    This was my favorite bonus feature on the DVD tbh. Matt's a great producer when he's allowed to mix what he engineered

    Thanks for the whole interview. I see Paul around Minneapolis at times in a grocery store or at an antique corner just living a mid America life with his Twins cap on. If I make eye contact always nod a fans approval but never want to bother him. So fortunate my wife and I where able to see 4 shows on the last tour. 🙏🇺🇲😎🎸👍

    48:40 talking about going down together. I’ve watched this four times now Gorman and i get goosebumps every time he describes the shooting yourself in the foot aesthetic. I know it didn’t help them but it just sums everything up so well. It seems somehow noble. Goosebumps.

    I think it is interesting that Matt states that he and Paul wanted to make a "classic sounding" album----when Paul has been very outspoken about how he hated the production on "Don't Tell A Soul" referring to the layers of guitars as "slop". It does NOT sound like the Replacements---and from what I can tell was their last ditch effort to hit "the homer".

    • @billydenkmusic
      @billydenkmusic 10 місяців тому

      Chris Lord-Alge's mix added glossier production values. Matt's remix on Dead Man's Pop is sounds more direct (see the Tim [Let It Bleed] remix).

  • @timmytVA

    Thoroughly enjoyed this, thanks. Regarding Matt's point about playing the game, with the industry, press, even fans - my friend and I were leaving the 930 Club in DC after a great Westerberg solo show. Paul was sitting on the steps of his tour bus, talking and signing things. My friend said "want to say hi to Paul?" I passed as I knew Paul's reputation and didn't want to sully a fantastic show. For me, it's good enough to have the records and see the shows.

    I loved this band and still do. Can't imagine their career trajectory or personalities ever being anything other than what it was. But to still be doing some of that shit (like Tommy showing what he thinks of the guy by spitting on the sidewalk) as late as 1989...That's some junior high schoolboy goofy bullshit...

    There's no pedal steel on Achin to Be, it's just Slim on guitar doing some pedal-steel-ish licks

    • @GormanBechard
      @GormanBechard  3 роки тому +3

      If Matt says there's pedal steel, I think I'm going to trust the sober producer.

    • @johnkough
      @johnkough 3 роки тому +4

      @@GormanBechard Well Matt didn't really say it, the interviewer asked a question based on the premise that the song had pedal steel, and Matt didn't reject the premise. Then later in the interview, the pedal steel becomes a lap steel, and Matt lets that slide, even though those are different instruments. So maybe he was just letting things slide here. Matt also states that there are parts of the sessions where his memory is foggy.
      The point is, the Mats didn't make a big decision to be "country" to the point of bringing in special instruments on the song. Still, no question Slim's sweet playing on the song was an ear-opener at the time. I'm a guitarist, and I started playing licks like that all over the place after hearing Slim do it.

    Kind of ironic now that we have the DEAD MANS POP mixes and it turns out that the slick "80's sound" was inherent from the beginning and it wasn't the Alge remix that inflicted it.
