Awesome interview! As a high schooler, I was in deep with The Replacements's lore. I was jealous of Tommy Stinson for leaving school to tour (we're about the same age). I read alot of Creem magazine, and they loved the 'Mats. Years later out of high school, I met Tommy at a Pornos for Pyros gig. He asked me if I had heard the opening band, The Flaming Lips. I hadn't until that night, but thought I they were from Mars and sounded beautiful. He said that someone from the band was at the 'Shit Hits the Fans' gig in OK. I told him I had tried to order the SHTF tape and the record store guy called me a week later to tell me they were out of stock, but he made me a cassette copy and I could come get it for free. Tommy thought that was cool. I thanked him for being who he was and we parted. Also, I was on two hits of acid during the conversation. 😅 Good times!
“Too dumb to realize how cool it was”. Pretty much summarizes the 1980s in Chicago for me. I saw all of these iconic ( Mats, REM, Husker Du etc) indie bands, for $5-10 a show. Fun. Wish I carried a camera, a diary and sobriety!
Love the interview. BUT. Uncle Tupelo's first record is one of my favorite records ever. It's up there with the Replacements. Those are my 2 favorite bands.
I never liked seeing the Replacements in concert for the very reason he stated. If anyone represents the Minneapolis Sound - it is the Replacements. Each album is a gem, and Westerberg was a great song writer.
I did that at Blake high school - their dance - I played the Doors "Light My Fire" keyboard solo for as LONG as possible to drive people away. Glad to hear the Replacements were doing the same.
Rock and Roll Ghost, Talent Show, Achin To Be, I'll Be You, Darlin One, They're Blind, I Won't, Don't Tell A Soul contains some of Pauls best writing. The productio does sound a little dated but it is brilliant on every other level.imho.
He’s mistaken about School Kids Records, it wasn’t in Columbus Ohio, it was in Ann Arbor Michigan where the University of Michigan is and the club he was most likely talking about there is The Blind Big.
I wonder if they had been able to ask Bil what he thinks about the original mix version of DTAS that came out with the box set, if he'd change his mind. Then again, Stink is his desert island 'Mats album, so maybe not!
He says he's not a "dirty laundry" kind of guy and then he goes on to say he never saw Bob washing his clothes and would always sleep in his clothes. Kind of funny that he turned out to literally be a "dirty laundry" kind of guy.
@@voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885 not what he means, more like the time paul slept with an underage girl or overdosed on heroin in a dope house, if that happened
@@johntomic3141 True, but that destructive attitude is why they had such a fanatic fanbase and still have the mystique today. They were peers of REM......REM did all the right things, got huge and famous, and now nobody talks about them anymore. But people still talk about the Replacements.
Come on Gorman….. “the greatest rock n roll band”. They could barely play at a lot of shows. Nobody was great at their craft other than Westerberg as a writer. Others did the same schtick before them - Pistols- Ramones - the self sabotage thing. I have all of the Mats records and appreciate them but you sound like a total fanboy
Great rock and roll is chaos to me. Perhaps The Clash were a better band, but these guys epitomized what I feel rock should be. It's about hitting the wrong note at the right time, not the other way around.

I really like this guy. He’s so positive and sincere.
This gentleman is incredibly sincere and thoughtful in his interview. So great to watch and listen to this. Mats for life!
Left of the Dial… beautiful song and nostalgic for me .. college rock

the book is incredible. i actually read the book before i even heard a song from the band. then they became one of my favorite bands
so grateful for these full interviews, they're such a revelation
Interesting and enguaging man.Great insight and interview..
Great film. Bechard is a under appreciated genius.
Insightful. Never a Replacements fan (sorry) until now, 2021.
I like this interview. Heard some very cool stories.

I love the interviews with the "putting the wrench on the bolt" guys.
That table is a nice table

Can we get a shitz/LoudFastRules/Soul Asylum doc? Pleeez

Yeah the REPLACEMENTS ....A GREAT BAND. PUNK AND ROCK MIXED WITH ATTITUDE.....SONGS. THAT ROCKED 🤪
I wonder if they had been able to ask Bil what he thinks about the original mix version of DTAS that came out with the box set, if he'd change his mind. Then again, Stink is his desert island 'Mats album, so maybe not!
I wondered the same thing. DTAS never made sense to me until hearing the Matt Wallace mixes on Dead Man's pop.
Yes. The remix is great. It went from my least played to my most played Replacements album.
Sounds like he is inducting them into the Alcoholics Hall of Fame

I bet!
This guy is like the last guy you'd think was their road manager! Cooler heads right ? What a mess lol
aka Bill Mack in Trouble Boys.
He's no Billy Sullivan.
PLACE LARGELY RUMINATES
I'd take Stink , too.
Just imagine if they smoke dope and didn't drink as much...
Would have been huge.
They wouldn't have been the same band. Westerberg has talked quite a bit about how alcoholism was essential to their attitude and creativity.

One of the worst bands I ever saw was The Replacements. Later on one of the best bands I ever saw was The Replacements.
I assume he was let go is that he is annoying?
Long live The Professor and Brass City Records.

The Impediments is a better band name.
