    Hello Whiskey Vault! Its really nice to see a channel like this and educating people about their whiskey. It has completely changed my perspective in terms of understanding and drinking them. Even I have started to collect some whiskey. Thanks a lot, good show guys..!

    I've been watching these videos out of order, just stumbled upon the Modern Rogue videos you were in (actually hadn't watched any of their videos, so this was all pure happenstance) and was surprised to discover that i had managed to watch all of them. Thinking about getting a small barrel to age some mead in to celebrate. Cheers!

    Haha! I was mentioned in a video! So this is what fame feels like! How do you guys not let it go to your heads? I'm also slightly embarrassed that that was my first comment on Reddit and I've been a member for three years.
    And yes Rex, I do doubt your mooching prowess. Because (if I'm really honest) if you were a master level mooch, you would have mooched something other than an out of fashion clothing item that boils down to being a sweater for your foot.
    Keep up the great work guys. Thanks for the videos.

    I think this has changed dramatically, my buddy just bought a bottle and it’s quite complex, sweet, smoky, honey, vanilla. It’s $99 now but I really like it. Reminds me of Johnny Walker Blue big time.

    So Highland Park have these 2 whiskeys, Fire Edition 15yr and Ice Edition 17yr. I'm going to ask since you have such a huge collection that if you happen to have these whiskeys in the vault, please do a tasting in honor of Game of Thrones! Of course if you're not into it then don't bother, but no harm in asking.
    Also cheers for the shoutout to the spreadsheet, hopefully it helps some people in terms of a resource to look through.

    Could you guys clarify something for me?
    There are Malt Whiskys and Grain Whiskys (and quite a few others, but let's stick to those two).
    Malt Whiskys are made from malted barley, which in itself is a sort of grain.
    Then why do we differentiate?
    Wouldn't it be easier to just call everything Grain Whisky and then have another subcategory called Malts/Barley, like you do with Rye, Corn, Wheat...?
    Love the show by the way :)
    All the best from Belgium.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому +2

      Yeah, there are two usual differences (with exceptions all over the world). Malt whisky is only barley. (as you said). It is also almost always done in a pot still, not a column still.
      Grain not only usually means a mix of grains (which makes bourbon and rye "grain whisky), but it is also very often made in column still. That's a pretty big difference, although there are exceptions.
      The 3rd random round is Irish "Pot still", in which they often do grain whisky in pot stills. And some bourbon distilleries that only use pot stills.

    Okay, so I've avoided asking about this because I don't want to add to your long list of requests but I have a question I'm curious to see what you guys think about this whisky:
    *Speyburn: Bradan Orach* Single-malt scotch
    Is this a whisky you have ever had before? It was one of the first whiskys I bought, it was cheaper and I thought it was very pleasant with strong honey and green apple tastes much like the one you did today - and I thought it would make a lovely entry level whisky because of how friendly it was. When I looked for it again, ALL of the whiskey shops around have a spot for it but it's all sold out, and has been for a month now and I can't find it again.
    When I started to look it up online, places like "Mastersofmalt" have a lot of 0.5 star out of 5 star reviews and people say a lot of bad things about how it tastes more like chemical cleaners and tequila than it does a whisky. This is as little discouraging as I thought I was beginning to develop my smell and tasting skills and although I found it uncomplex, I found it nice and easy to drink, especially since it's a 20ish dollar scotch. I'd just like to know your opinion on it if you've ever had it.
    Cheers!

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому

      If we can find one, I'll definitely try it! and remember, on most websites, the people who give reviews are the snobbiest of the snobs. Doesn't necessarily mean you will agree.

    • @Gateau
      @Gateau 7 років тому

      I wish you luck! I can't even find bottle for myself or else I'd send you some. Although I guess I could bottle up a small dram of it and send it your way but it sounds incredibly similar to the one you drank in this video, except maybe way cheaper. And I'm glad I found you guys before I found them, but multiple people are saying the same strange things about it that I just don't get.. maybe they're not even snobs and they just buy things like that to get drunk cheap

    Hi guys, absolutely love the show, find myself laughing for the entirety of each episode. I was just wondering if you could give me a recommendation. I really enjoy lagavulin 16 and talisker 10, but I wanted to try another whisky that was a bit less smokey and for about the same price at my local liquor store there's glenlivet 15, dalmore 12 and glenfiddich 15, all looked interesting to me and I wondered which you would recommend for a novice who likes Islay. Many thanks!
    Cole

    • @UnboundOdysseus
      @UnboundOdysseus 7 років тому +1

      Cole Anderson I don't think Dalmore, Glenlivet or Glenfiddich have much smoke. Caol Ila is smoky, but not as much as Lagavulin. Springbank has some smoke and peat and is just damned good. If you can find Benromach 10, buy it. Just a bit of smoke, and a ridiculously good whisky at an unbelievable price.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому +1

      Unbound Odysseus is right. If you're looking for more punchy whisky, only the glenlivet is a bit of edge. All three of those are great whiskies, but I'd head for Oban, Highland Park or Arran next.

    DANIEL! REX! I was wondering if you guys wouldn't mind seeing if you could get your hands on some Willett Family Estate Single Barrel Rye, or some Glen Scotia Double Cask Single Malt? The Glen because since finding you two gents online, taking your advice and tasting notes into consideration, I haven't tried a whiskey or whisky that I didn't like. The Willett, I have just been wondering about. I can't seem to find it in the Austin area at Total Wine, Specs, Twins, or any other smaller corner stores or anything. Thanks guys, keep up the videos!

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому +1

      Willet seems to be harder and harder to get. But could just be a distribution problem. I know I love the bourbon, but I've only tried the rye once. I think it's in the vault now, but I remember it being great! Glen Scotia I have, but only the 15 and the Victoriana. I'll see if we can find the other!

      Thanks! If not it's no problem. Really enjoy your guys' videos, and am actively referring you guys to all my whisk(e)y loving friends to try to get you guys the subscribers you deserve.
      Also, one more question, I'm trying to move around Scotland through their whisky, and I was wondering if you could recommend an Islay. I saw your video on Talisker and it sounds great but this will be my first peated scotch and I really want to pick the right one. I was also looking at Caol Ila. Thoughts?
      Sorry this is so long, I probably sound like a huge nerd but Since the marine corps, I can't get enough whiskey and have been looking for awhile for guys like you two to make learning about whisk(e)y fun and informative.
      Thanks in advance for any advice you might have, and thanks for the content. Again, sorry for the damn novel.
      Later Daniel. Later Rex.

    Some Lagavulin was spilt on the warehouse floor, as they were closing up for the night. And out of his hole, a wee brown mouse, crept into the pale moon light. He lapped up the whiskey from the warehouse floor, and there on his haunches he sat, and all night long you could hear the mouse roar, "BRING ON THE FUCKING CAT!!"
    Saw of video of Nick Offerman telling this and it stuck with me. It's a Guinness joke but I changed it to Lag. You could really insert any brand there tho.

    I know I joke around a lot but I have a serious question. When doing reviews, do you factor in when a bottle was opened? I've seen you guys open a bottle and taste it, but I find a whisky's character changes after the bottle has been opened for 2-4 weeks (if it lasts that long). What is the ideal "breathing time" (bottle breathing time, that is) to get accurate tasting notes?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 років тому +1

      I think it's all over the map. And unless you're opening and closing it a lot, it doesn't change as much as you would think. Or, unless it's half empty. ;-)

    Hey there gentlemen! do you have Dalwhinnie 15 on your list? that was the first whiskey i owned after the mooching days. it was a birthday present from my girlfriend, who bought it after being recommended by the liquor store owner. that's the one that started it all for me. Cheers!

    So, I definitely understand the on/off camera stuff. I (like many others here) have marathoned through these videos and as a result, feel like I've gotten to know you guys on some level, which is probably weird for you given that we've never met. So I worry about whether or not I'm "in" on the jokes.
    Also, Daniel! This reminds me that I revised my whiskey tasting sheet a bit, and should send you the update. If you had any suggestions or edits, but didn't want to bother with making the changes yourself, I'd be happy to do it on my end.

    Poor Rex... the significantly greater calories from his new whisky mooching hobby dooms him. We should start measuring the circumference of his belly now, so in the future we can plot the growth. Eventually he'll have to watch out how he steers that thing around the room... don't want to wipe out a row of whisky bottles off a shelf...
    How does a mooch go on a diet? Nope, doesn't happen. That requires will power, discipline. Ain gonna do dat!
