- Lewis Hamilton & Valtteri Bottas' Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 was recently released for iRacing, ahead of the Abu Dhabi GP. We put it to the test against the fan-favourite Assetto Corsa with RSS Formula Hybrid 2021, to find out whether we have a new ultimate Formula 1 experience in sim racing.

@@arisk2410 no its not. They have like 5 or so. Lotus 49, lotus 79, hybrid McLaren and v8 Williams in addition to the merc. They also have a lot of other openwheelers like f3 and frenault 3.5 etc
Must admit, even with some modest gear.....I can't remember driving a car that is so addictive. Surprising easy to drive and just when you think you are really starting to nail some quickish laps, your still five seconds off the quick guys! This car really 'speaks' to you

In RSS defense, it does take a lot of setting up to get the car to behave better in the RedBull Ring, after which the driving looks way more like real F1 videos. I feel RSS default set-ups really need to be ajusted to track needs.
Curious what Max Verstappen thinks of this car, as a seriously good Iracer as well.

you have to take into account that assetto corsa puts a huge emphasis on setups. it's literally italian term for "race setup"
the difference between a well set car and a stock one is immeasurable in ac. you will never come anything close to top times (and even have a feel for the car) if you don't customize settings in ac, and to be honest, f1 car cannot be driven on its sheer limits without changes on it being made. that's how it works in real life, so ac's comprehensive setup options definitely win that aspect

I am not very knowledgeable about how to set-up the cars in Assetto Corsa, but when I jump into an F1, the first thing I do to have a more "real" feel is to lower the front wing downforce and making the downforce higher in the rear wing.
That way the car won't oversteer that much and it will not overheat the tyres that easily.
Great overview, and agreed on some AC kerb limitations. Also, MP4-13 rF2 mentioned at the end was by us :)

That W12 on iracing is just amazingly natural to drive. The best formula car I’ve driven. It feels so balanced but hard to go really quick.
To be fair, it's not like anyone expected the RSS formula to be too close to the W12. There is bound to be a large difference between estimated data done through almost guesswork and real life data given to the developer by the actual F1 team.
Gamer Muscle goes around telling everybody how miles ahead the RSS is of the W12 on iracing... So there is him lol

True one is a free mod in a cheap game the other is an official car in an overpriced game. But having official data sent to you doesnt mean much because sims have been getting that for a decade now and still do a lot of sucky suck. So we cant really know which one is more real, only ppl who can tell are the ones who drove a real f1.
It's not like iR's W12 is accurate either way. F1 teams themselves very likely don't have enough time to properly correlate their sim tires, and you can visibly see the roll stiffness is off on the iR car, so I would not completely buy into the hype.
Better than RSS, sure, likely. RSS has never made particularly accurate open wheel cars.

If you haven't tried the F1 cars in Automobilista or Automobilista 2, you're missing out. Any one of the many generations available is amazing.
Which of the two is better in your opinion? I've been holding off on AMS2 because a lot of people say it's just 'off' because it inherited the physics from PC2. Personally, I absolutely love the physics and FFB of AMS1, it just feels way better than Assetto Corsa to me.
@@stupidrainbo in my experience, the latest update for 2 made it very similar to how 1 feels. I'm not quite sure of which one feels better, it's really close. But the content and server accessibility in 2 makes me think that it might be better overall.

@@martingaray14 actually the Formula Ultimate is not comparable at this state cause the wobbling suspension is still too present, meanwhile the latest old indycar release is really great. they need to rework the setup of the old cars cause they are really outdated.

I have found that content creators who generally think AC has the best force feedback, don't drive in real life. Their minds can't fill the gaps that not having g forces leaves, but if you drive everyday in real life, you're already mentally calibrated to adjust to g forces even if you don't feel them. they really need those extra forces just to receive the information that's already incredibly obvious to a person who drives, every single day.
Shocking ammount of sim racing creators literally don't own a car or a license and compare all their aim experience to the 1 track day they got invited to lol

im wondering what your ffb settings look like for ac. there are so many settings that can make it terrible if not correct. i rarely hear people say the at the limit feedback is vague
iRacing also had the McLaren you spoke of. A lot of fun to drive.
This mercedes on iRacing is amazing. Easy to drive, extremely hard to master.
Just when you nail a lap you look and youre still seconds off pace.
Extracting every tenths out of that car is a challenge and its what is going to be so interesting in that series, the skill cap of the car.
And this is in a simulator. A true testament to the balls F1 drivers have pushing these things to the absolute ragged edge and getting the times they do.
With Mercedes F1 car being released this week, the physics, aero, tires models will dramatically improve now as Mercedes is helping them also with that department.

I swear I remember reading (or hearing) that we're also going to see the new 2022 Mercedes in iRacing sometime next year. That'll be amazing. Now, if only iRacing can get Red Bull / Honda, McLaren, and Ferrari to sign on.

Another great vid man! Since ive increased the side accel forces/g-forces in BeamNG to 200% (vanilla is a max of 20% but makes is way less tight and detailed especially when the wheel is centered) ive been longing for a well modeled F1 car so that i can compare it to these legends.
Why would you enable accel force? Isn't it just to simulate the G forces on the driver? That wouldnt be realistic.
@@NicOz42 thats what its for, to communicate what the rest of the car is doing, not only the front wheels. Id argue its more realistic to get a feel for what the whole car is doing.

Well with Merc providing 30,000 data channels...Anthony Davidson doing months of testing on the platform and engineers overlaying real data with sim to get within 1% ...

Hopefully such dedication will be translated into other Formula 1 related games to improve drastically as well.
They're probably just looking at average lateral G in sustained cornering to get that %. The dynamic roll stiffness is probably 50%+ off for one and it's easy to see the transient is off in entry, so if you do a real analysis of the car you'll start running into large discrepancies I think. Manufacturer sims don't get as close as everyone is making it sound like iR got, and iR has a lot more fundamental issues with modeling than those.
As much hate as F1 from codemasters gets (most of that well deserved due to lackluster physics+ffb) it's still provides most immersive all-around F1 racing experience (teams, strategies, different tyres, weather changes, driver names, safety car / vsc)
its a great entry game, because its difficult enough when you start turning assits off that when you play a legit sim your not completely blindsided

4 years ago I paid to drive an F1 car at Catalunya Spain and this Mercedes on iracing is the first sim F1 car I've driven that feels like real life. Its great!
How did you manage to do that? And how much did it cost, if you're willing/allowed to share that info?

@@FreakCanal you did not read correctly. I drove both F1 and F2 car. And yes very different. F2 was 400 hp and 500 kg, so 800 hp per ton and F1 car was 700 hp and 650 kg so about 1100 hp per ton. The grip from the areo on the F1 was insane

This is exactly why saying the official F1 game does not have the best physics because it needs to be accessible for everyone is complete bullshit. Good physics means it is easier to drive because it gets way more intuitive.

Not to mention, that even the REAL F1 DRIVERS complained that the OFFICIALLY LICENCED F1 GAME by Codemasters is far too difficult to drive and has a massive lack of grip, downforce and traction.

Shit take the only ppl who know about good physics are the ones who drove a real f1. Not you. Also how does your argument make sense when AC is the hardest one to drive. Wouldnt that make AC one beat the iRacing one which the guy in the video says its more intuitive?
@@Moonshine1147 Russell mentioned in a video that he drives with ABS on for more realism.
There are a few points that need to be made here: 1) the RSS car is a creation of a modding company with the intention not to make it identical but as a platform that resembles this year's cars. 2) iRacing worked internally with Mercedes with their data to create this car, so it's many many times more detailed and precisely fine tuned.
Then, there's another key point to be made. Already, drivers are matching Hamilton's qualifying times on iRacing, which is a dead giveaway that this car is made to be approachable by sim racers with as broad skill range as possible. That by default means it's easier to drive, the aero is more prominent and the corrections in throttle/steering on curbs and bumps tend to be less extreme.
So in summary, both aren't that "close" to being realistic, while the W12 is tailor made by MB, I don't see why the RSS with a proper setup wouldn't be able to match the iRacing experience (obviously the tire model is a limiting factor, while I find the FFB on the RSS quite detailed imo)
Having, like all of us, never driven an F1 car, I can’t comment on the realism.
The fact that sim racers are matching Hamilton’s time doesn’t mean it’s not realistic. By this point, it’s safe to assume that some sim racers have turned more laps in this car than Hamilton ever will. They probably have more laps on a given track than Hamilton ever will. But most importantly, they can push harder and harder each lap with the fear of dying.
In identical conditions, the sim should be faster because it removes the very real fear of dying.
Sim racers don't have to deal with G forces or the risk of dying, of course they can get close to or match Hamilton's lap times. I personally cant, and I've been sim racing for years.
Simracing laps can be run at completely different weather and track conditions. Comparing the lap times with different conditions doesnt make any sense.
What part of the AC tire model is a limiting factor compared to iR? Most North American team sim models are built with vanilla AC to begin with.
Oh can you imagine a full grid of manufacturers In iRacing? That would be something.
Interesting video, but have to say the AC RSS W12 is so so much more fun to drive at the limit, but I race the iRacing w12 for the online competition. Its a shame AC is not popular but it was up to them not to make a competitive online system. One day we will get the best of both worlds fingers crossed.

Good comparison. But let's be honest, it's still pretty impressive that there's even a comparison to begin with. RSS are modders while the iracing W12 was made with Mercedes F1 team themselves helping the iracing team. To me it's still impressive that a fan made mod can even be compared to the closest we can get to "the real thing".

Iracing seems way too forgiving with hitting curbs and gravel. At one point you braled while having two tires compleatly on the ralttle-curb without any more braking distance
I dont have any simracing experience, but this is what I thought after watching this video: for me as someone from the outside, Asseto would have left a more "real" impression I guess.

Ok so now go back and watch some real F1 races from this year and see how many times the real drivers in the real world actually brake on the curbs and sometimes even kick up dust from hitting the grass.
IMO this has been the biggest problem with sims and in particular F1 cars in sims and Codemasters. They over do the difficulty of the way the car drives because they are “supposed” to be the hardest cars cars to drive which they are but only if you are pushing them to the absolute limit. Not everytime you drop a wheel on the grass or heaven forbid touch a curb.
The problem with plebs online and especially people who don’t even have iRacing saying that it isn’t or looks unrealistic is that Mercedes themselves and James Vowels (Technical race director of AMG F1 Merc) has been working closely with iRacing over the last 12mths to make this the closest representation possible of the real world car. So I think it’s a pretty big call to say that Janes Vowels and Merc have screwed this up and don’t have any idea of “how it really should be” 🤔

I find you gotta turn down the steering assistance in the RSS Formula Hybrid cars to get good feeling at low speeds.

So he basically states he hates driving anything in AC and doesn’t spend time with it. He clearly likes to drive in IR so he knows the sim and how to set up cars for success in it. Basically makes anything he says about comparing the two sims void and makes the entire point of the mute. AC was not going to get a fair opportunity. He also leaves out the fact that if you cancel you Iracing subscription you lose the car, it’s 4X as expensive as the AC version.

the steering gets hard at highspeeds following the downforce increasement. The massive 3000kg of downforce and the agressive suspension geometry (toe, camber) and the massive grip makes the steering wheel much heavier. In normal cars, as fast as you are, as much the steering wheel gets lighter, in formula cars it happens, until the downforce kicks...
Is the AC one a mod? Because I have it on console, however you obviously can’t mod it on console. Are there many F1 cars on console for AC?

AC is still king. iRacings physics have never been quite right and the price you pay for what you get is completely not worth it at all.

The fact your hotlap in iRacing was only .7 seconds slower than the one of Hamilton means the car is way to forgiving and easy to drive. That shouldn’t happen

Yeah, Ermin is at least 2 seconds/lap faster than Hamilton. Nerf the real world car, it's *clearly* too forgiving.

I don't get the hype about the RSS Hybrid, it's vague on the limit and numb in slow speed, even the RSS F2 car feels better. I much prefer the SF70H which is original content in AC and feels very much like the W12 in iRacing. Also the default settings in AC are just noise. Set ABS, kerb and road to 0 and increase slip effect to a level you enjoy and have at it.
AC looks good and feels better but the crash physics of iracing w12 looks good

I think rear aero on this RSS car is way lower than previous cars. You should try ones from 2017 they are on rails so I don't think it's really AC problem.
The reaction on the kerbs is an AC problem. Only mapping one contact point is the issue here. That's a fundamental, baked-in limitation of the game.

Brother, I love your content, but that lap in AC was bad, turn 5 and 6 almost made me cry when you downshifted to 4th gear. I dont own iRacing but from all I have seen so far, that W12 look amazing, something I look forward to try as soon as my wallet lets me. Just to finish, if you dont like to drive in AC, just don't do it.
I would have preferred to see it driven in proper sim mode, ie in the cockpit view, as the review is about simulation.
I assume it was and this was just the replay. iRacing doesn't support other driving views.
@@worldofradiocontrol10 iRacing actually supports any driving view you want in a test drive. Its only locked to cockpit in the official races (and locked by default when hosting a lobby).

IR over AC for ffb? Hard disagree. Seems like you might need to tune your settings more. AC has so much more detail. Honestly it’s not even close for me. The newest iRacing update has helped but it’s still not as good overall. I never spin in AC and race online all the time. The FFB makes it so easy. iRacing has always been more vague and lifeless, it’s literally the primary reputation it has. Also why people mod the FFB in iRacing with irFFB. Not many people modding AC for FFB ;)
Both are great and do things good/bad, but no way does Assetto lose to iRacing in terms of FFB and vehicle dynamics. Now excuse me while I go download that Merc and try it out!

AC has FFB tweaks in CSP to make it better especially for DD wheels where it is quite rubbery and lifeless.
I race iracing but with irffb all the time. Default is terrible and you can spin when not feeling the car go. With irffb I can balance the car on the brake and throttle and hardly ever spin.
are you running a 20nm+ direct drive wheel set up correctly? if not i dont think you can criticise ffb of either game cause that’s on your end

Which sim is overall best for a newer racer?
both are actually great since both have tons of content. however iracing is MUCH more expensive to get into. AC is better for newer people. oh and here's a tip start at something slow and easy. don't go with something like an F1 car.
If you want to try wide range of >100 cars on numerous tracks, and also install mods, grab AC and pay once. There are online servers, but no rating systems. If you need iRacing online system, pay monthly rent and have 5 cars and 5 tracks, and pay for each additional car or track almost the same price that you would pay for AC on sale.
If you want to drive a lot of cars on a lot of tracks, AC. If you want to race other people at or near your skill level, iRacing.

You can have a A license in road in a week just stay in the back and don't wreck at all cost don't race anybody. if you do 5 Ox races in each level you will have it fast. you only need 4.0 to go to the next level and when you start that next level you have 3.5 so about 5 races and you will get the O.5 to move up
Just to put it out there. AC's car was made by a fan on their modding website, now Iracing, their own dev team created it.

tbh for normall people iRacing might be to their liking but the fact is, just like in IRL, not anyone can just go into a F1 car. so i think the AC one is better for the actual F1 drivers since a real F1 car has very little throttle travel and revs up insanely fast which might of bin the reason you lost control so easily.
Hold on this is not even a comparison iracing got the full blown package from Mercedes with data and everything and assetto got rss mod, that not even close to comparing those 2 games. Imo
