Restoration of an Old Hunting Knife! Snake Skin Handle??
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- In this video I restore an old hunting knife. This knife is very unique because it is large but still folds up like a pocket knife.
I start with disassembly and then use electrolysis to remove most of the rust. After this I bring the part to the blast cabinet for some sandblasting. Once the blade was free of rust I etched the blade in ferric chloride to darken the color. The blade was then tumbled in some media and stones to produce a beautiful stone washed finish.
For the scales I chose to use some cobra snake skin that a subscriber sent me. This was difficult and took a few tries, but eventually I was able to make it work. To stick with the snake theme I forged a cobra shaped guard.
Finally I created a leather sheath to hold the knife.
With every project I strive to add a creative touch. I hope you guys enjoyed the video, if you do leave a like and a comment. Subscribe if you would like to see more awesome content ;).
Much Love,

Great job! It was great seeing one of the Pakistani knives from my childhood turned into a beautiful artistic piece of Pakistani steel.
The snake skin “scales”were a dope idea! They just set and look AMAZING!
Your very talented my friend. With basic tools and a creativity you have done awesome job on this. Thank you so very much in letting me come a long with you.
Thank you very much!
I really enjoy a good thunderstorm. It may sound strange, but there's just something so COZY about rain on the roof and the smell of the fresh air afterwards.
I'm OBSESSED with thunderstorms. I have been ever since I was like 4 or 5.
Great job as always. FYI my grandfather showed me how to see how sharp your knife is. You slant your thumb at an angle and put the knife blade on the nail. If the knife slips, it's dull, but if your knife sticks it's sharp. I'm an old man now but I never forgot.
The part at 7:05 is a masterpiece, just a fresh coat of paint made the item come to life again!
Great Macanical job ❤
Thank you!
Beautiful work, I have a smaller version, they're called D'Estaing knives. It's an old French trapper design. Folded it's for basic camp tasks, unfolded it's for skinning hogs and cleaning hides to make leather. Great video, those snakeskin handles are fine!!!
Thanks for the info!
I too remember these knives from my merchant marine days .anymoons ago great memory completely legal in Texas no blade length limit
I have a bone handle one of these, was given it in 1974 by a friend of my farther,my blade is finished in chrome still working well but the blade matiral is not that amazing but you can get a razor edge on it but it never lasts long , great work thank you
*_I have watched many of this kind videos but honestly this one was more perfect and in detail_*
Thank you my friend 🙂
i, honored to have this same knife in my collection
Excellent workmanship. My personal preference would be for a shiny blade.
Конечно с тобой согласен чтобы хромировано было красиво ну и так очень здорово получилось
LMAO seeing your vice doing the same wiggle dance as mine.
Awesome restoration video, keep up
Thanks 😂
This is not just a restoration but a RESTOMOD. And now becoming a trend
I just do what I want 🙂
My brother gave me a knife almost identical to this one. My blade has several rectangular slots cut through the blade near the top edge and has the words “Stainless” and “Pakistan” and the number “6” on one side near the hinge. There isn’t anything on the other side. It came with a thin leather sheath and has a deer stamped on it. You did a great job on your knife. Darlington. South Carolina
totally amazing ...great job
Thank you!
I really appreciate the workmanship, and now that i read the comments and know what this is for, i think i made a mistake. Im fairly certain i dumped a box of old knives my father had collected that included one of these, identical except the rust and inoperability at a scrap yard 2 years ago in Florida. I wonder if maybe that very same one ended up in your hands and got restored
We’re under a tornado watch with lightning and thunder over our heads; keep going I’m enjoying your work
Stay safe brother!
What a gorgeous blade!! Great work!!!
Thank you!
I had a siilar knife that was made in Toledo and used as bayonets in the military, its a beautiful knife
Not going to lie, I am not a big fan of the snakeskin details but other than that the knife looks absolutely beautiful!!
I have that same knife and now I know how to fix it. Thank you! I'm missing the lever and where it's pinned to the locking spring is broken but I think I can repair it. Again, Thanks.
Very cool, i enjoyed this a lot.
@@luzgarcia2482 thanks!
Holy crap. I used to have this knife when I was like 14..
Found it at a flea market..
It was rusted and broke..
The lock didn't work. No open. Nothing..
I ended up getting it made into a full tang knife..
I wondered how it worked and what it would of looked like functional.
Awesome video =)
Well done Sir yet again you and your talent of restoration makes me smile .
Thank you Sir
First love a good thunderstorm, lighting and rain on a tin roof.
Second, that was one lovely snakeskin you were gifted. I still have one of snake-skins I tanned, the bastard that was inside our quarters and trying to get into our budgie's cage. The cook showed my how he did sea-snake skins.
Nice job on the knife too, lol. The scales on scales were perfect.
Crocodile Dundee would be proud of this beautiful knife you have.
Very cool, I'm still not a fan of the stone wash look yet but maybe it will grow on me. Everything else looks incredible
4:00 The rust brownie looks almost ready to eat
Great job. I think you did better then the original maker of this knife. Congratulations 🎉
Love a good thunderstorm. As long as I don’t have to go out & I’m not afraid my home will get damaged.
Thanks for the production value with snake theme made it fun!
Brings back memory of being in the Lab in my school days..
Amazing restore of knife..thanks for sharing
WWll pilot survival knife very collectable great job sir
love being outside during a thunderstorm love the smell and the static in the air, makes me feel insignificant when I witness the raw power of nature. oh and really nice restoration, your pet snake is also awesome
storms would be great if they didnt always make my power go out, to me that is all they signify; no power, internet or ac and then the long frustrating wait for it to come back on.
One hell of an amazing restoration on this old knife. I would enjoy having a knife like this in my collection
Does it come with the snake?
beautiful…. great job..🪛⛏️🔧🔩⚔️🔨⛓️🛠️👍
Thanks!
I actually have one of these in my basement. It’s in significantly better condition, and just needs a few parts.
Nice!
I can't imagine structurally this would last. I think about the abuse i put mine through. The resto is top notch i just think the overall design has flaws with a weak folding point
I agree, in my opinion a Bowie knife should never be designed to fold. They’re designed to chop and be strong, the less weak points the better.
I kept thinking similar. I just don't like the knife. It folds, yet doesn't cover the blade.
@@DrRestoration the buck 110 has a bowie style clip point and the lock back is pretty darn strong. You can't baton with it but it's a great little folding bowie that countless hunters have processed deer with. Just saying...
@@andythebreadbaker9925 awesome!
@@andythebreadbaker9925 processed a dear once with a folder. NEVER AGAIN! Fur, shreds of skin and blood gets into the mechanism and it's very hard to clean. Hell, months after that friggin bloodclots were still falling out of the knife, and it was stinking like crazy🤮
On the other note, awesome restoration🙂
That is absolutely beautiful.
Beautiful job on the restoration my friend, keep it up. 🎉
Thanks!
That was a really awesome video. Really fun and insightful.
Thank you 🙂
Crocodile Dundee would be pleased to see that knife
That cleaned up a lot better than I'd thought.
I mean yeah, the knife was probably in pretty decent condition before he artifically rusted it and burned the wood handle so he could restore it for this video.
THOR is the coolest GOD. And what a unique knife with the design. I am sure you do a great resteration. I better watch the rest of your video. And Hope you have a fantastic Easter. And if you do not celebrate. You can at least LOVE some chocolate on Sunday
Happy Easter!
Another great restoration.
Thanks again!
The knife is badass. Never seen one like that. Great job brother
Thanks Matt

I was just thinking those punches look like cheap sh!t and then you folded one 😂
Great work, skills and well edited video👍👍
Beautiful job on the snake skin scales, should have restored the original scales back on the knife.
this knife is the same kind o j simkins was suppose to use in them murders i ve got one that size and a small one pretty neet nice job
Przepiękny jest ten zrobiony i odrestałrowany ten stary zabytkowy nuż pozdrawiam twórcę tego filmiku serdecznie 👍👍👍👍👍
Amazing work my friend, absolutely beautiful.
Thank you David 😃
MUY BUEN TRABAJO. QUEDO JOYA ¡¡¡
Nice on the restoration but I would have polished the blade. And it also seams like with the design you would continuously be cutting yourself with it.
Fair enough!
The camera work actually took my breath away! Good job.
To be honest: I am ABSOLUTELY NOT convinced by the snake skin! These snakes are a collection of mostly protected kinds!
Anyway: The work is of course very well and accurately done - congrats! I didn't know that there are pocket knives of that size - WOW!
😉🦊
BEAUTIFUL WORK, EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT A FAN OF THE STONEWASH LOOK OF THE BLADE!!!
I often attribute my love for knives to my grandfather, "Pa". As a kid I spent hours rummaging through his collection of weird blades and old tools, and I remember him having one of these oddities. It came in a heavy, wax hardened pocket sheath with a belt loop and I can remember wondering why on earth someone would make a folding knife with half the blade left exposed. Even as a kid, I thought this was a ridiculous design, but that was probably half the reason he picked it up I imagine. Pa always had a soft spot for gimmicky items and he probably found his at a gun show or the old flea market we visited when I was little.
It's a traditional French trappers knife. The design is called D'Estaing. When closed, the small portion of exposed blade is meant for camp use, cutting up food items and small tasks, but when a larger knife is needed, just throw the latch and unfold the full blade. I bought one a few years ago. 👍🏻
@beltfed4624
Really? I'll have to do some digging on that, then. Do you know when they were in production? The only French styles I'm familiar with are the knives they traded to Native Americans here, usually for furs and other goods. They were all of simple, full tang and pinned construction. Usually, they didn't even come with a sheath.
@@brianlawson3757 I corrected the spelling, it's D'Estaing. They are still produced, mine is a modern version from eBay. They're not real cheap, but for $30 to $50 you should be able to get a nice one. They're not really strong knives, mostly just for hunting/field dressing/camp not survival. They're not too popular, but still around. My family came from swampers, French-Creole, my uncle had the first one I ever saw.
@beltfed4624
I had no idea they were still in production and had assumed they were more of a novelty item. The one my Pa had was pretty much blunted and would have taken an hour on a grinder to get an edge on it. Thanks for the info, though. I want to learn more about who made this wacky design and who actually used it.😁
U have many goods material, m. D 😇👍👍👍
Nice job with the snake skin design it looks great.
25:57 that's a very cute danger noodle you have there ^^
you need to sew around that snake skin on the sheathe.
Molto bravo! Complimenti per il restauro!
I have this exact knife at home!
Beautiful job.
Mick “Crocodile” Dundee would lv this
“Now that’s a knife!”
Beautiful work but that edge needs some serious work. A blade with that mass should make short work of that squash and not fling it across the room ... maybe try a scandi grind or convex edge the geometry is off
Impressive work. I have one.
Particolare mai visto👍🔪
Stunning out come well done
Great job. Very unusual knife! Kudos!
While I find the snakeskin handle a bit creepy, it's nonetheless beautiful. Great job Doctor.
Thank you 🙂

Thanks ✌️
Parabéns lindo trabalho.
Wow, simply awesome! Love the Python too!
Dope AF results, @DrRestoration!
Franchement pas terrible comme finition, maintenant les gouts et les couleurs!
Very nice job.!!
Thank you!
Nice knife and dorbs snek! :D Cute lil' python,
The knife is absolutely beautiful 👍👍
Yes
I have the same knife. Bought it 20 years ago for $12.00 at a flee market in LA. Dangerous, cheap Pakistan craftsmanship, doesn’t hold an edge and zero practical use. That said, I LOVE IT and display it with my WWI &WWII bayonets.
This knife looks like it was buried in the dirt for a few months.
Could be wrong but I believe Marbles still make a knife like this.
really strange pocket knife, but looks good
Yes I love thunderstorms ❤
Very beautiful restoration
Thank you 🙂
very nice, needs more sharpening though
Agree
Dude, that is pretty slick!
You showed us around in your dream world, thanks my friend, you are very aesthetic
