NINTENDO Games on QUEST?! VR Emulation is CRAZY! // CitraVR Quest 3 Gameplay

- CitraVR is a brand new Quest application that allows you to play 3DS games inside your VR headset whilst retaining the 3D effect, meaning you can play VR Zelda on a HUGE 3D screen inside your Quest 2, Quest 3 or Quest Pro! This incredible app just launched and it's completely free to use, you just need to seek out the 3DS roms/games yourself as it obviously doesn't come with anything pre-installed (those Nintendo lawyers would come knocking so damn fast!!!). CitraVR is a new VR version of the existing Citra 3DS emulator, ported onto the Quest family of devices by solo developer Amanda Watson, and it really is the most impressive way to play 3DS games IF you're happy to tinker to get the best settings. Not every 3DS game runs perfectly but the majority work well if you're willing to drop the internal resolution down to something more manageable for the Quest hardware, you can even use touch controllers to play these games and the touch screen functions with point and click actions... honestly VR emulation / VR emulators are getting CRAZY!
Download CitraVR here: github.com/amw...
All VR 3DS gameplay / CitraVR Quest 3 gameplay was captured natively inside the Quest 3 headset and represents the current state of the app when playing these games showcased (New Super Mario Bros 2, LEGO The Lord of The Rings, Mario Kart 7 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)

Holy shit this absolutely rules, how did I miss it? Thank you for all your emulation content, Benjo. It's one of my favourite parts of the channel. ❤
Not really sure what's with the rude comments? I appreciate the showcase, Beardo! I love your content! Thank you for sharing your VR endeavors! Appreciate the variety!
I don't know why but I've noticed that it's always the first few comments are a couple of angry basement dwellers. It never fails. 😂
Probably nintendo fan chuds complaining about "muh roms!!!!!!!! copyright laws!!!!!!!1!!!"
Rude comments are from Nintendo
Don't forget to change the Graphic API to Vulcan or Open GL, depends on the game you are playing. Makes a huge difference in perfomance.
More Emulation in VR Please! 🥰
Thanks Benjo! Just FWIW various Citra community and Flat2VR community members are helping Amanda with aspects of the project that aren't specifically code related, like testing, and other generalist things (like support, documentation etc)
Thanks for this video. I've been unable to find out what the default controller bindings are. Is there a button or combination of buttons that allow you to exit a rom and get back to the Citra VR app? Or do you just need to close Citra VR and then restart it when you want to play a different game?
Oh man, time to go through TooT again! In 3D! On a huge screen!
toot lol
Passthrough mode on the Q3 is very resources intensive. Switching to a virtual environment would likely improve the emulator performance.
Don't worry about what other VR youtubers do. I know you're the only VR youtuber I watch.
It's okay to watch other VR youtubers.
Also, regarding shader building. Most times you can find pre-built shaders online, which will help with performance and your gamepllay experience 🙂
Nice, didn't know it was available. If I remember correctly PS3 emu Imtried will download them in-app
The lagging is due to shaders compilation. A known issue with Citra. After a while it’s all good.
holy smokes its getting good in vr now!
I loved the 3DS. This video has pushed me to buy a quest.
you'll probably get better performance by turning off passthrough. I prefer to play Citra VR that way too and find it less distracting.
Strange that you can remap to controller but not remap the touch controllers 🤔 Looks great though 😀
wind waker vr was and is still one of my fav vr experiences since 2016, it was nearly flawless. i gotta try this.
I need to look into this!
Wind waker vr was very nice I agree. Art style looked perfect in vr. I think Nintendo games in general look the best in that format.
@@venjachi7162 i liked mario galaxy 2 vr also but it was a bit janky. it's been years since I played it maybe I'll try again.
@@OverbiteGames dang i missed the controvery, why the heck would people delete their guides??
@@OverbiteGames well said. yup sounds like reddit. always finding new ways to be offended. thanks for the rundown.
Spend 40 bucks on an awesome 8bitdo bluetoth and use that gamepad instead for sure./ if u can afford quest u can afford 8bitdo gamepad for it! Also works great with Tetris effect! tetris efect sucks donley balls with the touch contrllers but grerat with d pad
I've been messing with this off and on since release. I'm really enjoying it so far! Excellent video!! 👊🏻🍺
How do you resize the top window? I can move it but not resize it. Also thanks so much for doing this because you're the first I saw talk about it (sub'd!) and I installed and used it well on my Quest 2! Not sure why you need Virtual Desktop though as you install the ROMS directly on your HMD (or at least I did). Runs ok on Quest 2 and I've lowered the graphics to x1 for better results. Its a touch soft at lower res but its like playing on a 40+ inch 3D TV rather than a tiny 3DS!
Why not just play on a tv lol it’s the same thing and you won’t have to wear that headset
Even if you own an old 3D T.V., you can’t play 3DS games utilizing the 3D.
Apparently this can look better than it ever did on the 3DS.
No 3D on regular TV 😂
Does it work well with Quest2? Ive been waiting for something like a native DolphinVR and CitraVR for so long
yes, as long as you go into graphics settings and bring internal resolution to something like 2x rather than whatever crazy high resolution automatic is going for. Runs pretty great, especially after shaders are compiled. MK7, NSMB2, ZELDA OOT, Metroid Samus Returns all tested and running great on mine
@@VRnamekthank you for answering this
I've been holding off on a quest 3 (had the 1 & 2 on launch day) but a lot of the "non main quest" media has me really tempted (this, xbox game pass, dr. Beef game ports)
dr beef ports are so good
I have a Vive EXR and have been playing Citra+ on it over Virtual Desktop. You can get in in full steroscopic view by using the SBS (side by side) option in the PC emulator and it looks fantastic--3DS games in full HD resolution and fully 3D. It's cool they made it work standalone, would love to see that on Vive someday, but this works well enough for now.
Now we need some mods to bring 6DoF gameplay into this library...
Thanks for the tip, I guess it would work with big screen beyond as well then. What would be really cool is if it would somehow work with sonys new 3d monitor
Doesn't SBS cut the 3D resolution in half? Not sure how it works on a VR headset but on a 3D TV or monitor I'm pretty sure side-by-side is not optimal. The prefered method would be to use "frame sequential" I think it's called which is the native format for 3DTVs, 3D blu-ray, and old 3D games (Nvidia 3D Vision or PS3 for example).
I don't have a VR headset but have a 3D display and would love to use Citra in 3D but not if I have to use SBS, because I know that doesn't look good on my display. I tried to find out if Citra on PC can be made to output the 3D in the "3D Vision" format but couldn't find anything about it sadly.
@@arthur78 you can set the resolution of the panels to the headset resolution, so it's not an issue. :D
The only downside to using a Bluetooth controller is that you need the Quest controllers to tap options on the touch screen. Not a big deal for some games, but a bit of a drag for others!
So much fun - I ended up playing Donkey Kong Country for hours last night, for the first time in years!
How did it perform for you? It was a bit choppy for me but I'm sure with some tweaking it would run very well.
@@Aaron-p8e9r It got much better after I played for 10-15 mins. I've got the option enabled to cache textures and stuff to disk, so that probably explains it. Unless it's my imagination, re-launching the same game retains the boost, so you just have to give it a while to settle in, basically. I'm running on Quest 2 at 2x upscale and OpenGL renderer.
Oh wow. That's AWESOME!!! Gimme, gimme, gimme!!!
But I have a question: Graven is about to go live - basically a low polly, low texture Hexen game. (remind me a lot of Ancient Dungeon but better) It's written in Unreal engine 4. PC only. Is there a way to get a game like this and basically Doom 3 it? So, using the UEVR and dling this game to the quest 3, make it run natively off the quest 3? So PC required for initial upload of files but then no pc required to play going forward? *Bomb dropping sound effect with explosion*!
Omg, I'd love Luigi's Mansion 3DS games on this! Especially if it is emulating the 3D!
Don't matter how late you think you are on the show, regarding the 3DS emulator here, your videos are just so good and enjoyable, I'd rather wait for you to cover this than watch other content creators. Keep it up! 🤜🤛
Wow this is amazing, I love the 3DS and having it in VR is perfect.
very awesome!! so when not recording/streaming the gameplay, do you still keep it at 2x resolution?
The issue is the more people show this sort of thing on youtube the more likely Nintendo's legal division is going to crush it and remove any access to it. Its a double edge sword, I get to see and then try out awesome stuff knowing it probably has a short shelf life.
I'm assuming you can just connect and map a game controller to play with instead of the quest controllers?
rip Citra
Goddamn man, green shell sniper.
I've got the Quest 3 in my Amazon cart, on the fence at this point.
I personally love my quest. I was skeptical coming from PCVR but i mean its just fantastic. Of course, make sure you budget for it and always make good financial decisions
"i dont care about the wheels" "oh dont put me in a bloody monster truck" lolll
ceiling screens is great to play in bed before sleep
Nah.. I'll take my Vankyo Burger over this.
I was playing pokemon sun on this it was so cool
For the Retro old schol gamer slie me, go ahead and setup the Virtual Boy emulator, very impressive! The wario game is the best one
Be looking for this. It's why i bought a 512 gb quest 3 co's you need all the space you can get with all the cool stuff you can do on the thing and 128 gb just would be full up in no time at all. Plus got 6 months quest+ subscription to get me started with games which was nice. I was broke after spending £630 on the thing lol Where do i get CitraVR sidequest?
You can connect USB-drives too
See, this is what PlayStation should do with their cinema mode on PS VR2 since we're not getting many AAA VR games/hybrids, and probably won't. The 3DS was doing this yonks ago for all games. Can't be difficult.
Would this be possible on the pico4 ?
Yes. Sidequest is where you can get it and sidequest runs on pico
Honestly, running Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart 7 should be enough to make people want this. Especially given that Ocarina of Time is amazing, and somehow looks way better on 3DS than I remember!
this absolutely rules,
While i typically think most influencer speak is garbage. This video is actually spot on.
Games like ocarina look fantastic on the 'auto' setting. Other games like mario 3d land need like the 2x res set, and the controls will need adjusted or a controller. Majora keeps crashing mine, but it might be my rom.
Will say the 3d at the default 50% is great. At 100% its just not right
Its just as simple as side quest to install, move your games over, and boom youre ready.
Anyway to leverage my PC instead to run citraVR? I mean I would love to play at 4x native instead...
Thanks
Listen, I'm still figuring out the arcade mod 🤣🤣🤣🤣...looks like theres another thing i will have to try
Is it available for pcvr?
Does this work on pico 4?
Looks fantastic. Can this be installed directly from the side quest app within the headset or does that need transferred over from sidequest on the pc?
bro there's no audio whenever i try to play a game and its so annoying any fixes???????
Hey, I just got to quest three and start all over all my games which game should I get first
Cool video...thanks 👍 Can the Quest controllers not be mapped?
Ben we need a live stream what’s been up buddy life been getting you so busy I can imagine
Really wish you would have showed us how to down load and put games in it.
How do you change size.of screen???
So glad Nintendo finally joined in on modern VR! 😉👍 First this, then Palworld. I do hope they're taking notes...
💀
what are the best settings for performance?
Change the API depending on games (Vulkan or Open GL), also if you don’t play in 3D you can go up to 4X resolution.
Hey you should totally send me a quest 2! Lol
no 3d mode
my screen is black when i load my games
Works with an Xbox controller
when trying to run a rom the screen remains blacks, do you know any solution or am I not doing something?
Roms probably not decrypted.
This is a brave video to post with how Nintendo is on youtube.
I need to try mgs3 like this
Do you have to own a 3ds
Nope
Nah you all good. legally Speaking the guys who run the sites with roms are the ones breaking the law. Download and play whatever you want brother
Not been able to transfer files since quest version 53, sidequest works when connected but I now get rift vr not compatible and a loading screen. I don't have a vr compatible pc or laptop atm. I never had these problems before it updated. Does anyone know a fix for this please?
You can transfer in sidequest. If that aslo doesn't work then you might have by accident hit no with permissions in headset once. Means you need to reset the whole headset .it happend to me by mistake aswell
I have two quest 2 headsets and problem is same in both. I also have developer mode on and set so it can ask everytime I use the cable, as I made that mistake when I first got them@@spidermonkeynr1
Haha, you're brave putting this video up!
Let's see how long Nintendo allows this to stay up for, lol!
Emulation is legal, mate.
@ThisisCitrus
I know it is... I do it more than most.
Just Nintendo is notorious for getting videos like this taken down.
I gotta get back to this!
That's awesome I'll try it out today
As cool as it is to have this, I really hope I don't get banned from Quest for emulating this
You'll be fine. Meta doesn't care what you put on your Quest
@@Bornheck
Thanks for the reassurance. I was concerned with being banned for piracy than just having it on there. Yes, I do own the games I downloaded.
He indeed came first
Does the pc version have 3d with vr?
it has stereoscopic 3d, you can play it with virtual desktop
lets see how long this video stays up. i mean it features mario, super easy way to get nintendo's legal team upset
That's not how copyright law works. Fair Use exists for youtube videos.
Nintendo doesn't like it when people stream their own games on nintendo's own hardware. let allow show how to emulate, because they see it as straight up piracy. why do you think when linus showed how to run emulation they blurred the games@@ThisisCitrus
If he bought the game, no law was broken
is there supposed to be a 3d level slider?
There is.
it's in the settings
👍🏿
Fire vid🔥
Please, do not upload Nintendo Copyrighted Content onto VRChat, because it would be very unfair if people ruined the gameplay of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Super Mario 64, and Donkey Kong Country. Rendering the games unplayable, because I could not play Ocarina of Time, and Donkey Kong Country properly with sword, hookshot physics, and parachute as to go into levels.
im new to the quest 3 would have appreciated an install guide ... thats me being just dumb!
You gotta learn! Part of the Android experience is
1st Google how to set quest in dev mode. Then Google how to install sidequest. And you good to go
thanks @@spidermonkeynr1
Keep your head still when youre talking, it gives me motion sickness, stop jerking your head around with every word I feel like I'm gonna puke
why you no run
I agree Yoshi is the correct choice
But why? For likes?
What do you mean why? You can play 3DS games at high resolution AND use the 3D function.
@@ThisisCitrus Ugh sorry, this comment was intended for a video of a dude wasting bread to make a fancy McNugget. My bad lol.
@@Tashyp Happens! All good!
Back to your old self, sh*tting on the capabilities of the Quest headsets.
dude is just being honest. even though the performance of quests standalone isn't as good as pcvr i still prefer it for the simplicity and comfort. no cords for me ever again.
I tried it on my Quest 3 today, and if anything he's overselling the performance here. For the best 3Ds games the load times and stuttering are awful, even with the settings turned right down for performance as mentioned and even with passthrough off (my understanding is that increases the clock speeds and performance considerably). Kid Icarus: Uprising and Streetfighter IV: 3D Edition were unplayable, even without the controller issues of the emulator.
@@Joric78 dang, that's a bummer. did you try ocarina? i have quest 2 but if it ain't great on q3 i prob won't even download it. keep in mind oot ran at 30fps on the 3ds.
@@yugdesiral Ocarina is fairly playable. Didn't notice any issues with the start anyway, but the cutscenes have plenty of stutter and audio clipping.
Why would anyone want to play this? We are supposed to ne going forward not backwards.I WANT AAA QUEST 3 GAMES FFS!!!!
*Raspberry*
People still like old games. Getting to play them on a big 3d screen sounds rad.
Plus I generally like Quest being more of an indie market. AAA companies tend to ruin everything they touch.
Old games don't stop being good because they're old. And people who like emulators running old games also like new games. It's not a zero sum/exclusive either/or
You’ve missed the point entirely. Don’t want to play roms on your HMD, then don’t. Point is this Citra port was made entirely by one person. Good luck saying the same for a AAA title that you want so bad but probably don’t want to pay 70+ for.
Why? Because it rules. Touch grass my man.
For me and many other VR enthusiasts, this is great news. For the most part standalone VR titles have been a disappointment (IMHO), however enjoying a game from the past in glorious VR has been fantastic (I'm talking Dr.Beef ports of HL, RTTCW and Doom3) - CitraVR is another superb nostalgia trip.
My main use of my Quest 2 and 3 is PCVR titles once again mainly mods, true standalone AAA titles would be nice; Asgard's Wrath 2 is good but still doesn't grab me in the way that a fully modded SkyrimVR played over Virtual Desktop does...
Misleading title. This is not really VR
Yes it is. It projects the 3D effect of the original hardware.
If you move your head, the perspective will shift. Like looking into a window, as he said.
Wdym? it literally runs completely on headset, it's a standalone VR emulator.
Thomas first think before you type
go play wind waker vr if you want 360 visuals, it's excellent. this looks pretty good but yeah would be nice if they had full vr.
@@yugdesiral windwaker vr?! How?
Incoming the virus that destroys their Quest 3. No thank you from me.
What are you on about?! This is a verified app from Sidequest. There is no need to worry about viruses unless you're referring to "getting roms," which will boil down to how careful you are when doing so if you're not dumping your own games from a hacked 3DS. 👊🏻🍺
herp a derp I don't unnnnnerstan games.
That sounds like a you problem
imagine writing a virus for quest 3
lol
