  • One of the most beautiful (and poisonous) amphibians in the world, we find and catch a wild fire belly newt to learn about their potent toxins, ecological niche, and conservation in today's episode of The Wild Report!
    Searching for wildlife in Japan has been one of the most amazing experiences of my career as a conservation biologist, allowing me to experience a completely different landscape, new species, and different land management practices than I'm used to. While the internet is full of information about Japan's culture and urban tourism, my goal with this series is to bring you up close and personal with the wild landscapes and organisms of this incredible island nation. In this episode of our Wild Japan series, we go on a mission to find the rare fire belly newt!

    If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I have years of zoology experience under my belt. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
    Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

    Fantastic episode, Ben! Loved the coloration. I had two fire-bellied toads as classroom "pets". Blaze and Betty Croaker. Amazing creatures who kept the children in awe. Both toads help teach the children empathy and respect for all animals. Yes, even the poisonous ones. Looking forward to the next episode.

      Thank you! The coloration is remarkable, definitely the brightest colored amphibian I've ever seen. I'm sure your students love seeing them every day.

    Nice video. That forest looked so peaceful so glad that those placees exist for our animal freinds.

    Hey Ben! I just moved to Raleigh, NC from Michigan and went fishing today, discovered my first NC snake, a Northern Watersnake. I wasn't brave enough to grab him yet cause I couldn't 100% ID him, but man I love snakes and searching for amphibians. I could do it for hours. I keep watching your videos and learning so much. I can't wait to go out there and discover more snakes to appreciate. Beautiful creatures. Learned what "herping" is today. I've instinctively searched for frogs and reptiles my whole life, was cool to see there's a verb for that lol just subscribed. Keep up the great work and congrats on your pursuit at NC state. They are lucky to have you. - Chad F.

    I've read about the tree frog's process of laying egg masses, but how awesome it must be to see that in person. I imagine catching a fire belly newt has to be on par with seeing a coral snake in Arizona. Congrats on your acceptance into the Master's program, I have no doubt that you will excel.

      Yeah I remember reading about it in reptile books as a kid, it was crazy to see it in real life. It was definitely an unforgettable experience, but I don't know if anything is gonna top that Arizona night. Thanks dude, as long as I still have time to herp I think it will be a good time haha

    Another fantastic installment in what is quickly becoming my favorite series on your channel. Japanese fire-bellied newts are legendary for salamander lovers, and I am so happy that you got to see so many of them and actually get to catch one too! Absolutely stunning animal, as always you did a great job with the edit and gave a lot of cool information in a very approachable way. Nice work!

    Not the Japanese Giant that I had guessed but this Fire Belly is certainly equally as cool. I'm not even going to guess on the snake species that is next, other than it is not a Coachwhip.

    The eggs & larvae aren’t poisonous “yet” so everything can eat them???

    Are these salamanders toxic when eaten by predictors?

    • @TheWildReportOfficial
      @TheWildReportOfficial  10 місяців тому

      Yes, they can kill predators that don't have some kind of toxin reduction mechanism!
