Hi guys, I got carried away colouring the page! I have really enjoyed seeing how it this illustration has come to life! You will find all the pencil shades I have used, for each element on the page, listed in the description box above. Let me know what you think of the colours we chose together.....some of my choices changed with regards to the Peacocks as I saw the page come together. Thanks for watching 🤗💗
What a wonderful service you've done for my coloring! It helps to have you articulate everything and provide multiple examples of how you work to get your effects. You are a natural teacher. I appreciate all the effort you've gone through to present everything so clearly. Thanks.
Thank you so much for your kindness, it is so appreciated 💗 I am so happy you liked my video and it has given you some ideas to work with. It means so much to me that you enjoy my channel! Thank you 🤗💗
This series is immensely helpful. I understand how your pages stand out with all the shading, extra colors, and expertise. Magnificent, especially your peacocks. I know I will refer to this series again and again. Your instructions make perfect sense and you reiterate the important parts. I don’t consider it rambling at all. Can’t wait for part four! Thank for your time and knowledge. It makes a difference!
Thank you for the positive comment, it helps to know I was able to somewhat explain things ok. I am so happy that the series has been useful and thanks for taking the time to watch the videos! They haven't been short ones!! 🤗💗
When using a more limited palette an important thing to remember is that three colors and three layers are a totally different thing. The reason it looks so much more complete with all those slight variations of color isn't really the color, it's that each time you change pencil you are adding another layer. If you use three shades with decent contrast twice each, so six layers, it's going to be quite similar to six shades with that same contrast (the same dark and light shades on either side). Once you added a second layer of some colors, a very dark, and the ivory you were up to eight to ten layers. The brand of pencil and paper is going to make a HUGE difference here... many simply won't allow ten layers of color regardless of how light handed you are.
I have loved watching your process and you weren’t rambling you were teaching what you do to make your page three D. I am not a new colourist by any means but I do share your love for albrecht druhers and I have found this series of videos so useful in my own colouring and I thank you for the time you have spent with me talking about cast shadows etc. I cannot wait for part four. Much love & *virtual hugs* xxx❤
Thank you so much Claire, so glad you have enjoyed this series despite being an experienced colourist. And I am happy that I managed to somewhat explain some stuff 😂 thanks for the positivity! Yes, the Albrecht durers are such gorgeous pencils and I am so glad I am able to share my love for them with everyone. Thanks for taking the time to watch 🤗💗
I really struggle with "mindless" or "casual" coloring as well. I'm just not happy until it's all blended, highlighted, and shadowed. Unfortunately I have neither the time nor the hand strength to do it on every page, especially if I'm trying to color during the work week. My go-to alternatives are either using the watercolor pencils wet, or using my Prismas. Prismas are unique as you can literally spread them across paper with the blender, almost like they are a creme. You can try it with just a few colors.. or even just one such as indigo or sepia.. go for mid to darks since you can only go as dark as you start with and the more contrast you can create the more depth you end up with. You also need the Prisma blender pencil. You apply the pigment in the darkest areas with a soft edge and leave the light areas white paper. Go over with the blender from dark to light and it just melts out into mid and light tones automatically. It's a super fast way of coloring, check out Julie's passion for coloring for examples, it's her go-to approach. You totally can use more than one color on an object, but you don't have to for a good result. With the watercolor pencils I lay down a base layer of color establishing the basic light to dark, wet, then use the tip of the pencil off the waterbrush to glaze another layer deepening the darks. Also works best with mid to dark pencils. This is much easier on the hands, and just as fast, but results vary based on your paper, not all papers can handle that much water well.
Glad I am not the only one that struggles with flat colouring. Thanks for the tips on using Prismacolors...that are not very easily to get hold of the pencils in the UK, so I am unlikely to get them until they become more easy to get hold of 🤗💗
My pleasure! Thanks for the request, I will make a note of it and hopefully see what I can put together in the future. I do find backgrounds challenging to be honest, so it may take a while for me to figure out how to share a video on backgrounds. I am so sorry to hear about your fall, I really do hope you have a speedy recovery! I am sure it must be so hard to get lots of things done without your thumb in good shape. Hope it is starting to feel better and that you will be able to colour again soon, and of course do other activities which have probably stopped for now. I am so glad to know the series has been helpful, means a lot! 🤗💗
