Let's Get PLASTERED! DIY Hemp Lime Plaster
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 лис 2022
- It's time for something very exciting - to us at least - it's time to try our hand at hemp lime plastering a whole room. We starting with the smallest (and least important) room in our old stone Portuguese farmhouse: the laundry room.
We've got all the materials and tools we need (we think) and so it's time to give some proper plastering a go. We're giving ourselves three days to complete the first coat. Let's see how we get on...

I noticed that when the rain was hammering down your floor seemed nice and dry, all due to the splendid drain system you installed as well as the waterproof floor. Your careful planning and hard work paid off!
Not only that, but the inside of the house is warmer due to putting insulation in the floor. Now we just need to finish doing that to the rest of the house, and plugging all the gaps/drafts around windows and doors 😃
Small little word can mean so much: just…all…😂
@@kayf8738 yep, those ‘just’ tasks are going to take us quite some years 😂
I am impatiently waiting to see the ditch get filled in ! Priorities and weather !

Every time I watch the hard work you do, I think of the people preceding you who built the house and garden. I’m certain they would approve and be honored that you are putting so much love into the homestead. This was exciting to see the hemp/lime coat go on-so beautiful and I’m with you on desiring a rustic end result.
...What you are doing is perfect, also the fact that you are united..as a tandem, congratulations.👍
When I saw the size of the building and hearing you say you're going to start with the downstairs first, I was happy to know I would be watching your channel for at least another 3 years!😄 Your humorous banter, intelligence and hard work male your videos so enjoyable to watch. But the scope of work? Eye yi yi !
Wonderful work. Well done! The house is getting a new lease of life and looking beautiful. Keep going!
Adding the base coat makes the light brightness change considerably, especially after the "window" sides were done. I can notice just on my screen.
The change in the room is remarkable.
Lovely to see how old buildings come back to life again. 👍
*Yep putting it with your hands certainly seemed so much easier all round. Kylie & Guy, you truly are both such working folks to do all that...and to think you have many more walls to do. Well done... I am totally in awe of you both of what you are achieving.*
Love the time-lapse (and the music). Fantastic determination. Artistically beautiful outcome - the texture of the wall is a testament to your determination to maintain the character - and yes, I know it's a 'scratch'. What is probably the best part of all is that your time-analysis on this 'sub project' turned out to be very, VERY positive. And of, course there are always unintended consequences, like your 'incidental sauna'!!! Admirable in the extreme... The walls look amazing!
This home is a fortress, here in Louisiana, there are no rocks, so no rock houses, tornadoes , or hurricanes will not likely blow this house away. This is hard work, I know the shoulders will be sore, but having videos of it shows how passionate you are about this place. Wish you all the best.
Great to see yor drainage systems working and what a terrific finnish the hemp makes,i used to hang hemp rope for hanging off chimneys, steeples ect on bosons chairs and if you leave hemp rope wet it quickly forms damp smells and rots so best to dry quick and not use to much water, looking great .
I love a relaxing Sat morning watching Make.Do.Grow, eating toast and drinking tea. Perfect start to the weekend
To get straight walls there are rendering metal rods. Attache with same material day before. Make it directly level over the entire wall. Pre moist the wall. Afterward moist can be soaked up and even hardens the lime.
This was just a fantastic episode on so many levels----the end result both cost and eye appeal seems to have been worth it. I know it's "just" a scratch coat, but when the window well was coated and the other walls suddenly lit up; I was one happy voyeur! Kudos to both of you on a job well done and I can't wait to see all of the rooms once they've received all of their coats. Words can't express. . . .
The walls look great. Well done. Regards.
I like a lot you guys , fantastic job , i hope when the building is finish ,you guys enjoy the country .
That lightened the room up. The light reflects off really well. 🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏿🤘🏼💋❤️
I have massive respect for the two of you being willing to take on this type of work. Your place will be stunning in the end.
Its amazing how much brighter and more attractive the room is with even just the scratch coat of the lyme-hemp plaster on its walls. Nice! Taking it a room at a time is good, at least for me as I can see the transformation and it encourages me on to complete the big project. Love the effect of the light streaming through the window.
It went on well but I think you need a lie down after that marathon.👋👋😄🧡🧡
Bravo!!!!!!!!!! The giraffe looking walls are okay, but the lime and hemp walls are amazing to look at. So much brighter in the room
Tip, put thin cotton gloves under your rubber gloves. Still sweaty, but different feel. Love to watch your videos. Best wishes, Willem.
Love the natural creamy wheat colour. 💛☺️
Keep up the good work. Ye are doing brilliantly.
Er you missed a bit ....only kidding. Don't you just love fast forwarding. You both worked so hard (as you always do) and the wall looks brilliant. I love Saturday mornings when your videos pop up. Thank you both for sharing. Grand job xxx
🤣🤭🤣... "you missed a bit".
It's exciting when a project takes less time when anticipated. It looks fantastic.
After trying painting for the first time recently, I now have a huge respect for painters and how much effort it is. I do like tuna mayo toasted sandwiches :)
Wow, I just know this is going to be beautiful! Just love the finish ( and it’s not finished yet!) worth the sweat Kylie 😊
It looks so good and that is just the scratch coat! Wow! What a fitness AND beautification regimen. 😀
Wow it looks so nice and bright and fresh. You both blow my mind at how hard you work. You both have this amazing working relationship too. This will be a beautiful home one day.
I adore the look of the completed first coat!!!!! Soooo good. Bravo on your exhausting work...so worth it. It honors the history of your home, this rustic finish...such a great choice.
The room looks great. Look forward to seeing it completed. I enjoy all of your projects.
I love a good time lapse lol I am glad you have so many walls left for us to watch 😂 it’s weirdly relaxing 🤷🏻♀️
I like it looks rich and warm. Much more light reflection from the lighter wall
I applaud 👏🏾👏🏾you both, absolutely incredible your hard work is paying off tenfold. It’s a beautiful house and farmland, very admirable what you’ve achieved so far on your homestead 🤗💕🇬🇧
You two are so lovely and thrilled to watch as you move forward with your beautiful farm.
Great job guys, people who don't renovate underestimate what time effort and sheer physical motivation goes into these things. We know and we bow to you.... well done... time to break into that fruit booze! haha
doing a great job! A damp sponge over is great for getting smooth but rounded and organic.. I just LOVE it
Respect! Looks great, warm, Mediterranean, natural... Next to the benefits, I'm a fan
Wonderful process. I’m full of admiration for your willingness to learn & grow! I lived in New Mexico for 30 years and loved the beauty of adobe construction and the soft curves created by using such materials. Thank you for sharing.
Your doing such a fabulous job of developing your property. Both of you are workaholics. Love watching your Videos. 💜🇦🇺🦘🪃🐨💙
Great! This is the best stage when building/renovating, lots happening visually with relatively little work. Feels really good.
Well done.
Your results look outstanding! What a transformation. Very, very nice job on the room and as well as the episode itself - great editing.
Wow, what a transformation, it looks so different! You’re literally re-building your house with your bare hands.
Looks beautiful, and keep up your fantastic work! Greetings from Stockholm.
Amazing how much brighter it looks. You two are awesome.
Props to you for a job well done! RESPECT! I must say, I am green with envy at your ability to do hard physical labour at length. My back would have given out in the middle of the first wall.
Wow! Looks great!
Wow awesome
Thank you for sharing 😁
Good to see the progress - sometimes when a mix is being made the ratios are shown - was it a 1:3:3:1 (water lime hemp sand) - it may help a few viewers to get a better idea for doing this themselves. When I've done work that involves the stretching and pushing that this looks like it does, doing other tasks throughout the day seems to reduce the pain, as does stretching a lot more, drinking as much water as is possible and thinking of it more like a light-workout and pacing yourself. BTW, if you want to get the lime off any of the woodwork you're going to finish, white vinegar is normally recommended - is it worth testing it out to show if it does work better than just water?
Your walls look wonderful! Our hats off to you as it is so very physical, especially your forearms, shoulders & hands. We admire your labor of love. Time for a beverage to toast this accomplishment - cheers!!
Great diy video, materials, mix, method, cost, lessons learned. Sore but admire a job well done. Warrmer and brighter. Modern yet rustic.
What an undertaking but it's going to look amazing.
I’m so impressed you got the room done in two days. No wonder you were both knackered! I felt tired just watching like a backseat driver. Hope you have a day (or more) of R&R - don’t want you to wear yourselves out.
Wow, those walls pretty smart so far. Congrats on adjusting your mixes to get the consistencies you needed.
Kylie, i wish my hair could be as neat as yours when facing a lot of work... my hair is sproingy and heat-holding 🥵.
Guy, you look 10 years younger with shorter hair and much less facial hair👍🏼.
Woooooow beautiful job you have done guys godbless your work
Interesting videos of yours that I’ve just found here. You were spot on in the last video of yours I just watched…..these recipes are closely guarded secrets and all but impossible to find. I think much of that has to do with the fact that working with lime mortars is an art that was almost lost (in the US) when cement came along and began being used.
If you have any hemp left over, it’s the best material for chicken bedding. Love your videos and works! Thank you for sharing! ❤
It’s what we use for our chicken bedding already 😀
Amazing work.Hopefully that means you can be inside your home this winter.🎉
😂 the house has no electricity or heating …, going to take at least another year to sort all that
Muy bueno. 💪💪💪🇪🇸
Wonderful sense of humour & energy throughout all the continuous hard work. Awesome mindset & knowledge sharing🌟
WOW - you guys are impressive - from research to application to education - trailblazers! Love this channel - well done. 👏👏👏
I absolutely love the lime/hemp plaster mix you have chosen. The colour is also really nice and I'm sure the insulation properties will be very beneficial, great choice!
The end result looks simply amazing! Such a rewarding project! Congrats on getting the mix right as well!
Kylie and Guy, you did a super job on this room! Respect to you for all your hard work❤️❤️👏👏👏👏
An old video by 'les Jeromes' (worth checking out! Autogenerated english subtitles available) adviced to rub your hands with water + vinegar before putting gloves on and handling alkaline plaster. Good luck!
Hi in Montenegro which has similar conditions to you guys. Lime putty is used a lot people over the years have used all sorts of things added to the mix. Having learned the ways to plaster in the uk I found the local way odd but it works very well. They make the mixture a little wetter and throw it on to the wall after which troweling or smoothing.
Love watching the walls being done, looks beautiful
I do enjoy your cost breakdowns as well as your channel. Keep up the good work.
I also enjoy all your gardening and the things that you two make from your garden.
It's beautiful, very organic. Thank you for taking your time and sharing with us. 🇺🇸
looking great that hemp wal, verry natural, can't wait to see when its all be finished
Congratulations!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏Looks beautiful! As you mentioned - all your hard work is worth it! I bet this material gives your space a very nice feel... can't wait to watch further home projects!💗❣️💕
It's a pure pleasure to watch your excellent hard work
That looks great- like a real room instead of a restoration site.
Indeed, feels great to have at least one room that looks like a real room 😃
First time watching your channel, the mix looks like porridge looks great when it's on the wall, and has a really nice warm colour too. Amazing job 👍
That room may be your utility room but it sure is starting to look inviting. You guys make a great team. It looked like a lot of work but the kind that has instant results. Thanks for sharing.
The key appears to be keeping a supply of lime and hemp. Fabulous
Job well done. May I suggest an other youtube ("tiny shiny home" , episode OUR family shares what we learned our first year,dec.31 2021) which did and still are doing clay trails and errors but a very interesting family on their honestead in Arizona. They also explain the process installing the solar system etc... Thank's for sharing the hard work, techniques & the brewing tips!
Nice job Kylie and Guy, hard work but satisfying
Amazing transformation, your house is starting to take shape 💪 xx
It looks wonderful, and the light well wall is beautiful. You are both looking super fit, even if it is knackering!
The room looks bigger now. Keep up the good and hard work 💪🏼
What a difference, honestly, it looks very nice! Watching Guy do it with the trowel was exhausting, I could just feel how hard he was having to push against the wall, sure am glad he switched, and the hand method looked pretty good. Well done you two!!!
I have a great respect for the work you are doing. I really enjoy the details that you provide. I have learned so much about everything you are trying to accomplish. It's the best comprehensive course I have ever watched. I am truly in awe in both of you. Big Bear Hugs from Arizona.
you two are bloody impressive.
Enjoyable episode to watch, love it when a project starts coming together. Looking great with just the scratch coat so can't wait to see final finish. It's going to be awesome.
The scratch coat looks really nice. I know this will sound crazy and there is really nothing on the internet on this but I have heard of an ancient technique in south India of using egg whites in the lime plaster for the final coat. If you are experimenting, you can try this.
Awesome
So satisfying video to watch - the plastering time lapse was very enjoyable. Thank you
Looks great for a scratch coat ! If was just a storage room, I would not bother with a finish coat. Reminds me of cob.
Oh boy this was exactly the information I’ve been looking for. Can’t afford to hempcrete all my walks to recommended 25cm for insulation but want to at least try as a plaster and hole filler, and couldn’t find any information on using quick lime / cal viva as that’s all I can find so far in Portugal other than nhl that I don’t want to use. Thank you both so much for taking such great care in detailing your work so that others can suffer a bit less hopefully 😂
So, a few things we’ve learnt since this video …. much easier to either: a. slake the quicklime first, cool overnight and then mix with hemp the next day, b. use hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2, not calcium dihydroxide CaH2O2 which is what the UK has).
We have a couple of other videos that show both these if you fancy trawling through them (or let me know and I can find the appropriate ones)
😀 - Kylie
Great work guys, it's looking fab!
Looks great even with just the scratch coat! Love the channeL!
reeealy hard work, respect.
Love the rough walls! 2nd layer will make it somewhat more smooth, but I will still LOVE it. It is hard work, hope you get a good rest this weekend.
They need a nice hot tub to soak out those muscle aches.
That looks AMAZING! Well done you both.
I've seen cooking sleeves to keep arms from getting dirty. Perhaps you can get some for plastering when you're warm.
I watch a channel called alto mavi (I think 🤔) which is an Italian/French couple who are using/have used hemp throughout their Stonehouse in italy. They did have to do a lot more stonework and new roof before they got to this stage 😂 I think they must have used a slightly different Lime product as their mix had to sit for a couple of days but could be sat covered for months as well. It's very interesting to watch and I love the fact it is all eco friendly. I also suspect the availability of products is a lot better for them too. I think that may be why your timelapse came up in my suggestions.
Have to say that while the timelapse brought me to your channel I am actually enjoying the journey far more through your back catalogue. Love your humour btw 😂
ETA I know you are much further along now and way past this information but they did have some interesting ways of pointing and insulating that may interest you further down the line also their mix etc may jnterest you
We also watch that channel 😀
The mix they use definitely is different, or has some other ingredients in it … a friend of ours, who’s also doing hemp/lime plastering, tried to replicate their mix but weren’t successful
You might try smoothing the plaster off with a sheet of polyethylene and maybe a paint roller whilst it is still soft ?
