I love being able to see the structure; it lets you appreciate the engineering work that went into it. And the fact that a relatively simple, slow coaster can still scare the heck out of people is a testament to what a brilliant idea a coaster in the dark is
This ride seems to make good use of the space it has. Without the lights you wouldn't think it's so condensed, especially with the hectic visual and audio effects the ride usually employs.

This ride is rough. I remember getting off the ride once and hearing a guy go, "Feels like I just got beat up." I laughed at him then went back to the hotel clutching my bruised kidneys

@@Chipchase_Here I hated roller coasters before I rode Space Mountain in Disneyland Paris which was also my first coaster with inversions. Now I love coasters
I’ve only ridden this ride once- as a tiny child, in the dark. I kept thinking I was gonna hit my head. Seeing this video close to like 20 years later, I can still pinpoint the exact overpass areas that scared me shitless lol! I know Space Mountain is an incredibly safe ride, but damn that tight layout spooked me XD
This lights-on video points out how brilliant the special effects are in this ride. The designers were able to create a convincing outer space experience with nothing more than story, well placed lights, and minimal practical effects, and it's nothing short of astounding.
Think this video is impressive? Try experiencing it for yourself! This happened to me once when the ride was shutting down and it was AMAZING... Except for the 30min wait to get us out of our cart 😂
It's amazing how boring this ride is when the lights are on versus how exciting the ride is when the lights are off and full special effects lighting is turned on. The whole ride is the light show.
JustStache i believe the max speed you're going is in the low 30s mph. I think the real thrill are the sharp movements and, being a very early steel coaster, how rickety it all feels.
Got stuck in this ride when I was very little with my dad. Sat in the dark for 30 minutes, they turned the lights on and it was awesome to see. They let us run a second time as well after which was cool.
@@MidnightSonnet Precisely, the screaming for some may be fear, but I'd wager the folks that would be doing that mostly avoid roller coasters. The vast majority of the people screaming on the rides are doing it because it makes it more fun. Sort of like how sports matches are a lot more fun when you're cheering for a team, even if you legit do not care which one of them wins. Even cheering against a hated team works.
@@madisoncontroversial7348 Exactly why this to me has been the freakiest coaster of them all, not knowing what's ahead and also the thought always in my mind of what if a metal bar shook loose and is now hanging in the area where the coaster goes. As you say, with your imagination running wild, totally freaks me out every time.
I’ve had the pleasure of actually being on that ride WHILE it broke down. 😂😂 I was on the Omega side (the side rode in this video) and we actually broke down RIGHT before the first hill at 0:53. We were stuck there for about 10-15 minutes and when the lights came on it was amazing. We got to see so many carts on the Alpha side go past and we just kept waving at them. It was hilarious. We also loved waving at the People Mover whenever they’d pass. I’d like to think we created a core memory for so many people that day. 😂
But hey, it’s showing us what the track looks like in the light. That’s something you don’t usually get to see on space mountain unless the ride breaks down
Matthew Tyler should have also added, you also only get to see it like that on the people mover. Other than that, yeah. Wrong time to recommend the video.
Denis Kanos it’s rlly not. It’s just bc the lights are on lmao. And Disney is no six flags, it’s not just about the rides. It’s about the experience and seeing all the widely known princesses and fairy tales. It’s a little kids dream. Six flags is just another every day theme park. Disney, however, is not
It's funny how everyone thinks they're gonna hit their hands if they put them up on this ride but do you really think Disney would let the ride stay like that if that was a possibility?
I remember riding this coaster back in 1988 and it was completly dark in the ride, the only lights were strips along the track and I think that made the ride even more fun because you couldn't see what was coming up and it would suprise you no matter how many times you rode it. I wish they take it back to when it was like that since it would make the ride awesome to ride again.
It’s insane how much track they pack in there...there’s a reason there’s an obligatory “Keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times and please remain seated” safety blurb for roller coasters...especially this one.
pretty much all roller coasters are designed with well over an arms length of space. It just feels like less when you're flying through wood scaffolding at 70mph.
@@ToomanyFrancis Not on the sides and "arm's length" would depend on what they are using as a reference. How about making it for the word's tallest human being and accounting for him/her to be sitting down with his arms out?
I am tall and I always had the fear of losing part of my scalp so I would sit as low as possible and tilt head sideways. Some of those support structures look really close when the lights are on.
One of the most fun rides at Disney. I don't know why but the concept of a cart throwing me left and right without me knowing what's next always cracks me up 😂
This coaster is deceptively intense. Just rode for the first time in 15 years yesterday and was totally blindsided by the speed and all the quick turns. Great time!
@Jellyfnaf And Dino That's mostly because of how tight the turns are and how quickly it accelerates. Which is a helpful byproduct of needing to be contained within a building.
I think the darkness also adds intensity, not being able to see what's happening and just experiencing it through other sensations really does a number on your brain.
When u can see the scaffolding, & the track, etc, it just looks like a small roller-coaster inside of a building...or a big shed. Doesn't look Disney-like at all.
@@dme1016 , that's what separates Disney from other theme parks and roller coasters. Disney puts in the extra effects to hide the mechanisms behind the ride and make everything appear like something else. Their rides aren't the most extreme roller coasters out there, but the use of story telling makes an otherwise mediocre warehouse roller coaster into something fantastic.
Ben Jacobs I know right! XD it’s so cool with the lights on. Because one time that I went on the people over with mom and dad in 2009 we did saw Space Mountain with lights on. THIS IS SO COOL! XD
DuelWheeling C, it obviously shouldn’t be occurring, which is why it’s rare that people get footage - and out of the few pieces of footage on UA-cam, this is easily the best.
Here's a few tidbits of info about Space Mountain...Fyi, I'm a retired, in 2016, Engineer with Lockheed Martin here in Orlando but I just finished a two year stint (I resigned in February) in Security at WDW and I worked in Custodial at Magic Kingdom back in '74 - '75 my Sr. year in H.S. The current speed of Space Mountain is 28 MPH (Fyi, 7 Dwarfs Mine Train is 32 MPH), but back in '74/'75 when the ride hadn't yet opened the cast members were allowed free test rides during their lunch breaks...at that time the Engineers had the speed at 50 MPH...I heard at the time the engineers also did test runs at 55 and 60 mph. When the ride opened in '75 it was set at 42 mph and it was completely blacked out inside so the girders could not be seen at all. After a couple "incidents" the speed was lowered several times (down to 35 mph, then 32 mph and finally to today's 28 mph) and the lights were turned up several times so the girders can easily be seen (so as to hopefully keep people from trying to stand up). Needless to say a blacked out SM at 50 MPH was a hair raising ride that you felt lucky to have survived...the G forces I remember were pretty damn forceful.
I went to Space Mountain back in 1975 I was 12 years old and you're right the drama thing was pretty darn fast... 10 years ago I went with my kids and it seemed a hell of a lot slower thanks for the info
I actually rode Space Mountain with the lights on a few years ago. My science teacher hosted a (very expensive) trip to Florida to see Tampa, Disney World, WonderWorks Museum, etc. We got to ride Space Mountain with the lights on, then off. The best thing, we were there before the theme park had opened so there was no line. It was, needless to say, awesome
It amazes me how simple and non intense this layout really is yet with all effects running it become an extremely fun and thrilling experience. If you plopped this down at any theme park I feel it wouldn’t garner any queue due to it not being nearly as advanced as most modern coasters however, within its context at Disney I have no problem waiting an hour for this thing
I got to ride the People Mover right as Space Mountain had a glitch and the lights had to be turned on. I got to see the whole thing in person with the lights on!
Me and my mom waited in the gift shop next door to this ride for 2 hours waiting for my friends to go through because I was so scared!! I’m so mad I didn’t ride it!! That was 4 years ago 🥲
My mom wouldve usually gone easy on me if I turned into a chicken. But after an hour long wait, hell the fuck no 😂 She was not letting me pull that shit on her lol
And that other guy who commented funnier because Space Mountain was actually sponsored by FedEx, but this one doesn't really make any sense. Just being honest.
It's amazing what a nothing coaster it is. But, throw in sight deprivation and a glorified boardwalk coaster suddenly becomes multiples more exciting as a result of the combined sensory experience. Really a brilliant way of squeezing more bang out of the design buck. Same goes for Everest.

@@annadefranco You should ride Space Mountain in Disneyland Paris, it takes you to the bottom of a cannon and then shoots you up at 50mph. The one in Paris is much faster than any of the other Space Mountain's and it has 3 inversions, the only problem is the theming isn't as immersive or good as the other parks due to a 'bleugh' Star Wars skin, but this one is more of a thrill ride. It's cool standing outside of the mountain and looking at people get shot up the cannon aswell.
Kali B i wouldnt be surprised if they use it for short term storage for the holiday decorations before and after being taken to long term storage since it's so dark you cant see it anyways.
Shows you how good the imagineers are that they can theme this well enough to make what is basically a kid’s roller coaster feel like you’re zooming through space.
as a kid, I never wanted to raise my hands because in the dark it feels as if the frame is closer than it looks and you could critically hurt yourself going at that absurd speed
This rollercoaster was made in 1975... I don't understand why some are you are expecting some extravagant layout. Walt Disney isn't even about that roller coaster life anyway. He's all about the experience and space mountain does a great job at providing a memorable experience. Go to cedar point if you're looking for more.
Not true at all. Walt Disney helped change the roller coaster industry and was indeed a big supporter. He hired Arrow Dynamics to make the first ever steel coaster -- Matterhorn Bobsleds. And he personally purchased a rescuing stake in Arrow Dynamics when they were going under. Without Arrow, we don't have a lot of the innovations that we have today. He just lived in a different time, and died young. He died before roller coasters started doing what they do today. If he was alive today, who knows, he'd probably be a roller coaster enthusiast himself.
I believe you, my mom went on this ride when she was young. It's still pretty cool, and I found Disney World more of a place for younger people, but it does hold some pretty amazing rides for a more older audience. Had fun there, loved the attractions and entertainment. Experience was great even though I wished there were more extreme roller coasters/ rides.
Wow, it felt so fast and intense when I rode it! I had no clue the structures were so close together and that the beams were so close to the riders' heads, but I had the feeling the entire time that I was going to hit my head on something. Good to know my instincts were right, even in pitch-darkness! Crazy that the ride felt so much faster and intense just because I couldn't see what was coming.
at mnsshp this year they shut all the projections off and it was terrifying [but amazing] i've never ridden it with the lights on but it looks like it would feel like you could get your head knocked off
I still scream like a maniac on this ride and I've ridden it a million times. The darkness just adds so much fear...you can't tell what is coming next and you feel totally out of control. I love it!
Lights off…yeah, you can tell you’re dropping a bit and then zig-zagging your way down…then drop a little…rinse and repeat, but didn’t realize it was some big circles, a couple of figure eight type things, a few more little drops, more big circles, and a couple more figure eights. It seems a lot faster when riding in the dark, then this seems with lights on, but this is cool to see!
WOW!! I never realized how close you come to the ceiling and side walls!! I'm too busy "turtle-ing" my head during lights out to notice where in the building I am!! Great Lights-On video!!! Thank you!!
A few weeks ago, I was on Space Mountian, and put my hands up, because surely, the beams must be out of reach. Nope, got my hand smacked by a metal bar. Damn thing bruised me up pretty bad, too. Those warnings about keeping your arms down are no joke.
Don't worry about decapitation, they make sure any support is out of reach by any possible human being and they have tested that. If you could hit your hand or your head on anything on this ride, it would not be in operation. I'm pretty sure that the default clearance is ~8-9 ft for most rides.
I was on this (at Disneyland, not -world) when we suddenly stopped in a block section pretty high up. Then the lights came on and they announced that we were going to have to exit due to some issue. Sitting there looking at pretty much the whole track made me really appreciate theming and how it can add a lot to an otherwise mediocre ride.
@@mrgl338 Yeah. You ride in the dark with little fiber optic lights hanging down to look like stars. It's very trippy to not be able to see the track, because you really do get the sensation that you're just flying around. I figured Disneyworld would be the same.
reminds me of once the ride had to be shut down while i was about halfway through it so all the lights came on and we were escorted out, and realizing just how relatively small the space was (compared to how far it feels like we're going i mean) and seeing all the tracks layered around each other and being reminded that we were just in a large cement room the whole time was really strange. Space Mountain in the dark working as intended is fantastic at atmosphere. Space Mountain with the lights on looks like some dinky ass ride in an abandoned mall.
Yes. I rode with lights on once. I was crestfallen. That which terrified me as a child in the dark wasn't much more than the kid's dragon coaster at the local carnival.
This was probably a maintenance check ride before the park opened....they need to see clearly if there are any issues, and it's kinda hard to walk the track to check in some places.

Yep it’s not much with the lights on, but what a fantastic ride with the well placed theming, lights and sound track.
Wow, it's amazing how they made total darkness seem like outer space.......
Think this video is impressive? Try experiencing it for yourself! This happened to me once when the ride was shutting down and it was AMAZING... Except for the 30min wait to get us out of our cart 😂
to me this just looks like a straight up mess
I remember riding this in complete darkness. Not knowing what was coming next was the thrill.
Such a simple effect. Still holds up after 44 years!
It used to be much darker during a normal ride. Several years ago WDW changed it so there is a bit more light. Not as fun.
Sylvia S was the ride scarey?
I thought we went upside down in the ride 😂😂

It's amazing how boring this ride is when the lights are on versus how exciting the ride is when the lights are off and full special effects lighting is turned on. The whole ride is the light show.

this has to be one of the most thought out rides. so beautiful and thrilling, definitely my favorite at disney

It doesn't go very fast at all, actually. The visuals, wind effects and jagged movements make it seem like it.
JustStache i believe the max speed you're going is in the low 30s mph.
I think the real thrill are the sharp movements and, being a very early steel coaster, how rickety it all feels.
suited penguins there's also wind that they blow on your face
I was there last summer and was ok, but I go about three weeks ago and is insane!!! Way faster and they change it.
with the lights off you can't anticipate the turns so I think that also makes it feel faster

Got stuck in this ride when I was very little with my dad. Sat in the dark for 30 minutes, they turned the lights on and it was awesome to see. They let us run a second time as well after which was cool.
No kidding! My sister and my dad too!
Damn. The “dark” aspect makes such a huge difference in terms of the fear factor. I been screaming for nothing this whole time.
Screaming on coasters is fun, even if the ride isn't especially thrilling. :)
This is what traumatized me, wow, your imagination really runs wild in the dark 😂
@@MidnightSonnet Precisely, the screaming for some may be fear, but I'd wager the folks that would be doing that mostly avoid roller coasters. The vast majority of the people screaming on the rides are doing it because it makes it more fun.

That’s something you don’t usually get to see on space mountain unless the ride breaks down
Ricky Dupon good point
Matthew Tyler should have also added, you also only get to see it like that on the people mover. Other than that, yeah. Wrong time to recommend the video.
Matthew Tyler yep same with me

this not the same space mountain i went on when i was six i remember the drops being bigger so wtf😂🤭🙃
Yes It is it's a lame ride just like every other ride there, if you want rides go to six flags, if you want to be ripped of go to disney

Denis Kanos six flags isn’t that good tbh go to Busch gardens or ceder point is u want good rides

@@megank1691 yeah but that's because he broke the rules so it's his fault not Disney's fault
The Smiler: *insane laughing*
@@ToomanyFrancis Not on the sides and "arm's length" would depend on what they are using as a reference. How about making it for the word's tallest human being and accounting for him/her to be sitting down with his arms out?
@@wewhoareabouttodiesaluteyo9303 they actually have height restrictions on coasters where this would be a problem. They think of everything.

Great time!
Nice! I’m going to Disneyland again kinda soon, and I was just wondering if this ride has loops or not?
@@sponegbobspineappel it does not
@Jellyfnaf And Dino That's mostly because of how tight the turns are and how quickly it accelerates. Which is a helpful byproduct of needing to be contained within a building.
I think the darkness also adds intensity, not being able to see what's happening and just experiencing it through other sensations really does a number on your brain.
@@goawayleavemealone2880 exactly my thoughts. It definitely adds the element of “you never know what’s coming next”, which is always fun
It’s so much scarier and more ominous when the lights are off

RQ Productions1 Agreed!
You should try Hyperspace Mountain in Disneyland Paris. It's sort of a launch coaster with actual inversions AND Star Wars themed.
Yeah like being in bed with Melissa McCarthy.
Why are the lights even on? Hahaha
When u can see the scaffolding, & the track, etc, it just looks like a small roller-coaster inside of a building...or a big shed. Doesn't look Disney-like at all.
D Me that’s just the magic of Disney. The effects are magical
@PapaDragon Animation This looks like something on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, NJ.

Steve Fowler but it’s not propelled after the lift hill, how is this possible?
By turning off trim brakes
cool story bro, cant wait for the sequel
I went to Space Mountain back in 1975 I was 12 years old and you're right the drama thing was pretty darn fast... 10 years ago I went with my kids and it seemed a hell of a lot slower thanks for the info
Steve Fowler what do you mean “incident”
I actually rode Space Mountain with the lights on a few years ago. My science teacher hosted a (very expensive) trip to Florida to see Tampa, Disney World, WonderWorks Museum, etc. We got to ride Space Mountain with the lights on, then off. The best thing, we were there before the theme park had opened so there was no line. It was, needless to say, awesome
Wish I had a teacher like that
Cool story bro
Wish my science teacher was like that haha.
College?
With the lights on, it's a pretty lame roller coaster that wouldn't have lasted as long as it did if it weren't for the cool effects.
And if it can capture people's excitement to keep riding it for so long, then damn does it deserve it.
The anaheim track is more mediocre than this one, ci sidering its excessive use of right turns and thrusting brakes to control the speed of the car
Why were the lights on
You're right! This is basically a long version of a Wild Mouse ride with a lot more thought behind its presentation.
If that's what you want to call yourself then hello to you too.

It's amazing what a nothing coaster it is. But, throw in sight deprivation and a glorified boardwalk coaster suddenly becomes multiples more exciting as a result of the combined sensory experience. Really a brilliant way of squeezing more bang out of the design buck. Same goes for Everest.
Everest changes direction at one point, so it's not too terrible.
Well I mean Disney is geared towards families, so they can’t have too many super tall/fast/scary coasters
Space mountain isn’t really a fast ride, if I’m not mistaken the cars ride and test track are almost 2 times faster! (I think SM top speed is 27.5mph whilst the cars ride is 40mph & test track can reach 64.7mph!) What makes SM scary is how dark it is, causing unpredictability, how loud it is, how sharp the turns are, how bumpy of a ride it is & the seats! The one at DL is much smoother than this one and the DL car makes you feel MUCH safer! Kinda crazy how they managed to make this one of their “scariest” rides!! Work smarter, not harder!
The theming made it cost over 10 million so think again buddy
@@annadefranco You should ride Space Mountain in Disneyland Paris, it takes you to the bottom of a cannon and then shoots you up at 50mph. The one in Paris is much faster than any of the other Space Mountain's and it has 3 inversions, the only problem is the theming isn't as immersive or good as the other parks due to a 'bleugh' Star Wars skin, but this one is more of a thrill ride. It's cool standing outside of the mountain and looking at people get shot up the cannon aswell.

I’m the same way lol
I'm always worried about putting my hands up...and then losing my hands on this ride. Now I see how close we really are to the track above us.
So Disneyland, the lights are still off? only in Disney World lights are on?
@@mrgl338 Yeah. You ride in the dark with little fiber optic lights hanging down to look like stars. It's very trippy to not be able to see the track, because you really do get the sensation that you're just flying around. I figured Disneyworld would be the same.

I closed my eyes once on Space Mountain just to see if it was more thrilling. The ride was fine, but afterward my equilibrium was off.

This was probably a maintenance check ride before the park opened....they need to see clearly if there are any issues, and it's kinda hard to walk the track to check in some places.
Surprising how just making the lights turn off make the whole ride THAT more intense.
It's amazing how different a ride like Space Mountain can be with lights on. A thrilling ride through space becomes a very simple run if the mill roller coaster - no loops corscrews inversions.
