I always thought the Dark Engine had some of the best movement mechanics in gaming; it was so smooth, and when you actually had the balls to start sprinting past things in Thief 1 and 2, it felt properly ninja. It always felt like your character (and this applied to System Shock 2 as well) was running on tiptoes.
Absolutely agreed. The movement has such a good range to it; it feels weightly and down-to-earth as you start out and then picks up incredible momuentum as you get more comfortable. Speaking of ninjas it sort of reminds me of N++ in an odd way (not as extreme obviously but the same general *feel*). Thief's level design plays into this perfectly: it's very much a game about tiptoeing around guards as you explore, rather than a game about solving the same old "guards in a room moves in a circle" stealth puzzle that we usually see in this genre over and over again.
@@Walter-Montalvo Conversely, Unreal engine has very video gamey type movement. You fly up stairs and inclines at the same speed as a flat surface. It works for games like Unreal and Unreal Tournament, but doesn't exactly feel natural.
What a very interesting run. A classic game I used to love to play, and this to me is the best kind of run--one that teaches me all kinds of facts about the game and its engine that I never knew. Excellent work as always, my dudes.
thank you SO MUCH for running this GDQ and Psych0sis! This is so entertaining! I'm just getting into this game recently and i'm loving it! First stealth game
I used to play this game when I was 11 back in 2000 and my friend and I always thought you suddenly died because someone snuck up behind you and hit you undetected. Takes me back.
The heart attack bug! I think it's similar to the fling, but it happens when you touch too many surfaces at the same time and it instantly flings you into one at deadly speed.
Funny story: I was planning on watching this live but I ended up missing it because I didn't check the updated time after earlier speedruns sped up the shcedule (speedrunners be fast y'all). Thief is one of my all time favorites and it's so cool to have had this at GDQ. Hope to see it and its proper sequel make a return sometime!
19:50 this jump saved me. I skipped the lever required for the drawbridge in this level by jumping over the gap, but I was unable to make the jump back to escape the city. So I was happy to find this alternative that skips all of that... took me way more tries than him to make it though!
“Thief 2014 is a bad game”. Unfortunately yes. The producers could have made it awesome but it felt linear and the movement felt like if you were a camera on a dolly
at first im like wow he's gona do every level in 33 minutes? then when I saw the exploits of using the walls and bugs to just fly out of the world and end I was like ...oh so basically a sneaky way of doing it lol
I think in Thief: The Dark Project the Return to the Cathedral level can be beaten way easier. You just need to put any object next to the main gates in order to block it. It won`t work in Thief Gold as the level designers increased the weight of the gates, but in TDP you can just leave through the very same gates.
In "Return to the cathedral" you could also keep the front door open, and escape the way you came in, by picking up a skull at the start and dropping it to block the front door. Do this when the door is open at the start. Then when the cathedral locks you in, the door can't swing closed and lock - and you are free to wander back out the front door. The quest to help the hammerite ghost at the cathedral is one the best parts of the game though, so you should only skip this to save time.
In this video, TDP is "broken" in the sense that professional gamers in 2018 are willing to demonstrate well-known cram-through tricks -- IMHO a *monumentally soulless* way to play _any_ game. In an attempt to limit a run-and-gun style of gameplay, a year later, Looking Glass Studios removed many of these tricks from the updated version of TDP - "Thief Gold." FYI - as a modder of this game, I consciously left a few quick-play opportunities in my levels and used these to send 'quick-players' to their doom. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE play a 'Keeper of the Prophecies' (Thief 2 Mod) so I can watch you get your asses kicked in the penultimate mission. FYI2 - SS2 was developed by Irrational Games. They used a modified version of the Dark Engine, but SS2 was produced by a separate set of developers.
After forcing my way to the conclusion of this video, I will say that watching a 'speed-run' of Thief is like watching someone hacking a sandwich together using a sacred Samurai sword -- a valid playing style (since you can play any way you want), but all the same, utterly horrifying to watch.
As one of the top runners of Thief Gold, Challenge accepted. I will tell you how I get on. Also, very few things seen in this video are fixed in thief gold. Most tricks are still fully doable. Newdark (the fan patch) fixes most of them though (with some new tricks added of course). Newdark is also a separate category entirely.
As I already replied, we are free to play a game any way we want, and I would never say that speed-running is wrong. But considering the story-depth of TDP, follow-ons, and many mods, this is truly is the most soulless video I have ever watched. Feel free to meat-grinder the KotP playing experience. That is also your choice.
To call this soulless is a little ridiculous lol. I've played the game casually numerous times and just playing it this way was interesting. Do you not enjoy seeing how broken a game can get? There's no need to attack people who do. Also, the comment about Gold is almost entirely wrong, as everything shown here can be done quite easily with no extra effort needed, since its the same exact engine. Thief 2 put a speed limit cap on it, so maybe you were thinking of that? And SS2 was co-developed along with LGS, so there's that.
I am not attacking you. Sheesh. I am making a value-judgement about a game-playing style that you are perfectly free to pursue and promote. But no, I do not 'enjoy seeing how broken a game can get,' anymore than I would enjoy watching a broken TV, or enjoy reading a broken book.
Runner introduction starts at 00:50. Run starts at 1:30.
ALRIGHT SOUNDS GOOD

agree except I wish it had just a little air strafing control
I couldn’t have said it better. I don’t know of any engine that is close to what the dark engine had, including unreal engine

I really wish some mad lad made another game in this lovely engine.
It takes me hours to beat one level normally and this man walks up saying "death abuse" and is flying through levels lol.

Wow they're absolutely killing it in the OldDark engine. I'd like to see them run System Shock 2 like that as well
The game that changed my life. Thanks for doing this.

Best stealth game ever made... not that'd you see much of that here though.
oh no, i concur!
he's in and out before they know what's up... doesn't get much stealthier than that ;)
Theif 2 is the best ever made. Taffer.

Or joker?
Like, taffer boy, are you taffing me
All in all, it's such a funny-sounding word
A masterpiece of a game and a really fun and interesting run. Pretty underrated speedrunning game, the engine allows for a lot of fun tricks.
YEEEES finally one of my all time favorite games have been waiting for this to appear on gdq since I first played it
Love Thief! All time fav game!
But you have a Deus Ex avatar :P
Heads up, JC! ^ ^
This was literally my first PC game. Always played it together with my sister when I was like 10 years old. Still playing it at least once a year.
Good job assaulting that man.
Great game and great runner, thanks
I really need to go back and finish this game one day, I just love the atmosphere

I grew up on this game. Watching this was both slightly infuriating XD and a massive treat. NICE run!!!
Most underrated game of all time!
I know this game so well... or, I thought I did! Amazing job, Psych0sis!
that game is a masterpiece!
Love this game. You can jump in a rhythm to continually increase your speed, and if you hit a wall going to fast, you'll die from fall damage.
Finally! Been waiting for this...

First 2 Thief games are treasures!

I remember playing this game when I was younger. Never got past the tutorialbecause my computer sucked.
Does he play thief 2 too? Would be Great to See that to in Future Summer games runs
The force of a thousand Suns huh???
you used shorter time on the whole game than i used on the first mission as a kid when i first played the game

3:30 Isn't there a lever at the front as well anyway?
Wasn't there a mage guild level? And a sewer level?
that runner reminds me of jim sterling
I'M BANE!
of your run
Why is the game so dark, is it just me?
if it had too much light it would be impossible to win - enemies would see you all time.
because shadows are one of the core stealth mechanics
Lmao, the dude pronouncing Psychosis name Psycho-sis. wtf.
