There is no Bambino Trap - it's all about the knowledge and expectation of the watch enthusiast at an early stage of their watch collecting journey. The Bambino is what you run across when you first start getting interested in watches and people get it because it has some very strong positives - it is cheap, has a reliable automatic movement and it looks stylish. Around $200AUD for a watch isn't going to break the bank so it's an easy buy-in for the novice looking for something with genuine horological chops. It's only after that that they actually start to discover what their true preferences are and if going onto watchuseek has taught me anything, dive watches are the king, pilot watches are popular and dress watches are anomalies.
Personally, I love "dress watches" and I wear them but stylistically they are an echo of a bygone age (like the Madmen TV show). I wear them in an office environment with ties, Italian shirts and polished shoes but how much of the young generation, navigating through the "gig economy" are in this kind of environment? Is the Bambino a daily watch AND a weekend watch? Not really. People soon discover this when they realise that they don't wear the Bambino very often and then sell it. And technically speaking, the Bambino is not a dress watch - the seconds hand and date complication disqualifies it as such. It is closer to what used to be called "day watches" which is the place where watches like the SARB033 and 035 also inhabit. That is, too utilitarian for a dress watch but too refined for a tool watch.

    • @stevenwymor1398

Never thought of it as strictly a dress watch. It's not a tool watch for sure like a diver or pilot watch. I have those too. But I wear my Bambinos in all sorts of situations from dress to daily wear casual. Sure, my SKX or Ray II get the most wrist time, but I work from home and wear my Bambinos with anything. They dress up and they dress down with ease. I love all three of them. My SARB033 is kinda my dedicated dress watch due to the size even though that is kinda in the sport watch category too. But it slip under a cuff with ease and looks and feels pricier than it is. When I wear a suit, the SARB goes on the wrist. Oh, and love your profile pic, just noticed Camus.

Very well said. I fell into the "Bambino Trap" precisely because (1) I was at the very beginning of my watch hobby; (2) I didn't yet know my style preferences; (3) I didn't yet know my size preferences; (4) the Bambino is a very nice watch at a very nice price. Point 4 is the Bambino's VIRTUE, not fault. Points 1-3, meanwhile, are all on me. To call it a Bambino Trap is to suggest that the fault is somehow in the watch or the praise surrounding it, rather than in the buyer's lack of self-knowledge.

I really enjoy my open heart bambino and mine is 40.5mm (case) and 46mm (lug to lug) and I think it’s a fine size for a dress watch. However, I purposely did not get the version 4 bambino because its size is 42mm (case) and 48.5mm (lug to lug), which is personally too large for my taste. So I would definitely recommend the bambino series 1-3 as it’s a beautiful watch at a great price. I also really enjoy the Timex Marlin, which is 34mm and a beautiful hand winding piece.

Been happy with Bambinos.. Had a v2 in black - then gave it to a friend and promptly picked up a RA-AG0005L10A (Blue dial/open heart/hand-wind-hack movement/40.5mm case) .. The wind/hack was attractive to me - as well as the open heart design. While I don't wear it much, it's a cool piece of horology I'm happy to have in the collection.

I have the v4 with the green dial. I immediately changed out the strap for a more casual one. Though the watch is a little large for my taste, I wear it more than any other. It has been perfect for wearing to the office m-f and cheap enough that I don't worry about banging it around. The design and interesting color get a lot of compliments. The sound doesn't bother me either..I enjoy the experience of shaking it and listening to the movement! :)
If I had one wish to be granted it would be a smaller size.

I have always been a huge Orient fan, I own two. A Mako XL as well as a Ranger. I am enamored with the Bambino line of watches, but like you, I do not have an occasion to wear a dress watch. I do not work in an office. I do attend my wife's office Christmas party once a year, but that doesn't justify the need to own a dress watch. Besides my Orient Ranger does kind of fall into the dress watch category. I would absolutely love to own a Bambino but it is hard to justify it. I feel the same way about the Seiko Pressage. It absolutely mesmerizes me and I adore the looks of it, but I will probably never own one. They just don't fit my lifestyle. The green dial Bambino reminds me of the Alpinist and that is the Bambino I am most attracted to. I think the next watch in my cross hairs I think is the new Seiko srpc51 although you may have talked me into the Cadison. I love your work on the channel and am jealous of you. As I have said before, you are living the dream.

I've got a blue dial V4 and absolutely love it! It was my first automatic watch and have been really impressed with the quality that Orient provides for the price, so much so that I purchased another Orient recently, the white dial Gen 3 Sun and Moon. I have some micro scratches and scuffs on the crystal though, but it's only noticeable if you're trying too hard. Orient makes really elegant watches with top notch finishing and their in house movements have good accuracy. Both my Orients are around +5 secs per day :)

  • @EMoncayoC
    @EMoncayoC 5 років тому +39

Unfair... I bought my first bambino 2 or 3 years ago, fell in love with the watch, ended buying 2 more. I wear suit and tie to the office and they fit so well into the enviroment. No scratches so far and, as I stated before, I wear them everyday. Maybe it is you who have an active lifestyle or maybe you're just clumsy and scrath them.
The bambino is just unmatched for the price, you can't find anything similar on the market, inhouse automatic movement on a classic design for a true dress watch under $150? For that money you can either find "dress like watches" or quartz movements.
I had no problems buying straps on ebay, and the only negative I've found after owning 3 and wearing them every day, is that the strap that comes with the bambino is a lower quality leather...

Great comment, and my experience mirrors yours. Got a Bambino 2nd generation for $119 US from Long Island Watch, in black and rose gold. Lovely design, runs a very consistent +5 /+8 on the wrist and takes about 40 seconds to take out of storage, set, and wind 6 or 7 turns. I have several "dress" watches, and although the leather strap is cheap and rigid, I reach for this one first. Not a hint of a scratch 2 years in. Looks like new, and it actually has drawn a couple of compliments.

I had one I bought new a few years ago. Very pretty, dirt cheap. I liked it, I remember wearing it to a party and getting compliments. I wore it only occasionally, usually to the office. It was odd, beautiful, and cheap - like my ex! Therefore I loved it.
About a year in the date wheel would hang up sometimes short of correct alignment. Repair was out of the question on such a cheap watch. I learned to slap it to jar the date into position.
Then one day it just quit. I think the mainspring just let go. Dead. I swore I'd never get another, although I've been tempted. Instead I got a Seiko 5, a dressier version with bracelet and applied markers. It satisfies my craving for shabby chic. I've always had good experiences with the 5s. No more Bambinos

Wear it to tell time and date for function without the worry of damaging a much more expensive watch.
The tools needed replace the crystal are inexpensive and making the repair yourself on a $100 watch is rewarding.

I did almost buy a Bambino a while back. I still like the look, but don't really wear dress watches. The reason I didn't buy one is because of the domed mineral crystal. Good review and point about the trap. However it took me many years to realize that people are influenced by how you appear and dress etc. It is one way to get people's attention and see you at first impression in a positive light. In my opinion a nice watch always comes across in a very positive light.
However, you are very astute to note life style needs to be a key consideration. I was not keen to by a dress watch. I mean I want to wear an Orient almost routinely. Most in my opinion are meant for occasions or times wear you have your best one (regardless of price, focused purely on how the watch looks and makes you feel). I felt Gen 1 versions were too dressy. But Gen 2 variations offer a kind of middle ground. For example this FAC08001T0 blew me away. I bought it and use it often.

Clever and funny title! The short hands have kept me away. I’m puzzled as to why most of these except for the Ronan Numeraled versions, have what appears to be hands designed for a smaller watch.
If a mineral crystal becomes scratched, don’t you always have the option to send it off to replace it? And if so, I’d imagine you could request a sapphire crystal if you liked the watch enough to spend the money.

Oh lord, more whiny knocks on TGV. Bottom line: I think TGV is right about the Bambino. I also think Jody is right about the Bambino. Me, I picked up an Orient Sun and Moon v3 to cover my “day watch” slot - good looking and a bit more expensive than the Bambino, with sapphire glass and a day/date complication. But it too has the rickety movement feel that Jody was complaining about. I use it occasionally and enjoy having in my collection, but it certainly doesn’t get the wrist time that my Oris Aquis or Breitling chronograph do. Which goes to the point Jody was trying to make: the question isn’t whether the Bambino is a “good” watch, or a “high value” watch. The question is, it it likely to be a good watch for the lifestyle and preferences of a specific person? That’s a more meaningful question, but also a personal question.

I ended up with 2nd and 3rd gen Bambinos sitting on a watch case. I have not flipped them because of all the memories, but they did not get any rotation among my Aqua Terra, Alpinist, Oris Pilot, etc

Sadly, I wanted a V2 Bambino but ended up with Seiko Quartz dress watch with a sapphire crystal with 20mm lug width to fit my NATO strap collection (SGEH43). Better for my needs and so much more beautiful in person than in online photos. I had no idea their V4s had a more standard 22mm lug width. Now I want a V4 in green/gold to get that Seiko Alpinist look without the price tag!!!

I fell in the trap. Great review, I own the same watch and pretty much agree with your assessment. I haven't had any issues with scratching the crystal.

Bambino v2 was my first watch. Turns out I end up wearing a diver almost every day, but it's still nice to have something dressier when the occasion calls for it.

It is a "trap" so to speak, I bought two of the V1's. I wear them only for more formal dress, so I do not wear them too often. I tend to call them my poor man's Calatrava. Definitely good price and nice look, but I never looked too deeply at the mechanicals. Agreed, I have 40.5 mm versions but would like to have seen them moving to 38-39 mm version and sapphire crystals. (P.S. I wore a stainless steel Seiko 5 in the office wear)

I almost bought a Bambino small seconds until I realized I can get a vintage Omega or a Tissot for a little more money. I do feel like the Bambino is an awesome alternative to a lot of fashion watches out there though.

Hiya Jody.I can't comment as I don't have one,I don't wear a dress watch even when dressed up but your video prompts me to ask how many have fallen into the Chinese cauldron?!!! Despite me banging on for months how good they are......had my second failure inside a year whilst winding one last night!I only Don it occasionally but it sounds and feels like the winding pinion has failed.Havent looked yet but not good!Anyway great video as always.Cheers,The Len.

I bought the 1st generation (non-hacking, non-winding) version 3 with the slate gray dial from Long Island Watch a couple of years ago, largely influenced by the TGV review. Overall, I’ve been very pleased with the purchase. I love the clean, classic look, and I’ve managed to avoid scratching the huge, domed crystal. I replaced the stock strap, which isn’t very good, as everyone knows. I think it was a fantastic value for the money, at the time. However, I got an Omega Railmaster 60th anniversary edition last year, so I don’t wear the Bambino nearly as much as I used to. I was disappointed to learn the the new Bambinos are 42mm with 22mm lugs. That’s too large for a dress watch, IMHO. I think it would have been a better move to make 38mm with 20mm lugs, which would fit better on more people. I love your videos- keep up the good work! :)

Great topic. Love the channel,. The Bambino Trap = novice watch enthusiast influenced by internet hype and hucksters to purchase inexpensive watches of marginal quality such as the Orient Bambino as part of a “collection” which turn out to be unimpressive in the flesh and seldom worn. Buyer beware. Much better to save your money over time, defer immediate gratification, and purchase a quality piece to be cherished and worn with zero buyers remorse. Save your money. Better to have one quality timepiece than a dozen cheap watches in a “collection” as touted by a paid internet influencer. Do your research and buy quality.

I think the best way to wear a Bambino, is to put a divers watch strap on it and wear it doing everything that you do... Some say, "let it snow"... In this case, let it scratch.

That winding sound is less obtrusive on mine, I have the same exact watch. Cheap, but I still like the looks. Strap is not suitable for a dress watch.

I believe the reason why Orient doesn't make the Bambino smaller is because it would be in direct competition with their own Orient Star model line which typically sell in the $300 to $400 dollar range.

Do I have a better and more elegant choice then the bambino? i looked for the orient star a few bucks more but find that the logo on this is even bigger and like the bambino dial more. Everyones help is greatly appreciated.

This one got booted from my watchbox and sits unused in a shelf somewhere. The hand are just too short, or rather the watch is too big for its hands. Also, the contrast between the indecies and the dial is not enough for my aging eyes.

One of the worst watch-crimes: hands too short... You might buy a watch and not notice it at first, but there will always be a notion that smoething is off, until you do notice, and you'll never unnotice. At least the minute hand should reach the minute track!!!
