    Another important feature of the Damar class is like Starfleet's gelato machines, it's equipped with a Kanar brewery.
    On a more serious note, the Damar class is a grand symbol for the reforms and rebounds Cardassia has made post-Dominion war. The term "Science Intel Dreadnaught" is likely influenced by Starfleet; while the links to Cardassia's past are obvious, it also symbolizes Cardassia's future in relation to the UFP. It's cool to see you do a ship from STO & it'd be enjoyable to see more.

    In the storyline of STO, your impression that the goal of the new Cardassia is less sacrificial of Cardassians and more hesitant and observant - i.e. recon by recon instead of recon by sacrificial fire - is very much correct. The Romulan Republic (faction seeking to create a new homeworld for Romulans that represents "friendly" Romulans) is similar, and similarly dealing with the devastation of a homeworld, albeit much more recently. They are both more cooperative with the Federation and have a similar outlook, unwilling to be as callous with their citizens' lives as in the past (even the stability of the Federation is largely born out of human trauma from the conflict and division of Earth and its almost complete destruction, to some extent), and the class exemplifying this for the Cardassians being the Damar feels like an excellent way to honor its namesake.
    You might also be interested to know that the new Cardassia in STO is somewhat represented by Elim Garak, his personal ship is called the Tain, and he is played (voiced) by Andrew Robinson.
    It's difficult to even understand how it's possible, but Cryptic seems to have a better working relationship with past Star Trek actors than CBS/Paramount does, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but it feels - at least to me - like the people who put the most care and thought for the lore and fans of Star Trek during the current era (with the notable exceptions of Lower Decks and possibly Strange New Worlds - which I haven't seen yet but is, as I understand it, based on what Discovery was originally supposed to be before Kurtzman ousted the showrunner and replaced him with the moron responsible for DIS-continuity klingons with bat'leths that point fucking backwards because it's "defensive")... are writing storylines for an MMO that released in 2009. They have some missteps and they've had to retcon a lot of their original storyline, but honestly I quite like the Iconian War arc as something good and uniquely STO (though perhaps a show based during it would be fun) and the Temporal Accords arc and Hurk Invasion arc do (IMO) absolutely phenomenal work in wrapping up loose ends all across Trek throughout the years and tying the storylines together. It might not "be" official CBS canon, but it genuinely feels more canon to me than anything in Discovery except perhaps the ship designs (which despite everything I'm... actually quite fond of).

    The Damar class is certainly an interesting new way for the Cardassian military to expand, the fact that their entire military philosophy is now shifting towards more intelligence warfare like the Obsidian Order shows that their military it going down the Romulan route. The Damar is just the ship that the Obsidian Order would salivate over and dream about in its capabilities. The Fact that they're able to make a proper stealth dreadnought is impressive and shows how far they've come since the universal cruisers of the dominion war; it does certainly find that balance that the Hutet could never manage and the change in their doctrine to solo operations suits it well. A fairly well rounded ship, but it does sacrifice the firepower that a dreadnought would have and the firepower that the Romulans can field in a similarly sized stealth ship. I always found it to display Cardassian evolution in ship design philosophy well, still lagging a bit behind in firepower and capabilities but is the stepping stone in the new era of the Cardassian fleet.

    Something you don't mention is that the Damar actually carries two Yukawa frigates (basically Hideki IIs), so it doesn't need separate escorts like something like a Galor or the Hutet. The Damar also has the ability to mask its warp signature in addition to a cloaking device, which actually makes it a very difficult ship to detect despite its size.
    Something that's conveyed through gameplay is that the Damar class has much more precise targeting systems than previous classes, allowing it to compensate for the weakness of Cardassian disruptors by being able to strike specific weakpoints rather than relying on brute force. It also has a fairly potent active sensor array which helps it use its precision targeting systems most effectively.

    I like to think (having one of these in STO now by the way) that when the Cardassian Civil Defense Forces (the new Military for the Cardassian Union) looked at the new stuff coming out of the other powers, they knew they needed to keep up. Their Fleet Modernization program had these as part of the main objectives of all three.
    Detapa 'Escort'> "We need our own Defiant."
    Ghemor Flight Deck Cruiser> "This needs to be able to do the jobs of a Galor & Keldon."
    Damar Dreadnough> "We need this to be a Scimitar-killer."
    The latter would have involved them asking Starfleet for the Battle of Bassen Rift data so they knew what a Scimitar was capable of. Fun thing about being able to kill Scimitar-class Dreadnoughts is that it makes you really good at wiping the floor with everything below it.

    Ii see how HUGE the Damar is and I wonder how it would stand up to the Hutet or if there are any modernized Hutets in Post Reconstruction Cardassian Service. when you think about it the are still using Galors in the STO timeline so I find it somewhat frustrating that there are isn’t a Hutet or Two still in service being kept in the fleet because frankly they are very multipurpose ships and having a mobile starbase makes sense. Also it would mean you wouldn’t lose the shipbuilding and crew skills required for such larger ships.

    Both you and Triangulum Studios do something I find interesting. You state that, in universe, appearance has a say in starship design.
    It seems counterintuitive to me.
    With civilian tech, yeah. But how stupid would I feel dying because my dreaded new Packlid Battlecarrier had a crest of the Elder Packlid's chalice or whatever, instead of a proper underside phaser array?
    Or if the engineers chose a structurally less sound pylon design because it looks like a hawk's wing?
    Even if its not detrimental, it probably costs more though I guess if they're scarcity free, that's no big deal.
    Or maybe it's not the ideal color, like maybe the shiny red Emperor's Sword built into the nose of the alternate universe Packlid light cruiser might get it spotted or might interfere with sensors while a sensible non ornate front end would have been fine.
    Why wouldn't it be absolute dereliction of duty to put any aesthetic consideration whatsoever into the design of ships meant to keep the people or whatever safe?
    I'd be pissed if we started painting our aircraft carriers florescent green and equipping them with mini statues of liberty where a second catapult could have gone. Why is wings and beaks any different?

    The "sience" part of it's classification is part of the game mechanics. It means it has more room for science officers and consoles, so is more likely to have abilities that buff and debuff movement and shields, as opposed to engineers that are mostly about hull, shield and energy system buffs and repairs and tactical that are mostly increasing the damage output. As well as slightly stronger shields than engineer or tactical dreadnoughts.
    But it is still first and foremost a dreadnought, which usually means high health, medium firepower and low-ish manouverbility (compared to battlecruisers and escorts) and one hangar for fighers and/or frigates.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  2 роки тому

      So the emphasis is on survivability. Which given cardassias manpower issue makes sense.

    • @Norbert_Sattler
      @Norbert_Sattler 2 роки тому

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 Pretty much. Dreadnoughts are the kind of the "off tank" in MMO terms. Not as tanky as the main tank, but with more damage output and/or versatility. Kind of like a 3/4 tank, 1/4 DPS.
      Furthermore the ship was part of a set of 3, where on top of them being dreadnoughts, they got some minor features of the "pure" escort/tank/science ship trifecta by being either a tactical dreadnought/, engineer dreadnought or science dreadnought respectively.
      So I guess you could say the Damar is sort of 2/3 tank, 1/6 DPS and 1/6 mage or something along those lines. ^^
