Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
Wow just seeing this out of the box ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.
Happy for Mike for being voted into the Hall Of Fame. Much deserved.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. A very informative and very detailed video on this subject. Great job, Mike.
Yes and it confirms what I thought I knew........ Now to get to shop and see if the right reels are on the right poles. How many of us started by putting a low profile on a spinning rod? OMG the growth....
Mike. There’s a lot of options on IM 6. I M7 IM 8 ect. Also 24 ton 30 ton 40 ton and so forth. Would like to see you break all that down and give your options on all that. Also keep up the utube videos. Great work
Mike’s attention to detail with each piece of gear explains why he’s such a successful angler
You say attention to detail; I say, while he may be the king of bass fishing, he's also the king of 2 steps forward and 3 steps back when it comes to repetitious "detail".
My favorite rods 5'6 ultra light spinning, 6'6 medium light spinning, 8'6 5 weight fly rod. Love using light tackle.
Nothing compares to fighting a decent pike or bass on a light setup. Have caught many 16 to 18 in bass on 4'6 ultra lights and its mental!
You need to find a fishery with white bass in it and see how a 2lb white feels on a 7 ft ultralight.
Love my 5 wt for smallmouth
hell yeah
Excellent content. I like these longer, more in depth videos. Thanks for giving your time and knowledge on this forum.
This was so darn helpful Mike. I truly appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Thank you
Power.....Action. Completely different. I agree with the three rods, but so many people suggest a rod and say the power, but not the action. You did explain it well, but someone new will look on the rod and see Fast action and be confused.
Casting. 7-4 ft. MH power. Moderate Fast or Fast action. Buy this one shorter and it will handle lighter baits better. Longer and it will handle heavier baits.
Spinning. 7 ft. Medium power. Fast action.
Casting, 7-5ish +. MH power. Moderate action. Crankbait/Treble hook rod.
It's amazing how many confuse power and action or just state the power
Outstanding information. I have watched two other pros tackle the same question and you by far covered the topic the best. Thank You for taking the time to give us useful information, which in-turn helps us become better fishermen.
Medium heavy is POWER NOT ACTION.
Maybe I should watch the whole video before I comment but I can't help myself. It's not because it's composite. It's because it is a moderate Action rod designed for Crank Bates and other Bates with trouble hooks.
I love spinning rods, I can make very accurate casts and fish the light stuff so easily. Great choice for only 3 rods, I have an ugly stick so it counts for a delayed action rod. Fish my cranks on it and yea its cheap but works well.
And the fish don’t know …
Sometimes I like to think the fish I caught goes back and says" damn, it was Shakespeare Y'all!
It's perfectly suitable for cranking and top water
You seem to be describing mod fast vs fast action. Medium heavy isn't action, it's power.
I'm not going to let my wife see this, otherwise she will think that she can limit my rods and reels to 3...
What you're calling a delay Rod is actually a moderate action rod If you give people the right terminology when they go by a rod, they know what they're looking for.
I think you have action and power Confused.
Medium heavy is the power of the rod, and the action would be moderate, fast or extra fast. The action of the rod dictates where it bends not the power.
So what does the extra 4 inches let you do that you couldn't with a 7 foot medium heavy? Except maybe, MAYBE give you a TINY more distance on a cast? I never understood this. I hear guys telling me "you need that 7 foot 3 ..... Why? My 7 foot is doing everything you're doing...... My 6'6" is doing everything you're doing. Why can't I frog with a 7'2" heavy rod rated up to 2oz? Why does it HAVE to be 7'4"? Guys all around me get SO wrapped up in the smallest of things. "You gotta use this to throw that" I get it matters to a point. I realize i'm not going to be throwing something with a big meaty hook on a medium-lite rod. I'm talking about tiny things that people over think. I prefer shorter rods. Personally when I'm looking to buy a rod I look at lure rating and usually opt for the shortest rod in the lure rating i'm after. That being said if I had to pick just 1 rod to do everything it would be a 7' medium heavy fast. Too much marketing IMO. Unless you're in it to win money, Stressing over a few inches on a rod's length is pretty silly. I'm talking to my buddies and local people i meet fishing.
so nobody gonna talk about how he spent 4 minutes talking about MH power all while conflating it with a Fast action???
I think the 3rd rod heavily depends where you're at and what you do normally, if it were me...I'd choose the same three, but if you're down south, you might benefit more from a heavy POWER, fast ACTION rod because of the cover that's so prominent and flipping and frogs are the jam down there
Power not action??? Lol yea that’s what I would say too. I personally prefer a shorter do it all rod, between a 6’9” and a 7’2” med heavy power, fast action. I like the vengeance 6’9” med heavy as it has so much backbone
@@legionssb gets on my nerves when people confuse the two... Especially people that should know the difference. My go to is a sixgill fishing 7'3" MH fast, 7' M mod fast, and a 7'2" ML spinning...I can do 90% of my fishing with those three. .I'll even run cranks on the MH, I'll just switch to a 6 speed reel with copolymer line
@@c.shoefish exactly! That’s why I like tacticalbassin because they know the difference, and every other difference it seems lol. And I’ll honestly use a casting rod for 1/8 oz jigs if it’s my best option, I just cast light stuff pretty well, but really to me it’s more about the action and accuracy the technique requires, not the power. But copoly is super underrated ngl. I also use it as cranking line when I’m using lipless cranks on a fast action rod. That gives me the stretch and then I’ll go braid to fluoro or straight fluoro on my actual crankbait rod
@@legionssb I love TB...also flukeMaster and Brian latimer...seems like noone uses or knows about copolymer...I've used everything man, from dozens of companies but I always find my way back to copoly line...either trilene sensation or izorline xxx...only rods that don't have copolymer is my frog rod (has braid) and my bottom dragging rods (I use sunline fluoro) copoly isn't the best at anything but good at literally everything, I land way more fish with it, and hardly ever have break offs. I even use it on my spinning rods which I have quite a bit of for walleye and finesse bass stuff
@@c.shoefish yeah, great do it all line, but I gotta say fluoro is wayyy better around rocks, it’s really hard to break or cut, braid is my favorite though, if I can get away with it then I will most of the time. I only use braid to leader on spinning gear. The fact that braid has no memory and no stretch is great. Copoly Is severely under used but the P-line fluoro coated stuff is my favorite, not a lot of memory for line of its kind
I'm trying to find the Abu Garcia Ike Finesse Series Spinning rod from the video. The links are not currently working. Is this rod still available? If so, could you provide a link to it? If the rod has an updated version that you recommend, can you provide a link to it or to another similar rod that you would recommend? Thanks!
Ike Series 3.0 are coming this fall! Older models are no longer coming out!
this makes me feel amazing i got all three rods already and that’s all the rods i got, i got a duckett jacob wheeler medium heavy 7’2(not exactly the first one but close enough) with a shimano slx xt 8:1 gear ratio, a st croix 7” medium spinning rod with abu garcia real which is like 5:3:1 gear ratio, and a older cheap but still good abu garcia vigilante 7” medium rod(not sure if it’s composite) with a lews speed spool mc5 6:4:1
I keep 7 rods on my deck if im fishing bass. About 12 more in my rod wells. I can't imagine anyone being against a spinning rod, that doesn't make sense. My Shimano Vanford is one of my favorite reels of all time. I want to buy a second for crappie, because I hated my Flueger President Crappie reel, and gave it to my nephew.
I also have a Mako for Salt Water (I have beachfront with a personal boat launch in New Brunswick, Canada), and that has another 40.
mike, i bought 6 pound flurocarbon because it was on sale. i wanted 8.. can 6 pound flurocarbon still catch bass?
YES!!!
Hey Ike: For anglers only fishing sitting down in a small kayak, (super fun IMHO but limiting) the best #1 is 6'6" MH F. Then 6'8" M and 7' composite. Nothing over 7'.
Thanks a lot Mike for this video I’ve been looking for this kind of information for a long time and I subscribe to a lot of bass channels. Great content!
7'2 Power series - Medium Heavy - Casting rod
6'4 Delay series - Meduim - Casting rod
7'4 Finesse series - Medium light - Spinning rod
Those are the rods I own, in the Ike Series.....
Love all of them 💕 ❤️ 💗
The power series is VERY powerful, backbone for days!!!
The delay series is so lovely to use , shorter butt section and great feel to the rod.
The finesse series is one of my favorites.... Until you feel that medium light 7'4 rod load , then you'll understand! It's so fun and leverage for days, but the feel of a pond ultra lightweight rod.
When I get more ... I'll add a delay series 7'6 "crankbait rod , as if I need another cranking rod hahaha
Maybe a power series meat 🍖 stick 8 foot frog rod in Ike Series, power series. Btw add more of your rod to Amazon , I noticed not may left on Amazon.
Ask abu for me please Ike...
That was very helpful information. Thank you for making that video.
Man, he’s starting to sound like Don Kotts sometimes.
He is a bit
Once you hear it you can never not
"The rawd bends in hayalf!" Yup. Can't unhear that now. Wow.
I'm struggling right now because I can not take my eyes off the Moana chicken in the background haha.
Oh great..... now I can’t stop staring either.
I got ABU Garcia MAX STX medium heavy rod and 40 size reel I'm very happy with it light to use all day from the shoreline. In the combo both nice looking also.
here in São Paulo (Brazil) in my opinion it takes 4 sets to fish almost everything using artificial baits. 2 with 5'8 "Rod for top water lures, jerkbaits, etc., one light and one medium heavy, and two 6'3" or 6'6 "rod (here we consider these long rods for lures, more than that you end up fishing trees and monkeys here) one light and one medium heavy for jighead, soft baits etc. The light sets for fishing small snook, pb and bass, and the medium heavy sets for big snooks and traíra (Wolf fish) .all braid lines with fluoro leader
Thank You For The Best Explanation I've Ever Heard.
I don’t like the slow tip rods. 7’ M fast tip parabolic bend is so versatile I almost only use it unless throwing a jig. Faster tips help keep those light hooks in I think. Light firm rod is so nice with drop shot super finesse fishing. I can feel the dimples on the rocks.
Mr.Mike , I have more 7ft3 to 7ft6 med/hvy casting rod and reels in my Arsenal , than medium actions rods , cause they are so versatile , thanks for the advice on a spinning rod combo , loved it
Good stuff!! Glad to help!
This knowledge is Golden 🙏🏻 you are amazing for sharing so much.
Loved the info!! Great break down of rods and spinning reels and casters.
Daiwa millionaire, daiwa procaster 80 and my new Lews Mach smash my wife got me for Xmas...broke the Lews in today in front of my family on my first musky of the year.. first time using a chatter bait..she is my catfish queen 👑
A lot of times to see what kind of power it really is I’ll look at the lure weight recommendation like if I’m looking at heavy power rods and they say up to 2oz lures then I know it’s a pretty heavy rod but if it’s only up to 1-1/2oz then I know it’s a lighter heavy action
I feel like a 7'2 is a 7'6. Cause I am 5'5. Most important thing is pulling those bass out the grass!!! lol thanks for the breakdown! I have been wanting to try a glass composite rod.
One quick note here. There is something very important and I know that some people will be screaming lol. The type of reel: baitcaster vs spinning reel is MOSTLY a question of culture. A part of USA will preach baitcaster only but here in Canada it's 90% spinning reel. And wilderness we know... I am not saying that baitcasters are not good. They are good. I am not saying baitcasters can only do a fraction of the job. they are very versatile. But a spinning reel is, by design, less prone to birdnests (one example among many). However, a spinning reel will be more prone to line twists. There's always a trade-off in anything...
This being said, Mike, I think you've ma just a little tiny mistake. The best VERSATILE rod for a spinning reel combo is a Medium, yes... but Medium-Fast. It's like the finess setting ;)
As for the spinning reel ratio, "5.8:1", this is slow.... slooooow. Shimano released the famous Stradic ci4 in 2016, six years ago, and the ratio was 6.0:1 and the ci4 - 44000 is even at 6.2:1. The ci4 is now discontinued (so stupid...) and the new Vanguard (replacing the ci4) goes from 5.1:1 all the way up to 6.FOUR:1
My most used rod if I was bass fishing would be a 7’2” MH with a moderate fast action. ~6.6:1 with 17-20 lb Fluoro. Spinnerbaits, buzzbait, chatterbaits, and swim jigs (moving lures).
Add a spinning rod and the last option could go multiple directions. Probably a heavy or medium heavy casting rod with fast action. I’ll throw a crank on the spinning rod if needed.
Ok, I'm not trying to be a know-it-all or put doubt into your explanation but I'm a bit confused. I use St. Croix rods and all of their models are described different than your explanation. On St. Croix rods you will find listed these descriptions. Example, : Medium "power" - fast "action". Or medium/heavy "power" - moderate "action", etc. I even contacted St. Croix for an explanation of this. According to them "action" refers to how much of the rod bends, and "power" refers to how much weight it takes to make the rod bend. So when you say "medium/heavy" aren't you really referring to power instead of action?
What the hell is a medium heavy action. Medium heavy refers to power not action. Get it right. Action ranges from extra fast, fast, moderate fast, moderate, and slow action. Power ranges from extra heavy, heavy, medium heavy, medium, lite, and ultra lite. I can’t stand when people mix up power and action. There is no such thing as “medium heavy action.” You should know better.
I ONLY use spinning rods. I do everything from dropshoting to punching with a spinning rod. Very informative video.
I don't care to crank with spinning tackle at all
Me to
Spin gear is hassle free
Unless you get a birds nest
any travelingrods to test activity from the beach by bushes and threes?
I love that you threw the spinning rod in. It’s a must have. I just watched Roland Martin’s top 3 rods and he had some good choices, but no spinning rod. I couldn’t believe it
Mike I’m a new subscriber and I’m blown away with how informative your content is.
Jimbo! Thanks for the support!
I use a 50 year old 5ft 4" ugly stick rod for crankbaits and just recently put a 6.6 ratio reel on it and never had a problem landing one. I like a short rod whenever it comes to landing Big fish. I landed a 30lb flathead with the same rod and a zebco omega reel spooled with spider wire while casting a pork and jig. The shorter rod helps me fish slower while fishing fast because of line retrieve when I pop it off the bottom.
But why mix up casting weight (light-medium-heavy) with rod characteristics (slow-moderate-fast)??? It makes no sense!
I am just learning about all this, but I’ve heard other guys separate “power” from “action” and make a big deal about the distinction , so I’m surprised that it’s not pointed out here and the terms are used interchangeably. What gives?
This was a fantastic video Mike. You are very very good at breaking things down and giving clear simple descriptions and instructions. The avg every day casual fisherman or even a beginner would have no trouble trying to figure out what you’re saying. Much respect Mike. Keep up the great content. I LOVE the “In the Shop” vids. 😃👍🏼👌🏼💪🏼
This was very informative sadly ive always stuck with spinning rods i do have an ugly stick but after seeing everyone saying a bait caster is needed i feel like ive overspent with my 6 spinning rod collection and am missing out now
Spinning is the only fishing gear I prefer, good high quality spinning reel and rod is my preference
I got stuff to do. Get to the point mike. I counted 10-9-8-7.....Say what your going to say!
They don't sell 7'4" MH Ike Rods. And I thought the 7'2" rod was a versatile rod.
This is why fishermen our so confused on power vs action. When even the pros dont explain it right, how are people going to know better?
Good videos , but you never put down the rods model numbers . in one of your video I did liked few abu garcias , it was hard to trace the rod on your store .
What about line on that moderate casting rod? Great vid!
12-15
Please say what is it fast , med fast or what , I see that your spinning rod is medium- medium fast , Correct?
Why you confuse medium - heavy with moderate - fast action is soooo annoying. Two different things.
What can I used for sea bass 70 ft 8oz weight spinning or conventional reel also what rod?
Ike, I wish I had your knowledge. I am 66 and still not close to you. Look forward to ever meet you. Thank you my man.
The best explanation ever for beginners and everything else!
I fish out of a rowboat. Never needed anything over a 7ft 1 inch loomis. Lol
Wouldn't the amount or proportion of the rod that bends or loads be moderate/fast/extra fast action?
Can you tell me the model number on that composite delay spining rod so that i can ordered , thanks
Great video and explanations, Mike!
Love the content sure do miss seeing you in the tournament trail though
Awesome video
Does it matter what line you use on these rod set ups ?
Are the ike signature rods discontinued?
Coming soon...
@@mikeiaconellifishing Yessir! The 7'2 MH Fast Power rod is my absolute favorite.
Great information on rods and the reel’s thanks
Abu garcia round reel C3 5500 midle size ?????
I have a 7’ mhf, what difference would a 7’4” do?
I grew up using both. I fish with both. It is good for the ned rig
Get a BFS system to replace that spinning rod. Lol
Mike, any insight would be greatly apppreciated. I have athritis in my hands so I cant hold the heavy rods for long. I use light tackle most of the time. Works good with all but worms, hard to get a good hook set. Do you know of a light rod that has enuff back bone to set the hook? Thanks man.
Come on you say this as if everyone has a boat or truck to carry these long rods around. They don't.. hey you gotta make ya paper huh I get it..
Don't forget the folks that truly have to get it outta of the mud. Or better yet come from the trenches.. something to ponder...
7’ M spinning is the most versatile rod period.🙏
Nobody's dying to get an Abu rod....
Lol you couldn't give one away where I fish
Agreed. They are lacking there. Reels are good above $150
Excellent. I am glad you described what to look for instead of telling people the Manufacturer type....You gave us the Various Types of Manufactures and the Specific Rod type to look for....Most Pro anglers are trying to sell their own Sponsors Product....Thanks
Looks like an ugly stik! Man you got me with that one.
Gosh Mr. Ike, this was what I needed. I have bad anxiety and choosing what to take fishing has always been a trigger.
Here's where you got me
1. Spinning Combo- 6'6" Daiwa Procaster MF w Kastking Valiant Eagle 3000 w 35.5"RR
2. Power Casting- 6'6" Abu C3 MHF w Johnny Morris signature 711 w 31" RR
3. Delay Casting- 6'10" Denali Kovert LT MM w Piscifun Spark ( a bfs copy of your reels) 661 w 25.2"RR
This is my main trio now. Thank you so much for showing me this! It makes my trips way less stressful.
all my reels are abu i have the revo sx and use st croix poles
I’ve got a question about a rod and reel set up my grandpa used and stuck with me my whole life. I don’t think I’ve seen any of the bass master elites use but I’d like to know what you think but I don’t think I could fish them any other way.
So for fishing topwater (not including buzzbaits) and jerkbaits my grandpa has always used a left handed casting reel on a 5’6” pistol grip medium fast action tip. He use to always say that when he fished B.A.S.S. tournaments on Bull shoals (the only lake we fished cuz he had property there) that it wouldn’t wear this left wrist out for when he had to switch back to spinnerbaits which he would always catch much bigger bass on down there especially at night.
But I’d just like to hear you’re input on it Mike.
And btw since you hit the pro circuit back in 01 I think you were always my favorite pro I use to love when you would break dance after landing a big bass lol Great Mikes think alIKE
Just bought my Abu Garcia Ike Signature Delay Casting Rod. Thank you so much for your great advise.
I want: 1.Heavy power, medium heavy action 2. Medium heavy power, medium action 3. Medium power, fast action.
I am covered on all the rods except the medium spinning rod. For some reason I always get a medium heavy spinning rod and I know I’ve lost fish because of over setting where if I had been using medium I probably wouldn’t have broke off. Definitely next spinning rod will be medium action! I am obviously slow at learning but I come from the old school of the 6 ft 6 inch baseball bats!! Ha Ha Ha!! Thanks IKE!!
I'd like to get a show with teaching like Larry Nixon, Jimmy Houston, roland Martin. I miss your show
Hello Mike I have a question I have a Abu Garcia medium havey 7foot vengeance bait caster rod parade with a Abu Garcia black max bait caster reel is it considered a versatile combo fishing 🎣
My 2 7’2” MH Ike Rod have been very versatile for me! Use them for bigger jigs, vibrating jigs and spinnerbaits.
I don't like your definition of Medium Heavy, it's what most would call Fast Action. Medium Heavy usually refer to power, the weight of the lures that will load up the rod.
Hands down this was the best, most indepth, teaching video of all...and I do mean ALL of the vids I have spent countless hours watching! BRILLIANTLY DELIVERED!👏👏👏. 💯🔥.
Bass pro qualifier z 6:5:1 reel and their medium 7' ft fast action. 1/4 to 5/8 oz. You can throw finesse and heavy. Less than 200$. Love it! It my versatile combo.
You forgot one - a 7 wt fly rod.
Just an advertisment. so it is just a poor video.
bring back Ike Live 1.0!!
#stormtrooper
I’m guessing these are the choices for Monday? What about Tuesday thru Sunday?🤣🤣🤣. Great video, keep them coming!
great video. Ironic that the 3 rod combos you outlined are must have outfits that I use while fishing from my Hobie. Would be hard pressed to limit myself to three rods while fishing out of my bass boat)))))
Just curious on the other side of the coin when your fishing a tournament how many rods do you have rigged on the deck ready to go?
Gear ratios are important, but how many inches per revolution is more important. This is since you can have a higher ratio real that has a smaller deeper spool, mening it can pick up less line per turn over a lower ratio reel with a different size spool.
