The root cause of the stress is the time management aspect of the early 1-2 seasons. Like I’m on the way over to Clint to pay him to upgrade my Axe to copper tier, and when I’m crossing the bridge to get to the western part of Pelican Town, I realise that I forgot to actually bringe the Axe with me, and so the walk home then back to Clint will cost me something like 2.5 hours.
The core motivation or goal, for me although I very much doubt I’m unique in this, is the desire to get my farm 100% Sprinklered. I want it largely Sprinklered from Summer day 2, almost completely Sprinklered from Fall day 1, and starting Winter day 1 I want to never have to use my Watering Can at all ever. That requires me to get the wealth snowball rolling early and fast.

One thing that really helped me enjoy the game was understanding how Mr. Barone intended the game to be played, he designed it with the intention that you do it however you want, take as long as you need. Want to spend all your time in the mines? 100% doable and there aren’t any negatives. Want to do only animals? You can. Just because you don’t do one thing or another, you’re not going to be punished. Everything is possible without something. Don’t wanna grow crops? The trading cart will probably sell it. things like that. The reason the town doesn’t age with the years is so you can take as long as you need. There’s no repercussions for building a coop on year 5 vs year 1. The game was designed to be slow and had things added (like the optional quests) for those of us who need more direction. It’s a rounded game for everyone who might like it.

There's nonsense in your claim about "spend all your time in mines" because there's obviously a limit of what players can do, since character passes out after 2am if awake, plus you get minus in your inventory from some NPC.

I have OCD, and this game does stress me if I play it without mods. One thing I wish ConcernedApe would just add to base is the ability to save at any time. I think it would help a lot of people de-escalate that feeling that they're going to miss out or lose something if they mess up. The ability to have multiple saves would be great too.
For single players, there are mods that I use to mitigate my stress-inducers, like one that lets you save at any time, and one that has cheats, so if you need an extra item, or to freeze time while you go through your checklist of things that you want done, or extra money- just give it to yourself; it's better than stressing. The time freeze, especially, is great because then I don't specifically worry about if I can get done or not.

  • @ZaItan1
    @ZaItan1 2 місяці тому +10

Time management anxiety induction is 100% a valid critique of this game. Whether it affects you as a player depends in part on your attitude, but game design has a lot to do with it too.
There is so much time-gated content. Clint closes at 4. Marnie's hours are even tighter. Crops and fish are season-bound, meaning you gotta wait a year for some to come back around. Many people stop playing before then. The game pushes you to make somewhat arbitrary goals for yourself, which are rewarding if done optimally, and punishing if not (you're forced to play another day/season/year).
You say there's no game over screen. Au contraire, on Fall 1 you might decide to buy hundreds of deluxe speed gro and pumpkins, intending to get 3 harvests. First harvest comes around. Oh no. It's Wednesday! And you forgot to re-purchase seeds from Pierre earlier. You are doomed to only 2 harvests and that fertilizer investment was a waste. For some players, this matters a lot; it's game over (try again). Sometimes it's not even about playing optimally, it's about chasing one maniacal gopher mini-objective after another.
@6:30 What??? YES, of course there are incentives to do specific things in video games. Sure you can do whatever you want, but certain actions and achievements result in progression and thrilling gameplay loops. Actions that result in nothing changing are disincentivized to help players discover the exciting stuff.

He fails to realise that the pixel grpahics are what makes stardew so accessible. High-quality FPS 60 games have A LOT of data and take a really good computer to run. Stardew Valley, despite having so much content, saves a lot of room and power with it's graphics. It also makes the art style really easy to mimic which is why there's so many amazing mods; you can put all your focus into the programming and make sprites in MS paint :3

Relatively new player here but absolutely glued to it.
I think the only legitimate things i have complaints about is how the relationships work.
I feel like based on a mixture of heart events other npcs should be able to grow into a relationship depending on heart event reactivity.
    Example: Clint, Penny, and Sam.
If you have penny at, say 6 hearts, itd act as a point where you can encourage her to ask out Sam where she'll then get a new schedule and whatnot.
Or you can discourage her or even ask her out yourself leading into her marriage candidacy. If she remains single you can then do clints heart event.
You can egg him on to confess to penny or tell him he needs to stop, if they get together it becomes a sort of awkward romance thing where they both get new schedules just like with Penny and Sam, or you can tell him to get over her because XYZ.
Then it gets into an entirely new mechanic and that is negative hearts, with negative hearts you get unique heart events that focus predominantly on more mean things.
If marry penny after talking down clint he then removes all his hearts and starts on his negative heart track. However if you marry penny before you get to the necessary heart events for clint he remains neutral as you were allegedly unaware of his admiration of her.
The simple inclusion of negative hearts, and negative heart events would add alot to the gameplay longterm, if you keep talking to everyone everyday but specifically single out Sebastian or something than hed grow some resentment.
It also make the game alot more dynamic which is never not fun.

a complaint that i, a person who absolutely loves this game, have that im surprised wasnt talked about here is the fact for a lot of the game you need a wiki or some outside source to find out anything like how are you supposed to know that artifact spots if you hoe it will cause stuff come out? either you will think its a decoration or pickaxe it for a lot of players, and a lot of fish you have no idea when, where or how to get only their names (which especially suck for the community center) and there are some choices you have to make without knowing what they mean like CC vs Joja or more importantly fruit bat vs mushroom cave (i say more importantly as it has a bigger impact the entire game and you dont really know the results before making the choice)
dont get me wrong a wiki can absolutely enhance a game but if its so heavily required that can be annoying for some people especially on consoles that you cant just alt tab to a wiki also there are some things that absolutely should be learned by the player on their own (like gift reactions) but not almost everything

I find the game immensely stressful and anxiety inducing because of how short the days are and I am constantly being rushed to make progress and if I forget one thing, I have to double back to the farm, and… Oh, the blacksmith JUST closed, no opening geodes or upgrading equipment for me.
I find I EITHER have to 100% focus on raising stats OR the social life, since trying to mix and match means I can’t even FIND all of the villagers, then I didn’t even cut down any trees, break rocks, etc.
Or if you have a request with a specific NPC, it’s next to impossible to FIND the NPC without using the Wikia, which I was trying my hardest to avoid doing for my first playthrough.
I literally had to restart the day I was on over 100 times because I just WASTED the day trying to do something, and then I had to redo the essentials tasks (petting my dog, watering my crops, harvesting any ready ones, put a couple into storage in case anyone needs them, sell the rest, etc) and quite often it wasn’t until 3pm that I could even LEAVE the farm by which point I physically cannot go to the blacksmith before they close and it’s just SO stressful.

You should just play at your pace instead of trying to maximize everything, it's fine if you do certain things late in the game. @@MalachiLperI do think the early game would be much less stress-inducing, if it was more constrained by Energy and less constrained by time. Like if the player character could walk 10% faster always, and the days were 2.5 or even just 2 minutes longer. And if Clint and Pierre and maybe Willy too kept their respective shops open just 1 in-game hour longer. When you screw up, find out you’ve walked to a place without bringing the critical item you need, you lose *SO* much time and it feels really bad.
I also think the starting backpack size is too harsh. I think it should start with 14 slots, first upgrade adds 12 more, second adds 10 more, so you still end with 36. Inventory management is frustrating and stressful, and the only way to escape that is to hustle hard for more coin, which is the root source of stress.

  • @GravityBouncer
    @GravityBouncer 2 місяці тому +1

I’ve been binging this game like crazy and have been enjoying it way more than i thought i would. however, i do think there are some valid criticisms with the time system and friend system.
i don’t think the time system is a problem in that it exists, i think it’s a problem in that everything else is on a sort of timer. people’s schedules are cool as a concept, but you don’t know said schedules unless you’re actively looking a ton of things up. sure they’re only simple consequences like when Marine and Robin disappear before a time you thought they’d be there. but i feel the limitations are there to add “soul” to these characters, like they’re moving around existing. but it kinda doesn’t convey that since they do the same thing every week, and say the same things all the time. it just feels like an inconvenience when you’re trying to plan your days. speaking of:
the “stress” play style makes sense. people are gonna want to maximize what they can do in a day, or a season, or a year. it really isn’t defeating the purpose of the game when the game gives you the limitation of a timer i think. if the game was truly just meant to be taken slow and at your own pace, the time limitation would be much broader and your character would move faster. but as it stands, your character is very slow without buffs (that you don’t get for a bit) or a horse, which even then isn’t the fastest thing around. the timer’s speed i believe is there to create a tension, same with the 2 am issue.
the fact that a player can’t sacrifice energy and health to stay up late a couple nights is pretty limiting as well. not to mention when you’re punished for it with a money loss too, as if the energy nerf wasn’t enough already. this does make people play around a specifc time frame. even if it’s as simple as missing a seasonal fish that you’ll have to wait another year to attempt, i do wish that there was a bit more control over when you slept to create a dynamic of resource allocating.
idk rant over, overall I do think people who play stardew trying to maximize their time isn’t really a strange concept. if other people take the game very slow, that’s how they feel it’s intended to be played. many others view resource management games like this tho as more of a challenge rather than a cozy game. after all the combat isn’t very… intuitive and the relationship system is very bare bones. so many people instead opt for unlocks and progression as their main form of fun, rather than sitting back and slowly going thru each of the days. that’s my opinion anyway!

  • @SlyPearTree
    @SlyPearTree 2 місяці тому +4

I understand the stress part but it's a personality thing, not a flaw in the game. I have thousands of hours in the game and I'm still constantly telling myself that it's okay that I failed a quest, did not plant everything I wanted of day one of the month, or do not have all it takes to upgrade my watering can when it's going to rain the next day. The worst penalty in the game for "failing" at something is having to wait a bit before being able to try again.
Mods are a good way to reduce things some might find stressful, I used the following for that: UIInfosuite2, Automate, CJBCheatsMenu. UIInfosuite2 let me see what I planted and how much time left for them to grow, also how much time for a machine to be done, price of items in inventory (which can now partly be done with a book in 1.6), automate let you automate things like you can put a chest next to a mayonnaise machine and put the eggs in it so the machine automatically process them one after the other. I use CJBCheatMenu to cheat at fishing, i set it for instant catch but not instant bites. I did instant bites at first and one hit kills but found that making the game that less stressful made it less enjoyable for me.

For me the worst part is relationships. I don't have any urge to talk or gift presents to most of the npc. I also hate how it seems nobody ever works. Especially adventurers guild. Very annoying. Not going to romance anyone, but candidates kinda suck. They all look and act like kids. All the good ones are not available, I just don't understand why if romance is part of the game.
Another thing is grinding. But i know its optional and our fault we grind so much both being perfectionists. Hope to get to more relaxed gameplay once more things are automated.

I think that the relationship system in SV is pretty good, because no one IRL will instantly love you just because you appeared out of nowhere. Having to talk to the NPCs to gain their friendship feels realistic (something funny you can do is talk to the NPCs during the flower dance until their friendship raises enough for you to be able to dance with them... kinda creepy tho), since to become friends with someone you actually have to learn what they like and even give them gifts if you want to show that friendship. That's something that makes me like the game, since I actually have to put effort into making them like me (Sebastian and Elliott feels like the hardest of them all, since they stay locked up inside their house and they don't like anything that's not fancy-).

But for a while, I kept up with my expectations of my progress. I honestly stopped playing after trying to get to skull caverns floor 100 and just get stopped by time. It felt like the game saying "Ha, too slow!". Kind of killed the magic. Only later did I find out staircases exist 😅.

I enjoy Stardew and spent many hours in it but saying there is no time-related stuff in it is not true at all. Requests expire fast, you have to collect stuff for community centre and that stuff is season-limited, and you have to achieve certain heights to not disappoint your grampa after first 3 years or so (I played a lot when SV came out but after that I just start new saves from time to time and chill in them so don't really remember that part with grampa's spirit much as I usually just don't get to it anymore). Businesses close at certain time, you move slowly, days are limited in time, you can really feel it esp in Skull cave where you have limited time to go thru the floors. Personally I didn't feel stressed as I am more of a chill player but can totally see why ppl can be stressed in it. There's so much to do and the game totally does make you feel like you better speed up or else. Tbh I just don't do requests at all to not stress myself and do foraging or fishing lifestyle playthroughs, creating new save files for freshness. Planting a huge potato field for max profits just feels like a nightmare to me (that's what my bf did early game when we both just got it years ago. He was all focused on money money money and got burnt out quickly while I continued playing)

I can at times feel stressed and overwhelmed by the game even though I love it. It's probably my second favorite game of all time (right under Deltarune). But the reason I think people become stressed by it is not by anything that the game does or because they're greedy. Instead it's because of the importance our society places on money and the human desire to lead a fulfilling life. You might wonder what that has to do with a videogame, but I think that because these two things run so deep (you need money to live and be comfortable, you have limited time before you die) without even thinking about it consciously they roll over into the simulated life.

Might stupid but very annoying is when I "accidentally" raise the affection of townspeople the the next day I got shoved by countless consecutive cutscenes and it really breaks the immersion, especially if they're contradict to each others.
But the game is generally stressful. No way this is chill game. You can try to be chill, but that's not how the game designed to be. Each day is only consisted of 15 minutes, item prices are quite expensive and hard to get materials, missable interaction and dialogues, on top of that Granpa visits literally after 2 years which basically to 'inspect' your progress.
It can be solved by gatekeeping contents. For example year one is only able to do A, year two you can now do B, etc so there's no sense of urgency and rushing everything in 2 years just so you can chill afterwards (you won't). Limit cutscene shown in the game to 2 per days. So player always looking forward to move to next day. Also to keep consistency.
Delay Granpa visit to only when you summon is also a must if you want the game to be chill. Regardless of what granpa said to you on his visit, it's still quite stressful experience because those mechanics imply you will be judged based on your achievements for the past 2 years.

Each still always have its own meaning. You can still be happy even if you're losing, but you will still feel inferior to the winning side. That's how the competition is designed.
Why do I'm stressing over what Granpa says? Because that's what the game intended. As I said, you can be as chill as you want. The game facilitate you, even if you do nothing, Granpa still emphasized that what matters the most is your happiness. But deep down, you know that's not what it meant to be. You will still get better response if you make Grandpa proud. You even get statue of perfection as prove of your hardwork.

Stardew is a great game, but it certainly has downsides. For the first year, it's the least chill of all the chill farming games. You gotta power level your fishing skill high to get that octopus, that only spawns on rainy summer nights, and there are some years where that might never even happen, and you probably don't even know you have to do this unless you have already beaten the main game before. Your just gonna have to use the wiki, or your going to waste TONS of time, like potentially years, because so much content is time locked to a certain time of year.

Almost. there is exactly ONE quest, that has a narrow 1 hour window, that you get through the mail. Jodi asks you to bring her a largemouth bass for dinner, at 7pm in game (can be after). The problem is unless you have the keys to the town (late/end game item from mr qi), her house closes at 8pm
not technically fully time gated since you CAN do this on any day, but it can be a huge PIA if you keep missing that 1 hour time-frame like i did for at least a year, with a largemouth bass in my pocket
there are a handful of things like this, like festivals can have certain windows to enter the map or else you miss it, but to be fair this is just me nitpicking the direct meaning of a sentence lol
mostly i felt the need to point it out bc this dumb quest is one of the most annoying ones IMO and is *technically* time-gated per day

Then I saw Project Zomboid-oh ya, I also now despise top down games. The first time I saw a PZ vid I couldn't believe peep would play something so low end looking then I saw another vid then bought the game and it's now one of my fav's.
Not too long after I saw some streamers playing SV and about an hr in I knew I wanted it but it was still pretty pricey.
I waited for a hefty sale and finally grabbed it and am VERY glad I did. I'm having some issues with my system now that I'm pretty sure is related to microsoft/updates or wutev but there's some games I just can't play. SV I CAN play and it's so much fun but can be a little overwhelming if you intend to get every single aspect of the game done as fast as possible.....at least for me.

Why in the world is there a library that you have to unlock the books in when the books explain core gameplay mechanics. That is called Artificial Difficulty, and that doesn't make your game more challenging. I feel like the game hates my guts every time I play it. It just feels like that game just wants to play by itself and doesn't want to have to share its toys with you. And the entire Winter Season is the biggest noob trap of them all. I hope you looked up a guide or have at least a few playthroughs under your belt. Because if you didn't then you won't make any money and all of your animals will die. This game is so stressful for all the wrong reasons. I'm still having the hardest time understanding why this game has so many defenders for it. I can see how it would be fun if you could turn your brain off and just goof around, but at that point, why are you even playing Video Games?
