I was 9 years old and had a blast. We moved the wood burner to the basement to keep the pipes from freezing. Tied extension cords to our body's to go out and get wood. No electricity for 2 weeks. Big drifts.
@@EdDanaGuitar It sure was. I'm 49 now. My poor parents. Lol. It was like a camping trip in our basement. Ate like kings off the fire. When it got dark we went to bed. I'm sitting in front of my wood burner right now because of that couple of weeks. Without it we would have froze and went hungry. We would have most likely made it till after the storm though. We then could have took the sleds to town and stayed with someone. Some guy stayed at our home for a day. He got stuck on the road. When it cleared a bit we took him somewhere else. We were out playing one day when some big machinery hit his car on the road. I was always amazed how close he was to our home. He sat in the car for at least a day.
Thanks for sharing your video. I was 13 and lived out in the country in Radnor. Had to be evacuated by farmers in their big tractors because we lost power and were without if for days. Started running out of food and heat. Scary time..
Too groovy. I remember it well. Remember the "I survived the blizzard of '78" shirts? I was next door in Indiana and the best part of it all was getting snowed in with the band so all we had to do was play all the time. Thanks for the video Ed!
I remember that storm! my wife and me married that year and I drove back home from Akron OH when it was hitting and barely made it home before it got this bad!
I was in 3rd grade then. School was out and snow banks were 10 to 20 ft high. Used to walk on the tops of the banks. There were holes dug in them to crawl under and you feel as though they'd fall on you but they didn't. During that time snow ice cream was made a lot with the fresh snow, sugar, and vanilla put in the blender with a bit of milk. Watching tv was a fun way to pass the time, playing games, having an good imagination helped too.
I did literally survive the blizzard. Another 30 to 45 minutes and there would have been three more frozen bodies. Have been telling my kids about the "adventure" and now they can see what it looked like while sitting by the fire this January 12,2021. At our farm in Delphos, OH the neighbors house was covered, road one lane for two months, lived in town for five weeks. WOW ..what a winter. I was so happy I had run new water lines 54 inches deep. Just below the frost line that winter. WOW. Words cannot describe the ferocity of the storm. Thanks for the images and history.
I was in college at the time taking classes in weather forecasting . ...it was during the Era when the narrative was we were entering a new ice age. Lenard Nemoy did the AL Gore version of the end of the world film. I know, "how dare I?"
That was my first winter back in Ohio after 8 years in the Air Force. I remember cars and fences disappearing for a month after that. One car next door in the back yard had snow in it until May. Met my wife that winter.
I was 7 years old. My grandparents lived in Findlay and I was in Toledo right on Lake Erie.the snow was so deep we could jump off the house into the snow drifts! Thanks for the memories!
I lived in Fremont at that time. I worked at Eckrich lunch meat. We had our 30th reunion dinner a couple of years ago at the Eagles on State st. I go up a few hours before just to drive around & try & remember stuff. I live in Grove City now.
Worked on the state road crew.....what a blast 77 and 78 were.....I still hear the PTO whining and the windshield....forget it you looked out the side window
I live in Columbus now; I live around Cedar Point at that time, I bought a new snowblower down here about 4 years ago, I think I've used it 3-4 times, I won't even put gas in it until we get something. Never snow enough to blow.
I remember it so well, Hey neighbors I was in Fremont Ohio when this happened, I worked at Eckrich lunch meats. 1st child born 9 months after this, I guess I did not need to say that. But she is a blizzard baby. She is the proud parent of 5 of my 7 grandkids.

We married on August 77. 5 months before, we live in the kitchen with a gas stove for heat. For about a week we had nothing.

I saw snow in the Murphy Mart parking lot close to June that year.

State Road Ashtabula?
I was 14 when this happened. The winter before it was just as bad. Never had anything come close to this since.

What a challenging weekend that was. I endured this storm in Toledo.
Yeah, that would be too deep for my tractor and blade to deal with...
Incredible!
The last of the snow did not melt until March.
I was 14 or so then. I thought it was the end of the world! Kind of scary. Winters were bad back in the 60s & 70s
I was only 3 years old, don't remember it.
My mom was born during the blizzard
Findlay is not “North East” Ohio. It’s pretty plainly north west, and my home for 14 years.
