  • My kid's cartoons always feature a bear. It can be a kind bear taking care of a naughty little girl who's all alone in the woods (Masha & the Bear), or it can be Grizzy - a giant and super strong bear battling little lemmings...
These cartoons give my kid the wrong understanding of what a bear actually is.
Before we had cartoons, we had oral traditions passed down from generation to generation. These stories taught humans how to hunt bears to protect the tribes and to save other animals from being slaughtered.
I grew up with cartoons and Winnie the Pooh, so the idea of killing bears seemed brutal, unnecessary and cruel. I looked at it from a perspective of a person who only knew what it was like to live in a city.
There wasn't a single day when I was scared I might run into a bear on my street. But this is not how we lived throughout most of our human existence.
I found this interview so insightful because it challenged so many things I take for granted.
Ethical hunting is very important. It's also dangerous and has superstitions attached to it. Just like sailors would never whistle at sea, hunters will not do these ten taboos when hunting for bears.
