Just so you know that is called a wardian case. Back in victorian era these were invented to cater to the largely growing popularity in exotic plants from tropical zones. In order to make the trip home over the salty ocean via ship they needed to have something to safekeep it while also providing the necessary humidity. I believe these are the first time someone made a terrarium.
Personally I would have used some black silicone to waterproof the bottom. Quick easy and lasts much longer than a plastic sheet. It also would be moveable. Great build love love
Yes I thought about that, but I wanted to create a terrestrial terrarium where the newt would spend 6-8 months and then the semi aquatic build is coming 😎
Yo! How's the little guy holding up? I just stumbled across you, and you're the first person(I've seen to date) to use a case like that. I've always thought they could make really neat terrariums, was just never brave enough to do anything with them lol How's the reindeer moss doing? (White fluffy moss) I've kept some before and it lasted a while, but eventually got too much light and died went bad, (that was on me woops), so I wanted to know if yours was still doing good, and how good? It looks awesome! Love the terrarium, it's very inspiring, and I might just make one myself if I see one now ;)
He’s flourishing, growing fast, might need to upgrade him in the next 6 months 😎. I try and be as creative as I can and make fun and really unique environments while maintaining a natural stimulus as best I can. The moss is doing well, it’s all about either indirect lighting, putting it in areas of the terrarium where it gets shade and good amounts of humidity. And thanks! Enjoy your build!
the bowl with the rocks makes a nice puddle and came out better than i expected, but that container was begging for a waterfall feature man. if you get another one that would be legit
Not required really, but still good to provide, natural sunlight is best source, but if you have a tank then a bulb is fine. With the small terrariums that I make, I place them areas where they will get natural sunlight but not direct. The adults are kept in tanks that get led lighting for the plants and uvb for them.
The idea was to create a really safe environment for the newt (plenty to climb and hide in) the moss also retains Humidity and cooler environments. With regards to feeding, EFTS generally are avid eaters, all I need to do is get the tweezers in there and they leap for the worms. But thats a good point if you want to ensure they are all eating.

So glad I'm not the only one who waits a long time and thinks through builds first for ages 😂
Nice build and super cute newt , only thing I would have done differently is run silicone around the bottom and up the edge to make it water tight

6:12 theres a massive slug that was in the plant you put in haha
I don't understand why you put plastic in the bottom and didn't just seal it properly with fish safe caulking?

Hey I’m getting a newt can you please give me some advice
Start really basic, if it’s a EFT (baby newt), a really basic enclosure with land, a dish of water, and plenty to hide in.
thanks i really aperciate it
@@MaxtheGROT
this is awesome!
Such a cool vid!
Terrarium so nice
You dont add springtails to the setup? They clean up from the Isopods...
I do if I have any on hand, they are not readily available here so need to collect them 😎
Thank you for clarifying that :)@@MaxtheGROT
Your dog looks like my dog
Very cool. Do they need uvb lights? I know nothing of reptiles and amphibians lol

What did you use for the substrate? And was it from Bunnings or miter 10? Also very good looking setup 🤞🏻😁
Charcoal and sand mix with soil on top….mitre 10
@@MaxtheGROT yo thanks!! :))
E-F-T 😂
Is it from Mitre Ten???
I’m looking forward for an update.
Nice vid
what part of nz are you? and what do they eat?
Newts eat worms, Fruit flies and once aquatic, bloodworms
thanks ggod to know@@MaxtheGROT
Can someone tell me how that animal gonna breath there??
Plenty of ventilation in this terrarium, the sides have ventilation streams
You can make it a birdcage
beautifull terrarium but using this kind of moss will make it dificult to find the newts for feeding time. and they are already dificult feeding.

Should’ve used silicone at the bottom
How many gallons is that?
