when the cast members came to help us! Haha :)
Much more appealing then the WDW version w the lights on
The one in Florida is two separate tracks, where the one in California is only one. I have occasionally seen the lights on in Florida, when riding the people mover.
+Michael Ferro yesss!
That actually seems funner to have the lights on but that might just be me. xD
I agree. Its nice to see the inside for once!
PinBallReviewer I agree!
PinBallReviewer I think I'd rather have the lights off.
PinBallReviewer It'd be a very mellow ride.
Unh6d i k
I've ridden SM a couple of times and I always like behind the scenes type things. This has both. Thanks
Thank you for recording till the end, and for posting this. Very interesting.
I've been on this many times. The only reason it appears fast is lack of light. That heightens fear and adrenaline.
I went to Disneyland yesterday and we got stuck in the exact same spot you did! It was so cool to see the lights on!
o;
Zone 10
The thing looks sweet even with the lights on!
Finally something on youtube worth watching! Thanks for sharing!
I couldn't help but look at how long that employees hair was and think about her accidentally getting it caught in something
You've been waiting for this moment for years?
When I worked at the park, it became kind of a personal goal to see how many rides I get evacuated off of. Especially since I worked Fantasyland attractions for a number of years and saw evacs first hand almost every day.
Nice! glad you got to experience it then.. was it fun working at Fantasyland? I'm too chicken to ride on ANY kind of coaster..lol
I had a great time working there. I eventually moved on to a better paying job, but I still miss the atmosphere of the parks every now and then.
I know what you mean briberry. I used to work on Splash back in 2001. Yes, its not one of the best paying jobs, but the atmosphere makes it fun. I liked interacting with the guests, seeing the inside of the attractions. Most people would think that seeing the inside of the ride would ruin the magic. But it all depends on how you look at it. If you know what's real, and whats not, and can separate the two, it shouldn't matter.
That's SO AWESOME, thanks for sharing that !!!
I've always wanted to ride it with the lights on. Thanks for sharing.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I was on Indiana Jones in (Disneyland, CA) and the ride broke down. We were stuck for 40+ minutes on the ride, in our jeep car, not moving. Good thing we got stuck in a cool spot. Right near the bridge and fiery pit area. Naturally, we instantly grabbed our cameras and phones and starting taking pictures. Lol!
Haha that's awesome!
A few years ago my dad and I were on that and the ride broke down at the part where the wall paintings were shooting you with blow darts, and we were stuck there getting blasted with air for 15 min. Then it broke down again at the bowlder part
***** The air doesn't go off unless the ride is in operation.......
It breaks down ALL THE TIME.
I broke down on the bridge one time and we all had to get out and walk across the bridge. It was cool but a bit spooky!
5:00 minute mark to watch the actual ride!
life saver
gibbyh65 thanks
gibbyh65 iiiiiii
gibbyh65 I
Thanks for sharing this. It's been quite awhile since Ive ridden Space Mtn. Great memories :)
So so cool! Thanks for filming this!
I was on the Harry Potter ride at Universal and the ride stopped... right at the spider part in front of the huge fucking tarantula... nightmares.
That ride is awesome
Haha that happened to us (3 years later. But the exact same part wow)
to people who think Disney slowed Space Mountain down or they just have never been on the ride and it looks slow in the video, thats because the car was stopped by block brakes halfway through the ride. you go much faster when you start from the top and the brakes dont stop you on the way down. (obviously) hahahah
Thx for posting this. Found it really interesting.
Thank you so much for thinking to make this video! It was so nice to see you and others recognizing the breakdown as the rare opportunity it was :)
rugdg13 It does go upside down, but in the Paris version.
I gotta get there (I live in southern Germany, so it's doable by train). But it's so f###ing expensive. Even the train ride alone.
Did they give you anything for your troubles? Another youtuber broke down on California screamin and they gave everyone a free park hopper pass and bought every one dinner with a 30.00 meal credit.
That seems overly excessive, I would like to know the conditions of the break down. Was it for several hours? Because I've never heard of anyone getting $150+ park tickets plus a free meal for a typical ride breakdown. We were only stuck for a few minutes, and we just got to skip the line and ride again.
briberry Its on youtube, that ride breaks down in several diffrent videos, they had to walk off the roller coaster in the one where they got the meal.
Merchant Ivory Do you have a link to the video??
Wow, color me impressed then! I'm glad to see that they took care of you guys. I admit, I would be terrified to walk down from those heights!
It didn't seem that bad, but there were some who were terrified up there! The compensation seemed more than fair to our family.
Great Video!! Thank you for posting!!!!
I watched videos like this for 3 hrs since I'm going to disney soon
The ride starts at 5:00 :)
ABBY WAN KENOBIE VLOGS I love you thank you
ABBY WAN KENOBIE VLOGS Ok thanks
seram,
Puppiesworld 4896 thx
I was at Disneyland once on space mountain there the ride came to an abrupt stop come to find out it was the ride operator first day on the job and she accidently hit the emergency stop button
Last time I was at Disney, a year ago, we were riding the Tomorrowland Transit Authority and got to go through Space Mountain all lit up. The ride had closed for maintenance just after we got off of it, so we went to the TTA for something to do before we could go back on. By the time the TTA hit Space Mountain, they were just reopening, running through a few rockets without passengers to test it out. It's awesome that you get to see the whole interior like that as a behind-the-scenes look. By the time we got back through the line for Space Mountain, it was the usual pitch-black adventure I remembered.
Wow death chamber sounds creepy
***** DL doesn't have their People Mover anymore. That was definitely at WDW.
Awesome! Thanks for posting this :)
I was always wondering what would happen when if I put my hands up on this ride in the dark.
UA-cam gold.
P
this is so cool, thanks for posting.
I love the little "Ooooohhh!" when the lights go on. I'd do the same thing!
so, you go round three times then do a left and thats it? thats nuts.
Actually it broke down after we were more than halfway through the ride.
once i was at disneyland and we got stuck on idiana jones right at the beginning and we got to go again with no wait
Indiana Jones was closed when I went, I was really disappointed! I heard it was a fun ride.
Suzuki1776 6/7 year old me was absolutely terrified of this ride, the beetles on the walls made me lose my shit
Ty Lewis i used to duck down when the air darts shot over my head i used to freak the fuck out
i did a spindash when i saw the boulder.after that i vomited on tarsan's treehouse
I got stuck right before the big ball * drops* and they turned on the lights and it was still rolling
I love your channel thanks for uploading all your videos! :)
I always wanted to see what it looked liked with the lights on! I remember the last group of constant turns and rotations!
GREAT VIDEO! Thanks for Sharing!!! and with 1,883,905 Views, I see, that others were inquisitive about the inside of Space Mountain!
The girl at 2:53 has some serious strength.
It pushes its self but she just made it go off fasterf
yes this is in Cali Orlando use to have side by side seating till a accident happened and they made it a single rider instead...I love Disney I live in Orlando !
That's incredible. It's cool to see how big that ride is
I rode this for the 1st time 2 weeks ago with my fam. Always wondered how it looked with the lights ON. Thanks!
I think between 10 to 15 minutes. It wasn't that long of a wait.
Not a fan of coasters at all, but it's interesting to see this video anyway. Sounds like you all had massive fun in spite of a technical glitch.
This happened to me when I was on Space Mountain. Pretty cool seeing what it is like with the lights.
LOL, that looked like fun! It's cool to see how big that ride really is when all the lights are on.
The first time I went on this ride I was screaming like crazy it sounded like I was getting murdered
LOL
always feel like i'd hit my hand on a bar or something
I'm feel the same way when I go on the ride lol
I was on Splash Mountain once when it broke down. We were at the bottom of the part where you go up the hill right before the big drop. We were stuck there for 25 minutes and ended up missing the fireworks. We were at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and really wanted to see the firework show so we ended up going and talking to guest services and got to attend the Halloween Party the next night for free. I love Disney.
Woaaah this is crazy, I’m so intrigued
I think in the roughly ten times I've been to Disneyland, Space Mountain has been shut down about nine of them. It seems to be a really fickly functional ride.
Well you're very lucky. I've never been on space mountain with it breaking down. I want it to happen when I'm riding it though.
You just have shitty luck lol
In Oct 2013 we got stuck on the Haunted Mansion in the attic for about five minutes
most likely a handicapped person was boarding a doom buggy. Happens more often then not.
Noah Hellman You mean "than not". Yes, I am the grammar police.
One time when I was in that ride with my brother and got stuck at the part were you go down to the graveyard it was soo cold we were there for 12 minutes
***** It's not usually from the ride breaking down. Because of the nature of the Omnimover system, all cars are on one continuously moving track. If a guest needs to transfer on from a wheelchair, the cars come to a stop to allow the guest to get on more easily. The frequent but very short (5 min or less) stops are due to this reason. Mansion does not need to be updated. The Omnimover system is also a highly efficient and successful system that Disney has used in multiple attractions, the most recent of which (I believe) is Ariel's Undersea Adventure.
I got stuck for 2-3 hours next to a tombstone that jump scares you
idk why but feels kind eerie seeing it with the lights on....like one of lifes mysterys that never should be seen....
I waited in line for 2 hours and this is what I waited for
Maybe because I live in FL but Space Mountain is 100x better here ...
And when it breaks down it's that much cooler to see XD
Yea it is also much more secure than this one
In Paris the space mountain is 10 times cooler than in Florida. In Paris it is a Vekoma looping coaster. The outside of the Paris version is a lot nicer. And there is a launch!
I have to agree. In Paris you actually look like you're in space with the black light planets. In Florida it's just pitch black.
thank God they usually have the lights off, that ride looks pretty crappy with lights on
What I love about Space Mountain is the framework
Rapping around itself
Very cool, glad that you caught this on camera
