- I found the 10 worst lightaber duels in Star Wars, and ranked them in this video right here. This was duels such as Obi-Wan vs Darth Vader, Kylo Ren vs Rey, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Count Dooku, and Mace Windu vs. Palpatine.

I saw a meme addressing how three Jedi masters died so quickly to Sidious and it said: “To be fair, I would probably be shocked if your space president suddenly was a dark wizard, pulls out a laser sword, screeches and does a 920 from a prone position covering at least 12 feet”.

Sidious described as being almost a dark blur that's how fast he was moving and used a force screech that fears his opponents and makes them open to attack.

The duel between Sidious and Windu had to be one of the most impressive (and if you find footage of the choreography training, you'll see it). Moreover, in the novelization of Episode 3, their battle is described as a fight between two monsters. 3 other masters (including Kit Fisto) died so quickly because Palpatine is SO strong.
According to official canon, Sidious, Yoda, and Windu are the three most powerful swordsmen in the franchise. Anakin (healthy) comes 4th after them. Dooku 5th.

The reason why Sidious didn’t look as powerful as the other fights is bc Windu uses the lightsaber form Vapaad which draws on the darkside energy of the opponent which sidious never faced before the form also allowed Mace to get stronger as the duel went on also sidious sensed anakin coming so he made the illusion that he was weak and defenseless at the end to persuade anakin

Ok but the qui-gon vs darth maul one was supposed to leave the audience (and the Jedi) wondering how powerful darth maul really was, (which is why he held back a little and the camera angles avoided him)

It’s sad that the lightsabers nowadays look better than ever before but the duels in which they take place in are very underwhelming (and that might even be an understatement)
I agree to some extent, but honestly, lightsabers look too big to me know. Like, now that they have actual lightsaber props, I feel like I can see the outline of the actual plastic blade that they just cgi over

to me the animated battles dont look good, because they made the lightsaber trails too large. You cant actually see any of the fighting as its just a triangular mess
For the Windu/palps fight, if you search it up their is a deleted scene with a different choreography that is simply incredible. Sidious and windu are actual beasts and kit fisto does not look like a fool

Sidious vs Windu is a big crime because they had a stunt double for Ian McDarmid but instead Lucas told him literally 3 days in advance to do the duel himself. So you have a 60 year old, clasically trained actor, who didn't even have time to practice doing a supposedly epic duel with the second strongest Jedi of the order. The deleted scenes duel is much better and Sidious( the stunt double) moved so fast that he nuked the Jedi with the speed of light. It was almost as fast as Anakin vs Obi-wan where the actors trained for months.
Bro, Mace Windu vs Sidious is one of the better duels in all Star Wars, we can see how powerfull Sidious is in the Clone Wars show, and he being defeated by a Jedi, that's surprising and epic.

For the Kenobi scene, I think Kenobi's desperation makes sense. In the 10 years since ROTS, he's fallen apart. He's been given this mission to protect Luke Skywalker, connect with his old master through the Force, and is barely making due to keep himself alive. On top of that, he's been living with terrible guilt, not only for Order 66, but also for the Jedi he didn't save in Part I (which, I know that wasn't the first time that's happened), and for striking down his padawan and best friend years earlier. A Jedi's power comes from having a clear mind and a solid connection to the force, and Obi-Wan hasn't had either for the past decade. On top of this, he learns in the previous episode that Anakin is in fact alive- he failed to strike down his padawan too. His friend is still alive, and is a tortured, angry soul. Obi feels that anger through the Force in their first meeting, and an already torn apart mind is torn apart further, struggling with guilt, fear, anger- struggling against the dark side of the Force both mentally and physically. As for Darth Vader, we all know he likes to play with his food.
The fight from Kenobi was actually good. Vader doing wild swings was very Vader like and Obi being weak works well for his character

Honestly, Luke fighting Kylo Ren telepathically made sense. If he had actually been there, I would have the same problem as the recent Ahsoka vs Baylon fight in the Ahsoka show, being “why don’t the people standing right behind them just shoot him?”

@@cod73 Eh, I feel like it was a good way to go out. Everyone says all the original main characters die in pointless ways, but that’s really only true for Han, and that was the point, to display how far gone Kylo truly is.
I just thought it was bullsh*t that Luke can project himself to another planet lol. It blows my mind even more than the force healing shinanigans.
But I guess it's cool. I don't particularly hate that part of the movie.

Honestly Obi-Wan vs Vader is not bad. I saw a comment once that explained why it was kinda slow and weird. Basically, Obi-Wan's style is already highly defensive, and Vader was being abnormally slow in his attacks, which could be because the last time Vader was aggressive in a fight with Obi-Wan, he lost 3 limbs and nearly burned to death. Honestly I feel like Vader and Obi-Wan both knew that it would be his last fight ever, so they kinda just had a simple fight.
The real-world explanation is fairly straightforward. First of all the lightsabres were originally conceived as heavy, slow weapons like broadswords so that's how they were choreographed. Second, David Prouse talked up his sword fighting experience. Third, the first props were very fragile and shattered easily. They consisted of a spinning mirror along the length of the blade to scatter the light from a really bright spotlight and create reflections. The extra light was removed in post-production. They were finicky and also now you're trying to have a swordfight with a wooden pole attached to the end of a drill. The usable shots were also limited because at certain angles the glow effect disappeared and then you could see that was a little pole. They had better ones for TESB and ROTJ so could go for proper mid-blade contact. Fourth, Alec Guinness was a 63 year-old alcoholic who didn't really want to be there. Fifth reason, my personal speculation, is that they didn't know how it would look on big screen with big glowing blades, and how it would be received by the audience. Real martial arts is faster and involves smaller movements on screen but is deliberately slowed down so the audience can follow it.
I honestly thought both grew old and fighted slow
I wish in new Ahsoka show they would bring Ray Park so it will look awesome like Qui Gon and Obi vs Maul

1:53 i heard that these old lightsabers where made with a rotating metal bar covered in reflective tape of different colors, this tape was the same material the government uses to make "Stop" signs reflect light. So what they did was put a light source close to the camera, pointing to the tape, to make it shine
#10 is likely the only good example of stormtroopers being terrifying other than the og trilogy
First of probably a couple comments: Finn USED TO BE a janitor. He was a fully fledged stormtrooper that trained with the others in multiple forms of melee combat and range weapons. Finn was very skilled, but very anxious after he basically realized that all the troopers were brainwashed murderers. He even trained alongside TR8R, and considering that he had good skills with multiple melee weapons, it would make sense that he could at least pick up a lightsaber and swing it to some level for proficiency
fine, but I don't think a janitor can last more than 10 seconds against a sith. Also, that plot armor where Finn is literally sliced by Kylo but come out completely alright is terrible
I put Vader vs Ben Kenobi in my top 10, mainly bc how iconic it is and when my dad showed me it for the first time I was in awe. Me and him love this movie and that’s why it’s in my top 10, also first duel between Dooku vs Anakin and Obi-Wan looks amazing and also highlights how good Dooku is and his lightsaber form 2 is designed for dueling and has beaten Mace Windu in a sparing match when Dooku was a Jedi. When u look into it, Dooku winning against a young brash Anakin and Obiwan who’s form 3 is still in development, the more the fight makes sense. It’s okay if u don’t agree, I understand
Well I do understand why you put ben vs Vader in your top 10 it's iconic. But it didn't age well it's still very iconic just not very good. The SC38 reimagining is way better like if A New Hope were made today that's how the fight would be and would definitely be my top 10 favorite fights in Star Wars. I was blown away when I first saw it

In my opinion, Finn Vs FN-2199, Anakin/Obi-Wan VS Dooku, and Finn Vs Kylo Ren have been on this list. It could be replaced with Ben Vs Knights of Ren, Rey Vs Kylo Ren on Kijimi, and Mandalorian Vs Kaba Baiz.

Bro it wasn't just that Obi-Wan had gone 10 years without using a lightsaber, it was that seeing Vader for the first time since he got his suit, and in the manner he did (including watching him brutally murder innocent townspeople), he was struck by fear, as were many throughout Vader's reign. The shock and horror he must have felt seeing his former padawan in that state is unfathomable.
Blocking a light saber with the force was actually the coolest part of all the saber battles in the new movies
Honestly, the Force can be used to stop a lightsaber right. Basically just showing domination in the Force. However, Force adepts have a natural Force shield (some weaker than others) which is why Obi-Wan gets tossed around.
The force stop thing would have been cool if it was not freezing it but actually making a force shield. (Cere vs Vader or statele Shan vs Malgus)
Tbh I really like the Finn vs stormtrooper fight, it shows the lack of experience that Finn has when compared to the stormtrooper. Finn probably got a tiny amount of melee training in some form but yeah. The fight is choreographed well for the characters involved I thought.

I believe that the reason [of course the lore accurate one] for Darth Vader vs Obi-Wan Duel (the original one) being so slow was because Vader feared Obi Wan (which had kind of sense before Kenobi's series) and Obi-Wan didn't even meant to kill him.
I think that the Mace vs. Sidious fight leaves out the fact that Ian McDiarmid didn’t realise he’d be fighting the day before the scene was shot, hence why it feels off. He had literally zero training with swords.
Rey had a bow staff so it would transfer to a single blade poorly but fin spent his life as a storm trooper so he might have had some training in hand to hand combat

Windu vs Sidious Fight was cut short from George not wanting to have a stunt double for the entire fight. There was alot more stuff recorded for it that you can find online now.
So how they made the lightsaber effect is reflective tape to make the shine. But I don't know how they made the color of the lightsaber.

My only real thing about the New Hope duel between Kenobi and Vader is when it was filmed Lucas didn't know how things would be decades later for the Jedi. The universe was still being developed which included lightsaber battles.

Maul vs Qui-Gonn is _NOT_ one of the worst duels especially if it displaces from the list the other other Rey vs Kylo duel in _The Rise of Palpatine_ where they smash the Vader mask letting Kylo know she was on the ship stealing the Plot McMuffin. Or if it keeps from addressing the stage show from Episode VIII where the stuntmen had to spoon feed everything to Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver slept through his choreography.
Also, Reva and the ‘shroomboys need to be addressed if we’re talking duels in _Obig-Whoop_ on Disney+.

The reason the first two are defeated in the windu vs Sidius duel is his “sheev spin” at the beginning stuns the weaker Jedi with a force scream and fisto gets distracted by anakins arrival.
The character of Ben Kenobi in Lego Star Wars fights with way more intensity than the film. Also, Palpatine was killed 3 Jedi masters for plot convenience, as all of it was leading up to Obi-Wan and Yoda being the last two survivors. However, as a 9yr old kid when RotS came out, I saw that scene and thought “damn he’s powerful”

The mace windu vs Sidious duel was actually supposed to be wayyyy better and longer and I think the other Jedi lasted longer but George Lucas wanted the guy that played Sidious, rather than his stunt double, to do the fight giving us the garbage we got.
Disneys Rey is just a ripoff of what Luke was supposed to be in the comics.

I kinda disagree with the Windu/Palpatine duel being on this list. I think the point of the other Jedi masters getting killed in a couple of seconds is to show how powerful Palpatine is. We have to remember that it was the first scene when we see Palps fighting with a Lightsaber, seeing him jumping around and screaming while killing skilled Jedi Masters without effort upped the tension a lot, and you feared for Windu after seeing that. He jumped screaming like an effing beast and took them out almost instantly, when I saw that I didn’t think “oh, what a waste”, I was thinking “holy sh*t, this is getting serious af”.
And the choreography shows how unpredictable the VII form (Vaapad) is, you see Windu perform slow but “weird” movements, that we usually don’t see in a Lightsaber duel. You see a “slow” Windu, and Palpatine jumping and attacking like there’s no tomorrow, and regardless of that, Windu was always tied or even dominating the fight. If it wasn’t for Anakin, Windu most likely would have killed Palpatine (the fact that Palpatine planned all of this, is another story).
It was a good fight imo, with extremely high stakes. It’s the fight that ultimately drove Anakin to the Dark Side after all, and the moment Palpatine decided to execute the Order 66. And also being disfigured by Windu was used by Palpatine to drive the Galaxy against the Jedi Order. Alongside the Anakin/Obi Wan and Luke/Vader duels, it’s probably one of the most relevant duels ever, everything changed because of it. And technique wise, it’s pretty lore accurate too.

Kylo ren as a character had a lot of potential being the offspring of some of the most legendary characters within the universe but sadly it all went to waste
It's sad that Disney, among many things, didn't add the beautiful duels of the prequels and nerfed their skills in combat. I was hoping the second duel of Kenobi and Anakin would be as epic as the one from episode 3, now that the both a actors returned for their roles and them both being skilled swordfighters
Those fights sucked. All style no substance. I'd take a less flashy fight with more emotion, tone and story over bouncing around and fast fighting that don't convey any of those things any day of the week

Retreating instead of advancing the whole time shows it. The point of fights in movies is to convey story, not just show flashy BS

The reason why the Jedi died so easily in palp vs windu is because of a ancient sith scream. Palp did it and it stunned the Jedi, so they couldn’t fight back.

the fight between sidious and the jedis was because the person acting Palpatine was so bad at dueling that it took him almost an hour to learn that, as you can see he still is struggling there

I think that Sidious in a fight with MazaWindu was holding back very much and waited for Anakin) Because later we saw his true dueling skills when Yoda was unable to do anything even with his fast acrobatic moves) And Sidious also was on a completely different level in force powers compare to Windu
in defense of the scene where obi and vader fight for the first time in the show, obi has pretty much cut himself off from the force and that's a BIG part of using a lightsaber, not just a lot of practice. on top of that he's terrified leading to rigidity in his movements. it's not bad choreography as much as it's implicating how weak he has become over the years
My thing about the Luke vs Kylo Ren fight was that if he was going to use this crazy powerful projection ability to fight while not there but it kills him, then what was the point of just sending a projection instead of going. It would have been cool to see Rey and Luke vs Kylo and Snoke and have Snoke actually be a threat and have Luke die covering Reys escape.
respectfully i dont really like your opinion. Its your opinion but i think most of these are really good. I agree with finn with the stromtrooper and rey vs kylo ren in the rise of skywalker. But most of the prequel fights you put in there is amazing, but you arent looking for quality at least i think so.
