Nice work Gene and friends
Had the opportunity of playing under Dr. Fennell when I was a freshman in college in the early 80's. I cherish that memory.

Fantastic
I worked as Mr. Fennell’s aid-de-camp in 1974. He was an absolute gentleman, quite a fine musician and beyond worthy of all of his accolades. Such a brilliant and kind human-being.
Bud, even over 80, had a power and clarity that is unmatched.
Merry Christmas fans, you are still in time for sharing new Christmas gifts suggestions for the beloved ones, music happenings are still the most wanted ones, spreading good vibes is never enough fans
Great video
I have a CD with Gabrieli´s wonderful - and progressive music - played by Empire Brass. OH...MY...GOD! It is great!
Thrilling.
ありがとうマエストロ❤️💐Thank you, Maestro for everything💐❤️🙏
Even back then, you could hear the difference between the players who were putting a musical “spin” on the sound and those who were just using force and tension to try to play louder than everyone else.
An inane & utterly foolish comment paying mind to neither _concertmeister_ nor conductor.
Well said Dale, you beautiful everything.
When my father died in July 1981 during a conference in Manchester, England , Fred spent several hours with me before my plane left the next day. He became my new father that evening.
Who needs a conductor? Especially this one. Musicians can always play faster than the dancers can dance, and conductors will always beat it faster than the musicians can play it.
First met Fennell in 1965. He was with a man that became my composition teach for a short time - J. Clifton Williams - I was in the Texas All State band and I was amazed! shortly before Fennell died, my wife did an interview with him in Chicago (Midwest). It remains on tape and never released... but it was wonderful.... as was Fennell.

What a wonderful close-up view of Fennell! More!
I was a student of Dr. Fennell in the 60s. I just found this video (and others like it) and wow, what a blast from the past!
F.F. was a wonderful guy! being a student at Interlochen I had a chance to interact with him on many occasions. He was our conductor for orchestra tour in the spring of 1975. Two weeks with Fred running around the state of Michigan! what a trip! He even played drums at polka night on Tuesdays at the National Music Camp. He even came down to the local bar and played shuffleboard with us. In the 1930s when John Philip Sousa came to Interlochen F.F. played the bass drum. His wife scattered his ashes around the trees in the woods there. This is what will happen to my mortal remains when the time comes. Our Resident conductor the immortal and amazing Byron Hanson played in the Eastman wind ensemble under F.F. and is mentioned by name in the liner notes of the "Screamers" album. Wonderful memories to be sure.
Who arranged these pieces? Maz
Robert King, I believe, who was the editor on the old recording www.discogs.com/Gabrieli-Philadelphia-Brass-Ensemble-The-Cleveland-Brass-Ensemble-The-Chicago-Brass-Ensemble-The-Ant/release/6741058 and has several published arrangements of Gabrieli
Usually for relatively short pieces such as these, audiences will applaud for a little bit to be polite then it`s on to the next piece. However, in this concert I surmise that everyone there attended to pay homage to not only Mr. Herseth but the entire Chicago brass (plus friends) so consequently clapped much longer after each canzona or sonata in appreciation for their superior musicianship through the years.
Reger ein feste Bur
I still have my LP of Gabrielli's music played by the combined ensembles of Chicago, Philadelphia and Cleveland. A treat for the ears!
I remember when I spotted that LP in the record store. I bought it immediately.
A GREAT ALBUM!!!
... and I got my copy signed by Henry Charles Smith when he played with our college wind ensemble (wow!) ps: University of Delaware
Columbia Records presents: "Up To Your Ass in Brass" That was really a large board on display when they arrived at the hall. 😀
One of my prizes ❤️❤️
Chills all over. These guys are awesome
Gabrielli. Spoken with a schwa.
The sound we live - and play - for! Thank you!
I met Dr. Fennell on several occasions and dated his lovely daughter, Cathy. I missed so many opportunities, but I was young and unschooled.
My all time favourite conductor of wind and concert bands.
Jay Friedman was principal trombonist for CSO for many years. Kind of his pals in a wonderful concert.
He still is principal. 52 years strong.
And still is!!!
He still is
Finally called it quits :P
2ndTRUMPET TOO LOUD
Magnifique !
@ Nestor Pelayo, it's Stravinsky's Firebird.
Heaven had better be that good!
+JR15491 Yeah; but difficult to transcribe for harps ... however many.
It’s hard to imagine it being any better.
SOOOOOOOO GUUUUUUUUUUD MY EARS CANNOT COMPREHEND
I would have to say that we (the buying public) would like "A Life of Joyful Discovery" part two! I saw previously unused footage in "Slammissimo". Bravo to you! I have collected all, but two, of his writings. Someday I will put them together in some sort of anthology...He was the reason I became a musician.
His ending statement about making music with who is in front of you was inspirational.
This sounds amazing. I especially like 2:20-3:20. So beautiful.
Is that Joe Alessi playing second to Mulcahy?
Yeah, why is he there ? =)
Jason Gan He was there along with Phil Smith and others to honor Mr Herseth
Jay Friedman was conducting, gotta find someone.
Because he plays his butt off!

Oh my. In tears. He meant...MEANS...so much to me.
So great! And so wonderful to hear Bill's voice, the voice that probably influenced my career more than any other person.
I'd love to hear more. Where can I find the DVD?
I was there.
