Small space renovations truly create the most challenging and rewarding design dilemmas because a finite space by nature demands ingenuity. We cannot move walls or hallways, or combine apartments to solve spatial problems- yet we still must achieve our clients’ vision and design goals for the space. This studio is a great example of a small space success story! The result of modern influence on a prewar setting actualized the owners’ desire for warmth, flow, and the illusion of spaciousness. The project entailed tremendous time constraints, but in less than two weeks we were able to achieve the perfect combination of design, color, texture, material, space, and functionality. The result was an integrated, open space with design details that ensured that the apartment feels much larger than it actually is. Seeing how this “new” space moved the owners, Henry and Hilary, was the ultimate compliment - they loved their new home and were amazed at how it had been transformed!

They got a great deal, a Manhattan Pied-à-Terre with renovation for around $300k - worth every penny. As a Manhattanite myself, the small size does not bother me at all, it has everything they need and that is what counts - every extra square foot costs you. Plus, great use of the high ceilings. Very impressive.

Paula, I wish I were moving to NYC! If I did, you would be the first call I would make to get started on creating my new space!! Love this! BTW I moved from a 3,200 sq ft home into an apartment sized 200 sq ft! Tiny living rules!!! So easy to take care of and so liberating to be done with all the things I just 'simply had to have'! Now it's just me, a bed, my easel and paintings!!!😀👏

I think I’ve been subscribed for close to a year. I am a high school student looking into going to school for architecture and I find it fascinating the amount of details you pack into spaces. Also, I love how you stay true to the architectural details of the period of the homes. Anyways, I love looking back at your old videos. They show how much design both evolves and stays true to its dogmas. You are such an inspiration!

Hey Matthew! Well, thank you so much! It means the world to me.. to have an impact on someone at your point in life! I only wish I had discovered this so much earlier in life.. I truly love what I do.. and have a very "outside of the box" practice because I combine architecture, construction and design in one service. Not easy ever.. and in Manhattan.. probably the most difficult.. but worth it! Follow your passion.. it will serve you well in life.

Paula McDonald / Glad you were laughing along with me... With that said, as an artist (and sometimes freelance interior designer), I really love hearing your thought process for the design decisions. I also really appreciate that you have a wide-range of client types (& likely: budgets).
I just found your channel and have watched a number of these narrated walk-throughs. I think having variety in the types of spaces being desiged and an array of personalities (and therefore solutions) one is designing for helps keep one's work fresh and pushes the designer to constantly think outside the box.
I'm currently designing a very small basement master bedroom for a client with two children & one on the way. Their TINY bedroom must accommodate baby. 😳 Every challenge is an opportunity! (Right?!?! 😉)
Really great work here, Paula. Truly. In the end: we are designing for the client...and what they do with our design is their call, not ours. That's the reality! Almost anyone can show off a newly finished design project that is perfectly styled and camera-ready. What's more interesting (to me) is how people live in the space once the camera crew and designers leave. What's most important (in my view) is how effectively our designs have been executed & the real-life impact that results have on our clients.
Thanks so much for sharing the results of all your efforts...and thanks for acknowledging my comment!
Looking forward to more videos in the future. Onward to 2019! 😎
      Stream of consciousness afterthought:
--> Would you ever consider a collaboration with another designer? Or what about having two different designers create a "look" for the same client? The room or situation/client could be theoretical and viewers could vote on which design they like best. Would love to collab or even shadow you during the process of a complete design: beginning to end.

Although I can appreciate the added 8ft. storage entry closet and the redesigned bathroom this home doesn't click with me. The wall colors through me off, there is a space for an interesting gallery wall or large statement painting or picture to the right of the sofa bed yet that wall is left blank which throws off the balance of the whole living area due to the kitchen/dining area being stuffed to the gills, top and bottom.
Sorry, but overall it is just a meh for me. I feel like they needed to at least have a consult with an interior designer as well as an architect.

Another point, the apartment have tall roof. If this is my house, I would make loft bed. The under loft is sofa & upper is loft bed
