    This is why understanding french is so frustrating. I can read books but spoken french is like listening to teenagers speak english. It's brutal and changes where you are.

      The good news is - TYPICALLY the more important a statement is, the more likely someone is to speak clearly and properly instead of talking like someone who just rode in on the short bus.

      C1 is a very solid level. But you are right - it's like everything we are taught about another language is basically BS.
      It's like having extensive knowledge of something that is basically useless.
      My level of French is A2 or maybe B1 (on a good day) but I keep thinking, is this even worth it?

    I just realised about 5 minutes ago, that all this effort French puts into assigning masculine or feminine gender to non-sexual objects is completely pointless. I mean consider the sentence "The child is raising her hand." In English it's obvious that the child raising a hand is a girl because the pronoun "her" makes it so. But in French, this sentence translates to "L'énfant lève sa main." Now the pronoun, "sa" is feminine, but that's not because it's a girl raising a hand, instead the pronoun "sa" is used because its antecedent, "main", is designated (for whatever reason god only knows) feminine. So, "L'énfant lève sa main." is the same whether the child raising a hand is a boy or a girl, and can only be translated into English without knowing the context, as "The child is raising *its* hand," because there's no way of knowing from the French version of this sentence what the sex of the child raising his or her hand is. I'm sorry, but French (and possibly/probably all languages that designate gender to non-sexual things) is an inferior language to English.
    And while I'm on a roll, I wish teachers of French would make it clear very early on to their students that French liaison is pretty much in the eye of the beholder. Liaison is the rule for pronouncing the final consonant of a word when the following word starts with vowel. But so many native French speakers don't bother to follow it. So you'll have many French people not bothering to pronounce the final t of est in, for example, "est encore". A lot of students like me will be wondering what exactly is the rule for pronouncing the final consonant of words because there seems to be so much variation, when the truth is it's up to the speaker whether or not to use liaison, i.e. it's not a rule set in concrete.

      @AxoKandPogo 11 місяців тому

      I'm not going to contradict you, French is indeed a complicated language and the genre is a little useless. But in my opinion, the beauty of this language also comes from there and millions of possibilities to make a sentence. Let's move on. I just inform you that in "L’enfant lève sa main" the word "sa" is not feminine for nothing... and yes we can't know if it's an eraser or a woman but in the books it adds a lot of suspense! The word "sa" means, the child's hand UNE hand therefore female then SA.
      I think yes, English is simpler. An easy language to learn. But French has much more vocabulary, more determinant, conjugation, time, fashion, grammar rule... in conclusion much more possibilities. Each of his words has at least two synonyms. All the opposite... this language is simply magnificent

    • @PeterFraser-hp3rs
      @PeterFraser-hp3rs 11 місяців тому

      @@AxoKandPogo I actually don't agree with myself. There's nothing "inferior" about French. I get frustrated sometimes trying to learn the language and was just letting off some steam. But every language has its quirks and idioms; they're not defects -- they add a unique charm, character and flavour to a language.
