    Google says their Pixels are DCI-P3 but they have locked them to sRGB. Not sure why the mistake. If you are unsure about what I say, just go to a Verizon store if you can and see how you feel. It's what you feel that matters. I just show some reproducible measurements to give you an idea of what's going on.

    I was waiting to hear Erica's take on the display issue. Nobody scrutinizes displays as thoroughly. She has spoken, and the question of an issue is settled. Frankly, I'm surprised she stayed as cool as she did; over $1000 for _that_ ....

      Yeah, I'm waiting to see her review of the retail unit of the V30. Already she says that Samsung's is better, but perhaps as an overall package the V30 may still pull out for some people-personally I am leaning V30 unless the S8 plus really does hold its performance 6 months after people get their phones.

    • @learntocode9206
      @learntocode9206 7 років тому +2

      Tony Tran The V30 is better overall, IMO. I'm using a Note 8, but between V30 and Pixel 2XL, I'd choose the V30 without question. Way more features, far better build quality, and more features...for less $!

    I agree with you 100%. I received my Pixel 2 XL this morning and I'm very disappointed in the screen. The colors are incredibly flat, significantly more so than my Pixel XL from last year. I didn't think that the blue tint when looking at the screen from an angle would be an issue, but it's very noticeable. I often tilt the phone slightly when reaching across the display, and even the slightest tilt causes the entire display to turn blue. Any update that Google rolls out will have a negligible impact. I very much want to love the phone, but the screen is really ruining an otherwise incredible phone.

    • @sdelcegno
      @sdelcegno 7 років тому

      Dexter Bentley I would bet anything Google will unlock the color setting to have a more vibrant colors with an update. They have also said they may do it. The blue color shift can not be corrected.

    • @dexterbentley6336
      @dexterbentley6336 7 років тому +2

    • @sdelcegno
      @sdelcegno 7 років тому

      Dexter Bentley I've gotten used to the colors but prefer vibrant. It's the same color as the pixel one with the vibrancy off. Contact google and complain. I plan to. They have said they will release an update if enough complain.

    • @sdelcegno
      @sdelcegno 7 років тому

      One thing if the colors become more vibrant they may use a warmer tone if this happens the shift may be less blue. Samsung shifts colors when you tilt it but the screen has a warmer tone so it's less noticable.

    • @sdelcegno
      @sdelcegno 7 років тому

      The Original i have an iPad 12.9 pro right in front of me the new One. I don’t think the colors are great it looks accurate same as the pixel xl 2 but neither I would call vibrant.

    BTW, I really wish people would stop referring to these new display ratio phones as 6 (or 6.3) inches. Because of the narrow 18x9 (or 18x5:9) the total area is a lot less than you would expect from a typical 16x9 display size. But I don't hear anyone talking about this. We need a new metric other than screen diagonal if we're going to compare display sizes. How about total area instead? For example, the Nexus 6 (Motorola) and the Pixel 2 XL both have "6 inch" displays. Yet, the Nexus 6 has a total area of *97.9* square cm whereas the Pixel 2 XL only has a total area of *92.6* square cm. That's kind of a big difference!
    PS - The bezels on the original Nexus 6 (which also had front-facing stereo speakers) were surprisingly thin for its time. In fact, the screen-to-body ratio of the Nexus 6 was 74.1%, which is not much less than the new Pixel 2 XL's 76.4% screen-to-body ratio. However, as an owner of the Nexus 6, I can attest that the OLED display on the Nexus 6 was not very good either.

    • @Kungpaoshizzi
      @Kungpaoshizzi 7 років тому

      Agreed. I got the s8 (which I'm returning; it has blue color shift too which I don't care about but am tired of people saying samsung panels are perfect- pfft) and it has such a thin screen horizontally it's a joke. And after turning off the Edge crap (which WILL cause burn-in) the edges of the display serve no purpose, and only cause a HUGE glare from lights on the ceiling or whatever light is behind you. So if you put it on a kickstand or such on your desk, it's so incredibly glare-y, it's stupid. Going to get the pixel 2 xl I believe as one disappointing thing (since I've been windows phone for the passed 4 years) is the bloatware and knox chip to find out if you've rooted/flashed. Just another measure to force crap on people.

      They are not going that way... Google and Apple both are investing in LG for their displays. Mass production of quality displays is an issue and currently Samsung holds the monopoly in the market for them. So, whatever Samsung charges, Companies have to pay for it..

    You're spot on. The color shift on the Pixel 2 XL was immediately noticeable to me. I was floored by how little I need to move the screen for it to show up. Yes, if I look straight at the phone it is ok but I frequently sneak a text under my desk at work or check my phone when its plugged in at a stop light and there are many scenarios that I will not be holding the phone directly in front of my face. Within 15 minutes of getting this phone today I was contacting Google customer service to return it. 10 hours later they've yet to get back to me. Very disappointed and I really want to love this phone. I will get the smaller Pixel 2.

    Great stuff Erica. This is a little ridiculous and the perfect reason why Google needs to bring back the Nexus line with mid range prices. I'll use the Nexus 5 ( no, not 5x) as a prime example. When you have a phone that doesn't cost as much as iPhone or Galaxy, you won't be thinking of these things. The Nexus 5 was a great phone with good power with a decent camera and it was $400. When you price your products amongst the big boys you will get judged as such.

    iPhone 8 is sRGB by default. Mostly it shows sRGB. It supports Display P3 for only a few things such as certain apps where developers embed the profile so the phone knows to honor the P3 color space. Also photos are captured in Apple's Wide color so the gallery will show P3 images. External content encoded in P3 will work as well.

    I just performed these exact same tests on my Note 8, and wouldn't you know it - that blue shift when you tilt or rotate happens on arguably the best screen in smartphones. This feels like a tempest in a teapot.

      Samsung panels color shift is more warm but their panels definitely do it. This shift on the pixel is a cooler tint so it's more noticeable. I have a xl2 and the screen is fine not Samsung good but no issues with daily use looks good still. If Google releases a update to have more vibrant colors it will be better

    • @sdelcegno
      @sdelcegno 7 років тому +1

      The Original I have the pixel XL 1 and pixel XL 2 I agree the shift is alittle to easy. But while I wish it was alittle better the screen is not a bad screen. In fact I was worried but when I got it I have been enjoying the phone. I can see why it would bother some but I don't use my phone's at any Angle but directly to my face so it doesn't bother me much I am keeping the phone and like it so far. I still agree the phone should be 200 bucks cheaper.

    • @garrett3108
      @garrett3108 7 років тому +6

      I haven't used the Pixel 2, but I have used other high end 2017 smartphones, and while they're faster, very rarely are they so much faster to warrant a thousand dollar upgrade. That being said, it appears that the speed is the only thing the Pixel 2 excels at - its build quality and style is just as bad as the first iteration, and most of its other features are standard at this point.

    • @gauravjha8938

      There's not much technology that can be crammed into a phone anymore. Innovations are rare and the few that are there are hard to implement in Mass Production.
      It'll take time, however a smartphone can easily last a few years without any problems..

    Personally, I am very happy with my pixel 2 xl performance. Disregarding the whole screen issue the software experience is simply amazing. And the camera is really good, my brother has the note 8 and we've been comparing as far as gaming and in our experience it's pretty close and in the pixel 2's favor as far as software experience. I know the whole screen issue is going to bother a lot of people but for me i don't even notice it, I have the night light mode on almost always and it pretty much fixes the blue tint on mine, not to mention on my particular phone the blue tint isn't as bad as others I've seen. In the end I think this was a great buy and was extremely worth it ( in my opinion) despite the screen issue which Google is already working on an update for.

      Better than glass, that shatters on first drop. Glass is a step backwards. Nexus 4 had a glass back, as did iPhone 4. I thought we had moved on from that and said metal backs were the best. Primer on top is acceptable if you want good grip, but I could see that being considered a tad much.

    Why would anyone downgrade this video? I find it to be very factual and neutral. I have pre-ordered my 2 XL and it should be here this week. However, now that I've seen some of the reviews, I'm probably going to be sending it back. Especially after playing with a Note 8. It's a shame, because I really wanted the pure Google experience, but not at the expense of a poor screen. I was already on the fence when I lost the headphone jack and non expandable storage. With this issue, I'm not finding any redeeming qualities to the 2 XL.

    I always look forward for your videos. I love how you test the display since it's the one thing you will always look at in a phone. From my experience with the various phones I have had. People notice the quality fairly quickly especially when you have a phone that has vivid more saturated colors like a Samsung display and then you go over to say a Pixel and you just notice the difference. My experience tells me I wouldn't like that difference, so I canceled my Pixel order. I can't justify paying a grand for a phone that has a display of that quality especially when Google says they MAY include a fix for the display if enough people ask for it.

    I really liked your work. Finally, someone who honestly and openly acknowledges the issues that matter!
    Otherwise, I just watched Marques' Pixel review and it's far from helpful. Sure he knows how to operate his expensive camera! However, when it comes to reviewing, it's better to understand that a lot of people do what is a virtual version of window-shopping via channels like yours and Marques'. And quite a lot of them actually end up buying. Therefore, being considerate is the key much valued. Because unlike reviewers, most people are stuck with a phone for quite some time. And in that case, it is a big deal when something as significant as a display starts to disappoint. Yes, that same display which your favourite reviewer ticked-off.

    I tried to love my 2 XL, but i rma'd it today because of the blue shift...

    I've got the Pixel 2 XL and love it. No issues with the display.

    I hate to say it, but I think that OnePlus is making a better Nexus successor than Google. Disgraceful.

      ibol13 it's a pity, yes.
      I wish Nexus phones to be back. It'll not only give Google a different segment of consumers but also give a choice against One Plus devices!

    i was almost dead set on the google xl 2 and was going to preorder a few weeks ago, but thankfully i decided to wait and see some more reviews once more people had them in their hands. I'm glad i waited. I'm hearing lots of negatives about the screen now and the color shifting. Going to forget about this phone now and choose something else.

      I have one, and didn't notice it until the pixel 2 xl screen comments. Now I see it on the s8 clear as day. I find it so hard now since I stare at plain white screens all day. :|

      I ditched the s8, razer phone is so incredibly better than either the pixel 2 or the s8. It's like comparing laptops to the triple screened razer laptop, it's really that big of a difference.

    Thanks for the comparison, the blueish tone was very clear. I have an LG V10 and they don't have that tone. Google should hopefully fix it with an update soon

      I'd say the OnePlus 5/5T would be closer. Essential phone has terrible reviews and has only sold about 5000 devices.. I was gonna get the Pixel 2 XL, but got the original Pixel XL for half the price.
