  • This project is is a garden makeover for our friend. She wanted raised beds in her backyard to grow vegetables. Since she is a busy woman, she needs the vegetable garden to be low maintenance. That means drip irrigation in place, plants that are hardy, disease resistance and don't require daily maintenance. Scroll down for lists of items used in this project. Go to Husbandtofeed.com for extended list of items we use in our gardening-cooking-fitness homelife.
For the raised bed, we use Redwood 2" planks, 12" high. and Planter Wall Blocks to put the box together without screws. This method is simple to do if you don't know how to or don't have the tools to do woodworking. Simply ask the construction store (Home Depot or Lowes) to cut the planks to the lengths you need, and fit them to the corner blocks. You have to do a little more calculation to compensate the thickness of the corner block to get the final box dimension you need. Once you see the blocks in person, it will make sense.
For the soil, since this is a quick project and we want to make it as simple as possible for her, we bought ready-mix soil for raised bed, plus some manures. The height of the box is not that deep anyway, at 10-11" it is the planting depths for most veggies already. I meant to say, we don't need fillers.
She loves the arch we have at home, where passionfruit grows happily over it, and wanted one too. We designed the two beds to flank the arch and measured the distance of the feet of the arch to slip perfectly into the center holes of the corner blocks.
Drip irrigation is simple for the beds as they are not that big. I am partial for using hose emitter with 6" spacing with 1/4" drip valve, and that's what we installed for her.
As for the veggies, we started with a list of vegetables she commonly use to cook and go from there. We planted the main vegetables on her list plus companion and bait plants. So there are kale, lettuce, swiss chards, garlic, onion, radish, beets, nasturtiums, marigold, mint, etc.
I would say the hardest part of the project is leveling the ground. There are huge chunks of old tree roots close to the surface of the ground, making the ground uneven. Otherwise, it was a fun project doing it together with friends :)
