Bud, even over 80, had a power and clarity that is unmatched.

Usually for relatively short pieces such as these, audiences will applaud for a little bit to be polite then it`s on to the next piece. However, in this concert I surmise that everyone there attended to pay homage to not only Mr. Herseth but the entire Chicago brass (plus friends) so consequently clapped much longer after each canzona or sonata in appreciation for their superior musicianship through the years.

I still have my LP of Gabrielli's music played by the combined ensembles of Chicago, Philadelphia and Cleveland. A treat for the ears!

Who needs a conductor? Especially this one. Musicians can always play faster than the dancers can dance, and conductors will always beat it faster than the musicians can play it.

Even back then, you could hear the difference between the players who were putting a musical “spin” on the sound and those who were just using force and tension to try to play louder than everyone else.
