Replacing ROTTEN Lintels (in a Stone Building) - Restoring a Portuguese Farmhouse

  • We discovered some significant rot and water damage in two wooden lintels during the renovation of the bathroom in our abandoned Portugal property. After procrastinating for some time (because we had no idea how to approach a lintel replacement project) we did a bunch of research and reading so we could make a plan.
In this video, it's time to put all that head knowledge into action. Follow along with our progress as we tackle this slightly nerve-wracking project...

They're building a castle at Guedelon with exactly that mix for all the tons (thousands) of stones. It's fascinating to see how those wall 3 meters wide are done all by hand. Stonecutters do some amazing work with curves, figures, precision.
Some of those workers are now working on rebuilding Notre Dame in Paris.
You're not quite building a castle, but after watching this, my shoulders were aching from seeing the stones removed, replaced and filled around the gaps.
It looks extremely good! I have watched another video with restoring a stone house, with a stone roof. All done by hand as well. Martijn Doolard.
These are arts slowly dying out, but some people are doing masses of research and going back in time to do things the right way, traditional ways.
Pleased to see you both taking such care in doing things properly.

You two are amazing! That was BRILLIANT! Anxiety inducing to watch, let along DO! Thank you for never sugar coating the difficulty, steep learning curves and extraordinary amount of effort this really takes! Watching you two gives an honest look at what it really takes to restore something like this, by hand. I am SO inspired by you!

*Kia ora (hello) Kylie & Guy, I just love seeing the 'throw back' videos again... plus it also shows all the newbies coming along to find out how it all happened. EPIC! Lime-related construction and lime/stone renovation content seems to be difficult to find anywhere - thank you for making this so compelling, and with such excellence.
Those lintels are gorgeous (wonderfully done, Kylie)!! Scary how rotten the old lintels were. One could really feel your anxiety when you started removing the first of the large stones!
Great storytelling, wonderfully edited - as usual!! Thanks very much!

Seeing the size of those stones, one has to appreciate the builders of the house who put it together with minimal machinery. I also appreciate your efforts to do the repair/rebuilding using authentic materials so that it will last another hundred years. In other videos I've seen how quickly good stonework will disintegrate when modern cement has been used in the wrong places.

Great to see this again, the lintels look lovely, nothing like some oak in a house.
I remember Kylie's desire to make furniture with self grown and sawn wood, an ambition I share.
Frankly, self grown lumber requires too much investment to be practicable for most. There is an alternative - wood turning. This offers the same on a much more manageable smaller scale. Up here in the forest I collect slices of cut trees, prepare them for drying and eventually turn them. I have made plenty of furniture but am having a great time learning this new skill. When time allows maybe this might be interesting for you, too.

How do Kiwis land up in Portugal? I have only just started watching your channel as I have been on the lookout for videos in my family's district. My father was born in the village of Bravo and our grandparents are buried in the little cemetry outside Pedrogao Pequeno. It always strikes me how Portugal is full of abandoned homes. My grandparents house (ruin) still stands, it was closed up in 1985 after my grandfather passed away. The house is like a time capsule as no-one ever went inside again.
My father owns the land, but only lived there during his childhood. He was sent to work for his uncle at the age of 15 to Mozambique, his family had no way to feed and educate him. Many others left their mountain villages to escape hardship. My father is 80+ and lives in South Africa, which is another life away. I emigrated to the Netherlands (same time you moved to Portugal) and am working on my strategy to finish the journey my father started long ago. Your resource is absolutely valuable when considering life in the Portuguese countryside. Well done on all your great work and your Portuguese is also coming along. Muito obrigado, Victor

Well done on completing such an outrageous task for amateurs! I'm not surprised you were terrified. Did you treat the rotten wood that remained in some way so the rot doesn't spread to your lovely new lintels? Very disappointing for you about the wrong-sort-of-lime, but surely it would be more ecological to stick with what you've already done where you've used it rather than chipping it off and throwing it away, and then use the right stuff for the rest of it? I remember my dad using slaked lime on his allotment when I was a child. I was never allowed near it because it was so hot and used to spit etc. Very brave of you!
