Behind the Scenes Look: Live Television Production - Technical Directing is a real-time expose into the fast-paced world of live television sports news. It follows live Technical Director, Paul Overacker, as he shoots the documentary in real-time while switching a live broadcast of sports news. Rarely has there been such an intimate look at the pressures and time constraints of live sports news. Mr. Overacker directed and shot this documentary as part of a series of real-time documentaries that showcase to the outside world an insider's view of the challenges and the lightning fast speed that live television professionals face in the news industry; in this case Technical Directors. It is a commentary on how the modern world wants everything in record speed (thus, the brevity of the documentary) yet people don't always comprehend the amount of production work that needs to occur to produce high-quality news. The story informs people of the pressures of creating live television and it shows the impact on television professionals of having to compete in today's short-attention spanned 'Twitter' world.

I ever been to Master Control room when I was doing internships in my high school. I was so excited and proud to work with national news TV. But as a video editor, I think Live Production is more complicated since it feels like you're composing a show live that requires zero mistake and precision. While video editing is more forgivable than this.

@@speedbrake22 as a current TV News Assignment Manager & Executive Producer, who produces a daily 5pm news show, I wholly second this statement. There is no back button, no oops, the only grace we get is the short few second delay we have between the preview screen and what's going to air to correct something, and any mistakes in the rundown we come across we can try to edit on the fly before it reaches that point in the rundown. It's It's organized chaos.
That's a fun job... But it can be very stressful depending on your director!!!
As a Technician i know the is more than just pressing buttons you have to remember certain stuff yoh got to balance certain things you have to observe everymove every action dang it's super stressful but worth it when you know the is a lot of people who are being entertained and updated through your work

As an intern for TV/Film production I actually did something like this and it was the most fun thing I've ever done.

So much fun ! .. Used to do this on a GVG live back in the 90's.
In the 90s with physical tape and green screens and Chyrons use to be quite a juggling act.

I've been to a studio like this once and it was so fascinating to see what they were doing and how the whole thing worked behind the scenes. this doesnt really tell you much what they do, but let's say you spend 2 hours there and you figure out how most stuff works and what does what...
Learning the systems in a given control room and the run down of a show or update like this can be daunting, but after time it becomes largely muscle memory. Many have even more automation now. I moved exclusively to master control years back and communicate with production control rooms most of my shift. Their crews are down to a skeleton crew with tapes replaced by video servers. Production TD work is further complicated if you're the one rolling all of the video too. I tried that on a Quantel system and found it tricky.
I've been working in TV for 16 years doing Master Control, IT, and Engineering, and recently became a TD in my hometown in a small market. I'm both an MCO and a TD. It's a one man operation in the control room when its news time. With new technology, it doesn't take much to make it work. And you are totally right when it comes to muscle memory, it was actually the most important thing to learn for me. The system I use is touch screen and it controls everything, you're punching up mics, selecting stingers, running graphics, it's a lot... but with repetition it becomes muscle memory.
@@banestar Systems like OverDrive have streamlined production, but as a MCO I also see that many productions elements have been removed and much of the production switching has become pretty simplistic and sloppy. With so many of the elements now prerecorded a "Live Newscast" is really more of a quick online edit as the elements are ran through a digital meat grinder. It's not exactly artisan sausage though.
@@seanwebb605 Yeah man, Overdrive has definitely has made it to where a show can be pre-programmed and "spacebared" through and to where there isn't much humanity in it anymore, unless there is a problem of course and manual intervention is needed and shit hits the fan. Wish I could show you the system I'm working with. It's super hands on and I feel gives you more control of the newscast in kind of an at your fingertips intuitive way, but, at the expense of good audio. It's kind of a "whatever" on audio, the signal chain audio processor compresses the hell out of everything anyway.
@@banestar Last week our production control couldn't produce surround sound with channels 5&6. It was channels 1,2,3 and a stereo mix down on 7&8. Our playback system cheats stereo and different surround sound configurations to a fake surround sound so we just went with it.

Hard to speak for the whole world, but you'd have a hard time to find any tape machines being used in live broadcasts these days.

Curious about the job title - over here (UK) the job would be 'Vision Mixer', with Technical Manager (studios) or Engineering Manager meaning the person responsible for technical line management in the area concerned (including operational management) obviously. Are there other elements to the task beyond vision mixing (switching)?
I'm not familiar with the mixer ('switcher') you are using (my training was on GVG200-series decades ago!), but I understand the principles: it looks like all of the DSKs are under your right hand (and there seems to be quite a few on the output). I'm guessing at least four or five different layers? Is it right to assume someone from the production team is preparing the captions ('name supers' here, etc.), and I assume also any animations - do they get the equivalent of an audio 'open fader' so they can add them or not as necessary (and do the commentators "draw" on the picture during analysis, too?). What's the function of the keyboard to your extreme right beyond the DSKs at the end of the switcher?
It certainly looks like an afternoon or evening of really intense concentration!

This was just a quick update. A full hour would drive the novice mad.
Switcher looks like a Sony 7000x or an 8000. Depending on configuration you can have 4 or 6 DSK’s. Keyboard could be used for an EVS Spotbox or other server. In the US we had two positions, one was “switcher” which is closer to a British vision mixer, a true “technical director” is/was responsible for more of the technical side but nowadays many people use the term “TD” even for people who just push buttons and have no technical knowledge.
Whatever you do, don’t press that red button!

Jack Sugden BBC does that with some of their shows but it is more flexible and faster to just hire someone to switch live

I would like to know how much is a mixing console like this, maybe not that many have been built. How long does it take to learn to handle it? And if the mixing person is ill for a day or so, are all others in the room ready to do this job? Thanks, very interesting.
I can't tell you the exact cost, but such a huge system will certainly cost around millions. The process of developing the skills to work on such a console takes years. It is so that you can't just do it, but learn a lot over time. The people who are used in such large live shows have years of experience. Usually there are other people in the room who can intervene if the main operator is prevented in any way. They may not have that much experience, but it's better than stopping the show. I hope I could help you.

The buttons are grouped. It is less intimidating once your presets are setup and you can run through the show before hand. We use to use a system of direct rolls that complicated things. It requires you to roll the video on a squeeze over a motion background then move to full screen. Then it is a series of keys and moving from local and remote sources.

Start with getting involved with local sports broadcasts, High school Football and other sports.

@@miamimike91 take advantage of getting involve with every production you can. While there, you can also help students of other majors put together video projects that might give them extra credit and you more experience. I put together health videos for Nursing students and videotaped guest lecturers in other classes. A good Technical Director should know all the other positions of a production and be able to fill any position on the crew. Good luck and have fun.
@@Overacker Ryerson University in Toronto now has a dedicated sports broadcasting program. The students even get to work at the old Maple Leafs Gardens for assignments.

What software they use, especially like espn on their transitions and lowerthirds in their live broadcast. Sorry for the question, I don't have any idea for that, but I want to learn in production. TIA :)
For transitions most remote sports broadcast trucks use an EVS spotbox. The three main graphics machines are Chyron, Ross Xpression and Vizrt.

Most will use Ross rigs for displaying the transitions, but the actual transitions are created by a graphics team using software like After Effects, Nuke, Cinema 4D, 3ds Max, etc.
