Nothing worth eating in Singapore, all the food are made from inferior produce that are not fresh which makes the food taste bad. Absolutely nothing there tastes good. That’s why the suicide rate in Singapore is the highest in South East Asia, and depression is the highest in entire Asia.
The reason why it's called carrot cake is because radish is called "luo bo" (萝卜) in Mandarin. It's given a nickname " 白萝卜" which directly translates as "bai luo bo" aka white radish. Carrot (胡萝卜), is called "hu luo bo". Since both foods have the words "luo bo", this dish is given the name "carrot cake" since it's shaped like a small cake. White carrot cake refers to plain flavor and black carrot cake which uses dark sweet sauce as a flavor booster. Hope this helps!
Hi Ken, glad you are explore singapore food. You need to stir before you drink that bandung water. Its a evaporated milk not a condense milk. You go to Geylang Serai Hawker center. There you can find Malay Authentic food. Many food stall all are delicious. Then you must Singapore best Nasi Padang Hajah Maimmunah Nasi Padang. Then if you are at Arab Street , try Singapore Murtabak.
Chicken rice..... U missed the chilli.....and if the rice is normal, it is not chicken rice. 😅 Normally, the rice is cooked with the chicken broth........full of flavour
Man, I used to visit East Coast Hawker centre daily, during the days I lived in Siglap in Singapore. Always loved the place, the ambience, bit like a beach feel hangout. But that was in the 2004-2008 era, it has massively changed since then. Singapore and Malaysia always battle for the honour of having the best (street)food, but to me it shouldn’t be compared, each has its own distinctive flavours and dishes. But I do love the Nasi Padang from Singapore and when comparing, their Murtabak is so much nice than here in Malaysia. 😅
It's starch - in the egg omelette. And the carrot cake is actually white radish - they call it white carrot hence carrot cake. The chicken rice, the secret is a good rice (cooked in chicken fat) and the chilli sauce with it.
BBQ pits at East Coast Park need to be booked in advance with a small fee. Need to clean after you finished. Carrot cake is made with grated radish, flour, water, steam and mould into a paste.
The steamed chicken rice is also called Hainan Chicken Rice. It's a must for me when I'm in Singapore. You should also get a bowl of soup with it. Wonder why they haven't given you one. Can't wait to taste it again next February.
Your friend looks a lot like WWE wrestler Sami Zayn. He looks just as lovely and humble as you! Singaporean food is a mixture of food from various Asian countries, but it has evolved into something that tastes nothing like the original, haha! All Asian snacks made of flour or rice are called cakes in English, whether they are sweet or salty, which is really strange! You did a really great job, thanks a lot for sharing! Take care! Happy travels! 👍🥰🙏
I’m an Australian born in Singapore and I came across your travelogs when I was researching on train travel from Thailand. This video reminds me of the food I missed so much. You were right to get food from East Coast Lagoon cos it’s one of the best food haven in Singapore.
For the bandung, u actually have to stir it yourself because the condensed milk is at the bottom. It’s a mix of rose syrup & milk, making it look pink.
Like to see your your trips to many countries in the world. You have so many interesting experiences and also bring lot of story about each country to your subscribers. Thanks much to share it
The sticky substance in the prawn omelette is a mixture of rice n tapioca flour. Rice flour to give it a bit of crispiness n the tapioca flour to make it starchy or sticky.
Hi Ken, wlcme to Singapore…🌹🌹The fried ‘carrot’cake you ate earlier is not carrot but radish as u mentioned..In Chinese we call it white ‘carrot’as it’s shape resembles the orange carrot.. Wishing u a pleasant n gastromatical experience..Cherrio.. Mark… Ps Been following your interesting vlogs ..👏👏
In Singapore Hawker centres you can order at any stall and sit anywhere you like. So if there is music at the satay stall, just take the food to a quieter area.
Hi Ken, Glad to know that you are trying Singapore Street Food. People mistakenly took the carrot cake to have carrot in it, but actually it is not. Carrot Cake is actually a dish that contains White Radish or Daikon in general
All of the food looked delicious...I would be especially keen to try the "split" dish that was supposed to contain carrots, it all looked very tasty. Carrot cake (as we know it in the states) is much like the one you're familiar with. It's one of my favorites and I can still taste my grandma's carrot cake, it was the best.
That (prawn) omelette has a jelly-like texture due to the starch flour. You'll have to book the BBQ pits in advance. Carrot and reddish are actually same word in Chinese "luo bo" - carrot is "hong (red) luo bo", reddish is "bai (white) luo bo", hence translation became carrot cake. And most local food made from flour into a thick solid form is called cake. 😅
Hi Ken😊🙋♀️ Actually in SG(Singapura/Singapore) there is Malay Village also known as Geylang, ChinaTown and Little India known as Tekka. And also Arab Street famous with their food named Murtabak. These four places is filled with individual cultures, religions and also traditional foods. I hope one day u come back SG and visit these places too. And kampong houses is exist in SG until today at Kampong Lorong Buangkok😊 And u can even go to St. John Island and Kusu Island too besides Sentosa Island that u had visited. SG Zoological Garden is interesting too. Enjoy your trips around the world ok! Special thanks for sharing your journey in so many countries which i myself have not visited yet even i am living in SG who live nearby Asean countries. And hope one day i will be able to visit all Asean countries too. Have a safe journey around the world and take care Ken!👍💕
It’s such a joy watching you trying out all our local dishes. Love your accent, observations and friendliness. Chicken rice should NOT be just rice. A properly cooked chicken rice is so good that you can eat it on its own. Coupled with chilli sauce, minced ginger and thick soya sauce, it’s heavenly! Hope that you are able to find a better chicken rice.
Singapore is famous for Hainanese Chicken Rice. That's great that you enjoy the boiled chicken. Most non-Asian people I know find this style of chicken weird, because the skin isn't brown from roasting/frying like they're used to. Char Kway Teow is traditionally made of the thick rice noodles. But even in Malaysia, you can sometimes request it made with other kinds of noodles.
Maxwell hawker centre (use the TEL mrt to get there), the chicken rice is very good n other food as well, Chinatown complex hawker centre (chinatown mrt) which you have been there, have lots of nice food, another is hong lim hawker centre (chinatown) mrt also has lots of nice food but these 2 places, avoid 12 pm to 1.30 pm cos super crowded another of my favourite hawker centre is great world city (use TEL mrt) lots of delicious food. Your video is very well produced n you are so kind n gracious to the people there n you keep Singapore clean 👍👍👍
The carrot cakes are actually made from radish and mixed with rice flour. The white carrot cakes are savoury while the black it’s sweet. Singaporean usually eat this for breakfast
Must try probably made in SG dishes: Indian: Sup Tulang Merah or Bone Steak (mutton leg & bone marrow) Malay: Mee Siam Kuah (with gravy) Chinese: Chili Crab & Punggol Mee Goreng
awww man. I stay 5 minutes away from east coast lagoon but, I havent been there in ages! It's sooo much better than newton! next time try Sambal Stingray from a chinese store, BBQ chicken wings, other varieties of malay food liks Roti John, etc.
Normally, you find a table and seats, there are numbers on the tables, remember the number on your table. Then you choose your food and tell them which table you're at; the food will be served to you at your table. East Coast Lagoon is usually very busy at night.
The carrot cake does not contain that orange colour kind of carrot, but the white colour portion that you were eating were made from white radish. White radish in cantonese also known and call as 'white carrot', thus the white portion was made from the white radish itself. Likewise white radish soup is another dish in singapore whereby elderly believed that it is good to drink for easing some heatiness stuff. 20:40 the carrot* is actually the white little small cubes you see in the egg its called carrot cake* but since it looks like it was mushed thereforce alot of people dont know why its called carrot* cake. radish is also called white carrot in chinese characters that is probably why it has carrot in the name.
Thanks for reminding of the hot weather unlike UK. I'm visiting Singapore and Malaysia soon. Oh yeah, where's my light umbrella now. Last time I stay near the Sultan mosque and walked all the way to Marina Bay Sand after jetlag ie slept until 6pm. Got to create 3 days itineraries now. Arriving early morning, thinking of starting with the Botanical Gardens. I gather there a free Tourist Bus? Any suggestions for 3 days in Singapore. Thanks
Ken, why didn’t you get the chilli sauce. & black sauce ? You need to dip the chicken into both. Soup should be provided. This stall does not sell authentic chicken rice.
Reason why it's not so authentic is because the chicken must be poached. Also, the Chinese hawkers does a overall better version using sesame oil added with chicken fats to cook the rice. The chilli sauce must have ginger, garlic added too.
Fried Carrot cake in Mandarin is called cai tou guo. It is actually made of radish. In Mandarin, radish is called bai luo bo which literally translated to white carrot. Chinese word for carrot is hong luo bo which literally translate to red carrot. So long time ago, due to Singaporean regular folk's limited command of English, it is probably mistranslated to carrot rather than radish, so they just call it carrot cake in english till today. Why is it called a cake is more complicated. In chinese food, many snacks that is made with rice or has a component of rice or glutinous rice tends to be called guo in mandarin but in the local chinese dialect group such as teochew and hokkien, it is called Kuih or Kueh. Here in Singapore and Malaysia, kueh is also used by the Malay people to refer to sweet or savoury desserts and sometimes it includes snacks that looks like cake but in handy size or bite size. As time goes, due to lost in translation, it resulted in Radish "Kueh" being called Carrot cake.
love to follow you. I live in Bangkok for 20 years now, originally from Denmark. Try the Chili crab in Jumbo Seafood at the east coast location. Nice sea area with a quiet park. but order the table the day before...its yummi. have a nice time.

Singapore Murtabak is different compared to the one which you've experienced while in KL. It is thicker and full of mutton or chicken . The restaurant is just outside the Bugis MRT stn near the Sultan Mosque. You can explore Kampung Glam area for a wider choice of foods which is not far from this restaurant

banyak sekali makanan dari saos kacang di Indonesia dari sate Madura, soto sokaraja, siomay, batagor, gado gado, pecel, ketoprak, cilok, rujak dan masih banyak lg
I didn’t know GiGi and Michael are back in Singapore. Good to see you and Michael together. I am told the food in Singapore is as good as you will get anywhere in the world. You mentioned something about Australia in the video, have you been here? I would like to know where you have been down under. Have a great stay in Singapore Ken.
21:16 "Chai Tow Kway". Breaking it down, "Chai Tow" is actually a Dialect in Chinese meaning "Carrot". And as many has commented, there are 2 carrots in chinese. Red (your usual carrot) and White (Raddish). "Kway" or "Kueh" is Malay for cake. If you google "Malay Kueh", you will see the shapes and sizes of these "Kueh / Kway". Not the usual cakes people are used to. And voila, you get the name "Chai Tow Kway".
Fried carrot cake in Singapore is rather white mashed radish mixed with rice starch to make into cake. Then cut into small pieces n fried savoury style.
Wow, i haven't been there since they renovated... What a surprise.... I have no idea Dodo Explorers were staying in Singapore for quite a while.....Hmm..., Food , food and more yummy food..... Still hope you are experiencing more in Singapore this time round, Ken.... Cheers mate!
Hi Ken, I would suggest you check out Mark Weins' and Mike Chen's videos on what to eat around Singapore and many other countries before you go exploring street food. They are pretty good with their choices of food cause that's their full time job ofcourse....food vloggers.
you need to stir the drink first bro... because they are rose syrup underneath that's why it is so sweet. Malaysia & Singapore it the same you have to stir first before you drink.
The asian carrot cake is made with white carrot/radish, shredded, mixed with tapioca and rice flour, and seasoning. The mixture is then steamed to form a solid, and it will be cut into smaller pirces to be fried with lots of eggs and garnish with springly onions.
@@vhalia I’m taking about those in the hawker center, home make are different my mothers recipe is similar too but also have fry prawn and mushrooms added. And we also steamed it like dimsam.
Carrot cake is literally translated from the chinese name. Chinese called the radish "white carrot". You need the chili sauce with the chicken rice to make it complete lol. "Steamed" chicken is in actual fact poached. The rice if cooked properly would actually even be the highlight as they will cook it in the chicken stock that was poaching the chicken. Perhaps that stall was a little on the bland side.
