In this segment of On Location, Coyote and the Brave Wilderness crew explore the mountain lakes off the coast of Washington for Rough Skinned Newts!
Similar to the California Newts found in previous episodes these adorable little amphibians also happen to be EXTREMELY toxic. That’s right, the poison in the skin of the “Rough Skinned” Newt is potent enough to be fatal to humans. However no need to worry, the toxins must be ingested to take full effect, so as long as you’re not planning on eating one of these toxic creatures you’ll be just fine.
Get ready to see one super toxic Newt!
HUGE THANKS to Doe Bay Resort for housing the crew and making this video possible! Please visit their website for information on how to visit Orcas Island - bit.ly/OLdoebay
Thank you for joining us On Location! In these segments you will get a behind the scenes look at all of the fun and exciting things Coyote and team experience on their adventures when they’re NOT encountering wildlife…or at least not by choice!
The Brave Wilderness Channel is your one stop connection to a wild world of adventure and amazing up close animal encounters!
Follow along with adventurer and animal expert Coyote Peterson and his crew as they lead you on three exciting expedition series - Breaking Trail, Dragon Tails and Coyote’s Backyard - featuring everything from Grizzly Bears and Crocodiles to Rattlesnakes and Tarantulas…each episode offers an opportunity to learn something new.

I live in Lewis County, WA... Back in the late 70's/early 80's, a camper visiting our town died after drinking coffee made with water he had gotten from the pond. Poor guy didn't realize he had scooped up a Rough-Bellied Newt along with his water. :(

I actually live in Washington, and you can find these guys everywhere in ponds or migrating across the road. I kept two of them as pets a few years ago (they're safe to handle as long as you wash your hands and don't have any cuts) and they laid eggs in their aquarium. When I released them in the fall there was a bunch of newt larvae in there with them.

Used to catch so many of these as a kid. Several years ago I came across literally thousands when a local lake was really low.

I grew up with a California newt as my first pet. (I was like six or seven, and my parents should probably not have allowed this, but she lived a long, happy newt life and I managed not to get poisoned.) They're the slightly larger and more relaxed cousins of taricha granulosa. Still highly toxic, but they're shockingly friendly and will happily walk across your hands and quickly learn to take worms from your fingers.
Now I live in washington and the rough-skinned newts surprised me when I first saw them in the wild and discovered they were so small and skittish compared to what I was used to. Still pretty adorable, though.

You should do an episode where you film mark catching something. Like so coyote can see

Aww! That takes me back to my childhood. We used to catch them all the time in the river in oregon where we went swimming. Called them "water doggys" though. Caught dozens of them. We always let them go and then scrubbed our hands!

I like the catch Coyote! And I recently saw your baby fox video and it reminded me of the fox I saw in my bcakyard about a week ago.
