Excellent work, if this is a Randall knife like I believe it to be, these are some of the finest knives you can get your hands on, quality made USA made, Orlando Florida, generally made out of 01 tool steel, they have excellent hardness, and excellent edge retention, the only reason I don't own one is they're out of my tax bracket, I've dreamed of owning one of these for years, I've collected knives for 55 years, sharpen knives for that long too, you will not be able to find a better or finer knife made, even some of the handmade knives don't measure up. Great work on the restoration.....
That's a Randall #8. I stopped into the shop in Orlando right around the first week of 1977 and paid $67 for a #8. I have cleaned deer, birds and fish with it over the years. The blade is discolored with a nice patina, no rust or pitting and takes a wicked sharp edge. Beautiful steel. It is the knife that the U-2 pilot Gary Powers had with him when he was shot down over the USSR in the early sixties.
That is really cool to know about the pilot Gary Powers and thanks for commenting and watching. Since I refinished this knife I have purchased 5 of them. A #1-7. 8-4. buxton fighter. 16w. #2-8. And I'm looking for a 27. I wish they was $67 bucks but those prices are never coming back.
@@rustyrestorationww1ww2 I don’t know if you’re aware of this not but I have a trick to cleaning rust off of knives especially around makers marks that my grandpa taught me because he is she used to do knife restorations it’s a simple trick does it leave any scratches off and it minimizes the amount of sanding you have to do depending on the health damage and I finish it all you have to do is get A pencil preferably a carpenters pencil and just start rubbing it with the graphite lid and it just takes the rest right off now depending on how big the knife is your costume a good portion So if you decide to start using this trick on the regular one restore knives I suggest you stock up on carpenter pencils but it will make things a whole hell of a lot easier for you I hope you can make good use this little tidbit of information
You should use a sanding block, sand in one direction and not round the edges on the different grind planes on the blade. It is a beautiful knife and it deserves to be treated with care.
Looks like a Model 8-4 (Bird & Trout) to me - I found a beat up example of the same knife (without your lanyard hole) recently and it scrubbed up a treat. I haven't put an edge on it yet but will soon - I've read that unless otherwise requested, this Model comes from Randall with the upper forward edge sharpened as well (like a dagger), but I shall leave that blunt.
I think that I remember Randall used a lot of O-1 tool steel for their carbon blades. Now I know that I may be wrong but my Model 26 Pathfinder had O-1.
I am not a bladesmith and I'm still trying to perfect sharpening. Lol but I can put a restoration job on guns and knives but mainly guns are my expertise.
Can't believe that as a 'restorer" you didn't recognize this piece as a Randall immediately. That's kind of scary when you think about it. You didn't bother to research it a little before starting? Gee, this is a nice old knife. Very well made. Very good steel, blah blah blah. Well NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!! It's a fkn RANDALL. Even a noob knife guy would know a Randall in the first few seconds he held it. And shame on the owner for turning this piece over to someone who wouldn't know a Randall if he held it in his hands.
It should be written into law that ANYONE! who allows a beautiful Randall knife to deteriorate to that initial condition can be slapped legally and lawful by whomever chooses to do so.😐
@patbiggin4477 I actually found a nice randal model 16-7 and a model 1-7 for 1300 total and I bought them both. I'll pay extra to keep my 6years and enjoy my new to me Randall's now.
@ it’s a Number 4 with a 6 inch blade. It’s an early 1950’s knife. It has the leather handle. I also have the original sheath. It has a stone, but it’s not original to the knife. I need to get $1000.00 for it. If you want to see pics just let me know and we can figure out how I can send them to you.
@@rustyrestorationww1ww2 I do not see that email you posted earlier, I can send pics, just let me know where to. I should have took a screenshot, sorry about that.
It is a Model 8 - TROUT AND BIRD knife and currently retails at $480.00 if you're willing to wait a year for it. I know the owner was a sick puppy when he discovered he had lost it.
Why, is that so, called mud still wet? So, it was buried and just dug up within seconds? I've never seen any knife look like that, just laying outside for a year or so? It sure looks like artificial weathering to me!
Artificial weathering would be a ignorant thing to do especially to a very valuable randall knife. If I wanted to fake a video I'd definitely choose something more interesting and affordable. Thanks for watching.
@@rustyrestorationww1ww2 Yes , but you admittedly did not KNOW it was a Randall until much later. My guess is that you probably would have asked "Duh, what's a Randall?"
@TheEzzieboy i never seen a randall before I never even thought that there would be a super high end boutique type knife maker that would actually be very usable and so valuable. I know some swords are very high end and expensive but seems like all randall knives are extremely well made and valuable
I had an uncle who lived in Winter Park, Fl. He had a pretty extensive collection of Randall knives..
I love seeing those knives out and getting used instead of sitting in a collection. Nice job!! 👍
I agree. It's a shame to see something as beautiful as this sitting in a box.

Beautiful knife great work.
Thanks!
What an amazing difference you made to this lovely old knife. Can you please leave your printed info on the screen for a bit longer 😊🇬🇧
Excellent work, sir. I have a Randall hunting knife from my late FIL...an heirloom...

That looks almost just like mine which is a trout and bird model mines really old too from like the 40s but yea great knives
Very nice indeed ,you just earned yourself a subscriber ,God bless you and your family. 👍 Lee
Thanks and welcome
Very nice work Brother…

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that next time.
Can you tell us what chemicals you used to make the blade look rusty and in need of “restoration “ before you started?
That is without a doubt the dumbest question you could ask.
Good knives. I have one. They are not cheap.
Hey handsome. Great restoration
I need one of these knives in my life

WOW! You can actually hear the hardness in that blade.
I think that I remember Randall used a lot of O-1 tool steel for their carbon blades. Now I know that I may be wrong but my Model 26 Pathfinder had O-1.
I looked at their website and the waiting list for any knife from Randall is 7 years!?
Just a question. Would it be better if you wet sanded instead of dry sanded? I’m not being a wise guy just on a quest for knowledge
Yes it probably would be but when using 480grit paper it really don't matter until you get into the higher grits like 800
They found one in a lunar module that was at bottom of ocean for 40 some odd years...brought it up cleaned up like new....maybe needed new scales.
That would be so cool to see
@rustyrestorationww1ww2 go to randal museum in Orlando. You'll be amazed. I got 2 myself ..I use mine.
That was an excellent restoration but it should be much sharper
Randall makes their blades from 01 tool steel
To be curious, why didnt the owner want ti send it in ti randall to do their spa treatment on it?
Probably didn't want to wait the forever time frame they have and I'd think they would cost about 3x more than me
@@rustyrestorationww1ww2 ahh could be.
I wouldn't send mine in either but I'm also a bladesmith so I can fix everything I might mess up
I am not a bladesmith and I'm still trying to perfect sharpening. Lol but I can put a restoration job on guns and knives but mainly guns are my expertise.
Ill take that rusty old knife off your hands. After the neglect it has suffered it is probably worthless now. Ill give it a good home
It definitely went through abuse but now after it has had the royal treatment it looks like new. 😉
😂😂😂
all Randals are forged out of 01 steel. I live in Florida and have visited the factory in Orlando.
Are you sure this isn't stainless. Randall offered both carbon and stainless in some models, and still may.
Yes the stainless steel blades have a S stamped just after the name on the blade
Personally I would have gone with a scotchbrite pad, a really soft one. But then I am cautious. 😀
That’s Swedish O1 tool steel.
It holds up well to corrosion.
Sharpening edge : Create a bur on the edgeand then remove the bur
That was alot of grinding😂
I've never seen a knife sharpened like that . Poor knife, that was cruel.
@joekrewson9951 abusively cruel

Careful you'll suck the temper out of that blade quickly on a buffing wheel
Don't think so.

It won't get hot enough to pull the temper out when I'm doing it. I've had many many years of practic.
It is hand forged out of O-1 tool steel. About a $1000 knife.
Wow that explains why it's such a nice knife I am extremely impressed on the quality.
$445 new from Randall if you wanna wait 6 years
