Exactly why I'm getting into sports videography. It'll provide adrenaline to catch all the action, sure there's pressure, but it'll be a great pressure
"We'd hate to have a real job, sitting behind the desk all day" What you do guys is a real job, you love it and it's something exciting, challenging, creative, and useful. Thumbs up, I had no idea it's this complicated to capture the match, probably it's same with soccer, F1, olympic games and alike.
Hayden Allred I feel dumb writing that comment 2 years ago. After all this is vice. There was some acting and promotion element it. I was overwhelmed by vice's editing at that moment, and my logic can't function well right after watching it. After reading more and more vice. I realize how fake they were, I didn't mean they are as bad as fox. But their storytelling skill really can fool u some time In short, I realized it's a normal skill to listen on headphone and multitask.
+arsquared As a replay operator, how much time do you have to put together a replay footage? And, how do you edit the footage to get exactly the shot you want and the look you want?
Not a replay op, but an engineer. You have no time to edit it. You either have it or you don't. In the video they talk about a producer asking who has the shot and relays that to the director. Once the director calls that they're going to you, you have to cue it up for playback.
This is why I love The Verge. Great content, beautiful camera work, top notch editing and perfect sounds. Please make this "Behind the scenes" a regular series like Small Empires. People only see the end result and it's fascinating to see all the work and effort put into it.
The verge is the best tech site period. Even if you are not into tech, the verge always has something that will interest you. Amazing production guys, bravo
I am blown away about all the stuff that goes on behind the scenes producing a live sports event for broadcast. They make it look so seamless. A lot of cool technology going on there. Thanks for sharing this behind the scenes look.
Working live tv in sports is very respectful especially filming live to perfection to what the fans are going to see from their home tv. Mad respect and love to all you people working hard behind the scenes especially the guys hidden in the trailers that are not in the stadium booths working and looking at the field. Thumbs UP and shared! A+++
This video is great and shows what I do for a living and how much time and hard work we put in putting together a sport show for viewers to see and at times can be stressful but love every minute of it!
This is awesome! Big part of the reason I like NFL so much, this job is done with cutting edge tech and extremely skilled operators that know how to deliver the best coverage! Thanks Verge!
I just started working at a local news studio about three weeks ago. Watching this video gave me a very idea of what'd I'd like our staff to strive for. Thanks for posting! I learned much from it.
I wonder what's going on behind the scenes of the 'behind the scenes', and behind the scenes of the behind the scenes of the behind the scenes, and b....................
Love the Pong overlay on the program output at 4:47 - 4:50. Is that an Easter egg that was deliberately put in, or was it just a test pattern that they were using on the day?
12:10 so right about the rush. I have to compose myself for around 5 minutes, not checking my phone and preparing myself because the rush is a lot. If I'm not ready, everything can get screwed up.
Oh my gosh I want a job like this. I do the most basic stuff possible with camera switching and output stuff at my church, but I love it. This is so cool
Knowing that on the other end of "my signal", it looks like this, give me the feel that I've chosen right. Though, at the age of 16 (with no related education), running as a steadicam assistant, tells me that I'm on the highway to a profession respected by A LOT of people. Still, the productions aren't as big here in Norway as e.g. the NFL, but it's really fun working with this type of technology!
What a fantastic video. The game they were there for was an incredible comeback win for the Patriots, and one of two games that day in Massachusetts. Later that night, 30 miles north in Boston, the Red Sox had their own miraculous comeback against the Tigers. Whats amazing to think about is FOX had to have the same kind of resources at Fenway too. Goes to show how complex sports broadcasting is.
This video is so amazing, thank you so much for sharing it. I always thought that different angles were taken with the drones but in fact, is a mechanical axes cam. this is so intense so pro and so cool. thanks
@@PH7NT0M Look for schools that teach TV broadcasting then start freelancing as a camera op. shooting high school or college sports. Its just like the actual sport, if you are good you will work your way up.
I just accepted a job for an MLB team getting back into the control room after 5 years behind a desk… the pay isn’t great at the level I’m going in, and the hours aren’t guaranteed, but after sitting behind a desk for 5 years I can say I’d rather scrape by in the control room than scrape by at a desk. I’m excited to go back into that world and it’s going to be worth it, I know it.
I am an aspiring cinematographer and am trying to learn as much as I can about audio and video at a young age. This is top of the line video for me to learn from! Great video! Keep it up!
Seriously amazing to think that tens of millions of people are listening to the audio work of ONE GUY for like 3+ hours straight. What other musician can make that claim?
The talent is on both sides and most non-cunty on-camera staff fully appreciate the technical side of it - some of them even embrace it and learn about it.
Superbowl 2018 was when we all experienced a major network problem 5 thoughts or so plus people had experienced a major problem not able to view the game online or on TV. where millions, thousand of fans were left hanging...
I used to do stuff like this and our cameras had to all be remote controlled and we’d run cables really far from each cam into the control room and it was stressful having delay in controlling the pan and tilt of each cam, but dang this seems way more stressful but fun!
This behind the scenes game is far more interesting than the game going on down on the field.
Which is why im going into the field of broadcasting lol
BullCraftMaxx same
Exactly why I'm getting into sports videography. It'll provide adrenaline to catch all the action, sure there's pressure, but it'll be a great pressure
Whenever I'm invited to a football party, I just listen to the audio mix and watch the graphics to keep myself entertained.
You're the guy who need to join them.

The sound guy mix 5.1 surround without the need of a headphone! insane listening to chaos 8 tracks at the same time and mix with feel!
You wouldn't be able to accurately hear the broadcast through a headphone. Incredible multitasking... WOW!

Not to mention the Producer, the Director, Assoc. Director at the SAME time!
I'm watching this again 8 years later, and I think it's one of the more well produced behind-the-scenes documentary of a live broadcast team.
So true man
I am a replay operator, and wow...this clip shows why I love my job!!!

I miss it too. Retired in 2014. And BTW it’s “ready 1, take 2”

Wow. Fantastic story you guys... i'm floored by this.
It is amazing to see how this works. If you would like a miniature version you can always help with AV and Sound at church!
this is the reason why I watch The Verge is because of it's content. (written/video)I believe in it

I like that they give us a look behind the scenes AND ralk about what cameras they use etc. and even the geeky stuff like 4k and slow motion etc :-)
Pretty cool to see inside the world of football video production. Thanks The Verge
Outstanding video, the verge!

It's probably just that MacBook's screensaver
Essentially it’s so you’re feeding a known, moving video rather than a potential frozen frame due to issues
Awesome, awesome job! Great and fascinating work behind the scenes!
Very cool. Always wanted to get a behind the scenes look at what goes into an NFL production.
That is crazy. Especially the audio guy. Do you think you could listen to that many things?! Karissa Bird Yes, intense!!!
***** This is amazing!
Yeah I can understand why it can be so stressful for them! At the same time though it looks fun!
