Also, at least from my experience, Goh shipping wasn't really something I saw many people who hate Goh concern themselves with, because it wasn't really a prominent character trait at all. He didn't just ruin Journeys but stupid choices of writers did. Ash's new Pokemon are magically just born and they're strongest team he had. Ash going from winning Alola league which James from TR is Top 8 to becoming strongest trainer in the world. Ash not using older Pokemon. PWC being bad especially Masters 8. Iris becoming champion despite not having any dream of that. He wanted to become Dragon master. If so, why didn't Misty become Champion? She was "older" than Iris. Just because is Iris in the game, doesn't mean she should've become champion. Plus it is also soon. Also, not enough Galar region. Goh had some contribution like catching Legendary, catch mons left and right and being in 2 episodes in which Ash and Pikachu didn't appear. But it is mostly making Ahs unbeatable, after winning no offense trash league that most characters from past would do that with Z Move/Mega. I mean Gladion is strong but not stronger than upgraded older rivals.

But if you give Ash win against Gladion in a league that is - let's be honest not good system wise. Don't get me wrong, Gladion is strong trainer but not even close to E4 and in Journeys because of that you go: "Alright, Ash should beat Leon!" That is really stupid.
I think what made me dislike Goh the most was the constant pokemon catching. past protagonists bonded with the pokes they caught and made it feel special in the anime. Goh was way too much like the players and just threw a ball at anything and then stored em in a PC.. It felt way too close to home to a lotta people i feel, and it's kinda hard to see in a protagonist character.
I can understand that, he was just throwing balls at everything, meanwhile when other characters like ash or may caught a pokemon it felt special because they had bonded with them or because it was something that developed over multiple episodes or something like that
The real problem is that he's basically a walking advertisement which wasted so much time just so they can say "PLS PLAY POKEMON GO" even on the very last series?!?

They just shoved the Darkest Days arc very early of the anime, only to them promoting more on Go and the SwSh DLCs. Meltan debuted just to promote both Go and Let's Go, which by then in the anime, it's the final season (debuted in the anime in 2019, after the Let's Go Eevee arc aka Lana's Eevee and the Ultra Necrozma arc).
It's honestly sad that one of the most iconic TV show protagonists ended up leaving the show with probably his worst traveling companions. Even the Sun and Moon anime had a more memorable cast, even if some characters got more development than others.
What ruined journeys was the way the episodes were all trying to be their own story and not giving anything from sword and shield a chance. They got the darkest day stuff overwith as soon as possible and never touched anything from sword and sheilds story again

Honestly, same. Goh annoys me so much, he’s a character that feels like he runs on pure dumb luck. The show alright isn’t amazing, and Goh makes it 10x worse.
I think one of the main problems with Goh is simply breaking the laws of Pokémon itself. Since every single time Ash tried to catch a Pokemon without battling it, that he didn’t befriend beforehand or wasn’t a weak little bug, it didn’t work, besides one exception, and Ash would be called out on how stupid that was, meanwhile that just kind of works for Goh. Like he isn’t even using different types of pokeballs which would at least make more sense as to why it was easier (especially since the one time Ash caught a non bug type without battling or befriending, was Totodile, WITH A LURE BALL)
The Safari Zone is the only other exception I can think of where all 30 balls worked to get Tauros, but that is a unique situation that does not apply here at all
Goh was a'ight though I liked his Pokemon more than him. Honestly it would have been cool if Gary was Ash's traveling companion this time in his final (as of currently) journey

In before you say, " ah but he was kid!", Bonney says hi. She has done way more while also being the same age as Max. Heck there is Elite Four member in Paldea, Poppy that is younger than him that is more competent than him. Also Ash is ten years old which means he is also a kid along with others known to be his exact age. Goh at least can back up his Pokemon knowledge, can use & catch Pokemon, cook, knows how to use tactics well, and never acts bigger than he is. Face it Max is the most useless companion.

My personal beef with Gou is the fact that he got ALL three starters. I honestly hate the fact that they gave Ash two random Kanto Pokémon and a Sinnoh Pokémon which leave him with two ACTUAL new Pokémon being Sirfetch'd and Dracovish. At least with Gengar I can understand cause it can Gigantamax but Lucario and Dragonite shouldn’t be with him at all. Like Inteleon or Rillaboom would have been really cool secondary aces but Lucario feels so forced upon him that I can’t really like it that much.
Goh getting all the Starters is a Problem yes. But the Bigger Problem is Not showing off Galar! Lucario is something he should've gotten a long time ago; that Aura Sphere Rilou back in Shinnoh or in Kalos for Mega Evolution! Dragonite Safari Zone episode or when he got his 8th Badge from Clair since that Dratini was meant to represent the Gift one from GS games!

The thing is Gengar and Lucario aren’t really random. Gengar is a callback to his Haunter who he gave to Sabrina. It’s like a what if he kept it and evolved it moment. But it’s fully evolved… And Ash knows aura sensing from the Lucario movie (on which make that movie canon) and used it with Greninja later on. It makes sense for him to have one of his own. Not random. Now Dragonite was random, but I think it fits well as an Ash Pokémon. Exactly his style of attack with Dragon Dance to boost Attack and Speed. That’s my outlook. Don’t have to agree.

Not gonna lie, I feel like both Goh and Chloe ruined Pokémon Journeys. The entire series was wasted potential and a flat out joke but the shipping, OMG that was the worse. That was terrible but I get kinda understand it somewhat like 3% of it because Chloe was supposed to be the main girl for Pokémon Journeys but like she barely had any screen time and even when she did had screen time, it's like she was there just to be there, it literally sounded like Chloe was just a random ass character that was nothing special because she had no goal, she never had her Eevee evolve, and she barely had any character development because throughout the series, she's just a shy and introverted girl with no dreams at all
My issue is Goh is because of his impact on the series in general. Ever since the beginning of the Pokemon anime, we got to experience Ash and his friends travel together with their pokemon. Whether it was playing, arguing, training or exploring we got to experience that and feel a connection with everyone even the ones that didn't a lot of attention like Boldore, Palpitoad, gible, etc. But with Goh he sort takes that connection away. It's not Goh catching so many pokemon that's the problem; it's the fact most of these captures feel like a checklist for a collection instead of companions that you bond with.The biggest proof of how horrible Goh's impact on the anime is the Galar Starters themselves. These are by far the worst any of the regional starters have ever been handled. Cinderace, who I'd like to remind everyone was the reason Goh wanted to catch every single pokemon out there, was goh’s first ever Pokemon and they rushed its evolution when they could've done so much more like having Raboot be more disobedient because Goh wanted to catch more pokemon instead of improving on the pokemon that he did have. And to add insult to injury, it was replaced when goh caught sobble, and then left to rot along with the other worthless captures when it fully evolved unless necessary. Sobble spends its time hiding and running instead of acutally trying to become more courageous, its evolution as drizzile was in a cave and never bothered showin up for a major appearance or development until its final evolution. And grookey was the absolute worst out of all of them. It was just the generic comic relief starter that follows Dawn's Piplup, without any significant to its name. It didn’t even get use more than 2 moves. In fact, most of its time that it spends, it usually causes problems like the Spiritomb possessing Ash or Falinks getting seperated. I don't feel any connection with Goh and his pokemon. What I DO feel is the writers forcibily shoving the idea of Goh having a strong bond with his Pokemon down my throat by mostly saying it without actually showing it. It just doesn't work out for anyone.
The problem is, Goh's goal can never be accomplished as long as Pokémon still makes new generations, that's why I like rewrites of Pokémon Journeys that make him want to be a Pokémon Professor since those lean more into his want to learn more about Pokémon
Let's be real here, an even bigger reason that Goh's goal was impossible from the start is because the entire Porygon line is (unjustly) perma-banned from the anime, so even if new Pokemon stopped being discovered one day and he was able to slowly catch up, it ultimately wouldn't matter. He's unironically more likely to catch Arceus, then somehow travel to a parallel universe and catch a SHINY Arceus too, than he is to ever so much as SEE a Porygon.
I feel like Journeys as a concept really screwed over Galar and the characters and Pokémon released. Horizons is partially cleaning up the mess, debuting character not seen like Kabu. Pokémon that never got to debut in Journeys like Boltund, Rolycoly, Carkoal, Poltergeist, Barraskewda…all debut in Horizions. Boltund, Blitbug, and Corvisquire debut as minor background characters. Poltergeist and Carkoal are Pokémon on the ship. Rolycoly debuts with Kabu, but you would think Sizzlipede (a Pokémon catchable in his own gym!!!) makes its debut…no…gets no debut. Porygon-2, Porygon/ -Z, Acrtovish, Kubfu, Dracozolt only get a brief image. Barraskewda gets absolutely nothing, I’m hopeful Kofu can change that. A lot of other Galar Pokémon debut only beside a trainer for a short scene, like Pinchurchin. And some only debut because of the Gatcha Machine. What happened to the episode that focused on highlighting each mons characteristic. And don’t get me started on the Husui bunch. It’s ridiculous. Even the important gym leaders and DLC characters are not safe. No Milo, Nessa, Gordie, Melony…where? No gym challenges? They changed the formula and it didn’t work. They made Goh the center of attention and they traveled region to region so he can collect them all and gather research. His goal was executed poorly. We see no struggles besides Dewgong on captures. Where is the growth of skill when he apparently has hacks in his DNA. Project Mew was a cool concept, but it made Goh the main character while Ash sidelines. Two protagonists clashing each others screentime. Goh should of honestly gotten his own show or something, maybe there would be more storytelling to make him less bland. Them being based in Kanto and wasting time there instead of maybe…the new region! Nothing in Journeys felt deserved. Ash progressing in battles with cheap plot armor like Ash vs. Drasna, Ash vs. Raihan, Ash vs. Volkner (Motor Drive issue), Ash vs. Steven (Redirecting its Z move’s bolts after Metagross used Agility and dodged the attack). Pokémon that were unfazed or tanked damage well fall to one or two moves. Ash removing Cotton Gaurd’s Defense boost with soaking Altaria in water? Meteor Assault on a Dragon/Fairy is enough to faint it? Catches don’t feel as earned. We needed more Flygon and Golurk capture moments. Actually fighting the target. Battles feel forced and he don’t struggle enough. We needed to see more of the octopus/squid smackdown. Progression that felts earned, not forced. Journeys is pretty flawed…. One of the worse modern Pokémon ever . Style I liked but everything else 🫠

In a word, Yes, He did ruin the Pokémon journey saga by throwing Pokéballs at wild Pokémon just to catch them without battling The wild Pokémon, and Without tiring them out just to break free And back into the wild! He also robbed Ash of catching Three Galar Starters Pokémon, Flygon, Altaria, Kingdra, Absol, and Suicune! Ash Just saw the wild Suicune First He should’ve had the rights to catch it. But no, Goh Had to cut in line and catch it himself instead. Ash saw Suicune First in the first Pokémon Johto journeys Of season 3 episode 1 titled: Dont Touch That Dile!
goh is a product of bad writing, and bad writing is always the killer. The issue is that goh's position, and his goal even though its the literal point of the series tag line none of it feels earned. Its a insult compared to having this being ash's LAST season which you made a point of. "Ruined" may be a strong word, but if you want to consider every other cameo and characters that coulda used the screen time to expand that we didn't get enough of (or) fans wanted more of. Then yes, he did ruin journeys.

Ok so my opinion before seeing the video: Yes. Goh was such an annoyance for me, I was never someone that cared too much for doing the Pokedex, so a character with a dream of completing the dex would be something that I wouldn't really care, but I also never care for the pokémon contests in game but I adored them in anime, that's why I love Dawn, May, not Serena. But the anime could do something cool with a mechanic that I don't care about, unfortunately they didn't. Goh was annoying and frustrating, after all he was capturing several pokémon every episode, but what makes he frustrating, at least for me, is that many of the pokémon he got, were all pokémon that I would love to see Ash using, like the Cinderace, Flygon and Scizor and etc. I would prefer personally if Goh had some episodes for him, but we had way more for the old ash companions, like... WE DID NOT SEE MAY OR MAX IN THE ANIME WTF. Oh and captured legendaries, what for me always is a bad thing I always believe that no pokémon Trainer in the anime should have a legendary pokémon, no matter the excuse, legendary s should be only be able to be captured in the games
Just so you know, the true reason why May didn't make an appearence in Pokemon Journeys is because her Japanese VA had received a health problem that prevented her from handling VA work. So if that person couldn't voice that character, then that character wasn't going to appear in the show because of the rule that characters who get created in by people in Japan aren't allowed to be recasted unlike characters who get created by people in other countries. They were thinking that if that VA got well before Journeys ended then they would have May show up in it, but that VA didn't.
He did not ruin the series, but his character's direction could have been more organized. That's not getting to the fact that his gimmick of being a Pokemon Go player in the anime was not the best choice.

It's not Goh that ruined Journeys. It was terrible pacing, writing, inconsistent screen sharing with Ash, lazy recap episodes, Goh's Gary Stew ability to catch power that he won't use, and subpar animation that ruined Journeys. Ash's final hurrah felt like it was somewhat half robbed because of Goh's inclusion and incessant need to catch stuff. So many character interactions, lessons, and development could have been had with Goh being the newbie foil. But instead we were supposed to be satisfied with all that sloppy development with a touch of Mew's butt. Goh is a part of why Journeys felt lack luster, but he's not the main one.
Its Not that Goh Ruined Journeys or that he's a Terrible MC, its Not even his Goal being simplistic seeing someone trying to catch them all is Refreshing I think. Its that Project Mew comes out of Nowhere and Lessens the character even Further! We even see that Shiny Hunter guy, would've like to see Ash Trade Noctowl to him then maybe Trade back or something just to help out.

Yeah I still argue that making Ash leave on Journeys was a bad idea. And the ending was pretty uninteresting. I really like Riko, Roy and Dot (especially Riko and Dot), but Ash should have went to Paldea and met Nemona. These two would share one braincell and it would be great.
Journeys had a few issues: Covid, Netflix only, lot of filler, very little done with Galar, no Galar gyms, & Goh was built just to be a tie in on Pokemon Go not as a real character at least not initially
It feels like Goh was written to be only primarily in the first season and then not show up as often but the writers got a call from corporate that basically said: “Yeah he has to be in the entire show…too bad we’ve already done this type of thing for the other companions…that’s not our problem figure it out.”
Personally I lover Goh in journeys because I was always extremely frustrated with ash not focusing on catching Pokémon, only battles. So I felt more represented with Goh and I enjoyed that he brought some fresh air to the stale pokemon anime formula.
It honestly just seemed Goh was meant to be a new version of Ash since at the beginning of the anime when originally he wanted to catch every Pokémon ever but didn’t. But that quite faded into the background soon afterwards unfortunately.

Besides people over exaggerate Goh catching a legendary, when Brandon, Tobias, a Nurse Joy, that Alt.Universe Zeraora guy and Ash himself has cought a Legendary or mythical. Heck there is a random background character with Heatran. Granted Heatran is not that popular, but still legendary. Meanwhile Ash has Nagandel which is an Ultra Beast, Melmetal a mythical and Legendary in Solgaleo. The last one counts as both the The Pokemon Company and anime treat as a capture of his. Even being included in Pikachu's mid battle motivating dream sequence showing all of Ash's Pokemon.
In my head I always see Chloe as both a main character and recurring since there was no new female travelling companion in the journeys series. So she’s the closest thing.
Chloe's problem was more than anything the fact that she didn't get to have the same kind of focus and attention put into her character because Ash and Goh were treated as the 2 main protagonists for Journeys, likely because they are boys and Pokemon is more associated with being for boys than it is girls. That said, Chloe was interesting when she was first introduced, as they could've built on her not liking Pokemon more and maybe doing something with that, but she got shafted because it apparently would've been too much work to write a third main character into the cast. They could've even possibly given her more screentime in place of the filler that Journeys is known for -- even if her plots were still mostly filler themselves, they could've still been used to give her something more to do instead of largely treating her like she didn't exist. And while she did get some resolution to her character at the end of Journeys, and I personally do think it makes some sense for her, given her main goal was to find out why her Eevee wouldn't evolve, it's still a problem because it mostly comes out of nowhere, and only seems like it was done because the writers suddenly remembered at the last minute that they needed to give her storyline some closure, too. There's also the fact that we never got to learn why exactly her Eevee was unable to evolve, which in my opinion is the biggest disappointment with Chloe as a whole, because it shows that the writers cared that little about her so as to just brush it off and hope no one would notice or care
I do think there’s only thing we can all partially agree on. The backlash and complains in the Pokémon fanbase aren’t anywhere near as astronomical as what we’ve got now with Star Wars. Honestly it’s just getting so out of hand, it’s hard to take that series anymore for good reason as well too I have to say.
I honestly wished that in Journeys, Ash would mainly traverse the world with 0 companions but with his old companions coming in and out from time to time.

You know what i also find a bit annoying, is, as someone who would say they’re more socially conservative on the latest wave of politics (i.e the last 5-10 years), I find it kinda like its a forced political message when some fans try to make every bloody character something within the lgbtq+ community.. I have absolutely no issue with a character being gay, but its as annoying as shipping a boy and girl who aren’t interested in each other as trying to come up with some head cannon where someone who isnt gay is gay :/
@@Brody9592I do see Goh as queer, but it is weird to try to argue that it's canon, because it's almost definitely not. 90% of the time, the character is canonically straight, and though you can see the character as x sexuality, it will never be real.
Feels like Goh's execution was just disappointing especially cause Pokemon did do the whole "catch every Pokemon archetype" in the manga with Crystal. And it was done so much better in the manga because she actually used mechanics of the game, like using different balls for different scenarios (level ball/fast ball/lure ball) and even having pokemon on her team meant to help with catching pokemon (smoochum for mean look, parasect for spore, cubone for false swipe) Like I get that Goh was supposed to be based off Pokemon Go which doesn't have all these mechanics (and also hence why the separation of battling vs catching when its pretty much both needed in the main series) but that just limits him so much. Heck even if you did want the Pokemon Go route, the manga also had a scene where Silver told Gold about "energy spots" that are concentrated on pokemon where if you are about to hit them, you increase the likelihood of capture. Which is literally Pokemon Go mechanics. You could have Goh study such spots and have that as his specialty which would at least be more interesting than just lobbing pokeballs at pokemon and praying. Crystal's motivations were also so much better than Goh's (being that of getting recruited by Professor Oak to catch all Pokemon to fill the dex in exchange for Oak funding the orphanage she looks out for) which both explains why she doesn't really bond with the pokemon she catches and just the general progression of catching Pokemon for research as a Professor assistant makes sense. I mean I guess Sonia already fills in role for Professor assistant but if they made Goh realise his Pokemon captures could help with studying pokemon or becoming a Professor in the future it would make it better than him just deciding to collect every pokemon on a whim and boxing them. Like isnt he a research fellow for Professor Cerise or smth? and its just so frustrating cause There is Literally a pre exisiting character doing this trope that was executed brilliantly and they wrote Goh... (which also has a whole arc w Suicune)

I don't think Goh ruined the anime, but he was very mishandled, his goal was weak, alot of his captures fell like after thoughts or not deserved, not giving him any chance to bond with his pokemon, and most of them being sidelined by the galar starters (especially Grookey...ugh). Honestly Journeys as a whole was just a mess, especially with regions ( poor galar).
I don’t hate Goh I just don’t like that 90% of the episodes were Goh Focused while the only ash focused episodes we got were PWC Episodes, like at least 9 episodes that were focused on ash’s Pokemon, and that’s it. Meaning we could have gotten way more episodes dedicated to ash if Goh wasn’t the main focus when this is supposed to be Ash’s final series

I’ve watched the entirety of Zactoshi’s Sword & Shield series, and got to say… can’t believe he does it a lot better than the games story has to offer, and did what Journeys failed to do, represent the Galar region as a whole! Now can’t wait for his Scarlet & Violet series to continue on later!
Tbh all the pokemon anime companions were enjoyable but the least enjoyable were especially these 2 which were Goh and Chloe. The sun and moon cast had more than double the amount of companions from the trial captains of akala, to Lillie and gladion, kiawe and Sophicles. But despite the large cast all of them had lovable funny traits especially kiawe. Honestly if this was gonna be ash’s last series (ik a lot of people are gonna hate me for this) but having an old companion like Gary, Brock, Sophicles, Serena, or even Iris or Cilan would have been great. All of them each had a way better relationship with ash than goh or Chloe ever had.
You forgot to mention the fact that he caught a freaking Suicine with a regular Pokeball when it took Ash till Sun and Moon for his first legendary! His character goes everything against what the anime had established: you should have a bond with the pokemon you catch cause it will make you stronger. His presence was just a big slap to the face, IMO😮💨
correct me if i'm wrong, but in japan the common curtesy for receiving a complement is to be "humble", and deny the complement, while wearing their appreciation on their expression. pretty sure that's why characters can tend to get flustered over complements in anime.
My biggest gripe with goh is that he is basically overpowered at everything he proposes and he doesnt put anything good into the series that other characters dont do, the fact that a normal pokeball unironically becomes a masterball at his hands is insane, ash struggled so much trying to catch pokemons without battling particularly in the first episode and then goh basically a ground 0 trainer does it first try, and dont get me started at the fact that basically mid season go almost caught a zapdos, imagine that happening with ash, he catching a Legendary pokemon who can alter the balance of the natural world mid season, besides goh is a terrible companionship, he has no reason to go with ash other than they are friends, killing the pacing of the series, and dont get me started on how he basically befriended eternatus, an extraterrestial pokemon that could destroy galar and he is just a good guy when goh catches him giving ash and leon a free dynamax, goh could be gone from journeys and the series would be better, the only good thing about goh is his cinderace, it was funny and one of the best pokemon in the series but they could just make ash caught cinderace instead
The anime about Pokemon Journers feels rushed too (just like Pokemon Sword and Shield in the game), like the episode not really having arc having many fillers that is boring (there a few exceptions like Ash Lucario and Goh Cinderace adventure after evolving battling against Mewtwo and Eternatus plus Team Rose villain, after that they have become best friends to the point where Cinderace cheers to Lucario in semifinal of Ash vs Cynthia because I like that one) and when they do its feels like the wants to be done like on 4 episodes at maximum (Just look at the Darkest day and Project Mew), Galar region dont have that much of a screen time compare to the others regions in the anime, I dont mind Goh is just that the writters makes Ash feels like a side character in the beggning focusing more on Goh when is Ash final jouneys (They should make the Ash and Dawn style adventure about Ash and Goh or Ash showing Goh how it feels to be a great Pokemon trainer just like Ash shows to May)
He ditched Ash’s little arse just to see if he can find and try to catch Mew instead of just being there for moral support after how much they’ve been through on their journey. And what’s worse is that Chloe just suddenly shows up to see Ash’s competition against Leon even she was just barely there. I mean Dawn being there makes sense since she and Ash are like besties, as for Chloe like are you for real? Taking Goh’s place to see Ash’s final competition, NAH MAN! That’s just ain’t right… 💀💀💀

Why didn't Ashs mom and Oak arrive to cheer him on along with the Og Kanto gang. Then after the competition was finished there was a small celebration scene. Why couldn't we do something like a champion ball or dinner for Ash. It didn't feel special. It was like here is your trophy. Now get out. All of this happened because we had to rush to Goh. L move by the anime.

Hating on Goh for shipping makes no sense and is something I've barely seen. Just saying, shipping Ash with Serena is way more prominent and a lot of people don't really bat an eye at that
I never personally cared much for Goh, mainly because I found him to be boring. A big problem with Goh, and in my opinion the biggest reason why his goal of "catching them all" ultimately comes down to one major thing: the Pokemon that Ash and each of his various companions caught over the course of the series are characters in their own respects, and Goh owning such a huge number of them despite only appearing in one series of the anime as a whole meant that many of them didn't get to be as memorable because they didn't get much characterization. This is particularly problematic with Suicune, in my opinion: this is a Legendary Pokemon, so catching it should've been a MUCH bigger deal than it ultimately was, but not only did it not get to do much after being caught (even though you'd think they would want to do something important or cool with it, because, you know, it's a freaking LEGENDARY POKEMON), but Goh catching it should've been treated as holding more weight than it ultimately did, again, because it is a Legendary Pokemon. Because of this, seeing Goh catch it so easily and randomly not only felt unexciting because it was more or less treated just like any other random Pokemon Goh caught, but it felt underutilized, and therefore could've effortlessly been not added to Journeys because it's capture didn't make a significant difference in the end. To go off on a side tangent quickly, Pokemon being characters is also the same reason why unlike with most people, I'm happy Ash didn't catch the Latias that appeared at the end of the series, because it wouldn't have served much purpose, and doing so would only amount to giving Ash another glorified trophy in the form of a Legendary Pokemon that would do nothing to advance his character in any way; not to mention that Latias wouldn't be seen again after the fact because the series was ending at that point, kind of similar to his Torracat's evolution into Incineroar, really. Looking back at Goh, though, the other major problem I have with him is that, as was mentioned in this video, he more or less got half of the focus because he was made the secondary protagonist -- that said, this idea could've worked, but only if it were done earlier in the series, as that way, Ash and Goh could've each gotten more time to work towards their respective goals and develop as characters more, something that Ash got far more time to do than Goh because he was the main protagonist and had been in the anime since day one. That in mind, the reason why I feel this is a problem is because the series should've focused more on Ash and his goal of defeating Leon and becoming the World Champion: not only is it a more substantial goal with bigger stakes riding on it than simply "catching them all", but even with that aside, Ash being the main protagonist that we the viewers have been following the journey of for over 20 years at that point means that people were going to be more invested in seeing Ash achieve his goal than they would be with Goh, and this is reflected in Ash actually managing to become the World Champion to cap off his long career, while Goh, by contrast, never actually got to catch Mew, despite that being his primary objective throughout all of Journeys. It's for these reasons, I think, why people generally don't like Goh very much, and they are pretty valid in my opinion: Goh was a pretty underwhelming secondary protagonist that took screentime away from the character the audience would rather be the main focus, and he wasn't even allowed to achieve his goal despite becoming the secondary protagonist, which kind of makes his inclusion feel pointless to me at the end of the day.
That Suicune capture made me very, VERY angry to this day! Journeys just blatantly disrespects Legendaries and how they are supposed to be treated. Honestly, the first time Ash encounters Suicune and it helped Ash in the fourth movie was a great moment for it, makes it worthy of being catch by Ash. Suicune’s been my most favorite out of the Legendary Beast of Johto, but seeing that some low-level trainer like Goh captured it and caught it feels like an insult!
The issue I have with Goh is that it felt like the writers didn’t know what to do with him once Raboot evolved into Cinderace, while there are moments with him after that point but had they send him off after that arc was done and given that to another character like Chole or to Ash’s journeys team to put them more in the spotlight. The series may have been more well liked.
I didn't like him on the bases that he was a Mary sue on catching Pokemon and that he caught a legendary with a normal pokeball I know that they only use normal pokeballs almost all the time now but still seeing a legendary being caught in a normal poke ball hurts a bit.
Goh started out great as a femboy who had a crush on Ash since they never went anywhere with the girl that season her eevee was useless since eevee got nothing in gen 9. But then they turned him into a bro which is just a lamer version of Ash which made his character useless
The answer is yes goh not only hurts pokémon journeys he was the weakest companion and his goal would be as and him just magically throwing pokeballs without barely babbling any pokémon and actually capturing them with BS We knew it was BS when he was able to capture sweet cool and then sweet cool and allowed him to keep him as ownership absolutely not No I mean he was capturing pokémon left and right like it was a fire sale then his pokémon who barely had battle were evolving quicker than Ash's pokémon who were battling right It just didn't make any sense what should have happened for journeys is we should have got one of those new trainers from the gallery region or like the last season aimed to be a master brought back old companions and let Ash in the old companions go on their journey while he does his little world championship stuff We could have easily brought back May or you know you could have brought back Misty and brought for this entire series and it would have been better because at least they would have went around the world traveling learning stuff Misty could you like gym battles different location like oh I got a call for a trainer who wants a challenge me and while Ash's training in this region the trainer could meet Misty there and she can have a battle show off how much she's learned as a water gym leader need to have rock show off his doctor breeding skills that would have been better because I don't know what the hell Goh was he was waste of time and a waste

Okay, I absolutely adored Goh and his character to bits, I really don’t think all the hate towards him was necessary. I found myself deeply relating to his character and backstory. His friendship with Ash was absolutely adorable and I also love his English va! But I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times where I was frustrated with the series. I feel like they gave Goh too much attention for a series where Ash is the main character, Pokemon Journeys sometimes made it look like Goh was the main character. They definitely focused on Goh a lot more throughout the series until the Masters Eight tournament. I wouldn’t go as far to say he RUINED Journeys, I really did enjoy watching him and I’m genuinely upset we won’t see him anymore, he had heart and was so passionate about his goal (even tho it was a bit basic) I feel like with all the attention Goh got, maybe they could’ve given him a little spin off series because as I watched Journeys it honestly felt like Ash was the traveling companion instead of Goh 😭😭. Journeys had SO. MUCH. POTENTIAL. Yes I enjoyed it, but it was very flawed and I do wish it was handled differently. Goh was a good character in my opinion, he just was handled very poorly. But on the bright side, he got a much better story and character development than poor Chole JUSTICE FOR HER!!
The one Pokemon I hated that Goh got was Grookey. Primarily because it came from Team Rocket's capsule thing, they kind of owe him for the years of harassment
Pokemon had worked so hard over the years to beat the whole "Mighty Morphin' Michael Vick thing, emphasizing the bond between Pokemon and trainer. Hell, I don't think a single one of Ash's Pokemon were caught in the "traditional" way since Johto! Every time a cast member got a new Pokemon, there was a whole episode dedicated to showing them bond and ending with the Pokemon agreeing to join the team. And then THIS little turd shows up and starts throwing Pokeballs like a friggin' Gatling gun at every Pokemon he sees, all while shouting that his goal is to catch Mew of all things.
So you took quite litterally a 2 segment part of the video and said, "Yep, that was the main issue with the character. Let's ignore all his other points for sure". Great analysis 👍

I remember conversing with a friend back when Journey's was in full swing, mainly because the unbridled borderline psychotic hate for Goh used to make me so mad. What made me more irate besides the randos wishing Goh would die or get Covid, was the fact Goh had such wasted potential and he could have been great had the writers actually tried to work with his goal. You can still have Goh want to catch them all up to Mew, have him even get a few easy captures up until he faces Zapdos. Now here's where they could have played into Goh's intended purpose of catching them all. Before Zapdos have him use Poke, Great and Ultra balls when the time called for it. Ultra during the raid with Golurk, Poke and Great for unevolved and slightly stronger Pokemon so people wouldn't be as upset he caught them. Then the Zapdos battle happens and Goh realizes he isn't strong enough to handle Legendary Pokemon yet and like Ash did when he lost constantly to Bea, have Goh be in a bit of a rut on how he can grow stronger in his own way. He's no battler, he knows this so how can he utilize optimizing his catching to make up where he lacks in battles? Easy, bring back Kurt. Imagine they go to Johto for one of Ash's matches and as Goh watches he sees a trainer with a different Pokeball to the ones he's been using thus far, he takes note of it and after the battle is over asks the trainer what Pokeball are they using as he's never seen it before. They can say they got it from Kurt as he makes Pokeballs out of Apricorns. Boom, now set up some episodes where Goh mentors under Kurt to allow him some more knowledge on how to craft them himself as well as exposing Goh to the wonders of other types of Pokeballs. Hell when they meet up with the Alola siblings again, have Goh note Gladion's whole team have different Pokeballs and Gladion can explain the choice for the heal ball with Umbreon (this could be right before the Mohn stuff like on the way to him so not to mess up too much of their story beats). Now Goh can start really thinking about having some strategy to catching Pokemon. Now the big issue is, legendaries, how do they work in Goh's goal? Easy, have him catch and then release them. They can challange him in a way, to test if he's pure of heart and his goal to understand Mew isn't one of evil intent. Have them test his wit and strengths similar to project mew but it's the Pokemon who are teaching him in the skills he's lacking. No balance can be rocked if he just lets them go in the end. They teach him more about the world he lives in, he's got their data in the Pokedex and he's that much closer to being a better battler and trainer as he starts relying on a mix of his Pokemon and the pokeballs he's using. Goh was literally set up to be the poster child for Pokeball types, with his desire to catch them all it would have been fun to see how he got creative with the Pokeballs he learned to make or found in specific locations throughout the regions as most of the special balls like Quick and Dusk can't be found just anywhere so it would be interesting to see how he'd manage catches and team building to better his chances and further his goal.
My issue with Goh, is that they wrote him to be a main character besides Ash throughout Journeys. He was a walking advertisement for a mobile game that dwindled in popularity. It's also insane how he basically has a 100% catch rate, because that Suicune catch was still the most BS thing to happen. I just feel like Ash should have been the standalone main character of his farewell season, but they gave Goh too much focus for me to even care about watching Journeys and I just didn't really like him after how he treated Scorbunny in the beginning. The only best thing about Goh is his Pokemon on hand. Because Scorbunny/Raboot/Cinderace were the best thing ever and I loved Cinderace's interactions with Ash's Lucario. But yeah, just screw Goh. xD
To be Fair I kinda like the fact that Ash didn't get a Starter this time it gave more room to Experiment with his Team! To Bad they made his Journeys Team so BORING! Seriously this is Ash's least Impressive Team by Far! and from what I've seen from SM Team that's kinda saying something.

the only thing i hate about journeys is how horrible they wrote chloe's character. Like she is one of my favorite characters, and yes i know that's probably rare to hear someone say that, but i just hate how little she showed up in journeys and how they basically just sidelined her to just promote eeveeloutons. They sidelined her so badly that she even had an official battle with Ash and it was off screen! I would have loved to have seen that battle, but alas i never will. She's a great character just written poorly
Bro Hop would've been so much cooler like Ash being a mentor to Hop and when Hop got down in the dumps after his loss to Bea it would've been cool for Ash to strengthen Hop and Have battle Ash and Made even surprise him once and beat him!

I was agreeing with you up until the Shipping 💀 And your explanation made it worse, when people shipped ash with a lot and i mean A LOT of girls you guys were fine with it but when he was shipped with a boy the argument suddenly became "he's just a kid". Plus Serena was always flustered when Ash complimented her (even at times he didn't) and I love Serena but this is totally the same scenario and you guys are just uncomfortable with it being two boys
I started out skeptical about Goh, but, and there are probably some really amazing fanfics partly at fault, I started to really like him as a person. And no, the fanfiction I love the most (in which Ash and Goh are portrayed to be teenagers btw, in that series Ash does age) isn't a shipping fic. I do like the ship, but I don't read any nsfw content anyways, and most fanfiction authors do write it as if Ash does age about one year per series and match Gohs age or make him one or two years younger than Ash. Btw, the fanfic that made me really love Goh is called A dozen roses on the pavement and is part of a series called Looking into the eyes of a megalomaniac, and it focusses on giving some of the villains, mostly Lusamine and Chairman Rose, a better character arc and on Ashs Aura abilities. It's on AO3, I really recommend it.

I didn't hate Goh, but I dispised how much screentime he was given during Ash's final journey (as the main character) only for him to NOT achieve his endgame; catching Mew! TBH his goal of catching em' all wasn't all that ridiculous considering that was Ash's goal in the beginning of the series. Gary Oak was kind of the perfect rival for Goh when you really think about it. Gary was about catching em' first and asking questions later. Don't forget that bro had over 200 Pokemon before he entered the Indigo League! Goh would've done better had Gary appeared earlier in Journeys to inform him of Project Mew. He could've been the reason Goh stopped catching for quantity and focused on training some of the Pokemon he had to build a strong team in order to confront Mew towards the end of the series. Heck, or even pull a Gary once more by rotating his team so he has a strong squad rather than simply a team of 6. By traveling with Ash, he could then further see the purpose of building strong bonds with your Pokemon. I'd say Goh wasn't a lost cause like Chloe in terms of wasted potential. However, to have him eat up more of the plot with his catching stuff rather than Ash building bonds with his Journeys team or having PWC matches was hard to deal with... Regardless of how the masses felt about the character, I thought it was a darn shame to NOT have Goh be there in person to watch Ash vs. Leon! WTF was the reasoning for having Chloe there instead of the traveling companion who actually TRAVELED with Ash in this particular series?! Geez, the only reason I don't completely dispise this character is because he's voiced by the same person who does Remy from Big City Greens...

Also, at least from my experience, Goh shipping wasn't really something I saw many people who hate Goh concern themselves with, because it wasn't really a prominent character trait at all. And I was fortunate enough to not have it forced on me by "some members of the community". Personally, the only character that I feel was affected by the shipping fiasco, it's prolly Serena. I don't see how shipping ever came into play for any companion's identity other than Serena. And yeah, it's weird, to put it EXTREMELY lightly. But Pokemon is surprisingly unfiltered when it comes to these things. Remember how many Pokemon have a crush on Ash? Yeah, probably a good thing he's retired from the anime now...
He didn't just ruin Journeys but stupid choices of writers did. Ash's new Pokemon are magically just born and they're strongest team he had. Ash going from winning Alola league which James from TR is Top 8 to becoming strongest trainer in the world. Ash not using older Pokemon. PWC being bad especially Masters 8. Iris becoming champion despite not having any dream of that. He wanted to become Dragon master. If so, why didn't Misty become Champion? She was "older" than Iris. Just because is Iris in the game, doesn't mean she should've become champion. Plus it is also soon. Also, not enough Galar region. Goh had some contribution like catching Legendary, catch mons left and right and being in 2 episodes in which Ash and Pikachu didn't appear. But it is mostly making Ahs unbeatable, after winning no offense trash league that most characters from past would do that with Z Move/Mega. I mean Gladion is strong but not stronger than upgraded older rivals.

But if you give Ash win against Gladion in a league that is - let's be honest not good system wise. Don't get me wrong, Gladion is strong trainer but not even close to E4 and in Journeys because of that you go: "Alright, Ash should beat Leon!" That is really stupid.
I think what made me dislike Goh the most was the constant pokemon catching. past protagonists bonded with the pokes they caught and made it feel special in the anime. Goh was way too much like the players and just threw a ball at anything and then stored em in a PC.. It felt way too close to home to a lotta people i feel, and it's kinda hard to see in a protagonist character.

Meltan debuted just to promote both Go and Let's Go, which by then in the anime, it's the final season (debuted in the anime in 2019, after the Let's Go Eevee arc aka Lana's Eevee and the Ultra Necrozma arc).

Goh annoys me so much, he’s a character that feels like he runs on pure dumb luck. The show alright isn’t amazing, and Goh makes it 10x worse.
I think one of the main problems with Goh is simply breaking the laws of Pokémon itself. Since every single time Ash tried to catch a Pokemon without battling it, that he didn’t befriend beforehand or wasn’t a weak little bug, it didn’t work, besides one exception, and Ash would be called out on how stupid that was, meanwhile that just kind of works for Goh. Like he isn’t even using different types of pokeballs which would at least make more sense as to why it was easier (especially since the one time Ash caught a non bug type without battling or befriending, was Totodile, WITH A LURE BALL)
The Safari Zone is the only other exception I can think of where all 30 balls worked to get Tauros, but that is a unique situation that does not apply here at all
Goh was a'ight though I liked his Pokemon more than him.
Honestly it would have been cool if Gary was Ash's traveling companion this time in his final (as of currently) journey

All of which by the way can be done by other companion characters and with less obnoxious comments and more actual knowledgeable advice. Not to mention has zero Pokemon at all. In before you say, " ah but he was kid!", Bonney says hi. She has done way more while also being the same age as Max. Heck there is Elite Four member in Paldea, Poppy that is younger than him that is more competent than him. Also Ash is ten years old which means he is also a kid along with others known to be his exact age. Goh at least can back up his Pokemon knowledge, can use & catch Pokemon, cook, knows how to use tactics well, and never acts bigger than he is. Face it Max is the most useless companion.

My personal beef with Gou is the fact that he got ALL three starters. I honestly hate the fact that they gave Ash two random Kanto Pokémon and a Sinnoh Pokémon which leave him with two ACTUAL new Pokémon being Sirfetch'd and Dracovish. At least with Gengar I can understand cause it can Gigantamax but Lucario and Dragonite shouldn’t be with him at all. Like Inteleon or Rillaboom would have been really cool secondary aces but Lucario feels so forced upon him that I can’t really like it that much.

Goh getting all the Starters is a Problem yes. But the Bigger Problem is Not showing off Galar! Lucario is something he should've gotten a long time ago; that Aura Sphere Rilou back in Shinnoh or in Kalos for Mega Evolution! Dragonite Safari Zone episode or when he got his 8th Badge from Clair since that Dratini was meant to represent the Gift one from GS games!

The thing is Gengar and Lucario aren’t really random. Gengar is a callback to his Haunter who he gave to Sabrina. It’s like a what if he kept it and evolved it moment. But it’s fully evolved…
And Ash knows aura sensing from the Lucario movie (on which make that movie canon) and used it with Greninja later on. It makes sense for him to have one of his own. Not random.
Now Dragonite was random, but I think it fits well as an Ash Pokémon. Exactly his style of attack with Dragon Dance to boost Attack and Speed.

Not gonna lie, I feel like both Goh and Chloe ruined Pokémon Journeys. The entire series was wasted potential and a flat out joke but the shipping, OMG that was the worse. That was terrible but I get kinda understand it somewhat like 3% of it because Chloe was supposed to be the main girl for Pokémon Journeys but like she barely had any screen time and even when she did had screen time, it's like she was there just to be there, it literally sounded like Chloe was just a random ass character that was nothing special because she had no goal, she never had her Eevee evolve, and she barely had any character development because throughout the series, she's just a shy and introverted girl with no dreams at all

My issue is Goh is because of his impact on the series in general. Ever since the beginning of the Pokemon anime, we got to experience Ash and his friends travel together with their pokemon. Whether it was playing, arguing, training or exploring we got to experience that and feel a connection with everyone even the ones that didn't a lot of attention like Boldore, Palpitoad, gible, etc. But with Goh he sort takes that connection away. It's not Goh catching so many pokemon that's the problem; it's the fact most of these captures feel like a checklist for a collection instead of companions that you bond with.The biggest proof of how horrible Goh's impact on the anime is the Galar Starters themselves. These are by far the worst any of the regional starters have ever been handled. Cinderace, who I'd like to remind everyone was the reason Goh wanted to catch every single pokemon out there, was goh’s first ever Pokemon and they rushed its evolution when they could've done so much more like having Raboot be more disobedient because Goh wanted to catch more pokemon instead of improving on the pokemon that he did have. And to add insult to injury, it was replaced when goh caught sobble, and then left to rot along with the other worthless captures when it fully evolved unless necessary. Sobble spends its time hiding and running instead of acutally trying to become more courageous, its evolution as drizzile was in a cave and never bothered showin up for a major appearance or development until its final evolution. And grookey was the absolute worst out of all of them. It was just the generic comic relief starter that follows Dawn's Piplup, without any significant to its name. It didn’t even get use more than 2 moves. In fact, most of its time that it spends, it usually causes problems like the Spiritomb possessing Ash or Falinks getting seperated. I don't feel any connection with Goh and his pokemon. What I DO feel is the writers forcibily shoving the idea of Goh having a strong bond with his Pokemon down my throat by mostly saying it without actually showing it. It just doesn't work out for anyone.
The problem is, Goh's goal can never be accomplished as long as Pokémon still makes new generations, that's why I like rewrites of Pokémon Journeys that make him want to be a Pokémon Professor since those lean more into his want to learn more about Pokémon

Let's be real here, an even bigger reason that Goh's goal was impossible from the start is because the entire Porygon line is (unjustly) perma-banned from the anime, so even if new Pokemon stopped being discovered one day and he was able to slowly catch up, it ultimately wouldn't matter. He's unironically more likely to catch Arceus, then somehow travel to a parallel universe and catch a SHINY Arceus too, than he is to ever so much as SEE a Porygon.

I feel like Journeys as a concept really screwed over Galar and the characters and Pokémon released. Horizons is partially cleaning up the mess, debuting character not seen like Kabu. Pokémon that never got to debut in Journeys like Boltund, Rolycoly, Carkoal, Poltergeist, Barraskewda…all debut in Horizions. Boltund, Blitbug, and Corvisquire debut as minor background characters. Poltergeist and Carkoal are Pokémon on the ship. Rolycoly debuts with Kabu, but you would think Sizzlipede (a Pokémon catchable in his own gym!!!) makes its debut…no…gets no debut.
Porygon-2, Porygon/
-Z, Acrtovish, Kubfu, Dracozolt only get a brief image. Barraskewda gets absolutely nothing, I’m hopeful Kofu can change that. A lot of other Galar Pokémon debut only beside a trainer for a short scene, like Pinchurchin. And some only debut because of the Gatcha Machine. What happened to the episode that focused on highlighting each mons characteristic. And don’t get me started on the Husui bunch. It’s ridiculous.
Even the important gym leaders and DLC characters are not safe. No Milo, Nessa, Gordie, Melony…where? No gym challenges?
They changed the formula and it didn’t work. They made Goh the center of attention and they traveled region to region so he can collect them all and gather research. His goal was executed poorly. We see no struggles besides Dewgong on captures. Where is the growth of skill when he apparently has hacks in his DNA. Project Mew was a cool concept, but it made Goh the main character while Ash sidelines. Two protagonists clashing each others screentime. Goh should of honestly gotten his own show or something, maybe there would be more storytelling to make him less bland. Them being based in Kanto and wasting time there instead of maybe…the new region!
Nothing in Journeys felt deserved. Ash progressing in battles with cheap plot armor like Ash vs. Drasna, Ash vs. Raihan, Ash vs. Volkner (Motor Drive issue), Ash vs. Steven (Redirecting its Z move’s bolts after Metagross used Agility and dodged the attack). Pokémon that were unfazed or tanked damage well fall to one or two moves. Ash removing Cotton Gaurd’s Defense boost with soaking Altaria in water? Meteor Assault on a Dragon/Fairy is enough to faint it?
Catches don’t feel as earned. We needed more Flygon and Golurk capture moments. Actually fighting the target.
Battles feel forced and he don’t struggle enough. We needed to see more of the octopus/squid smackdown. Progression that felts earned, not forced.
Journeys is pretty flawed…. One of the worse modern Pokémon ever . Style I liked but everything else 🫠

goh is a product of bad writing, and bad writing is always the killer. The issue is that goh's position, and his goal even though its the literal point of the series tag line none of it feels earned. Its a insult compared to having this being ash's LAST season which you made a point of.
"Ruined" may be a strong word, but if you want to consider every other cameo and characters that coulda used the screen time to expand that we didn't get enough of (or) fans wanted more of. Then yes, he did ruin journeys.

Yes. Goh was such an annoyance for me, I was never someone that cared too much for doing the Pokedex, so a character with a dream of completing the dex would be something that I wouldn't really care, but I also never care for the pokémon contests in game but I adored them in anime, that's why I love Dawn, May, not Serena. But the anime could do something cool with a mechanic that I don't care about, unfortunately they didn't. Goh was annoying and frustrating, after all he was capturing several pokémon every episode, but what makes he frustrating, at least for me, is that many of the pokémon he got, were all pokémon that I would love to see Ash using, like the Cinderace, Flygon and Scizor and etc. I would prefer personally if Goh had some episodes for him, but we had way more for the old ash companions, like... WE DID NOT SEE MAY OR MAX IN THE ANIME WTF. Oh and captured legendaries, what for me always is a bad thing I always believe that no pokémon Trainer in the anime should have a legendary pokémon, no matter the excuse, legendary s should be only be able to be captured in the games
Just so you know, the true reason why May didn't make an appearence in Pokemon Journeys is because her Japanese VA had received a health problem that prevented her from handling VA work. So if that person couldn't voice that character, then that character wasn't going to appear in the show because of the rule that characters who get created in by people in Japan aren't allowed to be recasted unlike characters who get created by people in other countries. They were thinking that if that VA got well before Journeys ended then they would have May show up in it, but that VA didn't.

It's not Goh that ruined Journeys. It was terrible pacing, writing, inconsistent screen sharing with Ash, lazy recap episodes, Goh's Gary Stew ability to catch power that he won't use, and subpar animation that ruined Journeys. Ash's final hurrah felt like it was somewhat half robbed because of Goh's inclusion and incessant need to catch stuff. So many character interactions, lessons, and development could have been had with Goh being the newbie foil. But instead we were supposed to be satisfied with all that sloppy development with a touch of Mew's butt. Goh is a part of why Journeys felt lack luster, but he's not the main one.
Its Not that Goh Ruined Journeys or that he's a Terrible MC, its Not even his Goal being simplistic seeing someone trying to catch them all is Refreshing I think. Its that Project Mew comes out of Nowhere and Lessens the character even Further! We even see that Shiny Hunter guy, would've like to see Ash Trade Noctowl to him then maybe Trade back or something just to help out.

Yeah I still argue that making Ash leave on Journeys was a bad idea. And the ending was pretty uninteresting. I really like Riko, Roy and Dot (especially Riko and Dot), but Ash should have went to Paldea and met Nemona. These two would share one braincell and it would be great.

It feels like Goh was written to be only primarily in the first season and then not show up as often but the writers got a call from corporate that basically said: “Yeah he has to be in the entire show…too bad we’ve already done this type of thing for the other companions…that’s not our problem figure it out.”
Personally I lover Goh in journeys because I was always extremely frustrated with ash not focusing on catching Pokémon, only battles. So I felt more represented with Goh and I enjoyed that he brought some fresh air to the stale pokemon anime formula.

Besides people over exaggerate Goh catching a legendary, when Brandon, Tobias, a Nurse Joy, that Alt.Universe Zeraora guy and Ash himself has cought a Legendary or mythical. Heck there is a random background character with Heatran. Granted Heatran is not that popular, but still legendary. Meanwhile Ash has Nagandel which is an Ultra Beast, Melmetal a mythical and Legendary in Solgaleo. The last one counts as both the The Pokemon Company and anime treat as a capture of his. Even being included in Pikachu's mid battle motivating dream sequence showing all of Ash's Pokemon.
In my head I always see Chloe as both a main character and recurring since there was no new female travelling companion in the journeys series. So she’s the closest thing.

Chloe's problem was more than anything the fact that she didn't get to have the same kind of focus and attention put into her character because Ash and Goh were treated as the 2 main protagonists for Journeys, likely because they are boys and Pokemon is more associated with being for boys than it is girls. That said, Chloe was interesting when she was first introduced, as they could've built on her not liking Pokemon more and maybe doing something with that, but she got shafted because it apparently would've been too much work to write a third main character into the cast. They could've even possibly given her more screentime in place of the filler that Journeys is known for -- even if her plots were still mostly filler themselves, they could've still been used to give her something more to do instead of largely treating her like she didn't exist. And while she did get some resolution to her character at the end of Journeys, and I personally do think it makes some sense for her, given her main goal was to find out why her Eevee wouldn't evolve, it's still a problem because it mostly comes out of nowhere, and only seems like it was done because the writers suddenly remembered at the last minute that they needed to give her storyline some closure, too. There's also the fact that we never got to learn why exactly her Eevee was unable to evolve, which in my opinion is the biggest disappointment with Chloe as a whole, because it shows that the writers cared that little about her so as to just brush it off and hope no one would notice or care

Even as an Aureliashipper (AshxLillie) I do agree, but there are exceptions that I go by:
1) Have the characters aged up, or have them get together during/after a time skip.
2) Only have the characters have crushes on each other, but not dating.
You know what i also find a bit annoying, is, as someone who would say they’re more socially conservative on the latest wave of politics (i.e the last 5-10 years), I find it kinda like its a forced political message when some fans try to make every bloody character something within the lgbtq+ community..

@@Brody9592I do see Goh as queer, but it is weird to try to argue that it's canon, because it's almost definitely not. 90% of the time, the character is canonically straight, and though you can see the character as x sexuality, it will never be real.
Feels like Goh's execution was just disappointing especially cause Pokemon did do the whole "catch every Pokemon archetype" in the manga with Crystal. And it was done so much better in the manga because she actually used mechanics of the game, like using different balls for different scenarios (level ball/fast ball/lure ball) and even having pokemon on her team meant to help with catching pokemon (smoochum for mean look, parasect for spore, cubone for false swipe) Like I get that Goh was supposed to be based off Pokemon Go which doesn't have all these mechanics (and also hence why the separation of battling vs catching when its pretty much both needed in the main series) but that just limits him so much. Heck even if you did want the Pokemon Go route, the manga also had a scene where Silver told Gold about "energy spots" that are concentrated on pokemon where if you are about to hit them, you increase the likelihood of capture. Which is literally Pokemon Go mechanics. You could have Goh study such spots and have that as his specialty which would at least be more interesting than just lobbing pokeballs at pokemon and praying.
Crystal's motivations were also so much better than Goh's (being that of getting recruited by Professor Oak to catch all Pokemon to fill the dex in exchange for Oak funding the orphanage she looks out for) which both explains why she doesn't really bond with the pokemon she catches and just the general progression of catching Pokemon for research as a Professor assistant makes sense. I mean I guess Sonia already fills in role for Professor assistant but if they made Goh realise his Pokemon captures could help with studying pokemon or becoming a Professor in the future it would make it better than him just deciding to collect every pokemon on a whim and boxing them. Like isnt he a research fellow for Professor Cerise or smth?
and its just so frustrating cause There is Literally a pre exisiting character doing this trope that was executed brilliantly and they wrote Goh... (which also has a whole arc w Suicune)

I don't think Goh ruined the anime, but he was very mishandled, his goal was weak, alot of his captures fell like after thoughts or not deserved, not giving him any chance to bond with his pokemon, and most of them being sidelined by the galar starters (especially Grookey...ugh). Honestly Journeys as a whole was just a mess, especially with regions ( poor galar).
This series was basically almost a waste of time for me.

I don’t hate Goh I just don’t like that 90% of the episodes were Goh Focused while the only ash focused episodes we got were PWC Episodes, like at least 9 episodes that were focused on ash’s Pokemon, and that’s it. Meaning we could have gotten way more episodes dedicated to ash if Goh wasn’t the main focus when this is supposed to be Ash’s final series

I’ve watched the entirety of Zactoshi’s Sword & Shield series, and got to say… can’t believe he does it a lot better than the games story has to offer, and did what Journeys failed to do, represent the Galar region as a whole! Now can’t wait for his Scarlet & Violet series to continue on later!

Tbh all the pokemon anime companions were enjoyable but the least enjoyable were especially these 2 which were Goh and Chloe. The sun and moon cast had more than double the amount of companions from the trial captains of akala, to Lillie and gladion, kiawe and Sophicles. But despite the large cast all of them had lovable funny traits especially kiawe. Honestly if this was gonna be ash’s last series (ik a lot of people are gonna hate me for this) but having an old companion like Gary, Brock, Sophicles, Serena, or even Iris or Cilan would have been great. All of them each had a way better relationship with ash than goh or Chloe ever had.

You forgot to mention the fact that he caught a freaking Suicine with a regular Pokeball when it took Ash till Sun and Moon for his first legendary! His character goes everything against what the anime had established: you should have a bond with the pokemon you catch cause it will make you stronger. His presence was just a big slap to the face, IMO😮💨
correct me if i'm wrong, but in japan the common curtesy for receiving a complement is to be "humble", and deny the complement, while wearing their appreciation on their expression. pretty sure that's why characters can tend to get flustered over complements in anime.
My biggest gripe with goh is that he is basically overpowered at everything he proposes and he doesnt put anything good into the series that other characters dont do, the fact that a normal pokeball unironically becomes a masterball at his hands is insane, ash struggled so much trying to catch pokemons without battling particularly in the first episode and then goh basically a ground 0 trainer does it first try, and dont get me started at the fact that basically mid season go almost caught a zapdos, imagine that happening with ash, he catching a Legendary pokemon who can alter the balance of the natural world mid season, besides goh is a terrible companionship, he has no reason to go with ash other than they are friends, killing the pacing of the series, and dont get me started on how he basically befriended eternatus, an extraterrestial pokemon that could destroy galar and he is just a good guy when goh catches him giving ash and leon a free dynamax, goh could be gone from journeys and the series would be better, the only good thing about goh is his cinderace, it was funny and one of the best pokemon in the series but they could just make ash caught cinderace instead

The anime about Pokemon Journers feels rushed too (just like Pokemon Sword and Shield in the game), like the episode not really having arc having many fillers that is boring (there a few exceptions like Ash Lucario and Goh Cinderace adventure after evolving battling against Mewtwo and Eternatus plus Team Rose villain, after that they have become best friends to the point where Cinderace cheers to Lucario in semifinal of Ash vs Cynthia because I like that one) and when they do its feels like the wants to be done like on 4 episodes at maximum (Just look at the Darkest day and Project Mew), Galar region dont have that much of a screen time compare to the others regions in the anime, I dont mind Goh is just that the writters makes Ash feels like a side character in the beggning focusing more on Goh when is Ash final jouneys (They should make the Ash and Dawn style adventure about Ash and Goh or Ash showing Goh how it feels to be a great Pokemon trainer just like Ash shows to May)

Why didn't Ashs mom and Oak arrive to cheer him on along with the Og Kanto gang. Then after the competition was finished there was a small celebration scene. Why couldn't we do something like a champion ball or dinner for Ash. It didn't feel special. It was like here is your trophy. Now get out. All of this happened because we had to rush to Goh. L move by the anime.

Hating on Goh for shipping makes no sense and is something I've barely seen. Just saying, shipping Ash with Serena is way more prominent and a lot of people don't really bat an eye at that

I never personally cared much for Goh, mainly because I found him to be boring. A big problem with Goh, and in my opinion the biggest reason why his goal of "catching them all" ultimately comes down to one major thing: the Pokemon that Ash and each of his various companions caught over the course of the series are characters in their own respects, and Goh owning such a huge number of them despite only appearing in one series of the anime as a whole meant that many of them didn't get to be as memorable because they didn't get much characterization. This is particularly problematic with Suicune, in my opinion: this is a Legendary Pokemon, so catching it should've been a MUCH bigger deal than it ultimately was, but not only did it not get to do much after being caught (even though you'd think they would want to do something important or cool with it, because, you know, it's a freaking LEGENDARY POKEMON), but Goh catching it should've been treated as holding more weight than it ultimately did, again, because it is a Legendary Pokemon. Because of this, seeing Goh catch it so easily and randomly not only felt unexciting because it was more or less treated just like any other random Pokemon Goh caught, but it felt underutilized, and therefore could've effortlessly been not added to Journeys because it's capture didn't make a significant difference in the end. To go off on a side tangent quickly, Pokemon being characters is also the same reason why unlike with most people, I'm happy Ash didn't catch the Latias that appeared at the end of the series, because it wouldn't have served much purpose, and doing so would only amount to giving Ash another glorified trophy in the form of a Legendary Pokemon that would do nothing to advance his character in any way; not to mention that Latias wouldn't be seen again after the fact because the series was ending at that point, kind of similar to his Torracat's evolution into Incineroar, really. Looking back at Goh, though, the other major problem I have with him is that, as was mentioned in this video, he more or less got half of the focus because he was made the secondary protagonist -- that said, this idea could've worked, but only if it were done earlier in the series, as that way, Ash and Goh could've each gotten more time to work towards their respective goals and develop as characters more, something that Ash got far more time to do than Goh because he was the main protagonist and had been in the anime since day one. That in mind, the reason why I feel this is a problem is because the series should've focused more on Ash and his goal of defeating Leon and becoming the World Champion: not only is it a more substantial goal with bigger stakes riding on it than simply "catching them all", but even with that aside, Ash being the main protagonist that we the viewers have been following the journey of for over 20 years at that point means that people were going to be more invested in seeing Ash achieve his goal than they would be with Goh, and this is reflected in Ash actually managing to become the World Champion to cap off his long career, while Goh, by contrast, never actually got to catch Mew, despite that being his primary objective throughout all of Journeys. It's for these reasons, I think, why people generally don't like Goh very much, and they are pretty valid in my opinion: Goh was a pretty underwhelming secondary protagonist that took screentime away from the character the audience would rather be the main focus, and he wasn't even allowed to achieve his goal despite becoming the secondary protagonist, which kind of makes his inclusion feel pointless to me at the end of the day.
That Suicune capture made me very, VERY angry to this day! Journeys just blatantly disrespects Legendaries and how they are supposed to be treated. Honestly, the first time Ash encounters Suicune and it helped Ash in the fourth movie was a great moment for it, makes it worthy of being catch by Ash. Suicune’s been my most favorite out of the Legendary Beast of Johto, but seeing that some low-level trainer like Goh captured it and caught it feels like an insult!
The issue I have with Goh is that it felt like the writers didn’t know what to do with him once Raboot evolved into Cinderace, while there are moments with him after that point but had they send him off after that arc was done and given that to another character like Chole or to Ash’s journeys team to put them more in the spotlight. The series may have been more well liked.
I didn't like him on the bases that he was a Mary sue on catching Pokemon and that he caught a legendary with a normal pokeball I know that they only use normal pokeballs almost all the time now but still seeing a legendary being caught in a normal poke ball hurts a bit.

Goh started out great as a femboy who had a crush on Ash since they never went anywhere with the girl that season her eevee was useless since eevee got nothing in gen 9. But then they turned him into a bro which is just a lamer version of Ash which made his character useless
The answer is yes goh not only hurts pokémon journeys he was the weakest companion and his goal would be as and him just magically throwing pokeballs without barely babbling any pokémon and actually capturing them with BS We knew it was BS when he was able to capture sweet cool and then sweet cool and allowed him to keep him as ownership absolutely not No I mean he was capturing pokémon left and right like it was a fire sale then his pokémon who barely had battle were evolving quicker than Ash's pokémon who were battling right It just didn't make any sense what should have happened for journeys is we should have got one of those new trainers from the gallery region or like the last season aimed to be a master brought back old companions and let Ash in the old companions go on their journey while he does his little world championship stuff We could have easily brought back May or you know you could have brought back Misty and brought for this entire series and it would have been better because at least they would have went around the world traveling learning stuff Misty could you like gym battles different location like oh I got a call for a trainer who wants a challenge me and while Ash's training in this region the trainer could meet Misty there and she can have a battle show off how much she's learned as a water gym leader need to have rock show off his doctor breeding skills that would have been better because I don't know what the hell Goh was he was waste of time and a waste

Okay, I absolutely adored Goh and his character to bits, I really don’t think all the hate towards him was necessary. I found myself deeply relating to his character and backstory. His friendship with Ash was absolutely adorable and I also love his English va!
But I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times where I was frustrated with the series. I feel like they gave Goh too much attention for a series where Ash is the main character, Pokemon Journeys sometimes made it look like Goh was the main character.
They definitely focused on Goh a lot more throughout the series until the Masters Eight tournament.
I wouldn’t go as far to say he RUINED Journeys, I really did enjoy watching him and I’m genuinely upset we won’t see him anymore, he had heart and was so passionate about his goal (even tho it was a bit basic)
I feel like with all the attention Goh got, maybe they could’ve given him a little spin off series because as I watched Journeys it honestly felt like Ash was the traveling companion instead of Goh 😭😭.

Pokemon had worked so hard over the years to beat the whole "Mighty Morphin' Michael Vick thing, emphasizing the bond between Pokemon and trainer. Hell, I don't think a single one of Ash's Pokemon were caught in the "traditional" way since Johto! Every time a cast member got a new Pokemon, there was a whole episode dedicated to showing them bond and ending with the Pokemon agreeing to join the team.
And then THIS little turd shows up and starts throwing Pokeballs like a friggin' Gatling gun at every Pokemon he sees, all while shouting that his goal is to catch Mew of all things.

I remember conversing with a friend back when Journey's was in full swing, mainly because the unbridled borderline psychotic hate for Goh used to make me so mad. What made me more irate besides the randos wishing Goh would die or get Covid, was the fact Goh had such wasted potential and he could have been great had the writers actually tried to work with his goal.
You can still have Goh want to catch them all up to Mew, have him even get a few easy captures up until he faces Zapdos. Now here's where they could have played into Goh's intended purpose of catching them all. Before Zapdos have him use Poke, Great and Ultra balls when the time called for it. Ultra during the raid with Golurk, Poke and Great for unevolved and slightly stronger Pokemon so people wouldn't be as upset he caught them.
Then the Zapdos battle happens and Goh realizes he isn't strong enough to handle Legendary Pokemon yet and like Ash did when he lost constantly to Bea, have Goh be in a bit of a rut on how he can grow stronger in his own way. He's no battler, he knows this so how can he utilize optimizing his catching to make up where he lacks in battles?
Easy, bring back Kurt. Imagine they go to Johto for one of Ash's matches and as Goh watches he sees a trainer with a different Pokeball to the ones he's been using thus far, he takes note of it and after the battle is over asks the trainer what Pokeball are they using as he's never seen it before. They can say they got it from Kurt as he makes Pokeballs out of Apricorns. Boom, now set up some episodes where Goh mentors under Kurt to allow him some more knowledge on how to craft them himself as well as exposing Goh to the wonders of other types of Pokeballs. Hell when they meet up with the Alola siblings again, have Goh note Gladion's whole team have different Pokeballs and Gladion can explain the choice for the heal ball with Umbreon (this could be right before the Mohn stuff like on the way to him so not to mess up too much of their story beats). Now Goh can start really thinking about having some strategy to catching Pokemon.
Now the big issue is, legendaries, how do they work in Goh's goal? Easy, have him catch and then release them. They can challange him in a way, to test if he's pure of heart and his goal to understand Mew isn't one of evil intent. Have them test his wit and strengths similar to project mew but it's the Pokemon who are teaching him in the skills he's lacking. No balance can be rocked if he just lets them go in the end. They teach him more about the world he lives in, he's got their data in the Pokedex and he's that much closer to being a better battler and trainer as he starts relying on a mix of his Pokemon and the pokeballs he's using.
Goh was literally set up to be the poster child for Pokeball types, with his desire to catch them all it would have been fun to see how he got creative with the Pokeballs he learned to make or found in specific locations throughout the regions as most of the special balls like Quick and Dusk can't be found just anywhere so it would be interesting to see how he'd manage catches and team building to better his chances and further his goal.

My issue with Goh, is that they wrote him to be a main character besides Ash throughout Journeys. He was a walking advertisement for a mobile game that dwindled in popularity. It's also insane how he basically has a 100% catch rate, because that Suicune catch was still the most BS thing to happen. I just feel like Ash should have been the standalone main character of his farewell season, but they gave Goh too much focus for me to even care about watching Journeys and I just didn't really like him after how he treated Scorbunny in the beginning.
The only best thing about Goh is his Pokemon on hand. Because Scorbunny/Raboot/Cinderace were the best thing ever and I loved Cinderace's interactions with Ash's Lucario. But yeah, just screw Goh. xD

the only thing i hate about journeys is how horrible they wrote chloe's character. Like she is one of my favorite characters, and yes i know that's probably rare to hear someone say that, but i just hate how little she showed up in journeys and how they basically just sidelined her to just promote eeveeloutons. They sidelined her so badly that she even had an official battle with Ash and it was off screen! I would have loved to have seen that battle, but alas i never will. She's a great character just written poorly
Bro Hop would've been so much cooler like Ash being a mentor to Hop and when Hop got down in the dumps after his loss to Bea it would've been cool for Ash to strengthen Hop and Have battle Ash and Made even surprise him once and beat him!

Plus Serena was always flustered when Ash complimented her (even at times he didn't) and I love Serena but this is totally the same scenario and you guys are just uncomfortable with it being two boys
I started out skeptical about Goh, but, and there are probably some really amazing fanfics partly at fault, I started to really like him as a person. And no, the fanfiction I love the most (in which Ash and Goh are portrayed to be teenagers btw, in that series Ash does age) isn't a shipping fic. I do like the ship, but I don't read any nsfw content anyways, and most fanfiction authors do write it as if Ash does age about one year per series and match Gohs age or make him one or two years younger than Ash.
Btw, the fanfic that made me really love Goh is called A dozen roses on the pavement and is part of a series called Looking into the eyes of a megalomaniac, and it focusses on giving some of the villains, mostly Lusamine and Chairman Rose, a better character arc and on Ashs Aura abilities. It's on AO3, I really recommend it.

I didn't hate Goh, but I dispised how much screentime he was given during Ash's final journey (as the main character) only for him to NOT achieve his endgame; catching Mew!
TBH his goal of catching em' all wasn't all that ridiculous considering that was Ash's goal in the beginning of the series. Gary Oak was kind of the perfect rival for Goh when you really think about it. Gary was about catching em' first and asking questions later. Don't forget that bro had over 200 Pokemon before he entered the Indigo League!
Goh would've done better had Gary appeared earlier in Journeys to inform him of Project Mew. He could've been the reason Goh stopped catching for quantity and focused on training some of the Pokemon he had to build a strong team in order to confront Mew towards the end of the series. Heck, or even pull a Gary once more by rotating his team so he has a strong squad rather than simply a team of 6.
By traveling with Ash, he could then further see the purpose of building strong bonds with your Pokemon. I'd say Goh wasn't a lost cause like Chloe in terms of wasted potential. However, to have him eat up more of the plot with his catching stuff rather than Ash building bonds with his Journeys team or having PWC matches was hard to deal with...
Regardless of how the masses felt about the character, I thought it was a darn shame to NOT have Goh be there in person to watch Ash vs. Leon! WTF was the reasoning for having Chloe there instead of the traveling companion who actually TRAVELED with Ash in this particular series?!
