Just opened a bottle of Hatozaki Small Batch last night. Very hot - much livelier than my experience with Suntory whiskys had me anticipating for another Japanese whisky. Unfortunately I can't find any confirmation that Hatozaki is actually distilled in Japan - it may be a label slapped on a blend of whiskys from other continents. Provenance aside, you can tell it's a high-quality whisky. I'm thinking about picking up a bottle of Mars Iwai Tradition to see how it compares. Nice video! I found you from searching around for reviews of the Hatozaki Small Batch!
Thanks for watching. Hatozaki is made in Japan in the Kaikyo distillery near Akashi. The company has been brewing since 1917 so whisky distilling would be a logical next step due to the popularity of Japanese whisky. I think it's good to try whisky that doesn't come from the two big Japanese whisky brands but there is a risk that the whisky originated in Scotland!
Whisky Shared after I watched your video, I continued digging around and found this interview: www.nomunication.jp/2019/07/25/interview-kimio-yonezawa-owner-toji-akashi-sake-brewery-kaikyo-distillery/ Seems like it has at least North American and Scotch whiskies, potentially with some Japanese whisky in the mix. The responses in the interview aren’t too definitive. Either way, tasty whisky, and I completely agree that it’s good to step out of the Nikka and Suntory families. In my quest to find more plentiful and affordable alternatives to Hibiki, some have recommended Glenfiddich, so I may grab a bottle of the 12 soon. If you have any thoughts, I’d be very interested! Great channel! I subscribed last night.
I found the same mention elsewhere after you posted this. The Glenfiddich 12 is a bit simple to be honest. Depending on your budget, look out for something like Tobermory 10 or 12. However, staying with the Japanese theme, Nikka Whisky from the barrel is impressive if you've not tried it.
