      @@kilimanjarno I think for a lot of people, we like to root for him because he is an "underdog." Fabi is, in a way, rather unfortunate in that he is competing in the era of Magnus Carlsen. Otherwise, he probably would have been a formidable world champion in his own right.

    Instead of the pretty 88 g7, white also had the more pedestrian line to win of 88 a7 Nd5 89 a8=Q Nc7+ 90 Kb6 Nxa8+ Kb7 trapping the knight and the 2 pawns against king wins. This is a winning variant of the line commented upon with g7 thrown in, which only draws.

    This brings up the discussion of selfgoal in soccer. In fact the reason for selfgoal is pressure. So it is NOT selfgoal. The pressure is relentless on Ray. Fabi deliberately puts him in a timedisadvantage. This is worth remembering in your own games. Play on the opponents half of the board. No threat to your own "goalie".

    every-time you point out a computer evaluation its important to keep in mind that evaluation is from a 3500 rated computer. Sometimes the practical odds of winning are way different.

      As GothamChess puts it, the computer says this is ok but don't listen to the computer it's stupid. In other words, the computer finds moves that work only because the computer will continue to play like a 3500 rated player, something a human could never replicate.

    I wish! At 18:48 I wish Fabi would have 'fallen' for the trap. 1. A7 - ND5; 2. A8Q - NC7 check; 3. KC6 - NxA8; 4. KB7 and ... your move baby. This is a bit more than a joke in that I find it unproductive to not resign in futile positions. First, it tells the world that you cannot accept reality. Second, it is mildly insulting to your opponent. Third - and this actually happened - you draw attention to your loss. This happened when Fabi promoted to a Bishop. Fabulous!
