I replaced my gasket on my XL a few months back and I wish I had watched this video first. Next time I do it I'll definitely follow this guide. Thanks for putting this video out!
My egg was many years overdue for a clean burn, realignment, and new gasket. This and a couple other videos on your channel helped me get the job done. Thanks for the great content!
I find using a paint/rust remover drill insert from hardware store works best, no chemicals needed. Make sure if going this route the drill insert is Not a wire wheel as it can damage the ceramic. Easy to do. Another quality Fogo instructional production by Captain Ron. You make it look easy. 👊
Great video! I followed you thru the end and my paper test was good! You made this so easy for me and being a female I can't thank you enough! In 24 hours I'll be using my green egg again! ❤
This is the guy I was looking for to show me how to change the gasket!! Just got a bunch of new smoking toys from Thermoworks and need a new seal to try out this Signals & Billows combo I got.
Nice job, definitely best video I’ve seen on gasket replacement. Need to take an afternoon to do my MM, L, and XL myself. Really enjoy your Egg videos, keep them coming!
I have replaced my gasket twice in 8 years. I recommend 60 grit sandpaper on a 5 " orbital sander to get the glue off after scraping as much glue off as you can.
Ron I love your videos and your energy! Makes me want to get out there and cook even more. Thanks for this video, turning the lid upside down in the egg is genius! Great tip! Can you do a video on how to realign the lid in case of an over bite or under bite? I’m having trouble getting mine aligned. Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa.
Hey Tim, thank you so much my friend. Maybe I will just have to come visit in S Africa to demonstrate it in person! LOL, I made a note and it is now added to the list.
I notice some cooker like the Komodo have a seal similar to what is found on an electric range. Is something like that available for the green egg and have you ever put one on?
I have an XL. I'm using the Flame Boss 400. My seal was letting air pass through making it hard to keep temperature in range. I replaced the seal. The roll did top and bottom but was 3" short of going around the chimney.
You mentioned doing a paper test at the end of the video to see if there was a good seal. What do you do if there isn't a good seal? I had this happen at the front and back of the grill.
You will need to do a band adjustment on it. You should have a slight pull on the paper all the way around. We did a few videos on band adjustments as well.
Hi Ron, thanks for another great video on a timely subject. I am planning for a clean burn and gasket replacement next spring. I think I will do two additional things. I will use a dremel-type tool instead of sandpaper and I will make a couple of small slits in the lower gasket near the hinge for the temperature probe wires so they are not sitting on top of the gasket. Thanks again and keep it up. :-)
Hey Brent, Well, I live in S Florida so I can't say that I can answer that from experience. From what I read and have researched, the adhesive should stick without a problem.
Awesome. I figure the day I change my gasket, I’ll do the band assembly set as well. Maybe an instructional video on putting on the new set on to an egg?
Great tutorial, I've done mine several times using the same technique. I need to do a clean burn soon and will probably have to replace mine again. It's really not that difficult just as you said, just need to take your time.
My question is I have a brand new egg. Just put it together and when putting it together I seen the gasket is off on the bottom portion of the egg. I have NOT done an initial cook on it yet. Can I peel the tape/ gasket up and reposition it correctly? It came this way from the factory. Thanks
Hi David! First, welcome to the addiction! Second- I think you will be fine. as long as the gasket is covering a good portion of the edge. You could always contact the place that you bought it from and they may correct it for you.
Just did the clean and now time for the gasket. I'm curious, I have a large egg and was thinking of just taking the top out of the retaining ring. Is this not suggested?
You could try wedging a butter knife or something in there and move it along to free it. I wouldn't twist it. The other thing you could do is to put some lit charcoal in the front vent and heat it up to try and loosen it.
Hi Ron, I have a medium size BGE that I will need to replace the gasket. My question is do I have to break in the new gasket by doing one to two cooks at 350 or less degrees F?
The Big Green Egg gasket now does not require a break in period. It can't hurt but if you put a new gasket, put it on, leave the dome closed for 24 hours and cook away. Even though it is no longer required, I personally feel that the 350 or lower cook can't hurt but it's not as necessary as it was before.
You mention there is even enough gasket material to go around the chimney. Mine has never had any around the chimney. Does it around the very top surface like on the lid and base, or around the outside surface of the chimney? I never seen it done.
Ron-i just replaced my BGE gasket and the lid no longer sits properly. It is very slightly hanging off the back. Cannot seem to get it to sit right any more. Any ideas how to fix? Many thanks!
Hey Jeff, nice job on the gasket, it sounds like it was definitely ready. We did videos on how to fix that with the older style bands as well as newer bands. Here is a link to one of them. ua-cam.com/video/7zmaPhP-D-4/v-deo.html
I used the Rutland (I think) furnace gasket on bottom only. It worked great for years. Base cracked at 18-19 years, so new base came with stock. Debating which way to go as it’s getting time to replace the gasket. The new hinge system seems to align dome to base easier and much safer to take apart. Old system requires special pieces to stop spring from being uncontrollable.
Great video Ron! Easy task, just seems time consumin’. A wire wheel on a drill should help with the stubborn glue spots. Did the regulator cap gasket get damaged as well?
I changed my gasket today in my large BGE but I failed the paper test…. I pulled the paper out with zero resistance in the front and little on the sides. How do I correct this issue?
This video may help. If you have new style bands, search fogo dome and the other video will pop up. ua-cam.com/video/y6Zsa1YFh0k/v-deo.htmlsi=emqfQDl8vG21bo0Q
The blanket trick and putting the dome upside down was a lifesaver. But I just put it back together and I have a decently sized gap in front that the paper test did not pass How do you fix this???
Great video Ron. I know the day will come when I have to do my XL and this is so much simpler than expected except for how easy you made lifting the dome. That'd definitely be a two person job in my case. Question, did you vacuum out the scraped off gasket residue that fell into the pit? Also I'd like to see you do a similar video on an Egg with the older band setup like my Mini Max has. I have replaced that one once but had to take the entire top and bottom band setup off. Thank you so much for this.
I replaced my gasket and now my lid isn't closing all the way. I put it back together exactly like the video said but after putting the springs on it has about a 1/8th inch gap. How can I fix this?

Hi Barry, we are actually filming a Rutland gasket video this week!
Thought they recommended using the plastic spacers between dome and bottom.
You certainly can, I never found them to work the way that I'd like.
What grit sandpaper did you use to sand off the old adhesive?
I believe it was 220.
Question: which is better, the BGE gasket or the Rutland gasket?
I really think that it's up to the individual. Many say that the Rutland is a longer lasting gasket.
