- In 1967, The Grossmont H.S. Marching Band won a national contest and was featured at the 1968 Miami Orange Bowl pregame, the UCLA vs. Syracuse Football Halftime at the LA Coliseum, and enjoyed a $5K reward and visit at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
What a great time that was! I played trumpet in the band. Yeah, the prop planes were fun.I sold enough fruit cakes, but I had never flown before so I wanted as much time in the air as I could get. I have to thank Mr. Nichols for all he did for me while I was in the band. Several years later, my daughters were on the drill team and I got to chaperon the band bus trips. Yep, Mr. Nichols was still there. He retired when my younger daughter was a junior. He was a good friend.
My father played trumpet also
Fun to watch, my brother Charlie Galloway played Clarinet! He was class of 1968.
Awesome video. I remember Mr. Nichols showing us this film back in 1978 in the band room.
It is great to read all your comments. I know how much all the students have meant to Dad all these years. It was pretty awesome for me to see all these great bands year after year growing up. This Disneyland event and the Miami Orange Bowl is what my dad was doing when I was born. LOL! This was one of my dad's proudest moments at GHS and I'm glad he was able to do this. You guys were awesome!!! All the bands throughout the years were awesome. You guys always worked so hard to be the best. I know many of your children have also been a part of the high school bands. What a great experience.
This Friday October 16, 2015 my Dad - Jim Nichols is one of the inductee's into the 95th Anniversary Hall Of Honor at Grossmont High School. My Dad is pretty excited about this and has been talking about it all year. smile emoticon I'm very happy for dad and proud of all of his accomplishments during his 29 years as Music Director at Grossmont High School. (See details below or go to www.foothillers.com).
During his tenure at Grossmont High School, Jim Nichols established an incredible legacy of excellence. The California State Legislature twice commended Jim for his superior bands, a result of Jim’s enthusiasm and dedication to instrumental music.
In 1967, Grossmont High’s Blue and Gold Marching Band won first place out of 281 bands from 40 states in a National Holiday Contest sponsored by Disney. The National Champion band, with a total of 208 students in the band, drill team, and flag corps, performed in 1968 in two shows at the Miami Orange Bowl: the Fireworks Pageant and the NFL Playoff game at the Orange Bowl. At the All-Western Band Review at Long Beach, the largest competitive parade in the West, the band won the Mayor’s Trophy in 1961.
During these years, the bands won 27 Parade and Field Show Sweepstakes, marched in the 1961 Rose Parade, the Hollywood Christmas Parade, 28 Mother Goose Parades. The bands were 11 times Corona, Chaffey, and Vista Tournament of Bands Sweepstakes winners. The GHS bands also appeared in 25 SD Charger halftime shows from 1968-1991 as well as 2 Pro-Bowls. The orchestra, concert and jazz bands received consistent superior ratings at yearly festivals.
In 1998, Jim Nichols was honored by the So. Cal. Band & Orch. Assn. with the Lifetime Gold Award and was the San Diego Youth Symphony’s, as well as San Diego County's, Music Educator of the Year for his lifetime commitment to instrumental music.
I was in the Hand Corp! What a wonderful experience!
My dad played in that band right there at that super bowl. he was one of the trumpets. I can't believe he played in the Super bowl 3 half time
I was there, too. Played trombone in the first rank. I remember the alligator farm as well as the motel where we stayed. Because I sold extra fruit cakes I was able to go with a small, overflow group on the "jet", but I hear the rest of the band had a better time on the charter plane. A vey memorable trip.
Mount Miguel here. Had friends at Grossmont. Immel vs Nichols.
I was in the '67 band. Video was done at San Diego State football colloseum. Trip to Miami not only took us to the Orange Bowl to play for the Rams-Browns playoff game,we also visited the Seaquarium and to the everglades to visit an Alligator farm plus other stuff. Including the flag corps, we went to Miami 240 strong
I get nostalgic just watching this. I remember Mr. Nichols showing this video the first year he started working for Sweetwater Union HS district I believe it was back in '95 or '96. He resurrected the music program in the school and also started the Mariachi Agua Dulce. I owe Mr. Nichols so much and just want to thank him for being such a great teacher. Thank you so much Mr. James and Mrs. Eileen Nichols.
I also was a band member (clarinet). Like Wayne I was fortunate enough to have sold plenty of fruit cakes to fly on the jet. I don't recall the alligator farm but remember a side trip up Ft. Lauderdale and Biscayne Bay. Miami Beach was a lot warmer and shallower than found in San Diego. Kristyn is right, we taped it at the old Aztec Bowl before they filled it in for Viejas Arena. Same place we did the band jamboree earlier that year (sold those tix too). Mr. Nichols was a great influence on me and I still reminisce playing Concerto in B Flat, Shostakovich, Festive Overture, Tchaikovsky,as well as some stuff in jazz band. We also had a nice trip to Las Vegas the previous year, played before some music educators and saw Juliet Prowse at Caesar's Palace in Sweet Charity. Good memories.
6 years before my time but Jim Nichols would pull out the 16mm projector and show this great film every year at the beginning of marching season. He was very proud of this...and should have been! Thanks for digitizing!
The Royal Blue Regiment has certainly changed over the years. What an awesome view into the past! Proud to say I marched with GHS.
Clarification: Our video submision to be judged for the contest was done at San Diego State
I'm in the 9 grade 2014-2015 and I'm proud to play sax for this band. Ij do have to I like my uniform better than these
How was y’all’s band so big the ghs 2020 class has like 15 kids
Grossmont had a huge area to serve. Many of the high schools were not built yet. We were huge too at Mount Miguel in the seventies.
