Mike… this is one of your best videos. Really appreciate that it was all good advice without “promoting” any bait, or tackle. Don’t get me wrong… I completely get that you need to do right by your sponsors, and business is business. But it was truly refreshing not to be “sold” on anything this time around. Have a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Ike these are gold. Im guilty of almost all of these. I absolutely dislike having to fish a bait i dont want to fish but i know i need to learn to do it anyway. These are now my new years resolutions. Much appreciated buddy.
Like a preacher from the pulpit. Your passionate delivery of information makes remembering it easier. Definitely helping to save anglers from the errors of our ways. 🤓
Slowing down is probably my biggest problem because I like to stay on the move... oddly enough lots of times when I do finally make myself slow down that's where the stubbornness sets in and I get locked into trying to force something burning up tons of time. You hit the nail on the head with this one man!!!
Always good to review this stuff! Thanks Mike; appreciate you and BassU. Hope you and your family are blessed this New Year. Happy to see ya back in the Elites personally-hope you catch em this season.
I have found when I’m fishing a wacky rig that I pretty much have to re-tie after every fish I catch. Anymore I don’t even really check, turn the fish loose and re-tie because the line is almost always damaged with a wacky rig. I love this channel incredible down to earth information
I've been fishing tournaments close to 20 years now you along with a few others were my inspiration to get into it in the first place and I make these mistakes still all the time 😂
I've been fishing for years for fun and I know I have been doing all these mistakes. Now that I am trying to be more serious I will definitely work on all of these this coming year. Thanks for making this video to remind me to think more about my mindset.
Great Video Mike! I've both been victim to these mistakes and try to tell others to watchout for them. Great reminder thanks a lot! Glad to hear you're coming out of retirement! I'll bee rooting for ya man.
Good refresher, its so easy to not think about things until its too late, but making the little things habits can help us all improve our catch ratios.
Mike, thanks for taking the time on this video. The advice you gave is golden. I am so guilty of these mistakes and now that I have a kayak I have really enjoyed fishing at a slower speed and enjoying the time on the water that much more. Have a Happy New Year and I can't wait for your next video.
I started analyzing every catch a few years ago. My success has improved a lot. Everything else you state is spot on. I fish the conditions or situation. It may be the same area but fish move, weather changes, and the fish may be behaving differently. This means using different lures or tactics. I see people use the same lure or color all the time. They wonder how I catch fish when they do not. I have the view if a lure or color does not work. Use something else even if to only practice a technique or try a different color you normally do not use. P.S. love your videos. You keep the people thinking of the basics for success.
Mike, you just gave maybe the best of the countless fishing videos I've ever watched... so true, fish are constantly changing with the constantly changing weather and water conditions and we better learn to change with them. Thanks for emphasizing that !
Ike, probably one of the best videos I have seen in a while! I’m gonna re watch and write those things down, some I don’t do like dock talk, but others I do, if I write them down I’m more likely to not do those mistakes. I guarantee, if you do those things more often than the other guy, your return to BASS will be a quick return to the winners circle!
Fantastic reminders for when you are on the water... Line checking is a huge thing, tons of rock and standing timber in the lake I fish. Line checking cost my partner and 2 fish in a one day tournament.
Thank you sir. My friend spent a day with you as a Marshall at Grand Lake and speaks highly of you. I appreciate your candor with these tips. I am one season into kayak tournaments and recall making 4 of the five mistakes you mentioned. I already retie often. I will be setting an alarm for the hour (maybe 45 min), slowing down is another great tip and possibly my favorite is to be thorough!!!
Mike very good tips I have followed your career since. I can remember I remember reading. About you fro. The beginning when you stood up at Fairview lake in a cabin with your family you love fishing and it shows whenever I see you in a tournament or I see you in an article I read it or watch you I am always rooting for you keep up your cheerful attitude you are definitely the best
this is one of the best one's im the same way about goin fast n moving on to next .its kinda funny to see tht its not just me but alot of people to..im tryg to slow my bad habits on this one thnks man...u are the man..
Mike you hit the nail in the head when you mentioned the favorite lure 😂I do that a lot but I’m going to remember that clock trick!! Thanks for all the educational videos!!!
Ike, you are spot on. This is by far the best advice I have received. I have been guilty of all five mistakes not only in tournament fishing but also in pleasure fishing. I used to do float tube fishing and I learned to thoroughly fish the area before moving to the next area. Thanks
Thanks Mike ! Hey I met you in Richmond Va at Bassarmma years ago when you won the classic. I'm still a big fan! I bought that shirt your wearing and the camo hat Ike never give up from TW. Nice THANKS. afico Elites 2022 yeah man!
Hindsight is 20/20 , lost the biggest bass of my life this past summer not checking my knot:( Happy New yr Ike looking foward to seeing you in the elites....
Yes sir. Was pulling a jig through very grassy cypress trees on one of the best lunker lakes of the South. Every cast dragged a big clump of grass back. Pulled up after the first couple bumps, wad of grass. I started to just reel it in like the previous 100 casts but this grass clump was probably a 12lbs bass with bulge eyes and a hump on its back. Never got a good hook in before it went into low gear and got off. Lol 30yrs of fishing (at the time) since I was 5 yrs old and got complacent. Oh well like dad said, "if I'm gonna be dumb, I'd better be tough" 😆
You're making it harder for me to follow other anglers and catch fish behind them Ike. Your Videos are spot on. Sometimes it's color change, sometimes it's technique change, sometimes it's altogether bait change..
GREAT advice! A subset to fishing yesterdays fish is persisting too long with a bait you catch a bass on-ESPECIALLY if that bass was caught immediately after just starting. I call it the "jinx" bait. It's "caused" me to stay with a bait/color/technique/location FAR longer than I should have. I don't know why but bass seem to LOVE when you first tie on a lure. They'll jump all over it. But once that first bass is caught, they seem to want nothing to do with it.
I wish you a happy new year Ike. Imo there's only a few bass channels that gets my respect. Tactical bassin is one for sure and your channel is right up there. I love watching your passion and excitement in bass fishing. "Never give up" always thinking your words when the day has been tough trying to catch that one big mama. Peace out be safe
Loved this information. This is better than what lure is hit right now or even what technique is doing well because this information applies to any lure and any technique. Great video
Everything thing that you said is very true. Even though I know all of those mistakes I still make them. I try to do better but I still make them. GREAT VIDEO MIKE
Yep! Lost a monster bass a few months ago to not doing number 5 and I kind of had a idea that the line had been rubbing on rocks. Snapped as I was grabbing the net right before seeing it but I know it was huge. :(
This was great topic we've all done these things Mike , i also love the long vids like this. I caught my PB fishing a spot on the bank for 8 hours not a bite and then changed baits and slowed down and 💥🎣🐟
I always do this. You either get a book or two comments. I understand you far more than I did. I mean how do I get to know anyone over the internet. I was always a closet Bass Pro, but there were almost zero bass where I grew up, so trout and Salmon it was. If I was a youngster now I could see going to be a Bass Pro but I was born in 1957. No tech to speak of and no way to expand my horizons. You take care Mike! Love ya sir, from a yakky Canadian.
Mike great points and have been guilty of all of these as well and as many times they have happened, I still make them. The one that hits home the most is not SLOWING DOWN if i did slow down and been more thorough, i would not do the other 4 mistakes you have mentioned lol. I have typed these top 5 in my phone along with your statement "Never Give Up" as fishing is a mental game especially during tournaments. I will review them each time I am on the water to keep me focused. Thanks for sharing these 5 mistakes and keep up the great content. Always love your videos.
Fantastic video Mike! We all still do them all. Line checking & not re- tying are my worst. I would add that. I never place waypoints on fish catches. Only on cover/structure that can be verified on other trips with side/down & 2D. So no need to get rid of waypoints since it has nothing to do with fish catch history. Again, I loved this video and ALL your “In The Shop” series. Thanks for sharing so much knowledge with us. Oh, BTW, just saw the Zona episode with you guys on Erie. Loved it!
I passed all the first four, but number five is something I lack at. I need to check the line, I check the knots regularly but haven't checked the line leading to the bait. Thanks
I just got burned by the line last weekend. I caught a smaller 1.5 to 2 pounder flipping downed timber on a wacky rig and maybe 3 casts later hooked a bigger one that broke the surface and also my line.
Hey bud see you got the new Bass Cat Couger! Well that's my decision also but would like to hear about the Yamaha??? I have had 1 it was ok but have been true to Mercury's Pro XS. If you have another day in the week I would love to hear your reasoning on your motor choice.
I have had the problem with leaving fish trying to find more fish and just noticed this bad habit at the end of the year! All these tips are going to be great too! Hopefully a more productive fisherman. Thanks Mike.
Mike this pertains to even fly fishing. The questions include "Why did the fish refuse my fly at the last second? Many rivers I fish, you only get that one refusal. Learn quickly or you go home disappointed. You hit the nail on the head Mike, all five times!
Good tips checking line & re tieing is somethings I used to be horrible about!, I check my line & re tie all the time now. I'm also a kayak fisherman. Started 6yrs ago with PA12 last spring upgrade to PA12 360. & Recently moving down south learning completely new fisheries, the herring lakes Clarks hill, Russell, Hartwell all in my backyard now. Sense your pro then transitioning to kayaking how do you approach some of these large lakes with tons of creek arms? I've mostly stayed in same creek arm trying to learn that area, there's just so much other water. How do you approach it from a kayak?
Solid, solid information!!! I do them all at various times but, not checking my line is the biggest! I will fish a spot to death, too. I want to make sure that my lure and retrieval speed aren't the issue. 5 great points that anyone can look back on and think about. Good video, Mike👍
We are all stubborn at times, some more than others. Check line and retyping is needed. And swapping rods every 30 minutes to an hour to give your line and knot a break also. Line gets more stretch and more backlashes. If you know you are going to use a certain bait have two rods with the same bait so you don’t have to change lures.
One advantage to fishing lakes with numerous toothy critters; I don't make mistake #5 very often because I'm constantly checking my line to make sure a toothy didn't nick my line up.
Love the honesty Mike great video.#6 toughest fish to catch, other people's fish maybe you did touch on this with " dock talk".Happy New year to you and your family.
When you were mentioned being stubborn and only using one bait/method,I immediately thought of my buddy that uses ONLY big swimbaits or wakebaits 😂 (we won't mention the fact that I never go anywhere without a jig or Berkley power worm rigged up😁)
I grew up in the Bill dance and Roland Martin time. One thing they had in common, is they kept a journal while practicing. Every thing that went on and conditions to get that bite. It's for real.
Stubborn, hard headed, not listening...when you get to my age of 68, it's called "set in your ways ".😁 Whether good or bad. Ike you are so correct with this video. I started tournament fishing in 1984 and still make these mistakes. Thanks for the video and for sharing. Happy New Year!
