    In this video, I grow Flamulina velutipes (Enoki Mushrooms) in reusable plastic bottles. You can do the exact same process to grow oyster mushrooms in bottles, or any other species (except Shiitake).
    The process is simple.
    1. Fill a reusable bottle with substrate.
    2. Bore a small hole in the middle.
    3. Sterilize at 15 PSI for 90 Minutes.
    4. Inoculate, colonize and fruit.
    Growing mushrooms in bottles is more environmentally friendly than growing in bags- because there is less waste. But the real advantage is for larger farms and the ability to mechanize the process.
    You are likely to get better yields and better process flows by just growing in bags.

      If you buy cooking jar sauces and big jars of olives and pickles they could be more eco friendly and easier way of cleaning them out. The thing with plastic as I'd worry over time about the chemicals in the plastic getting into the soil perhaps 🤔

      I feel exactly the same. I’ve successfully done a vegie garden and everyone is talking about how easy mushrooms are but I’m way over my head at the moment. Looks like I’m gonna have to build a science lab. I had no idea

    • @CampingforCool41
      @CampingforCool41 2 роки тому +2

      @@NpgSymboL you should look into wine cap mushrooms. If you’ve got a veggie garden you can set aside a little space for a bed of straw or wood chips and toss some sawdust spawn in. Much easier than these indoor growing processes. If you mulch with straw or woodchips in your garden or under fruit trees already to suppress weeds then you don’t even have to set up a special bed for wine caps, you can just have them growing among everything else.

I want to grow mushrooms for just myself but the grow blocks produce way too much for a single person and I would like to have different kinds of mushrooms available to use at the same time. I love mushrooms! watching these videos are making me hungry! I want to grow my own because the local Asian food stores are often out of the varieties I like, like oyster and enoki. It's easy to get dried shiitaki to keep conveniently in the pantry, but I want Oyster mushrooms with everything! I'm finally gonna try to grow my own since my awesome neighbor has a source of food grade buckets being recycled to give me. Now with this video, I think I also want to try to grow enoki since they are my second favorite and I love them in Miso Soup and hearty Nabe soup dishes! THank you so much for these videos.

    Yo bro. The reason why you can't get tall fruits is because you micro climate was not big enough Hence why the sleeves on the bottle worked better because it's a "bigger" micro climate. With your grow bags leave the plastic taller so your fruiting bodies will grow taller because to the mycellium it's basically like trying to grow over the hight of grass. Most mushrooms only spread the cap or become 100% mature once they get their cap above their micro climate where the mycellium recognizes it to be.

    • @tentacleGodhead
      @tentacleGodhead 5 років тому +55

      Meemerz Gaming It's because you want to prevent other fungi from colonizing your growth environment! The air we normally breathe often has a variety of fungal spores, and they can easily sit unnoticed in our food, the air that we breathe, anything really. When you're growing mushrooms, you're creating the perfect environment for them and any other unwanted fungi.

    • @tentacleGodhead
      @tentacleGodhead 5 років тому +41

      Meemerz Gaming So basically, yes, you might end up growing a different type of mushroom that you don't want! It's not bacteria you're worried about, its common mold.

    Question: what do you think the results would be with bottles that were half the height of the ones you're using here?
    Also, why colonize the entire bottle if the top is only part fruiting? Or would you clean out the bottle and gather more from the sides?

    • @Metqa
      @Metqa 4 роки тому

      This is just a guess, but cotton is organic. It used to be alive. Mushroom(fungus) are decomposers. They break down organic things. If you use cotton, it could likely be "eaten up" during the process. Polyfil is from an inorganic compound and so it will be more resistant to decomposition.
      I used to tutor my friends son in science lessons and we talked a lot about worms, bugs, mold and fungus and how they help recycle organic compounds locked into higher order life ,like plants and dead animals, so that they can be recycled and used again by roots of plants that will eventually be eaten by animals, etc. The circle of life and all that...He liked the GRIM stuff a lot, LOL

      Yes, you could just use glass cups as well.
      You also don't necessarily need a pressure cooker if you can't afford one, you can can just microwave your prepared substrate in order to sterilize it before inoculation.
      I don't know about the hole thing he did, but I think its perfectly fine to have a mycelium cake all the way through. Once that's done, you can shake those cakes out into a plastic box with some poorly cut out holes at the top and sides lol , and mist them daily. shrooms will start to grow once the cakes are out of the darkness.
      Good Luck.
      Trash a cake once you see signs of ANY contamination, don't take that risk.

    • @mobilisq
      @mobilisq 5 років тому +1

      @@timtim9o5 microwaving the sub would dry it out, though, which is why steam sterilizing is done. you can use a tall pot instead of a pressure cooker, but would need to add water to the bottom occasionally. also the sub shown in this vid isn't right for grass eating mushrooms

    • @timtim9o5
      @timtim9o5 5 років тому +2

      @@mobilisq Nope, just saturate your vermiculite substrate, and nuke it.
      You should also cover it whilst doing this, but either way, microwaving it will not dry it all out and even in that, just....add boiled water after nuking the substrate ???
      The point is just to make sure its a sterilized environment. That can most easily be achieved with a microwave as any microorganisms in the substrate are killed by the radiation. The vermiculite has good water retention regardless of the evaporation.

    • @theGreaterAwareness
      @theGreaterAwareness 5 років тому

      Of course it will work. The only thing that is a factor is the substrate. Primordia have just as much medicinal value as the fully developed mushroom and so you will want to have a container that allows you to access the primordia without bruising them. That is why glass jars with a wider top than bottom is ideal. Take the lid off and all slides out.

I just have a strong feeling one day I might run out of food and not be able to eat much at all, which will probably make my health decline so I just want to learn how to access food that won’t cost way way too much.
